Breaking News: NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Aderns resigns

To step down by 7th February 2023. This is an election year guess she didn’t want to try and go for another 3 years so wanted to step down to give someone else the chance to step up and enough time to run a campaign.

[quote] Translation- she was going to get clobbered in reelection bid and is saving her face

Ms Ardern faced unrelenting criticism for implementing some of the harshest Covid restriction in the world including lockdowns where 𝑁𝑒𝑤 𝑍𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑𝑛'𝑡 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑏𝑢𝑦 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑡𝑤𝑜-𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒.

But she denied the constant attacks, which continued last year as the economy faltered and cost of living rose, played a role in her decision.

Surprised the tinpot dictator isn't trying to fight it through

by Anonymousreply 9January 19, 2023 1:27 AM

How, r7? By implementing stringent safety measures to keep Covid the fuck away from New Zealanders as much as humanly possible.

You're one of those retarded MAGATs, right?

by Anonymousreply 28January 19, 2023 5:20 AM

Why is everyone assuming her poll numbers are tumbling because of her covid response? Aside from a few conspiratards, no-one here gives a shit about that anymore. That's old news.

What we care about is the lack of talent in her cabinet, the fumbling incompetence in policy, the poor decisions, the increasing costs of living, the supermarket monopolies that should've been broken up, the wage freezes for front-line workers during a cost of living crisis, bringing in record amounts of immigration during a housing/infrastructure crisis, putting through policy with hidden amendments/agendas, the seeming hold the Maori Labour caucus has over the Labour Party (giving unelected Maori tribes power over NZ's water supply), just general lack of ideas when they held a majority and could've done anything.

Now, a lot of this is decades worth of failures from governments on both sides. However, instead of at least trying to steer the Titanic to another course, Jacinda elected to get the crew to hold candles over the side in the hope that the iceberg melts. After next election we'll have a ruling party that gleefully harpoons whales and throws shit (and the working class) over the side.

I voted Labour, and what a waste of time. The main failure is that so much could've been achieved, as she had such popularity.

by Anonymousreply 29January 19, 2023 7:21 AM

Oz here R29. We were very shocked today as we like her a lot. (Except for the Murdoch nasties of course).

We especially loved how she hated Morrison! But then, who didn't...

My friend is a journalist who interviews them all. She said Kiri is an idiot, though not as stupid as Marama Davidson who has a room temperature IQ. Seriously dumb.

She also said (just as an aside) Judith Collins had a surprisingly good sense of humour (and she loathes the National Party).

r30, Jacinda is/seems like a lovely empathetic person. But imagine a kind aunt who suddenly won the lottery and starts giving her money away to anyone with a sob story and their hand out. Very very naive. Incapable of making any hard calls or fundamental and necessary changes to things like tax structure, housing taxes, or breaking the ever-present monopolies that rule this country.

I think that's one of the problems with champagne socialists with no life experience. They've never dealt with actual real life proper dodgy cunts. Chloe Swarbrick is another one. Straight from private school to university to internship/business that was bought for her.

Matt-fatso wants NZ, which has had 2,500 covid deaths, to be more like America, which has has 1,110,000 covid deaths. So our death rate (adjusted for inflation) has been SEVEN TIMES HIGHER than NZ’s.

But all Matt-fatso is capable of grasping is Fox News lies, so he sees her as bad.

She has been on the show a few times, hence people saw how likable she was.

Fuck off, R25.

by Anonymousreply 48January 19, 2023 4:39 PM

It's a very millennial thing, I think. She's not that interested in the power. She wants to have a simpler life. She's probably set financially. She wants to take a break. She's been there and done that. Move on.

I've friends in NZ how like her a lot, but then they always vote Labour.

by Anonymousreply 49January 19, 2023 4:50 PM

So this has effectively handed the opposition party the keys to the kingdom come election time in October. Sad thing is, the party leader is an evangelical Christian with some odd conservative ideas.

Someone above mentioned Kiri Allen. I had thought she’d make a fine choice as leader some day but maybe for now would make a good deputy.

Jacinda’s replacement will likely be Chris Hipkins as he still has a lot of remaining good will from the public and is very talented. Stuart Nash is also a contender and he’s a bit of a daddy.

How R67?

by Anonymousreply 68January 20, 2023 10:16 AM

People may not realize this but that is actually very rare in politics. People rarely want to step down when they have power and typically have to be made to. It reads to me that Ardern is one of the good ones. It's mostly the wrong people who want power.

by Anonymousreply 69January 20, 2023 10:22 AM

It reads that her party is going to lose the forthcoming elections, r69. You can bet she wouldn't have stood down if Labour were doing well in the polls. Forcing her party to pick a new leader at this particular moment, who will not have had the chance to develop a policy platform and so will go into the elections with outdated policies that don't reflect the new leadership, reads as rather selfish to me.

The overwhelming majority of New Zealanders are very happy with the way the New Zealand government handled the pandemic. They looked at what was going on in the USA and decided they didn't want that.

We were lucky to have her, and she leaves at the right time. I appreciate the Maori voice that is currently in our politics, and in making that statement I expect vitriolic replies. Such replies are made by a vocal minority. That statement will incense them further. The majority of people here (NZ) are not idiots. They knew inflation would follow the flood of money into the economy as part of the response to covid. They know this will take time and some hardship to correct. They are aware of how growing economic inequality has reduced their circumstances, and will be looking for policies that tackle this. Whoever presents these policies will most likely win the upcoming election. Those above that complian strike me as the types that can never be told what to do. How dare any government actually govern if they do not first please them! They need not be wealthy, but they will have an over-inflated notion of their own abilities. There, I said it.

R98, the media started out with the belief the Andrews Government would be swept from office, but the longer the campaign went on the more the polls turned in their favour. In the end most of the polls were correct about the size of Labor's primary vote, though its distribution was also an important factor in their losing hardly any seats.

by Anonymousreply 103January 22, 2023 1:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 119May 9, 2023 10:44 PM

R29 and R34 are pretty much spot on. Labour's initial handling of covid was excellent, but they overreached themselves later on, and their initial handling of the covid crisis obscured the fact that they had and still have very few competent people with real world experience and too many idealogues.

As a result she was quite widely disliked here, although I personally didnt bear her any ill will just thought she was out of her depth. R105 is also largely correct about this government's extremely lacklustre response to the serious crime and gang issues we are now experiencing,

That said the opposition are little better. R74 the National Party doesnt mean race purity and neofascism, but just a slightly different flavour of mediocrity, incompetence and stupidity, but maybe just a teensy little bit less of it

I dont know who to vote for, none of the options are appealing at the moment. Shits fucked
