What secret things do you do, that no one else knows about?
I often take quick weekend trips thousands of miles away from home, and my co-workers have no idea.
I'll leave on a Friday after work and return on a Sunday. Usually on cross-country trips, but sometimes internationally.
I'm not humble bragging. I just do it to re-charge because I hate where I live, and I love to do exciting things on a spur of the moment.
So I'll look for cheap flights and find a good hotel deal and stay in a random city over night Saturday, then fly home on Sunday.
It really helps me to re-charge and break the monotony of my boring office job.
My co-workers ask me "How was your weekend," and I'll say "It was okay. You know, the usual."
Even though I flew to Europe overnight on Friday, and returned Sunday night. Tee hee.

I'm curious where you live, and why you hate it?

That sounds exhausting, but you “do you.”

My weekends are heavily loaded WITH 50 of my co-workers. I feel I have a leg up on you.

OP must work for an airline and has flight benefits.

It can be very exhausting R3.
I usually spend the rest of the week (after my trip) catching up on my rest, because I'm pretty jet lagged.
But it's still fun.
No R5. No flight benefits. There are deals to be had, usually from November through February.

I do nothing. That’s my secret. I sit in my house most of the time and entertain myself because I hate (interacting with) other people.
Most people are eager to go out and rub up against other humans and argue and deal with other people. And I don’t. My boss is from a certain culture that is extremely loud and constantly social. Everything is constant talking and arguing and being the loudest guy in the room. And he can’t stand it when I just silently nod my head as he goes on and on about his weekend and his damn kids and everything else. It’s hilarious, but I just can’t be bothered to care.

That sounds awesome, OP; I wish I could afford do that.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 23, 2023 4:03 PM

You do sound quite adventurous OP, in a good way. One day in a foreign city seems kind of nuts to me, but I have known people that actually like the whole bit, including the airline flight and everything. A lot of people hate that, but some I know grow to love it. Are you racking up a lot of flyer miles at least?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 23, 2023 4:08 PM
|
Not much, R10.
Because I seek out cheaper flights, I don't get as many miles.
The airlines award miles based on price, and not distance.
So the cheaper the flight, the less miles you get.
Also, airlines are making mileage award trips more expensive.

That's cool OP. Can you give us a region where you live? I don't think I could do that internationally, but I would love to do it within the US. What do you do for accommodations? Last minute hotels?

I tell the work people I'm going away EVERY time I take vacation time. Whether I'm in town or not. I'm not going to check email, phone and generally be available or that will become the norm.

Somewhat similar to R7.
I need time to recharge and be away from other people.
I used to love travel, but now it's unappealing to me.

My favorite part of the week is Friday evening when I get home and lock my door because that is the start of the longest time I get without interacting with other people.
But to answer OP, I guess it's that I am stoned all of the time. Maybe my coworkers know but they've never let on.

Lmao R21, I go to work with a residual high often (sometimes after downing 100 mg of edibles/tinctures at 6PM the previous night…lordt). I can do it for a while, but as my tolerance and dosage grows, the increasing paranoia typically forces me to take a tolerance break most of the time. When I’m just sitting down and panicking or I’m constantly angry that I’m not high; that’s when I know it’s too much.
But I was vaping like a chimney last night and I’m in a lovely mood today 😊

I am very vague about my vacation plans/destinations which are always in a remote area with sketchy WIFI. Even if it's a week on Cape Cod I will tell them I spent most of it on a friend's boat and there was no service.

I genuinely feel sorry for people who cannot get away from their jobs on their days off/vacations.
To be clear, this is not a dig at you or anyone else, because I know what you mean. I just think it sucks that people have the audacity to try to contact you during those times.
If I’m not working, I couldn’t give a shit if the place burned down. I’ll find out when I get back.

I worldbuild. I create elaborate sci-fi, fantasy and some old school dramatic stories and settings, but don’t actually write earnestly. The parameters of the worlds and lists of characters are recorded in hundreds of notes and MS Office documents. Most involve concepts (but usually not characters) stolen from notable media, for example: tangible soul particles from Bleach, Ichor from Mortal Instruments, gravity manipulation from various sci-fi shows/films, or the silly character motivations from an online fiction repository.
I just finished Dark, which has me wanting to create my own time loop these days.

Seems like OP could achieve a similar effect by driving or flying 300-500 miles away or so. Seems like a waste to fly to Europe, stay overnight in a hotel, then fly right back. Not even considering a carbon footprint.

I turn my phone off. I light a few candles. Snort four lines of ketamine. Lay down on my giant Big Joe bean bag. Put on Kraftwerk, classical, Japanese ambient music. Wear a sleeping mask. Slide a 25 lb. weighted blanket over my naked body. And for forty minutes or so float in space.

Also, does the ketamine wear off in 40 minutes? Seems like a short high.

I like fanfiction. I’ve written some. Reading it is better. People are very creative.
I just read a long story about Mary and Rhoda as late life lesbians. Whoever wrote it did a really good job! Stayed very true to character.
“Oz” fanfiction is very good too.

You need to take your act on THE ROAD! Book hotel rooms and do your plays in private there!
You can say wearily, “Sure, I’ve played New York,” or brightly, “That reminds me of a funny story, from when I was doing ‘Dreamgirls’ in Chicago…”
