Before birth control pills, how did women only have one child?

Or no children at all? I'm thinking of famous women like Zsa Zsa Gabor, Lana Turner, Marlene Dietrich... These women were notoriously sexually active. Did their men always wear a condom?

by Anonymousreply 49January 22, 2023 5:45 PM

Condoms, coat hangers, real abortions, luck, prayer, horse riding accidents, etc.

by Anonymousreply 1January 21, 2023 3:55 PM

Anal sex.

by Anonymousreply 2January 21, 2023 3:57 PM

Midnight hayrides, Rose.

by Anonymousreply 3January 21, 2023 4:01 PM

people were more active back then...

also, how did you think trampolines became so popular?

those poles and wops were always jumping up and down.

IUD's and cervical caps have been around since the early 20th century. Caps were given away free (at least in the UK) by Marie Stopes clinics.

The wealthy have never had a problem obtaining medically supervised Abortions.

Back before the modern age and industrial revolution women also did rely on natural and/or herbal remedies to either prevent fertility or rid themselves of unwanted pregnancies. This website mentions a few commonly used and does warn against them.

But many women did visit "medicine women" or witches/shamans to rid themselves of unwanted pregnancy or to keep them from being fertile (i.e. help make conditions unfavorable for implantation of fetus or to carry it long-term).

I wouldn't recommend it as a reliable method of birth control, but I think pulling out works more often than not.

by Anonymousreply 13January 21, 2023 6:08 PM

They had more babies pulled out of them than a burning orphanage.

by Anonymousreply 14January 21, 2023 6:09 PM

Face it OP, you grandma loved kinky sexy as much as Zsa Zsa and Marlena did...

by Anonymousreply 15January 21, 2023 6:17 PM

Marlene supposedly always douched with vinegar after sex. Her one time lover Douglas Fairbanks Jr said when a vinaigrette salad passed by. That smell. Reminds me of Marlene. Again supposedly, during her affair with Yul Bryner, while he was staring on Broadway in The King and I her vinegar douche failed and she became pregnant and had an abortion. My own problem with this is you can roughly work out her age by the date of a photo. She was born either 1900, 1901, or 1907. Conveniently, her birth certificate and marriage certificate were destroyed in Berlin during the war. So her affair with Yul was in the 50’s (he played the king for 3yrs) she would have been somewhere in her 50’s. Not impossible I know. Just seems odd for the times.

by Anonymousreply 16January 21, 2023 6:25 PM

Their husbands cheated. The wives were happy about it.

How clever of her to start a World War to hide her real age.

Midwives knew how to deliver a baby and they also knew how to kill it. So if you were a very poor immigrant woman and it was impossible to raise another child...

Is that all he did was stare? From all the glowing reviews I’ve heard of his performance, I assumed he sang or danced. Or, hell, at least spoke.

No, R23, in its original run, "The King and I" was just three-hour staring contest between Anna and the king. Audiences grew restless, however, and the book and musical numbers were added later. The costumes were beautiful, though!

I just crushed on r26 so fucking hard!

Heyyy.

For a time, I worked in a Singapore whore house...and I had no children...well, except for the little prince

But once you master the 'Shanghai Squeeze' and the 'Singapore Grip', you don't have to rely on 'birth control' anyway.

Wow, from the responses it sounds like a lot of drama. Constant worry.

My grandma had over a dozen live births, though only 6 made it to adulthood. She lived in such grinding poverty that I doubt she could even afford a midwife for an abortion. She was either pregnant, nursing or getting pregnant again.

So I guess the answer is money. But how many abortions can you have?

by Anonymousreply 36January 21, 2023 9:09 PM

Maybe their husbands had narrow urethras.
