All of this started with M&M carving to the left's insistence that gender stereotypes were harmful to all the trans/non-binary youths, especially with the hyper feminized brown & green M&Ms. At the time they released a statement to the press pronouncing their commitment to inclusivity & to deconstructing social stereotypes of especially women. So claiming that this is resultant of the right's culture wars ia just evidence of how Fox isn't the only outlet filling their viewers minds with spun bullshit.

M&M gave in to the biggest mouths on social media, from the left, and screwed with legacy branding that consumers across every persuasion recognized & appreciated. Loyal consumers had every reasonable right to object to the change & the company suffered for messing with a concept that needed no messing with. Most people understandably, regardless of political affiliation, don't understand or even care about this current contradictory & scattered gender platform, so to inject it into beloved cartoony branding was plain ignorant.
