Two friends and I are taking the train down to New Orleans soon.
We are looking for restaurant recommendations for dinner. Not too trendy, not too expensive, just outstanding NOLA cuisine, on or off the beaten path.

Galatoire's or Napoleon House

Jewel of the South

Cochon Butcher; great sandwiches. If they have pulled pork sandwiches, get that!
Shrimp and Grits at Commander’s Palace.
Mind you I visited those restaurants several years ago so things may have changed. So much good food in NOLA, those are the two meals that stood out for me.

I just found out Uglesich's closed! I remember that place from the '90s. Neighborhood joint. Locals. Great food. Alas ...
What about Pascal Manale's? Still around?

Upperline? Bayona? NOLA?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 29, 2023 7:05 PM |
Caribbean Room at the Pontch?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 29, 2023 7:06 PM |
^ I really liked Bayona
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 29, 2023 7:06 PM |
Commander's? Brennan's?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 29, 2023 7:09 PM |
Was just there last weekend for the first time in a decade or so. I was quite taken back by how sad, rundown and neglected everything is. Urban plight everywhere you turn. Quite depressed me actually… lots of great memories there.

If you’re looking to expand your horizons, get an alligator Po Boy somewhere.

Do they have a Popeyes?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 29, 2023 7:36 PM |
Tujague's

[quote]Upperline? Bayona? NOLA?
Upperline and NOLA have both closed.
Bayona is Susan Spicer's first restaurant. Rosedale is her new one; it's good and definitely off the beaten path.
You don't think Asian when you think New Orleans, but Thanh Dinh is one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the South, and Budsi's and Thai'd Up are both outstanding Northern Vietnamese/Lao cuisine with none of the overly sweet sauces of the usual Thai American.
Parkway for po-boys and lots of local characters.
For really good cocktails and small bites, Jewel of the South and Latitude 29 (both in the Quarter).

Napoleon House is a good standby, particularly their muffaletta.
Johnny's for a classic Po Boy.
Bearcat is a fantastic brunch/breakfast spot.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 29, 2023 8:16 PM |
I love La Petite Grocery on Magazine Street. I guess it might not be a bargain. I am sorry you're poor. Parkway is a great po boy, as r13 said.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 29, 2023 8:40 PM |
You’re a bitch, r15.
Come sit by me.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 29, 2023 8:42 PM |
So a Po Boy is a filled baguette, is it?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 29, 2023 8:47 PM |
A Po Boy is a hero, or hoagie, depending on where you’re from.
It’s a large sandwich.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 29, 2023 9:00 PM |
Another vote for Tujague's. Also one of the best po boy in the quarter is at the convenience store on the corner of Dumaine and Burgundy. It’s close to where I stay, well made and good quality.

We always enjoy Domenica in the Roosevelt Hotel (you can also stop at the Sazerac Bar)
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 29, 2023 9:55 PM |
Do the drugstores still have Lemon Coke with chipped ice?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 29, 2023 10:28 PM |
You'll have a great time whatever you do, as long as you make sure you aren't murdered while you're there.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 29, 2023 10:43 PM |
True. You don’t want to spend your vacation dead.

When you die you go to Elysian Fields

I’ve always wanted to try Yakamein, a Creole/Asian beef noodle soup particular to New Orleans and a famed hangover cure. There’s a famous Yakamein lady that moves around serving it different places on different days of the week.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 30, 2023 4:31 AM |
That's Ms. Linda. Yakamein is a sort of salty soul food ramen with chuck roast, spaghetti noodles, green onions, soy sauce and half a hard-boiled egg in broth. Usually served in a styrofoam cup and not available in many restaurants.

I like a good crawfish maque choux. Can only find in New Orleans.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 30, 2023 9:41 PM |
These 2 British gays were scared shitless in NOLA and left early!

Fried oysters! So creamy, crunchy and delicious. I like Sidecar Nola Patio & Oyster Bar in the Warehouse District:
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 5, 2023 2:52 PM |
Don't forget WIllie Mae's Scotch House, Dooky Chase's, or Jacques-Imo's for fried chicken (or McHardy's for takeout)
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 5, 2023 3:03 PM |
We went to Clancy's for dinner and BearCat CBD for lunch.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 5, 2023 3:37 PM |
Rent bikes from Bicycle Michael's on Frenchman, grab a muffletta and beers from Central Grocery on Decator, and pedal out to City Park and hang out under the oaks. Cool museum, sculpture park and botanical garden.
Eat/drink at Bacchanal, Buffa's (good music too). Country Club (gay restaurant with a pool!). The tiny carousel bar in the Monteleone Hotel is charming, Kinda crowded and expensive, but worth a visit.
I second everything r32 said.
I'm not a huge fan of Tujague's as many are here, but it is an old standby, and if you want to sample old school New Orleans. I'm sure I'll think of more later.
Nola can be dangerous, but it always was. Just keep your eyes open and don't get stupid. If you get drunk, take a can home. I use United.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 5, 2023 3:37 PM |
Dooky Chase. It’d be a bargain even if the food wasn’t so good. It is soooooo good.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 5, 2023 4:27 PM |
I killed the bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 5, 2023 4:29 PM |
Take a street-car named Desire, and transfer to one called Cemeteries, and ride six blocks and get off at—Elysian Fields!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 6, 2023 2:08 AM |
I saw a roach on the table in Central Grocery, and yet we ate.
