Crime In Chicago Is Off The Charts

What could/should be done?

Crime rates in the city have skyrocketed by 61% in the first three weeks of 2023, compared to the previous year, according to data from Chicago police. Authorities received 4,844 crime reports, up from 3,013 in the same period last year.

Two people were killed and 13 others, including a 3-year-old boy, were wounded this weekend in shootings across the city, ABC7 reported. Last weekend, seven people were killed and at least 23 others were wounded in a similar manner.

Meanwhile, 13 robberies were carried out over two hours on the city’s South and West sides Saturday night into early Sunday, NBC Chicago reported. In each incident, one or more people riding in a vehicle drove up to the victims.

Among the businesses that have closed their doors or announced their departures were Banana Republic, Old Navy, Timberland, Uniqlo, Gap and Macy’s, NBC Chicago reported.

The vacancy rate in the not-so-“Magnificent Mile” has reached about 30%, according to Crain’s. Just six years ago, it was reportedly under 5%.

“Believe it or not, if someone shoplifting up to $1,000, there are no consequences. So imagine, Steve, how long can you stay in business if somebody is stealing $1,000 from you every single day?” he said.

“In a month, that’s $30,000 in a year, that’s $3 million. You’re not going to be able to stay in business,” Kelly added.

I wonder what that means.

Maybe it's something clever.

by Anonymousreply 5February 1, 2023 7:50 AM

R5, you did that wrong. Stop displaying your retardation already.

by Anonymousreply 6February 1, 2023 9:10 AM

Are the murders all related to gangs and drugs?

by Anonymousreply 7February 1, 2023 9:19 AM

yassss hunty 💃🏾

by Anonymousreply 8February 1, 2023 9:27 AM

The schools need more workshops on racial equity. That will change everything.

by Anonymousreply 9February 1, 2023 9:52 AM

All those kidz-4-ca$h that ghetto women had are coming of age. They run the streets feral, but if one is killed she'll call Ben Crump and say, "He were steel playin' wif Legos!".

by Anonymousreply 10February 1, 2023 9:57 AM

She's a clown. She has 0 idea on this whole "messaging" thing and she has no idea how to manage relationships. Just ask the teachers and the police.

by Anonymousreply 11February 1, 2023 12:56 PM

R11- I wonder if she's best friends with that OTHER clown 🤡 Mayor Adams of NYC?

by Anonymousreply 12February 1, 2023 1:28 PM

When is crime in Chicago not off the charts OP. You a newly arrived immigrant?

by Anonymousreply 13February 1, 2023 1:36 PM

Can't imagine being a Police Officer there. Must be like war on the front lines every day, forever.

by Anonymousreply 14February 2, 2023 12:13 AM

Head for a safer city! Like Atlanta or Vegas! Oh wait

Baltimore, Detroit and St Louis have the highest murder rate per capital with Memphis coming up strong at #4. NYC is still relatively low on the list for homicides. Much better than Chicago or Los Angeles.

by Anonymousreply 16February 2, 2023 1:24 AM

Put up a roadblock and search every vehicle for illegal weapons transported across the Indiana border.

by Anonymousreply 17February 2, 2023 1:27 AM

Straight up, I live in Chicagoland, and while it is true that there are some increases, nationally crime rates are actually excellent. Chicago has *always* had violence in certain neighborhoods (like Austin, Humbolt Park, Rogers Park, nearby towns like Cicero, Maywood, Melrose Park, East Garfield Park) plus a lot of the South Side and the west side was like a third world country 25 years ago, I can’t imagine it’s any better.

But sometimes there are new neighborhoods that become violent as a place becomes more poor, on PBS there is an amazing series about the history of each Chicago neighborhood with one episode for each location, host was a balding white-guy nerd, but it was fascinating to learn about who lived there before the other group and how it was always about these places frequently turning into ghetto wastelands because it became very poor. The neighborhoods that have always had violence just have more now — I don’t deny though that thieves, rapists, car jackets, they are coming out of their bad neighborhoods and going to take from the “nice” neighborhoods. Gangs/poverty go hand-in-hand. Why do people join gangs? For love. For family. For protection. To make money.

Right now the reason there are *more* shootings in poorer Chicago neighborhoods is because of the cartels. The Cartels used to only work with specific mostly Latin gangs. But in the last twenty years, the Cartels have branched out and deal with many different gangs, they aren’t loyal to just one anymore. So that means gang wars to get their business, you’ve got to take out your competition. So the rate of increase is a direct outcome of cartel members on Chicago streets, and gang warning to win their contract.

Our Mayor is doing the best she can in a tough environment. Most Chicagoans *love* Lori Lightfoot, we were all proud to have elected LL as our first black lesbian mayor. Yes, we’re the Second City, but we still have some pride. Now the mayor of NYC? That dude is a fucking clown, he’s a showboat. Lori doesn’t need the lights and cameras and constant attention.

Last point — anyone who opens a thread on a news topic using the fucking NY Post is a fucking troll, all the way. What bitch/OP, you don’t know that that paper is Rethug owned, and that they are on a mission to make every single Democratic stronghold look like a war zone to prove their [false] argument that blue states are shit holes? Look at what they’re doing to California, specifically the Bay Area. Yes, SF has a serious homelessness problem, but they’re trying to fix it. Yes, Chicago has an increase in violence problem, but they’re trying to fix it. And CA is so rich their economy would be sixth in the world’s wealthiest nations!!! So they have their shit together big time, and that is also why they get more homeless, the homeless know that CA tries to treat them with dignity and offer all kinds of support and services for things like addiction, housing, food, medical care like COVID shots, finding work, etc.

OP, you’re right-wing, you’ve been called out. Are you even gay? Are you even a man? I would bet my ass cheeks that you are neither, and that you’re older Gen Z or youngest Millennial. You’re white, possibly no degree because you don’t believe in college edumacation.

And one last insult before I leave. Where do you get your news from child?!?!? Do you even know the difference between entertainment and journalism? How do you stay informed? As your fellow American, I’m here to tell you that you are the problem. If you actually love your country and love learning, then use respected journalism from the finest sources out there — and I read both sides, imagine doing that too! It’s time to put your big boy pants on and understand why it is your fault ghat our country is getting dumber by the hour, fuck it, by the minute!!!!

Just let this thread die or OP won’t learn his lesson.

by Anonymousreply 18February 2, 2023 2:40 AM

OP, you sly puss.

by Anonymousreply 19February 2, 2023 2:45 AM

ONLY THE NYT IS ACCEPTABLE!!!!! That’s where I get my both sides. You should, too, sad white peasants lacking sufficient formal education.

R20, only a dumb fuck would make that charge. You automatically assume I’m some Ivy League elitist, but really I’m just an ordinary person who demands that my fellow countrymen hold SOME understanding of why great journalism is in peril, and how dependent our democracy is on journalism in order to thrive.

by Anonymousreply 22February 2, 2023 3:30 AM

Chicago cops are corrupt AF. R14 On a very high level, even the beat cops.

by Anonymousreply 23February 2, 2023 3:46 AM

Im born and raised in Chicago, In Albany Park. Left in the late 90s. I don't know anyone who would agree with r18. Lightfoot is a disaster. Hispanic gangs are now terrorizing formerly safe neighborhoods. Turning nice Italian/Irish Catholic neighborhoods into violent dumps. I saw it for myself. Nobody cares Lightfoot is black/gay/whatever either. They just want her to get on with the job!

by Anonymousreply 25February 2, 2023 3:52 AM

Lived there for 12 years. So glad I got out. A depressing, crime ridden, "yay we get 4 months of decent weather a year" city. Fuck that noise. Wouldn't even visit again if all expenses were paid.

by Anonymousreply 26February 2, 2023 3:53 AM

Mass shootings went up in Texas after Greg Abbott loosened gun laws, but the DL Republican Brigade won't mention that

by Anonymousreply 27February 2, 2023 3:57 AM

Golly gee, I guess we should just execute everyone who breaks the law. That's what you wanted to hear, OP?

by Anonymousreply 28February 2, 2023 4:00 AM

LOL. If Mr. Lightfoot stopped dancing every time there was crime in Chicago, he'd NEVER fucking dance again!!!

by Anonymousreply 29February 2, 2023 4:10 AM

r29, does Greg Abbott dance in his wheelchair every time someone in Texas gets shot

by Anonymousreply 30February 2, 2023 4:14 AM

Why are these black folks so enthusiastically celebrating Lunar New Year? Lori is gangster btw

by Anonymousreply 31February 2, 2023 4:28 AM

I’m votin’ Vallas. Tunney (outgoing Boystown alderman) put his support behind Vallas, too.

All of the Lakefront Lib Aldermen have quit/retired under Lori Lighfoot. Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Uptown. They’re tired of taking the heat from residents due to the shitshow that is city hall.

But even if Vallas is Mayor, it won’t get better. Lori just has the magical ability to get everyone from ALL sides to hate her. Chicago re elected Kim Foxx and Toni Preckwinkle. Blech.

by Anonymousreply 32February 2, 2023 4:34 AM

Have no fear,

Kim is here !
