A group of friends made it their life-long mission to go to the Super Bowl and meet NFL superstar Tom Brady....In what universe do the producers of this moronic shit think we live in? It's obvious the film can only be marketed to middle American football lovin' NASCAR-loving, bloated Americans. Oh, dig the interracial casting in these woke days of Hollywood sensitivity! I guess Ruby Dee wasn't available, and if she were, she'd probably be turning over in her grave. And who would think of putting Hanoi Jane Fonda as a lead in a film only playing for white folk. It's a joke! She is fucking DESPISED by that crowd. .......Did anyone see the poster??? In what universe could these leads appear as they really are? Hags with dropping faces, not this fantasy of photoshopped fakery? NONE!!!!! Jesus H. Christ...........Bet it was financed by the cosmetics industry with name-brand droppings all over the script to show the old hags and bags of the USA, you can look like this! Just try our product.
I got shot down for creating a thread about this movie several days ago.

This is beyond cringe-inducing.
First of all, FUCK Tom brady.
Second, who in their right mind thinks everybody likes that cheating asshole?
Thirdly, nobody likes the patriots except for assholes in Boston.
Fourthly, these actresses clearly did it for the money, which diminishes them in my mind.
It’s supposedly based on a true story but, people will not be interested in this.

Movies featuring elderly actors have been around for years. The popularity of the Golden Girls on tv probably made a lot of it possible.

I don't ever want to see an "old person goes on a bucket-list pilgrimmage" movie. Or a four old-friends movie, such as The Book Club, where the friendship is wholly improbable. Or one in which it's cute that a senior citizen is having sex. This movie fits into all these categories. The only saving grace is that Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton and a Nancy Meyers kitchen are not part of this.

Is there One gay man that DL likes????? Probably Monty Clift...but without going back that far...It's quite telling...why don't we support our own, do you think?

I just saw "80 for Brady".
You know a movie is in trouble when Tom Brady, who I can't stand, is the best, funniest thing about it.
And he isn't even that funny.
Truly, I feel embarrassed and bad for Field, Fonda, Moreno and Tomlin. Is old age really a time to be so desperate?
I thought it was the opposite; that if you had enough money, fame and a career, as these 4 have, that stood for itself, and the last thing you wanted was to debase yourself the way these 4 women do in "80 for Brady".
Ugh.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 4, 2023 2:16 AM |

I've never seen it, and don't intend to. Not sure why you think I'm "self-righteous" to point out that there aren't a lot of roles for women that age, so people take what they can get. That's a fact. If you don't like it, fine. But that's the way it is.

This is why I hate movie reviews.
I saw it today. Was it Casablanca? No but it took me out of my troubles for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. It’s not going to change the world. The script was fine and the four of them have great chemistry. I laughed and that’s all that mattered.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | February 4, 2023 11:32 PM |
Saw it today. My in-laws (who are in their 80s) wanted us to take them. It was just fine for what it was…a little fun afternoon flick. It was actually much better than I thought. I don’t think anyone was going in expecting Citizen Kane. Everyone in the audience other than my husband and I were 65+. Lots of laughter. I could have happily lived without ever seeing it, but it was a fun day. All the little senior citizens at the showing were having a good time, which was sweet. Hell, my husband and I are in our 50s, so I guess we are senior citizens, too. The in-laws enjoyed it; dubbed it “cute.”
I kept thinking of The Datalounge when Tom Brady was on the screen and all the delightfully bitchy things written about him here!
As for the actresses, Sally, naturally, came off the best, but they all were fine. I was surprised to see Sally Kirkland! Ultimately, don’t rush out to see it, but catch it when it starts streaming,,maybe on a rainy afternoon.

I went to the movie theatre to see this with friend yesterday. My God, it’s awful.

The extreme plastic surgery of Jane Fonda is jarring

R132 there’s plenty of projects on streaming they can do, not to mention some theatrical films outside the Marvel universe. Like I said up thread, I’m sure it was the money that talked that got them to do this. All actors do junk for the cash sometimes. It is what it is.

Actually Jane Fonda looks better in this than Austin Butler did in Elvis.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | February 5, 2023 4:08 PM |
R138 I’m saying in general, but I’m sure you knew that already. Rita doesn’t work as much as the other three. But there are more options for actors now than there has ever been. This movie has no pretense at being anything other than what it is. They were most likely made a lucrative offer and they took it. Sometimes you’re better off being practical and cashing in. I doubt the four of them will turn into Nic Cage and do solely crap films one right after the other.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | February 5, 2023 4:27 PM |
It came in 2nd, not first. Not bad for a shitty movie. They initially said $13 million but then downgraded it to $12.5.

R138 if I were them, I would cash out vis a vis commercials and endorsements and continue to do the Annette Bening kind of interesting roles which I’m sure don’t pay all that well but at least the chance to do good work is still there.
I’m all for making bank but I feel like that’s the more dignified way to do it - and at least you still get to act - and maybe snag a nomination if you’re lucky.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | February 5, 2023 5:15 PM |

To the poster who keeps defending these 4 ( and has stated they haven't watched this stupid, embarrassing, movie) are you under the impression I don't get it that ageism is real?
this is r85 and r91.
Of course ageism is real, and wrong.
But I don't back away an iota from declaring what my own eyes and ears saw when I watched this terrible movie- Field, Fonda, Moreno and Tomlin abased themselves by taking these roles.
And no amount of pointing out, correctly, that they want to work, and the scarcity of roles for women their age, takes away from that.

Conveniently and doubtless coincidentally, he won't have to share that money with Giselle.

R148 I assume he'll get offered a nice contract as a commentator or something. It won't compare to his football money, but still.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | February 5, 2023 5:52 PM |
R149 He got offered, and signed, a $375 million, 10-year contract with Fox Sports last week.
His football money, per se, wasn't all that great: about $235 million from the Pats after 20 years, another 80 million or so for the 3 years in Tampa.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 5, 2023 5:58 PM |
R150 So much for his retirement not being real this time.

I suspect it was an opportunity for the actresses to work together; nothing more, nothing less. Jane and Lily wrapped Grace and Frankie (which I loved! Can't beat Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston, Jane, and Lily together!). What are the chances they would have an opportunity like this again.? None of them are expecting a GG or Oscar. I'll watch it when it's available to view at home because I like all 4 actresses. I will, however, hurl when I see TB.

This was the type of movie that was guaranteed to at least make back its money. The biggest expense was the 4 leads salaries and compared to top Hollywood stars, they gave them only a small %. At this stage, the ladies were just happy to get out of the house to work a few days and the free lunches. There's just enough combined "star power" here to cover the very modest movie budget.

When Marlon Brando cheated on her Rita back in the day she briefly considered suicide. Those instincts should've returned when her agents offered her this pile of cow manure. The first half-season of GLEE (first 13 episodes) is some great TV and storytelling. If it was released as a 13-episode limited series, it would be hailed as a masterpiece. It was a rollercoaster half-season with a beginning, middle, and end. Lea Michele's character was very Tracy Flick-esque and delicious. She truly earned her Emmy nomination that year. People were not yet breaking out into musical fantasy sequences, and the music was not overwhelming every scene. It was simply a quirky dramedy series with occasional musical performances instead of what it became in the second half of Season 1 -- a jukebox musical of AutoTuned covers of latest pop hits.
What happened was Season 1 went on hiatus for the winter break and the soundtrack to the first half of Season 1 was released just before Christmas 1999 and became an enormous bestseller, peaking at #4 in the US and Canada, #3 in Australia, and #1 in the UK an Ireland. So when the show returned in April 2000, they put more focus on the music over anything else, because the goal now was to sell music, more than anything.
It's amazing how a show can change so much in just a few months.

It could have been better with the right cast - like drop Sally Field and Rita Moreno, and just add Dolly Parton for a '9 to 5' reunion. Get better writers, someone with comedy skills, and they could've had a fun movie with this concept. As it is now - don't bother.

I have thoughts
1) what happened to Lily Tomlin? It’s like her mouth doesn’t work and she talks strange. Also her face looks like her jaw has weights in them.
2) Poor Sally Field. You can tell she was embarrassed by this and she should have been.
3) Rita came off okay and gave heft to the dramatic scenes (if u can call them that) but I don’t think she was a good fit as she was clearly 90 and acted much older than the rest.
4) It’s amazing to me that Jane Fonda of Klute, Coming Home, and Julia became Jane Fonda of 80 for Brady.

When Jane Fonda returned to showbiz in 2005, I was surprised that she would choose "Monster-in-Law" as her comeback vehicle. Since then, she really hasn't tackled any roles demonstrative of her talent. But then again, good roles for 70+ women are few and far between. Yet still, "80 for Brady" is the best she can do?
