Liza - Don't Drop Turds

by Anonymousreply 1January 23, 2023 12:22 PM

I'd love to hear Neil Tennant singing this. I wonder if they did a PSB demo.

by Anonymousreply 2January 23, 2023 12:29 PM

It's fabuloush!

by Anonymousreply 3January 23, 2023 12:33 PM

OP have you only recently discovered Liza's masterpiece album?

by Anonymousreply 4January 23, 2023 12:36 PM

I was scrolling my FB timeline and there it was. I got sucked in until the end.

by Anonymousreply 5January 23, 2023 12:37 PM

She looks so young in this video. It was shot in 1989 so I guess she was about 43 years old.

by Anonymousreply 6January 23, 2023 12:45 PM

She was at the height of her powers!

by Anonymousreply 7January 23, 2023 12:49 PM

That entire album is amazing. I've been listening to "Rent" on repeat so many, many times.. Fantastic vocals.

by Anonymousreply 8January 23, 2023 12:51 PM

So why did she drop this one then?

by Anonymousreply 9January 23, 2023 12:56 PM

I still love this song!

by Anonymousreply 10January 23, 2023 1:00 PM

Had the continued with this type of music, she might have had a different, more interesting career. Unfortunately she followed this up with world arena tour with Frank and Sammy.

by Anonymousreply 11January 23, 2023 1:03 PM

A lot of her career was dropping her "work" and everyone waiting to watch if it would explode with a stink bomb or fireworks.

Liza, don't drop stink bombs.

Like this.

by Anonymousreply 12January 23, 2023 1:09 PM

Few things were less enticing in 1989 than Liza shaking her tookus.

by Anonymousreply 13January 23, 2023 1:10 PM

Fiershe!

by Anonymousreply 14January 23, 2023 1:19 PM

Like "Lucky Lady?" "Rent A Cop?" Marrying David Gest?

by Anonymousreply 15January 23, 2023 1:24 PM

Yes, I've seen the new rumor on Twitter and that is NOT me in OP's video. It hurts all the more because Liza is a dear friend who certainly doesn't deserve this either. I'm literally sobbing right now!

by Anonymousreply 16January 23, 2023 1:52 PM

This was all supposed to make her a later-in-life-pop star.

I sort of wish it would have worked. How fun would that have been?

Her follow-up album with Full Force (Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam) would have been amazing.

by Anonymousreply 17January 23, 2023 2:03 PM

Pet shop boysh are the besht

by Anonymousreply 18January 23, 2023 2:11 PM

I love the Results album. It was a chance for them to work with "mature" performers and sort of give them a different angle. They did it with Dusty Springfield on her Reputation album (about a year after Results), and also worked with Tina Turner (to a lesser extent) in the early 90s. Liza's versions of some of their 80s pop songs (like "Rent" and "Tonight Is Forever") showed the strength of their songwriting, as well. They made songs that could work beyond the synth pop sound.

by Anonymousreply 19January 23, 2023 2:12 PM

upsche and downsch

by Anonymousreply 20January 23, 2023 2:41 PM

Her clothes in the video are so weird. In the non-fantasy parts when she's not wearing the mindresses with long streaming scarves, she wears overalls or denim overall-dresses with pockets.

by Anonymousreply 21January 23, 2023 2:56 PM

I am surprised that some gays don't like Results. I assumed it was beloved. It's the album and performance that has everything. Liza is a fantastic entertainer, even if she often does not have fantastic taste. I think the lack of taste is why she never became a celebrated recording artist. If she had good writers and producers, she would deliver. But she seemed to just take whatever came her way, with no overall artistic vision of herself.

by Anonymousreply 22January 23, 2023 3:05 PM

Maybe I lived in a closed environment but every single person I knew owned this album.

by Anonymousreply 23January 23, 2023 3:34 PM

I saw her at Radio City in 1991 for her Stepping Out tour. 10th-row center, I could see the sweat fly from her hair when she suddenly turned her head. She was a powerhouse.

by Anonymousreply 24January 23, 2023 3:52 PM

A powerhoushe during my Shtepping Out tour!

Shweat shuddenly shpraying from my shcalp!

by Anonymousreply 25January 23, 2023 4:28 PM

1989 was an amazing year for women in their 40s having hit records.

Liza, Donna Summer, Tina Turner, Deborah Harry, Cher, Alice Cooper, Bette Midler, Loleatta Holloway.

As a young teenager I was so upset that Don't Drop Bombs missed the top 40. I remain upset 33 years late.

by Anonymousreply 26January 23, 2023 4:43 PM

No one I knew owned this album, but I was 21 when it was released. No one my age was paying attention to Liza's attempt at a pop music career.

by Anonymousreply 27January 23, 2023 4:50 PM

R27 what music was popular in Omaha?

by Anonymousreply 28January 23, 2023 5:36 PM

The video casting Liza as a victim of domestic violence (in B&W) who retreats mentally during the abuse and imagines herself as other personalities (in colour) was quite high concept back then.

by Anonymousreply 29January 23, 2023 5:47 PM

R23 only knew gays

by Anonymousreply 30January 23, 2023 5:54 PM

R27 Liza is old gay royalty. Pet shop boys too. It was a perfect gay mix. It wasn’t considered unhip at the time but it wasn’t a hit record (outside of singles targeted for the dance/club chart) in the US.

I remember seeing the CD in a record shop in 1989. My boyfriend bought it. I refused to listen to it (at the time) due to not liking Liza’s voice or music. I didn’t know until years later that it was actually good and not garbage. I was 16 yrs old when it was first released. I have the remastered deluxe CD that came out a few yrs ago.

by Anonymousreply 31January 23, 2023 6:02 PM

r19 Love it! And I agree it shows their songwriting talent transcended pop. “Rent” holds up even sung as a torch songs and Sondheim isn’t bad given the PSB treatment. I also thought Liza looked great in the music videos.

by Anonymousreply 32January 23, 2023 6:13 PM

I wonder why Liza didn’t try and pivot towards pop music when she was at her peak (early 70’s/cabaret era). I think it could’ve worked with the mellow/soft pop music of the era.

by Anonymousreply 33January 23, 2023 6:16 PM

That wasn't her thing in the early 70s, r33: she wanted things that showed that she had incredible PIZZAZZ!

Plus she was doing lots of drugs. She loved the night life. She got to boogie on the disco 'round, oh yea.

by Anonymousreply 34January 23, 2023 6:47 PM

[quote] No one I knew owned this album, but I was 21 when it was released. No one my age was paying attention to Liza's attempt at a pop music career.

I bought it and I was 20 in 1989. Her version of "Losing My Mind" was played at all the gay happenings.

by Anonymousreply 35January 23, 2023 7:15 PM

She did, she just didn't have what it took to conquer the pop charts.

That was mind-numbingly bad. She’s too “Broadway” to be pop.

by Anonymousreply 37January 23, 2023 8:18 PM

I find that some of the tracks sound almost unbearably eighties, in a "didn't age well" way. Love PSB to bits, but the dated synths ("shynthsh") can sometimes distract from the excellent song writing.

And then there are tracks that are still fresh, still great, ageing like a fine wine, such as "So Sorry I Said", "Rent", "Tonight is Forever", "I Can't Say Goodnight".. Not a bad score for a 33-year-old album. Again, this is because PSB are just amazing songwriters, and Liza's theatrical vocals worked so very well on this record.

R22 I think you are onto something about Liza having not much of a taste/vision of her own..

by Anonymousreply 38January 23, 2023 8:19 PM

I wish the PSB worked with Diana Ross back then. They could've turned her pop career around, instead of the crap she released in 1987 and 1989. I love Liza's album (bought this when it came out, played it all the time) but can't help wondering what Ross could do with these songs and arrangements.

by Anonymousreply 39January 23, 2023 8:34 PM

The guy beating her is pretty hot

by Anonymousreply 40January 23, 2023 9:54 PM

[quote]They did it with Dusty Springfield on her Reputation album.

And did it just as well. Dusty isn't Liza vocally but the ambience is similarly mesmerizing.

R39 Interesting notion about Miss Ross and PSB. Could've been real interesting.

by Anonymousreply 43January 23, 2023 11:58 PM

Mid-life crishish!

by Anonymousreply 44January 24, 2023 12:01 AM

LIZA WITH A ZEEEEEEE 👄

by Anonymousreply 45January 24, 2023 12:03 AM

She certainly got a lot of attention with that disco cover. She was on all the shows.
