Here’s the story of a cute, but stupid, hiker who just had to be rescued from My. Baldy. He left the same day Sands did and he didn’t have appropriate equipment for the terrain and wrap.

Many years ago, an acquaintance of mine was cross country skiing on Mt Shasta. He went up higher than what was allowed, and he slipped into an icy ravine and broke an ankle. He wasn't able to climb out due to the ice and the broken ankle, and he died of exposure. It took weeks for search crews to find him because they didn't think to look in regions that were higher up than what was allowed.
Sometimes people do foolish things.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 25, 2023 12:50 AM |
R7 On the last thread there was a post that said Mt Baldy was 4,000 ' Maybe it was meant to be meters, because the summit is at over 10,000'. I've summited a couple of times; the summit is "bald" and not particularly steep... but that is almost more disorienting... I can imagine in the wind in winter it would be easy to get lost or confused at the top, and the trail up the bowl is steep...with an icy trail you could easily slip down, break a leg, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 25, 2023 12:50 AM |
There is not reason to believe he went up Mt. Baldy. He could be dead in a canyon.

This is the best online guide I’ve found for Mt. Baldy hiking. There is a good photo of the trail near the summit, showing how precarious it is and how it looks blanketed in snow. As the text notes, if you fall from this area, it’s to “a pcertain death.”

People get hooked on hiking, it is a natural high. For some, hiking is conducive to their good mental health. They need that time out there ALONE and away from the mobile devices. Sands more than likely has hiked alone even in precarious conditions without a problem many times before until this one time where he cannot make it back.
Last summer, a couple went out unwisely during the heat of summer with their dog and infant, they were quickly exposed to insanely hot temperatures and died. This is the sort of experience the couple had made many times previously and documented on their social media accounts. They did not have a death wish, they made a miscalculation that cost them their lives.

I was the one who said the summit was 4000+' and I was going off a Google search bc even when i skimmed the wiki article, I didn't see a height for the summit.
I kind of thought that sounded low; pretty sure I'd heard of people jumping off the summit and parasailing a looooooong way down.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 25, 2023 1:40 AM |
Also, I love hiking and have done a lot of it. But I don't favor hikes that are up very steep mountains; the closest I've come is doing an 11 mile hike up Mt. Tam on the Marin Headlands. If I was in better shape, I could see doing steeper hikes, but that one was pretty tiring. (FYI, it was an out and back hike). I prefer ones that are not so tiring and allow me to enjoy the views instead of just wanting it to be done and over with.

So much craziness on Mt. Baldy. This really happened in December 2021: Two hikers slid 150 feet down the mountain. They needed rescue, but they both lost their phones. However, they landed near a phone that was left behind when ANOTHER hiker slid at the same place 5 days earlier. They were able to use that phone to call for help. The battery was at 1%.

here's an idea. Since thousands of yahoos are walking that tightrope, why don't the put a guideline. Or some nets. Because it would kill the natural aspect of it? Is there signage - warning inexperienced hikers to be more careful at the peak? Maybe not to attempt it but take a safer, amateur route?

R21 Yep, I think the more likely scenario is he slipped into one of the canyons, broke some bones and couldn't get back up.
R58 I've been to the summit twice, and it's not as perilous as some of those pics (and stories) might suggest. You don't have to do a loop; many if not most just go up and back the same, relatively safe trail. Even at that section at the top people are saying is so dangerous, the slope on each side isn't really that steep... except in a couple of places if you slip and step off the trail... you, well, step back on the trail. Gravity and physics, your friends. HOWEVER, ice and wind and ice and wind... yeah, changes everything.

Yeah, I think the missing (then found dead) Pleasanton Hiker was also a longer one. Also, Gaby Petito kind of fits this too. Then they found that cute missing hiker (dead) at around the same time as Gaby was missing and he'd been missing for awhile. As I recall, that was a smaller thread. Then Sherry Papini, who was a "missing" runner...and wasn't really even missing.
And did they ever find that hiker in Washington who went out alone in a National Forest a few months back?

R95, it's not that surprising that this story is getting a lot of interest on DL -- it involves the disappearance of an actor in the mountains, plus many DLers have fond memories of Julian's naked scene in "A Room With A View":

I've only been lost while solo hiking once, and it was in the high Sierras near Lake Tahoe, and I realized I was lost and realized a storm was moving in at just about the same moment! Of course since I'm me, I didn't panic, I was in a valley with a lake in the middle, and I just looked around and picked out the area where the trail had entered the valley. Sure enough, I was right, the trail was where I thought it was, and I made it back to my car before the rain got me too wet.
A couple of years later, a co-worker started talking about the single most terrifying experience of her life, when she'd gotten lost in the same region with the same weather conditions! She wasn't even alone, she was with a more experienced hiker, but she'd panicked anyway. If she'd been alone she'd have probably gotten herself lost.

R113 r109 Interesting. Always thought saying “the Sierra,” instead of the Sierras, was due to 70s activism, & a little misguided. We say the Rockies, the Alps, and the Andes, it’s how English speakers nickname mountain ranges. So even though sierra means mountain range in Spanish, the Sierras oughta be acceptable in English, ¿verdad?

R126 Yes, there are mountain lions in that area. I remember one of the most popular postcards available for sale in Mt. Baldy Village was of a mountain lion sitting on a boulder near the mountain’s summit.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | January 25, 2023 3:23 PM |
R126 Mountain lions prey on mule deer which are prevalent in the San Gabriel Mountains. In winter, the deer migrate to lower elevations, so I think the mountain lions would also do so. However, if there was a lion on the upper mountain and Julian was the only edible available, a lion could have gotten him.

R120 That was an interesting article, thank you. I am a native Californian who has hiked in California mountains for over 50 years. Checking my own usage: I do say "the Sierras", but also say, "the Sierra Nevada", and where I go a lot, I'd say "the Eastern Sierra", singular.
No question that English usage has put pressure on form, and "Sierras" is common, if not "standard" yet.
I wonder if some of the critics in that article - who say it's a violation of, and disrespect for, Spanish, would also say Latinx. I am a left wing, Spanish speaker, and although I get the political impact and intent of Latinx, no Spanish speaker I know outside the Academy uses the term.
And, last, to bring this post back to the topic of the thread.... I have hiked in the mountains around Baldy since I was a kid. We would call that range "the San Gabriels" - plural.

I think plural nicknames for immense mountain ranges make the mountains sound more individual and therefore “friendly” to hikers. On the other hand, “the Sierra Nevada” sounds more intimidating than “the Sierras.“ It’s a colloquialism, so I don’t understand the debate over its usage. I’m more concerned about Californians calling “San Pedro” “San Pee-dro.” What’s up with that?
by Anonymous | reply 133 | January 25, 2023 4:52 PM |
R121, the California trails are safe when it comes to other human beings. It also would have been really hard to move a dead body away in those treacherous conditions.

The most dangerous thing about the San Gabriels are how steep they are. Unprepared city people do so many dumb things/don't realize the danger.

R133 Because they are speaking English. For example I bet you say Pear Ess, not Pah Ree for the capital of Frances. I bet you say Mex - ee- coh, not Meh - hee - coh... because you are speaking English.
Even Los Angeles... to apply your frustration with Pee-dro... you'd recommend the largest city in CA be pronounce. Lowz - An - He - Les.

Re: the Sierra debate. It’s not about grammar, or respecting language. It’s about redundancy. Sierra means “mountains”, therefore Sierra Nevada is already a plural name. Adding an an S to either word is unnecessary and redundant. Other place names such as the Rocky Mountains, Cascade Mountains, become the Rockies and Cascades to refer to the entire range. I understand the urge to do the same with the Sierra. But Sierra Nevada means “snow-covered mountains”. The extra S wouldn’t even make sense.

I haven’t noticed any comment in the news from James Ivory. He gave Julian Sands one of his first roles in A Room With A View. That’s actually the only really good film Sands was ever in. Sands was due to play the title role in Maurice, Ivory’s next film. He backed out at the last minute and James Wilby got the part. That was one of the stupidest career decisions any actor has ever made. Does anyone know why Sands backed out? Afraid to play a gay character?
by Anonymous | reply 151 | January 25, 2023 11:13 PM |
Room With a View is a favorite. Daniel Day Lewis is very funny in it. Julian Sands? Never looked better.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | January 25, 2023 11:31 PM |
In a 1987 interview, Ivory said Sands had backed out of "Maurice" "for personal reasons." Sands' first marriage (to the journalist Sarah Sands) was unravelling and they were divorced in 1987. By coincidence, Sarah's brother, Kit Hesketh-Harvey, was chosen by Ivory to co-write the screen adaptation of "Maurice" when Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Ivory's regular collaborator, said she considered the novel to be minor Forster and didn't want to adapt it.

UPDATE from the San Bernandino County Sheriff: The search for Julian Sands continues by air only. The California Highway Patrol –Valley Division Air Ops from Auburn, California, is currently assisting us in the search using a RECCO device RECCO - Be Searchable. RECCO technology can detect RECCO reflective material, electronics, & in some cases, credit cards. Actor Julian Sands is due to join his four brothers for their regular weekly pub meeting in their native Yorkshire in two days. But there is little doubt now — even as the family’s mood oscillates between hope and fear — that he will be absent.
Each week, the four UK-based Sands brothers: Nick, Robin, Jeremy and Quentin — who live a short drive from each other in Yorkshire — meet for a drink, and sometimes a meal, near Gargrave.
‘And at least three times a year, bless him, Julian makes sure he comes home to see us, just for the one night,’ says Nick. ‘He gets the train up from London to Skipton, then never wants a lift to Gargrave. Instead, he walks the five miles over our local hill, Sharp Haw, which looks down on our village, then breezes through the front door of my office there.
Nick had been scheduled to meet Julian in London this week, where he was due to discuss a film project followed by their Yorkshire trip.
For now, his fellow Monday Club members wait in hopeful anticipation. Nick has a bottle of claret his brother gave to him and he wants nothing more than to see him ‘striding down our hill, in defiance of all of us, into Gargrave, to share it with us.’

During the 19 years I lived in San Diego, I used to go up to Julian occasionally. A challenge, even in the best weather, because there were only 2 different routes to drive up there, both very steep and twisting. Accidents are frequent.
Apart from that, it's a pleasant getaway, cooler in summer. And its apple pies are justifiably famous. In addition, after a season of wildfires, it was found that daffodils thrived in the area; so residents went about planting them everywhere.
Daffodils are my second favorite flower, after Hawaiian plumeria. Since moving west, I missed them. But, somehow, I never got around to driving up there to see them.
So now they’re famous for apples and daffodils.

by Anonymous | reply 263 | February 2, 2023 12:16 AM |
No, he hasn’t been found. They’re still searching by helicopter and drones. There are dangerous winds and threats of more avalanches on the upper slopes where Sands was hiking. Local authorities say conditions on Mt. Baldy are now “seriously treacherous.”

I’ve just returned from skiing at Big Bear, which is about 50 miles east of Baldy. There was a tremendous depth of snow at Big Bear, the heaviest in years, so it must also be very thick at Mt. Baldy. If Julian Sands fell and was injured or killed, the heavy snowfall would have easily covered him, making his body undetectable by aerial surveillance. Even worse, there have been avalanches at Big Bear and Mt. Baldy. If an avalanche buried him, his body probably wouldn’t be found until Spring.

Dangerous and possible record breaking windchills in northern New England for Friday and Saturday. The winds are going to be strong and the chill on Mt Washington may reach minus 50 degrees. They really ought to close trails like Mt. Baldy during winter snow conditions or summer heat waves, but it's hard to effectively close a hiking trail - determined hikers feel totally free to walk around any "DO NOT ENTER" sign or climb any fence, and are fit enough to get around any sort of barrier the forest service has available. Even if the road to the trailhead is closed, people like Sands would be fit enough to park downhill and walk a few extra miles, and get themselves in trouble in spite of the official attempts to save their fool lives.
Every corpse on Everest was once a highly motivated and extremely fit individual, after all.

I'm actually shocked that NONE of his co-stars of ARWAV issued a pained statement, declaring how wonderful he is/was and how devastated they are. He must be quite a tool. Did Ivory even bothered to say anything ? he must be senile anyway. Maggie is above social media, and so are DDL and Bonham-Carter, but at least Simon Callow ? Funny how everyone involved in this instant classic became a mega star, except for the lead. Like all of you who were teenagers when it first came out, my videotape of the movie was embarrassingly white stripped during the naked pond scene, due to heavy slow-motion replay. Poor guy was evidently not well liked in the business, I wonder why exactly ?

by Anonymous | reply 318 | February 5, 2023 12:10 AM |
R317 I had wondered why I couldn’t find any comments from any of the ARWAV crew. I thought at least James Ivory would have said something. I had wondered why Julian had backed out of Maurice at the last minute. That was certainly a very bad career move. I thought it might have been because Julian didn’t want to play a gay character and this had led to a falling out with Ivory, hence Ivory giving no public comment on Julian’s disappearance. Maybe we’ll never know.
by Anonymous | reply 319 | February 5, 2023 12:18 AM |
Ivory said in 1987 Sands withdrew from "Maurice" for personal reasons. His marriage was crumbling and he was divorced that same year.

I didn't think he was very ggod, or attractive in the movie, but I must say I felt a little pang at the news of his, well, death, let's not fool ourselves. It brought me back to these wonderful years of MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE, or ANOTHER COUNTRY, when it seemed to this teenager that fucking hot guys was a completely normal and desirable thing. Nobody said it was gay, back then, or these were gay movies. not everything and everyone were tagged and branded. Good times

Oh yeah, back in the 80s guys fucked each other all the time in mainstream movies and no one thought twice about it. (Commences series of eye rolls)

by Anonymous | reply 322 | February 5, 2023 12:31 AM |
R320 I can easily imagine James Ivory invoking ‘personal reasons’ as a euphemism for more than Sands’ divorce proceedings. It’s notable that Sands never worked with Ivory again. I also wonder if Sands was uncomfortable with playing a gay character.
It may be an unpopular opinion here, but I don’t really think Sands is a good actor. He has an interesting presence at times, but he doesn’t convey much character in his performances. In ARWAV, he was vapid and blank-faced. Daniel Day Lewis, despite having to play a ridiculous character, at least gave a fully rounded performance. He was even able to engender sympathy at times.

I'll stick up for the deceased here. He was fine in Room with a View because all he had to play was the natural, hunky, truth and beauty-seeking, sexy child of god. He was the foil to DDL's mannered, unsexy aesthete. He didn't have to do much acting, he just had to show up. (Well done, James Ivory.)
As to his botched career--maybe he wasn't in it for stardom? It takes a lot to have and maintain an A-list career. Maybe being a jobbing actor with lots of time for family and outdoor pursuits was good enough for him.

R325 I’m now wondering if playing a gay man in Maurice was more than he could take in the early part of his career. He had the chance to play the lead role in a film by a director who was riding the acclaim of ARWAV. It’s hard to imagine any young actor passing up that opportunity. There were several intimate scenes in Maurice, including two males kissing. That may have frightened him.
It wasn’t until 35 years into his career that he played a gay role, his only performance as a gay man. The character was older and there were no intimate scenes in which his masculinity would be challenged. Also, at this point in his career, he was working playing minor parts in only one or two productions a year. He was probably accepting just about anything he was offered.

Julian Sands is supposed to be an experienced hiker who was very familiar with Mt. Baldy. I’ve read that he hiked it numerous times, so he must have been carrying the right equipment. It’s a little baffling why they can’t find any trace of him. Several other hikers who got into trouble on the mountain have been rescued, but not Julian.

by Anonymous | reply 377 | February 8, 2023 12:47 AM |
I think his body will probably be found at the bottom of the Baldy Bowl. The trail that traverses the rim of the bowl is one of the longest segments of the trail to the mountain’s summit. It’s also very precarious, with a drop of 500 to 900 feet. I’ve hiked it many times, but never in winter. It’s treacherous enough when dry. I’ve read many stories of hikers in winter realizing that the trail is actually a thick slab of ice with a deceptive cover of snow. Going up the trail, the precipitous drop is to the hiker’s right. To the left is a steep upward slope. Large chunks of ice the size of bowling balls or larger routinely break off and roll down the mountain striking hikers. This happened to one of the hikers who recently had to be rescued. Fortunately, he wasn’t knocked off the trail and down into the bowl. There’s a good possibility that this is what happened to Sands.

R379, indeed, a woman who died on Baldy this winter was seen tumbling down a slope without making any apparent effort to stop herself. It is thought that she may have been hit by ice and knocked unconscious. My guess is that Julian Sands died in an avalanche, which is at least a quicker death than being stuck on the mountain for days.

Still reporting from THE KILLING FIELDS. Julian is so beautiful in this. So young. Strange to think that while I'm watching, his dead body is still lying on mt Baldy under a pile of snow. This has got to be one of the weirdest celebrity deaths of all time. Also because it's a shout out to a long gone era. I was fckng 15 when A ROOM WITH A VIEW opened, and had never heard of, or given a thought to the guy again. Now he's entered the pantheon of my 80's heroes

Ending my report here : KILLING FIELDS is a great movie, highly recommandable, I really enjoyed it. Beautiful acting, beautiful storytelling, amazing cinematography. I loved the first part better than the rest. Ben is a naughty boy, Argo is a carbon copy of it. The two romantic leads are perfect. Sam is HAWT. He's much hotter as a gay man. I felt sorry that the other actor was murdered, his life story is as riveting as the movie itself, and he was very handsome and charismatic. I also felt sorry for myself for not seeing it at the time. Julian was stunning, and very good. It's amazing that he didn't become a STAR after this and ARWAV. Also, I want to go back to the 80's.

What r379 describes is more like alpining, which a lot of people like doing- I really wouldn't call it hiking. Did it twice (Mt. Baldy and somewhere in the Sierras), it's way too taxing- you have to wear crampons, your backpack (if you're doing overnights-mine was 35-50 lbs), and sometimes if it's too steep, you have to go up sideways, foot over foot, rather than your body being oriented forward. It's just fucking trudging to the top. And if you're in altitude, it feels like you have asthma with the thinner air.
If Julian brought overnight supplies (sleeping bag, food, tinder, etc), he might be camping out in a hollow, or mini cave. He wouldn't die of dehydration though, because of the snow.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | February 8, 2023 1:41 PM |

R382 You call people who engage in risky sports “reckless idiots.” There’s a lot of truth in that. But it’s possible to take knowing risks with a level of skill that is equal to the risk. In my twenties and early thirties, one of my favorite sports was mountain climbing. I took classes in it and spent a lot of time on what’s known as a “practice wall” that simulates climbing challenges. There was a practice wall at a facility in West LA where I spent a required 100 hours before making my first climb. I climbed with experienced, knowledgeable people, and we had the right equipment. I never climbed in the winter, but there was often snow and ice at upper elevations. When we reached the summit or whatever our climbing goal was, there was an incredible sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. But I’ll also admit that there’s a lot of narcissism in all this.
Nowadays, I limit climbing to whatever can be done without any specialized equipment. I pretty much limit my activity to simple hiking, arduous or not.
Julian Sands was apparently a very experienced climber, so I’m sure he had the required skills and equipment. What he lacked was simple common sense. He went hiking alone, which is the single worst thing a climber can do. When I mentioned that there’s narcissism involved in completing a climb, there’s an even greater level of narcissism in thinking that as a lone person, you can meet any challenge. Julian Sands must have been this narcissistic and has paid the price.

by Anonymous | reply 415 | February 8, 2023 2:13 PM |
I'm normally very judgy, but I don't get why people are being so judgmental here. Of course he knew he was taking a risk. He'd almost died on a mountain many years ago. He knew it was dangerous. He chose to take the risk. Calling him narcissistic or stupid or whatever is silly. Different people, different choices.
(I do understand about people being pissed off about emergency services being forced to look for people who hike on steep, snowy mountains. But driving is also dangerous; cops and EMTs have to scrape people off the highway.)
by Anonymous | reply 416 | February 8, 2023 4:58 PM |
Look. Anytime a person engages in some high risk foolishness he puts others at risk. Period. The people who refuse to evacuate for hurricanes or tornadoes, and fires, and go mountain climbing in snow and ice etc. all depend on others to rescue them if they have bad luck or fuck up.

R417 has one excellent answer for you. Another answer is that presumably everyone who indulges in high-risk activity for no good reason other than thrills has at least SOME family and/or loved ones in their lives, so their death while doing something completely unnecessary deeply impacts those people.

Received Pronunciation (RP) is the standard dialect of British English. It is the accent of English that is considered to be standard or neutral. RP is also known as the Queen’s English, Oxford English, or BBC English. The term “Received Pronunciation” was first used by Alexander Ellis in 1869.

Plenty of people misjudge the weather or base their decision to go ahead on the last time they hiked the area, unaware of changes or differences since then, and that's not a lack of common sense. R433, perhaps you missed the little tidbit of info that Sands almost died on a mountain years ago. If someone has a near-death experience when doing something that's completely unnecessary, except for the thrill factor, and then chooses to do it AGAIN, then I would say that person lacks simple common sense.

"What he lacked was simple common sense. He went hiking alone, which is the single worst thing a climber can do."
Worse than going hiking alone, was that he went hiking in SERIOUS storm conditions. The week he went missing was a week when California saw the most serious storms it's seen for a decade or two, when there was deep snow where it wouldn't be expected, stealth ice, landslides and avalanches, etc. I know Sands had lived in California for "twenty years", but as both his work and his hobbies meant frequent travel, he may not have been in California when it was being seriously pounded by winter storms, he may not have realized that he was walking into conditions where the wind might blow him across the ice on the trail and into the Baldy Bowl avalanche basin, or whatever happened.
Well, there are worse ways to go out than to die doing something you love, and I say that because I'm in my sixties too and I still take risks. If I go out now, then boo hoo I won't have to deal with old age, so bring on the sea kayaks and live volcanoes! I just hope it was quick for him. Or for me, if it comes to that.

In planning a hike in a wilderness area, two of the most important things are to let someone know where you’ll be and to have at least one hiking partner. Julian told his wife where he would be hiking that Friday and what time he intended to be home. But he went alone, which was foolish, especially for a location such as Mt. Baldy. His wife contacted the Sheriff’s office Friday evening when he hadn’t returned. The Sheriff started a foot search that evening, despite deteriorating weather conditions. This continued on Saturday, until a heavy storm set in, but an aerial search was begun. No time was lost in searching for him. His body must have been covered in snow after he presumably fell, since there was heavy snowfall that started on Friday night. He could also have been buried under an avalanche. I don’t think his body is going to be found until the snow and ice begin to melt.

Years ago I did a snow hike and lost my footing and was unable to self-arrest. I remained surprisingly calm while sliding and thought this is it. Luckily for me, I hit a lone scrubby pine which stopped my slide into oblivion. In spring they found a young woman's body in the area, and I never felt like hiking in snow again. It really scared me. I still ski, however.
I think other hikers will find his body; he probably bivouacked but still died of exposure.

I love Julian to death, but "leading man" is a bit far fetched. He had a prominent part in ONE hit movie, that was massively women driven. Carter was the lead, and Smith was a co-lead IMO. Also, he looked divine, but spoke all of his lines as if his brackets had suddenly unhooked and been caught in in tongue in the middle of the take. (which might account for his non-career)

by Anonymous | reply 514 | February 13, 2023 2:22 PM |
I’ve been looking at some of the hiking/mountaineering websites I often use, and every one has cautions about hazardous conditions. People are even reporting that it’s difficult to go beyond the ski hut, and that’s far from the Baldy Bowl trail that Julian was probably on. There’s apparently huge, thick slabs of ice that make it difficult to dig in crampons just to follow a trail. There are also large chunks of ice that are hurtling down slopes, endangering hikers. No matter what time of year, there are powerful winds in the area. They’re apparently especially strong today. They can easily cause a hiker to lose his balance. On top of all this, more snow is expected tomorrow. With conditions like this, more foot searches for Julian are going to be difficult.
by Anonymous | reply 515 | February 13, 2023 3:54 PM |
Hiking up Mount Baldy doesn’t sound like much fun to me.

A renowned climber-skier named Zach Milligan died on the weekend climbing alone in the Canadian Rockies; he was 42. The linked profile from a couple of years ago gives a good sense of the psychology of extreme solo climbers.

Thanks R522. Interesting read!
by Anonymous | reply 523 | February 15, 2023 6:57 PM |
R522 I’ve been following Zach Milligan’s adventures for years, but I hadn’t heard about his death. That’s very sad. I was a climber for about 15 years when I was younger, but never anything as adventurous as what Milligan did. Ice climbing, in particular, is something I never would have attempted. As for skiing down Half Dome, the mind boggles!
Earlier in this thread, I talked about the hazards of Julian hiking in a dangerous area with precipitous drops when there was snow and ice on the ground. My brother and I arrived in Mammoth last night for some skiing. This morning, I slipped on some ice in a restaurant parking lot. As I fell, I managed to set off someone’s car alarm. Better than falling to my death down Baldy Bowl.

Here’s the weather forecast for Mt Baldy for the next few days. The chart also shows the high and low temperatures for four different elevations of the mountain. It looks like there will be generally clear weather, but the temperature at upper elevations, where Julian likely is, will be well below freezing. This should be good weather for the planned ground searches.

R543 At least this hiker posted his hiking route on the internet. But apparently he couldn’t follow his planned route and got lost due to the heavy snowfall. And the worst part of it is that he went ALONE. It sounds like he may have fallen and then died of exposure.

R556 Incredible that more than 20 people conducted a ground search a few days ago and couldn’t find anything. They apparently were searching where a Recco device had indicated a chance of something. Avalanches of not just snow but huge slabs of ice are known to occur in that area. Julian is likely buried under tons of ice. On top of all this, one of the biggest and coldest storms in years is due to hit the area in a day or two.

There’s an official Winter Storm Warning in effect for the next few days for Mt. Baldy. Heavy snowfall predicted that will bury Julian even deeper. That earlier prediction that he wouldn’t be found until the end of August might be accurate after all.

There is NO point in sending Search-and-Rescue up there! Corpses covered by snow are invisible, and just going up there in the snow, ice, and wind is dangerous for the searchers.
There can't be pressure from other hikers, we hikers and climbers understand that although we're willing to risk our own lives, we don't want other to risk theirs to save us from the consequences of our actions - especially if the search is obviously futile. So any pressure is probably coming from some fool administrator who doesn't want to be known as the administrator who failed to find a celebrity corpse, or members of the public who don't know enough to be taken seriously. The ONLY sensible thing to do at this point, is to wait for the snow to melt. So what if that takes until August, waiting won't do Sands any harm.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | February 22, 2023 12:06 AM |
The storm hitting CA over the next few days makes searching impossible. I suspect we won't find any trace of him until mid- March.

It's odd how they found Robert Gregory but not Julian.
A California hiker who went missing a month ago has been found dead near a frozen summit in the San Gabriel Mountains, officials said.
The body was discovered about 300 feet below the summit of Mount Islip in the Angeles National Forest
Search and rescue personnel confirmed that the hiker’s body was recovered in "snow/ice" on the mountain.
Gregory died of blunt force trauma and his manner of death was ruled an accident, the Los Angeles County coroner said.

R569 Those two young hikers who had to be rescued by helicopter from the side of Mt. Baldy yesterday got into trouble because “their equipment failed.” What does that mean? Their crampons failed? Their ice tools failed? At least their cell phone didn’t fail and they were able to call for help. It sounds like these two guys were inexperienced and foolishly set out to hike a dangerous mountain during a period of bad weather. The people who have to save this type of hiker must really be fed up at having to risk their own safety to save them.
We’re in Mammoth, snowed-in and stuck here until the weather improves. It’s extra cold and windy, which makes skiing less fun, so we stayed in today. What we saved in not having to buy lift tickets will be spent on some icy martinis.
