I thought we didn't want actresses to be shallow social media types? Is this just because she's very acclaimed? I don't see the cunt you're all making her out to be when I watch her interviews, she just seems self assured and no-cutesy pie bullshit.
Why does everyone hate Cate Blanchett on here now for being "pretentious"?
by Anonymous | reply 229 | February 16, 2023 1:49 AM |
I used to love Cate and still consider her the best actress below 60 out there but that Critic's Choice speech....dear lord. It was patronizing (to other women) bursting with privilege and hypocritical. And I say it as a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 30, 2023 5:11 PM |
I think a lot of the hatred for Blanchett here is just trying to make the Best Actress race more of a competition than it already is. It's a lot of hyperventilating over things she said in speeches that doesn't matter at all.
I don't think it comes from passionate Michelle Yeoh fans, though, because there isn't a lot of love for Everything Everywhere All at Once on this site compared to elsewhere online. Maybe it's from Meryl fans who don't like that another actress is going to join her as a three-time Oscar winner, and at an age young enough that she has a good chance of surpassing her.

How was her speech "bursting with privilege and hypocritical" R1?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 30, 2023 5:49 PM |
I didn’t find it as hypocritical or bursting with privilege either. It reminds me of when people went batshit over Jane Campion last year. It seems that the public cannot handle a woman in the arts who isn’t overly soppy and “endearing.”

OP, she talks about the patriarchy so Republicans DLers think she's "woke"

by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 30, 2023 5:52 PM |
I agree she's the best female film actress under 65 right now.
Most of the hatred directed against her here is because she's a blonde white woman who is widely admired.

R6, if you think people here hate her because she's a blonde white woman you should read the vitriol aimed at Viola Davis. Republicans here hate black people. They hate the white people who are "woke"

R3, from the Sydney Herald about cate's speech This about sums it: Many applauded her, but others also saw the comments as uncharacteristically myopic, especially as she clutched her latest trophy while making them When film is a hit, that exposure makes people like Blanchett among the most influential humans on the planet. Not only does it lead to multimillion-dollar contracts to sell expensive face creams and perfumes, as Blanchett does; it paves the way to address governments and powerful organisations, like the United Nations, on serious issues, as Blanchett has.

R3 It's just very very easy to be all "Wouldnt it all be lovely if us women could just sit around discussing our great characters instead of competing against each other" when you have a closet full of awards (well deserved imo). Also, the idea that women would be happier not engaging in some perceived nasty patriarchal competition....because as far as I know, she mentioned this specifically about women...when maybe that's not necessarily the truth for all of us. Yes, why don't we just sit around in a circle over some herbal tea while our cycles sync up instead...that totally shatters the stereotype about the competiveness of women. And the whole line about how "All the women, down to the ones in tampon commercials, I'm sure you're all wonderfull" or whatever.....maybe some appreciate that, I just find it patronizing. Maybe some of us suck. It was just a coma inducing sugar infested tounge bath meant for my female heart to go pitter patter and it had the exact opposite effect.
Add to this that she has actively campaigned for years to win awards and it's just too much.
Now I will say, I don't disagree that who wins awards is not the be all and end all and there should celebration of all the great performances every year. I also don't think Blanchett was really intending to make a really serious political speech and some people took it more seriously than it was intended. I genuinely think Blanchett was trying to be gracious but her privilege just made her not kind of blind and not quite in touch with reality.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 30, 2023 11:27 PM |
I don't think blanchett ia too keen on her lesbian 'fanbase" she was asked about it recently amd gave a strange response of whatever that means These lezzies are wasting their time. Blanchett is not ready to be your icon.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 30, 2023 11:30 PM |
CB's recent awards speech was not so well received because it is hypocritical and didn't come off as genuine. She wanted to be woke, probanly felt guilty about these black actresses staring at her and she quickly said some BS. If Cate was genuine about sleaking on inequality she would address racism in Hollywood
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 30, 2023 11:36 PM |
Blanchett is a very talented actress. She's not particularly interesting as a person and that's fine. I don't watch awards shows or much celebrity television. She does seem quite typical for an educated actress, enough brains to grasp a script - even a complex one - and the ability to take direction combined with her innate talent for performing and she's a great success. She's not necessarily smarter or even better than other actresses but she does have a wider vocabulary and she tries very hard.
The real problem with Blanchett is that she's cold as ice and that comes across.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 30, 2023 11:41 PM |
I think people have always been cool towards her. Maybe the lesbians like her, but she is very stiff and can’t do comedy or be a romantic lead. Much like dear old Glennie.

Actresses like Cate Blanchett are one of the reasons the Academy Award are shit.
She’s almost irrelevant at the box office but she makes great movies (I guess) and she’s a critic darling.
And it drives zero people to watch the show.
You could look at the last few years of winners and the average person is like who the fuck is that?
Lol.
No one watched “Tar” but she’s going to sweep award season.
But sure let’s blame black people and wokeness for why people don’t watch the Oscars and award shows anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 31, 2023 12:04 AM |
Didn’t she say let’s stop the televised horse race for actresses? (While feverishly campaigning?).
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 31, 2023 12:04 AM |
R43 So the Oscars should be a popularity contest, not an award for best performance of the year?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 31, 2023 12:09 AM |
R37 I agree with everything you said but I think (especially today) it’s very unusual for a female celebrity to come across as cold and intellectual, so that’s why Cate inspires distaste from certain people. It actually makes me like her even though she’s such a hit or miss actress. Like Bette Davis, when she’s excellent (such as in TAR, a movie I’ve seen memed a ton on Twitter so SOMEONE must have watched it) there’s few better, but when she’s awful, it’s painful.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 31, 2023 12:10 AM |
R45, the Oscars have ALWAYS been a popularity contest and not at all an award for Best Performance of the year.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 31, 2023 12:20 AM |
R45 The Oscars has always been a popularity contest. It’s just that these actors are not popular anymore.
The Oscars are just like local elections. Politicians put their name everywhere so people recognize the name so when people go to vote, they vote for them despite not knowing who they are.
It’s the same shit at the Oscars. That’s why they campaign.
“Tar” is Oscar bait and Oscar bait doesn’t even work anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 31, 2023 12:21 AM |
R44 Yes and she called award shows a patriarchal pyramid. Cause you know, women don’t compete and everyone should get a trophy.
That’s why you have to respect the older generation of actresses. Was it Elaine Stritch who won a few years before she died and basically said fuck the other nominations, I WON!!!
Look at how Joan and Bette fought over the Oscars. Now actors are just TOO cool to win. As award shows are dying because it’s a bunch of actors with zero star power today lol.

I have a story about her. A few years back my friend who worked as a cashier at a supermarket always told me how she has a celebrity who shops at her store and she has checked out her groceries several times. She couldn't give me a name and when I asked how she knows this person is famous, said her coworkers told her. This is seaside mind you, so I chucked it off as some dlister, Top of the Pops or X factor type celeb. She always talked of how sweet this person was and how she helps her to her car with the groceries etc My friend is a middle-aged mum. She doesn't follow Hollywood. One afternoon I went to pick my her up after work, spotted her helping a thin built woman with her grocery cart. I walk up to my friend waiting to the side for her to finish helping this person. I wasn't really paying attention until i heard the voice thanking my friend, It was Cate Blanchett. She was so pale looking, looked massively disheveled. It even looked like she was wearing pajamas bottoms. I remember saying oh wow, she smiled , thanked my friend and drive off. This was over a decade ago.

Tar is not Oscar bait. If you’ve seen the movie you know it’s very far from it. It’s a well crafted movie about a complex character and it actively questioning very popular liberal notions about MeToo and “cancel culture.” Because it’s an arthouse movie for adults it’s Oscar bait?
Promising Young Woman was Oscar bait. Nomadland was Oscar bait.

[quote]When one Oxford English Dictionary just won't do.
Cate is quite right. The Oxford English Dictionary IS in 26 volumes. If you are thinking of it as only one volume you are thinking of the Shorter (though I think even that is two) or the Concise, both of which are heavily abbreviated versions. The full thing does not just tell you the meanings of the words and how to pronounce them, but their entire histories, with changing meanings and pronunciations and examples of the earliest works in which they appeared. If you were in a lot of Shakespeare and other classics (and she has been) and you had plenty of room in your house (and she does) then the OED would be useful, and not a particularly pretentious thing to own. I had professors of Eng Lit who had it in their offices.
I don't think Australia in general has any particular prejudices against her, except maybe that when she left LA she chose to move to England instead of back home. There are probably theatre luvvies (including patrons) who didn't get enough of her attention when she ran the Sydney Theatre Company and are resentful, but the big names of Australian theatre have always appeared to be pleased to work with her, and they either already have overseas recognition or have chosen not to pursue it, so it's not like they're angling for advancement.
Anyone who doubts her talent should try to see the movie Thank God He Met Lizzie (or it might show up as The Wedding Party). It is from very early in her career, and also stars Richard Roxburgh and Frances O'Connor. It proves she has always been a great actress, and also that she looked much better with her original teeth!

I hated her after reading an interview she gave to an Austin paper when she was making a film with notoriously overrated Terrence Malick. She said her father was from Texas. He died when she was 10 of heart failure. Did she reminisce fondly about poor old Dad? Nah, she bitched about how she has always hated Westerns because her father was bedridden for a couple of years and all he'd do was watch Westerns on TV and annoy her. Then the jerk went and died and she and her Ma were broke and they suffered so much. Such a bitch.
Another reason to hate her: she's so fucking pretentious and yet dumb. When she won an Oscar and Daniel Day-Lewis gave it to her, she said getting an Oscar from DDL "exacerbated the honor"!

R8 got it right. Nobody is asking for Cate to pretend to be an ally, but the patriarchy is not the problem in Hollywood, racial discrimination is. And she should at least acknoweldge this or shut the fuck up about social issues when she goes to collect her little trophies at the podium.
I'm sure a seemingly smart woman like her can see that the patriarchy is not the main issue in Hollywood. Non white actresses do not have the same opportunities as white actresses. The patriarchy did not stop unknown Andrea Risborough from being nominated.

At the the 38th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival at Arlington Theatre.
The 53-year-old was honoured at the Outstanding Performers of the Year Award tribute.
Cate opted for a Louis Vuitton number from the brand's Spring Summer 2017 collection - a high fashion frock in a asymmetric cut and glittering silver and black tones. The usual dress included one sleeve in black, and the star had her shoulder bared on the other side. She added a pair of black heather boots with a a pointed design and a towering stiletto heel.

Cate Blanchett hits back at cancel culture and says society will be 'destined to repeat' mistakes if history is airbrushed: 'It's important to have a healthy critique'
by Anonymous | reply 159 | February 14, 2023 9:52 AM |
She used Pablo Picasso as an example as she said she could 'only imagine' what happened at the time but praised him for creating Guernica, which she deemed 'one of the greatest work of art ever'.
She told Radio Times: 'You look at Picasso. You can only imagine what went on in, outside and around his studio.
'But do you look at Guernica and say that is one of the greatest works of art ever? Yes, it's a fact. I think it's important to have a healthy critique.'
Cate, whose new movie Tar has been accused of being 'anti-woman', also argued that society will be 'destined' to repeat mistakes if we airbrush history.
She said: 'If you don't read older books that are slightly offensive because of what they say in a historical context, then you will never grapple with the minds of the time [and] we are destined to repeat that stuff.'
Cate went on to say that her new movie Tar used cancel culture as a plot device to tackle 'existential' issues.
Elsewhere in the interview, Cate also addressed the double standards women face in positions of power.
She said: 'As a woman, when you don't wield your power – in the way we see men wield their power – then people think you don't know what you're doing, you don't know what you think.'
by Anonymous | reply 160 | February 14, 2023 9:58 AM |
Cate is totally right. These difficult conversations and healthy critique is required if society is to progress. We can't go ahead and cancel everything or ban books which teach about America's history of enslaving blacks and Indignenous People. However, we must be very careful and not allow narratives of the past to forge ahead. Things which which were deemed conducive to the past e.g raced based science must be cancelled. It can be studied, which is allowed but cannot be glorified.
Cate's statement is just too general. I expect nothing less from a privileged white Australian woman

by Anonymous | reply 166 | February 14, 2023 5:21 PM |
We have to look at history from all perspectives, the good and the bad . If we don't learn from things we did wrong then we are stupid. For example, pretending slavery wasn't damaging and is irrelevant to people alive now is stupid, saying people should let bygones be bygones over matters that shaped the world is stupid. There are lessons to be learned and peoples voices should be heard and opinions respected from all perspectives. That does not mean we have to agree, but we should have respect.

by Anonymous | reply 176 | February 14, 2023 9:18 PM |
I think it's a bit silly of Cate to wade into the murky waters of the cancel culture debate, because there was no need for it in her case.
Some of Lydia Tár's behaviour is so bad that no-one would disagree with her being "cancelled", therefore it wouldn't give rise to a "cancel culture" debate.
Rather silly of Cate to make herself look conservative when that is the very thing that the Academy wants to avoid after the controversy, justified or not, over the Till and Woman King black actresses (Deadwyler and Davis) not being nominated.
Perhaps DL is right and Cate just really loves the sound of her own voice. I still liked TÁR.

I skipped a lot because it's close to bed time, and this issue is a lot deeper than I thought it would be. And I don't know anything about Tar. Some quick points:
1. Women have suffered more than any other group throughout history. There, I said it.
2. We kind of do have to view pedos and Nazis and slaveowners through a historical lens. I was watching this art history dvd (BBC) I got from Dollar Tree (The Private Life of a Masterpiece, Christmas edition), and they got to the last segment. It was about a Gauguin painting where he panted his fourteen year old girlfriend as Mary, right after she had given birth. I am squeamish and turned it off, I never finished watching it. Still, it happened, and as far as I know people still like his work. (See point number 1 above)
3. Tar may be boring (as I said, I haven't even read anything about it), but I bet The Woman King and Till are pretty boring too. Till is an important story, but we kind of know all about it already. It's not something that they just pulled out of obscurity. And who gives a shit about an African woman king? Nobody does. We'd all rather watch Wakanda Forever. I mean, maybe I should learn more about The Woman King, but nobody wants to watch that. Like nobody wants to watch softball. You can't force people to be interested in boring stuff.

Most of the Cate haters on DL are probably deuxmoi frauen or morons, reading through this thread. I still think most on this site like her.

4. Ooof, just read more about The Woman King, I think I had read some of that already. That sounds like the most "problematic" movie subject in the history of the world. So not only does no one care, but if we actually look closely at it, we are horrified. Do they discuss slavery in the movie? How is it handled? Or is The Woman King character a recognized villain?
by Anonymous | reply 200 | February 15, 2023 2:29 AM |
R200, the movie tries to briefly acknowledge the issue so that it can be summarily ignored, since the movie was really only interested in doing its rousing feminist action shtick. People did bring it up, but it was usually in a Fox News racist asshole context that no one wanted to validate. That probably explains some of the reaction to the movie in terms of awards. No one wanted to attack it and be on the side of conservative assholes, but few wanted to affirm what the movie did either.
R198 is mostly right, except for one thing: Yeoh isn’t winning. She doesn’t have a role that wins Oscars, no matter how much Oscar voters love the movie itself. It will take a lot to upset Cate with the reception she’s had all season, and mentioning the patriarchy or praising Andrea Riseborough or misusing exacerbate in a sentence ten years ago isn’t going to be it.

R75 She was nick named 'Carbon Cate' by the right wing media (i.e. Murdoch papers).
The reason is because she preached to ordinary people that they need to make sacrifices to help reduce omissions, whilst she flies all over the world to attend to opening of an envelope.
Australians don't mind being told how they can help improve things for a better society but not by people who don't practice what they preach.
She can go fuck herself and when her kids burn up due to a heated up planet she and her husband can thank each other of their contribution.

Aussie Hollywood star delivers Super Bowl sledge and AFL reveal
Aussie Hollywood A-lister Cate Blanchett has once again shown you can take the woman out of Australia, but you can’t take the Australia out of the woman. Having been born in Melbourne and cut her chops on Australian stages, Blanchett shows she’s as Aussie as it comes. The 53-year-old has shunned the soccer and gridiron brands of football, calling AFL “real football” on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night.
Kimmel asked Blanchett if she watched the Super Bowl.
“To be honest, it’s a gladiatorial sport, where I came from we have a football that’s Aussie rules, footy,” Blanchett began.
“They have a similar kind of ball except they don’t have the protection.”
Kimmel asked: “They don’t even have sleeves right?”
Blanchett: “They wear shorts and tank tops. And my uncle used to play professionally for Essendon. And my cousin played in Tasmania where it’s so hardcore they played on gravel.”
Kimmel: “Is that true?”
Blanchett: “Yeah. I mean the Super Bowl, they take a few hits, but you go to Tasmania and they play real football.”
Kimmel: “On gravel, that’s not kidding around.”
Blanchett: “They lose a lot of players but … it’s why the population’s really small.”
Kimmel said he believes Americans see Australian’s like the rest of the world sees Americans “that they’ve got a screw loose and are really flirting with danger at all times”.
“They’re out there, they’ve got no helmet’s on, they’re killing each other in the same way, they’re kicking a ball, they’re totally exposed,” Kimmel said.
Blanchett: “And the hole in the Ozone layer is right over Australia so it’s really, it a very very difficult game. So that was nothing last night Patrick.”
