Another police shooting in Los Angeles

This involves a double amputee branding a knife . He apparently stabbed someone earlier .

by Anonymousreply 63February 8, 2023 6:33 AM

Was he a father or grandfather? A veteran, perhaps?

by Anonymousreply 1February 1, 2023 9:53 AM

He was running away on stumps.

On stumps.

by Anonymousreply 2February 1, 2023 9:56 AM

I guess they couldn't shoot for his legs. I suppose they felt he was also a public danger so they couldn't let him hobble down the street waving a knife. Still it seems like cops kill people because the cops are too lazy and stupid to figure out a non lethal technique to stop a perp.

by Anonymousreply 3February 1, 2023 10:00 AM

Why do we let cops use murder as a policing tool?

by Anonymousreply 4February 1, 2023 10:06 AM

R4 we TRAIN them to be like this, it isn’t just negligence.

Maybe he called the cops "a bunch of pansies" and threatened to bite their legs off

by Anonymousreply 6February 1, 2023 11:01 AM

Look!

The flying knife!

Not quite like the flying nun, but close enough!

by Anonymousreply 7February 1, 2023 11:10 AM

This is hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 8February 1, 2023 11:17 AM

They probably have a competition with points system and get extra for taking out an amputee. They'll be looking for a killer miget next.

by Anonymousreply 9February 1, 2023 11:21 AM

*midget

by Anonymousreply 10February 1, 2023 11:45 AM

It is a profoundly sad commentary on the state of law enforcement that two able-bodied, uninjured police officers could not subdue a hobbling double-amputee with a knife without killing him. That is even before you presume they wanted to kill him.

by Anonymousreply 11February 1, 2023 11:54 AM

I guess they must have thought he as a trained knife-throwing circus performer. Otherwise how do you see an amputee wielding a knife as in imminent threat? You can practically drop a net on him cartoon style.

by Anonymousreply 12February 1, 2023 12:16 PM

R12 God forbid they use a net. The Twitterati would accuse the cops of denying this man’s human dignity by treating him like a common animal by using a net.

by Anonymousreply 13February 1, 2023 12:33 PM

R5 For reasons that are too complicated to explain, I found myself at one of the trainings put on by Lt. Col. David Grossman. It was terrifying. Every person there, with the exception of me and another guy were cops, sheriffs, LEOs. I should also note that I'm a lawyer and I used to defend cops at one very short interval in my life, in a large very, very bad SoCal city, as a city attorney. I was also responsible for bringing civil service cases against cops who had been investigated by IA and were facing discipline. That job was not why I was there. My kind of business was tangentially in the "terrorism" field of vision after 9/11, and that's why I was there.

The "seminar" started with a video of the mass killing event in Beslan decades ago. He opined that the terrorists have determined that the best way to terrorize a population is to attack its kids. He went into great, gory detail over the ways that cops can die. And he advocated for heavy firearms drilling and military tactics in policing. He believes that every LEO should be prepared to use their firearm at all times. He is very, very convincing.

From my experience, the average LEO has little education, gets into the field because their options are somewhat limited and they like authority. The personality testing and psychological assessments prior to hire (at least here in CA) are biased toward the police mentality, which is militaristic. They are then given authority, weapons and told they are heroes. Also, they are lazy and out of shape. And vengeful.

Stumps, though. Wow.

by Anonymousreply 14February 1, 2023 12:47 PM

You can run on stumps?!

by Anonymousreply 15February 1, 2023 12:53 PM

They demanded his surrender but he cried out “It’s just a flesh wound” and persisted, so they smote him.

by Anonymousreply 17February 1, 2023 1:12 PM

Will there be riots is the question of the hour? What race were the cops will answer that question

by Anonymousreply 18February 1, 2023 2:38 PM

One cop is Hispanic, the other black. We may be safe, although the people are pretty infuriated right now .

by Anonymousreply 19February 1, 2023 2:49 PM

Ableist thinking!

A man marauding on his stumps is equally threatening as any full-legged maniac brandishing a knife.

Mike Sington, your bias is showing. Do better.

by Anonymousreply 20February 1, 2023 2:53 PM

Between the woman that stole 11,000 cases of chicken wings and this poor man running away from the cops on his stumps, all the while waving a knife…I want to say journalists are taking the piss but this is life in America now.

by Anonymousreply 21February 1, 2023 2:56 PM

Bump It’s trending now ugh

by Anonymousreply 22February 1, 2023 3:18 PM

I guess it's good to know that West Coast LEOs believe in equality in this way, at least -- they'll blast your ass to bits even if you are a smidge more mobile than a potato.

by Anonymousreply 23February 1, 2023 3:23 PM

"Don't worry, he won't get far on stumps!"

We could have lived with that. Now taxpayer funds will be used to settle with the family because a pair of imbeciles, perhaps malevolent imbeciles can't do their jobs.

by Anonymousreply 27February 1, 2023 6:03 PM

[quote] a double amputee man who tried to run away from them on the stumps of his legs.

Sad. If the typical LEO fits that psychological profile -- and I believe they do -- how do we get regular sane, conscientious people without psychological damage to take the job?

by Anonymousreply 32February 1, 2023 7:12 PM

My fiddle is all set to play.

by Anonymousreply 33February 1, 2023 9:25 PM

R29 Believe me, this was a vigorous discussion in the city attorney's office. The culture is just rotten. You can try and bring in people with higher educational attainment, which might help somewhat, but I found that even command (who usually had college degrees and some kind of paper university MBA) were inculcated in the culture and convinced of their own heroism.

Cities and counties struggle economically with the burdens of policing and are being sapped of their economic viability by police pensions and settlements. Attracting good people takes money, time, training and some means of retention short of "nobody else will hire you." So, the cities that really need good policing are the ones that are least likely to have the resources to get the good people. Their LEOs abuse the pension system and the worker's comp system, money is drained away at a faster rate and the ability to pay dwindles. Then, only the worst cops are hired. It's a vicious cycle and one that I do not see ending without a material re-set in how we view policing. De-escalation tactics work, if they are used, but they are rarely used. Why is that? Because the LEOs are afraid. They lack confidence in their street presence, so they think they have to bully people to get them to comply. If the slightest thing happens that freaks them out, they wipe out everything in range. They are just big chickens. The worst LEOs are the ones that are afraid but pretend to be macho.

I wonder what happened in Texas with the police that resulted in amputation of lower legs 🦵? Sounds like this guy is a violent nut job

by Anonymousreply 35February 1, 2023 10:06 PM

Side note there was a junkie in a wheel chair who lived on my block in NYC. His name was John. He’d been there so long I just saw him as my neighbor. I used to buy him beer and food on my way back home wasted from some club. He was missing a foot. Little bit later his leg up to his knee was gone. Then he lost the other foot. Over the course of three years he lost both of his legs up to his hips. One late night I was stumbling around a corner and he was just kinda propped up on his blanket no higher than fire hydrant shooting up. I almost kicked him, he so scared the shit out of me.

by Anonymousreply 36February 1, 2023 11:10 PM

This guy is not sympathetic. That’s saying something!!!

by Anonymousreply 37February 1, 2023 11:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 40February 1, 2023 11:36 PM

Thank you, R34, but the one question you didn't address is this:

Why don't they fire the bad cops?

by Anonymousreply 41February 1, 2023 11:39 PM

Why is this not top trending?

by Anonymousreply 42February 2, 2023 12:19 AM

it's standard procedure to shoot to kill rather than maim for public safety. . . if this fellow turned out to be a terrorist strapped with a explosive device and he was just maimed the public would also be screaming why they didn't shoot to kill. go figure.

and retaining weapons is considered suicide by cop.

amputee or killer dwarves, they're still dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 43February 2, 2023 12:22 AM

for the people saying de-escalation tactics work... address that to teachers that are trained it in vs how effective it is with violent students. Or perhaps mental health and social workers with violent addicts and nutcases.

The greatest country in the world, the mouth breaking hillbilly said.

by Anonymousreply 52February 3, 2023 12:38 PM

Hillbillies love shooting things and don't mind the risk of getting blown away everytime they leave their shack, so long as they have the opportunity to fire a few shots at folks they don't like, first. The fact that non-hillbillies are terrorized by the thought of it all brings joy to their sad, aimless lives.

R53, in Los Angeles? Lol Non white cops

by Anonymousreply 55February 3, 2023 11:55 PM

I am not defending cops but citizens shouldn't be allowed to carry guns. Gun manufacturing is big business. Gun ownership is out of control, and every violent asshole has them.

by Anonymousreply 56February 4, 2023 6:28 PM

Apparently most of the non-amputee urbanites in my city are having "mental health crises," too.

Constantly.

by Anonymousreply 57February 7, 2023 6:50 PM

[quote] He was running away on stumps. On stumps.

That man leaped out of his chair quickly and ran toward a stranger on the street on those stumps - quickly - and stabbed him in the back almost killing him. Don't act like this man was not a danger and was immobile.

No cop is going to get near a man with a butcher knife. There's a 20 foot rule. The taser didn't work on him. He was on a busy sidewalk in a busy part of town and anyone could have come upon the scene and within reach so he could also stab them. You know, like a child.

by Anonymousreply 58February 7, 2023 7:09 PM

A taser would've sufficed just fine. He is literally footless and would've fallen/been incapacitated immediately because of balance issues.

Also, I'm going to hell with gasoline drawls on after what I did watching him run on his stumps. Directly to hell.

by Anonymousreply 59February 7, 2023 7:52 PM

This could have ended with a better outcome but we are going to get to a point where we have no police. At a point, they are going to think why bother as based on any encounter, it could lead to arrest and possible prison time. Even good cops, who are the majority will leave....and, we are going to be royally fucked.

Something needs to be done in approaching differently, but we need to remember that the majority of cops are good and while these are extreme cases, the majority are handled well.

Media should also highlight some of the vast majority that are good too.

by Anonymousreply 60February 7, 2023 8:47 PM

[quote] A taser would've sufficed just fine. He is literally footless and would've fallen/been incapacitated immediately because of balance issues.

Uh, except it didn’t.

Did you not read the story? The taser was ineffective.

I love Monday morning quarterbacks who know so much from the safety of their homes, not on the streets fighting these lunatics.

Trust me, this guy's family is relieved he's dead. They're ecstatic thinking they can sue and make a fortune.
