What? She reportedly makes $8MM a year, alone from The View, let alone whatever other business ventures she has. I mean, I'm sure whatever vacation home she bought in Italy is expensive, but what has this woman been doing with her money?
Whoopi had to borrow money from a friend to buy her house?

She supports her daughter , grand daughter and great grand kids. That's why she ain't got no money.

You’d be surprised how many actors borrow money from each other. It usually comes out in lawsuits and etc.
Someone came out and said Robert Downey paid for their rehab. I remember last year Missy Elliott helped Lil’ Kim save her house, someone gave Anne Heche money before she died and wants it back now that she’s dead.
It’s common.

R2 - sure, but Lil' Kim and Ann Heche getting loans make sense. Neither of them had highly lucrative later careers. But, Whoopi's been making bank for years. Perhaps r1 is right, maybe she's been bankrolling the lives of extended family, but it still seems nuts to me.

How rich is Whoopi Goldberg? Making an estimated $8million a year, Whoopi has amassed a fortune of $60million.
Her annual salary for The View alone is often estimated to be in the $5million to $6million range, while others say it's $8million.
The rest of her net worth comes from a multitude of projects, including blockbuster hits like Ghost and The Color Purple, and her book ventures.

A lot of celebrities and rich folks have a lot of money in accounts or assets that aren't necessarily liquid. Yes, they could get loans, but then their business would be out in the papers. As it is, websites like Dirt will post the most minute details of many real estate transactions involving celebrities.
So maybe she needed to bypass a loan, who knows.

When Whoopi and Monique feuded, Monique said that Whoopi told her how much she (W) made from The View. Monique said she felt sorry for Whoopi (typical passive-aggressive Monique).
Whoopi's bad with money and she probably is supporting the two generations below her. She brought some of her daughter's merchandise (apparel) on The View and it wasn't very impressive.
Whoopi obviously hates her job on The View and is obviously just there for the paycheck and free food.
Point is: she should have enough $ by now to not be doing things she hates.

She seems the type to make rash decisions. Why would you buy a vacation home in Italy at this age?
I would just rent cool high-end villas and experience different places. Buying a vacation home traps you in a lot of ways - the added expense, the feeling to go to the same place on vacation over and over, the upkeep, the worry of what happens when you're not there.
I'd rather sit on that money and rent a few weeks a year. I resented having to go to my mom's vacation home during my vacations.

R7 Yes! I never understand why people buy vacation homes. Much better to rent and get to go to different places as well as not have to worry about it when I am not there.

What the fuck is up with the multiple posters above me justifying her need to borrow money because she supports family, yet she’s making an estimated $5-8 million a year?! Fuck these entitled relatives. That much money should bankroll all of them and then some.

Celebrity Net Worth says she is worth $60 million and earns $12 million per year.
I wonder where they get that number from?

Supporting leeches (her disabled daughter excepted) is why Bette Davis hardly ever turned down work and died with less than a million dollars in the bank.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 20, 2023 6:07 AM |
She could support all of these people easily. It’s just the lifestyle she thinks they all need to have.

Not only that, but they all live in the same house - with all the spouses
So think about it - she has to feed multiple families under one roof, and she is giving them all an allowance as well

[R8] It's called an 'investment'. If she enjoys going to Italy, and she enjoys spending time out there, why rent for weeks or months when you can buy and it becomes an investment which will pay off later for yourself or for your heirs ? By renting, you get nothing in return despite the money you've poured into it over the years.
As for 'borrowing from a friend', there's a million reasons why she did that. As mentioned above, she may not have wanted a paper trail through a financial institution which could go public, or has her money tied up in investments. Doesn't matter where she got the loan from, so long as she pays it back.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 20, 2023 3:53 PM |
Making a real estate "investment" in Italy is fine - if you have enough money to invest in it.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 20, 2023 6:21 PM |
r20, that actually seems a cheap way of supporting them, rather than them all having their own places.

There's a new saying going around:
If you raise your kids, you can spoil your grandchildren. If you spoil your kids, then you raise your grandchildren.
Maybe that's what happened to Whoopi.
Hell, no, I would not want all of that extended family living with me. I see nothing wrong with helping with a large down payment on a house in an upper-middle class community. This is ridiculous to be "Big Poppa" or "Big Whoopi" ruling the roost in one house, if that is what is actually going on.
Also, you know she's a bitch to everybody in the household. She can't even keep it under control on The View. She's miserable.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 20, 2023 7:37 PM |
Whoopi said she borrowed the money on New Year's Day from Lisa Marie Presley - so now she doesn't have to pay it back.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 20, 2023 7:47 PM |
R21 I would prefer to invest the capital in the stock market such as an index tracker fund. Would that make more profit than what I would pay in rent, management, repairs and other fees? Property is higher risk than an index tracker fund.

Personally, I wouldn't borrow money from a friend, but maybe the friend was offering better rates than the banks. Or maybe it was a no interest loan.
