R12 Many years ago at a large, popular gym in West Hollywood known then as Sports Connection, I encountered Jeffrey Jones in the sauna. There we three of us. Jones, a man missing his lower leg, and me - the only black guy (late 20s). Two gym bunnies started to enter and the first one stopped dead in his tracks after looking at us with disgust on his face. He turned around and told his friend, “Ew, there’s a fat guy, a black guy, and a cripple!” We all heard it. They scurried off, probably to cruise the larger steam room.

The amputee’s feelings were hurt and he left. We three had all been talking, so Jeffrey Jones and I continued our conversation which was completely casual. There was nothing sexual or flirty. We talked for 15 or 20 minutes, including what assholes those guys were. What was odd was that during the entire conversation, Jones was pulling on his dick. He was looking me straight in the eye, making small talk and pulling on his dick. I was confused. What was I supposed to do? Acknowledge it? Pull mine? The whole experience was weird.

Back in the 90s I used the NYU sauna at the Coles gym center. This was still when being nude in a sauna was normal. There was always a group of guys nude sitting on their towels socializing and I honestly never saw any sex. It was very relaxing and great. No tension whatsoever. There was a guy there missing a leg. Cut off right above the knee with a naked stump. He was in there often. At first I found it disconcerting. But he was so comfortable with it and always talking with friends that I gradually thought nothing of it. Nice looking guy too.
