He always looks so unhappy.

by Anonymousreply 1January 18, 2023 10:24 PM

Wtf a woman died on Mt Baldy last week:

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. - A mother of four known to friends and family as the "dancing hiking queen" who frequently went on "fearless hikes" was killed after sliding on ice and falling to her death on Mt. Baldy last weekend.

Family identified Crystal Paula Gonzalez-Landas as the hiker who died Jan. 8 in a "tragic accident," the second such falling death to have occurred on Mt. Baldy in the last two weeks.

Crews believe Gonzalez-Landas slid 500 to 700 feet down Baldy Bowl amid icy conditions after she was located on a steep and icy hillside. Several other hikers had rushed to her aid.

She was transported via helicopter to a hospital where she died from her injuries.

by Anonymousreply 17January 18, 2023 11:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 18January 18, 2023 11:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 19January 18, 2023 11:13 PM

I pray they find the hikers alive and well.

by Anonymousreply 21January 18, 2023 11:15 PM

Officials are also on a separate search to find hiker Bob Gregory in Los Angeles County.

His family reported him missing Monday, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s San Dimas station, per ABC 7, said it has been searching for him in the Crystal Lake area of the San Gabriel Mountains.

by Anonymousreply 49January 19, 2023 2:39 AM

If he was hiking on Mt. Baldy and has been gone for 5 days, this is not likely to end well. Those mountains are steep and rocky, that terrain doesn't fuck around at any time of year year, and right now there will be deep snow on much of the mountain. The poor man has been missing for 5 days, 5 days in which there's been serious weather, and if he was injured then death from hypothermia is possible, as is having his location obscured by snow as well as scrubby, rocky, semi-desert terrain.

Remember last year, when a super-fit hiker went missing in a small hill park in Pleasanton, Ca., and it took months to find the body in rocky canyon that was off the trail? Yeah. This is likely to be the same, only worse, because the area in question is larger, and more formidable.

by Anonymousreply 50January 19, 2023 2:45 AM

I remember him from all the way back in Oxford Blues. He had an interesting young beauty, and he aged well - at least in that hiking pic. That's terrible that he's missing.

by Anonymousreply 51January 19, 2023 3:09 AM

None of the news stories say what part of Mt. Baldy he was hiking in. With all the recent snow, he must have been at a lower elevation since there would be many skiers on the upper slopes. I’ve hiked and skied on Mt. Baldy many times. Much of the mountain is treacherously steep, even its lower elevations. I can’t imagine why an experienced hiker as he’s said to be would hike alone in this area, or anywhere. I hope Sands is found alive, but that’s unlikely after several days in freezing temperatures.

by Anonymousreply 52January 19, 2023 3:29 AM

I still say it was killer spiders.

by Anonymousreply 53January 19, 2023 3:36 AM

R52, someone said he was around the Crystal Lake area, which is under Mt. Hawkins, maybe 10 miles from Mt. Baldy as the crow flies (probably 50 by ground). The lake itself is at 5,500 feet and a quick look at google maps shows that the terrain is high and steep, Sands could have climbed up into altitudes with serious snow if he'd wanted to.

But of course, in terrain that's high, steep, rocky, deserted, and experiencing winter storms, there are plenty of things that can kill a lone hiker other than snow.

by Anonymousreply 54January 19, 2023 4:55 AM

his bladder was eaten by coyotes.

but it could be he's doing another disappearing act. . . allegedly, he's "disappeared" before and just went off-grid...

abandoning a car is typical in those kind of cases, too. Always somewhere remote... be it a reststop, airport, walmart three towns away...

They seem more concerned now because he allegedly was depressed recently and quite ill. If one wanted to speculate. . . possible early onset dementia if they couldn't prevent him from going cruising?

by Anonymousreply 68January 19, 2023 12:33 PM

He was absolutely stunning in A Room With A View, a movie that was a major gay awakening for generations of gay men. It didn’t matter if he could act or not and that he seems almost autistic in it, the weirdness just added to his radiance. He aged like milk though. I was shocked to see how badly he’d aged just a few years later in Warlock, and his sort of autistic weirdness had suddenly allocated him to villain roles rather than leading romantic males. He did manage to eke out a sort of weird d list career, with occasional forays into the b list.

This is sad.

by Anonymousreply 69January 19, 2023 12:33 PM

I really liked Warlock and I liked him in it, even if he seemed irritable about being cast in such a B-list flick.

by Anonymousreply 70January 19, 2023 12:35 PM

Typical behaviour.

by Anonymousreply 71January 19, 2023 12:45 PM

Is it too soon to ask for his stuff?

by Anonymousreply 72January 19, 2023 1:23 PM

Why are so many DLers suddenly obsessed with Autism? Is Autism the new Yellow Skin??

Anyway, he's most likely dead, and what an awful way to go.

by Anonymousreply 73January 19, 2023 2:16 PM

He died doing what he loved r73. Honestly he probably would have picked dying on a hike as his way to go out.

by Anonymousreply 74January 19, 2023 2:47 PM

It does sound nice, except for the possible excruciating pain of broken limbs -- that's what I was thinking of. Hypothermia is supposed to be peaceful, though.

by Anonymousreply 75January 19, 2023 3:24 PM

Sands’ car has been found and apparently he was hiking in the Baldy Bowl area. I’ve done that hike many times, but not at a time of bad weather. Although the Baldy Bowl trail is a popular hike, it’s also moderately difficult, with quite a rise in elevation. Much of the trail is narrow, with sharp drops on either side. In ordinary snow conditions, it would be risky. However, wind-blown rain has recently caused much of the snow to turn to ice, which makes the hike even more difficult. It may be a bit far-fetched, but among the wildlife in the area there are mountain lions. Sands could have been attacked by a lion.

by Anonymousreply 76January 19, 2023 3:29 PM

R76 I've also hiked that trail... alone. But in summer. Given the weather conditions (at the time he left and what the forecasts promised) it's pretty odd he went off by himself, although he's hiked high elevation in the snow in the past. We may never know the story.

by Anonymousreply 77January 19, 2023 3:31 PM

Maybe he decided he was ready to die. Stranger things have happened.

by Anonymousreply 82January 19, 2023 3:44 PM

R77 why do you hike alone? You should at least have a buddy you can check in with along the way. I’ve been in two situations where experienced hikers in my group suffered gruesome injuries. One had to be airlifted and the other had to be driven out by an EMS atv. They only survived because they were part of a group. The hike leader called 911 with coordinates, one member of our group was an EMT and was able to help. I would not even do an easy hike solo.

R83 Of course, the conventional wisdom is exactly what you put forward. There is great benefit, though, to be all alone in the wild. No need to do anything other than see what's in front of you. It's "purifying" to me to be alone like that. Having said that, I will hike day hikes alone, usually where there are other hikers - not too remote. Overnight or multiple night hikes I'll go with my partner.

Baldy trail, though not easy, is usually hiked by other hikers - just not in bad weather. He's an experienced hiker - he probably thought it wasn't that hard. Ice, however, is really, really hard... even with crampons.

As a teenager in the 80s i thank him and his very hot ass for many well moment well spent. I must have worn out the bathing scene in A Room with a View. That he was so inarticulate only made him hotter.

That said, i did never find him particularly charismatic as an actor.

by Anonymousreply 104January 19, 2023 5:53 PM

r104 There are a few end of life tour packages.. more for the corpses, though... where they set the body on hunting platform in the woods, so the birds can pick it clean and inevitably let it come crashing down to the wildlife below. . .

the closest American equivalent is donating to one of the federal crime training programs.

Still, more swampy lands in the south would have been the better... people routinely go missing between the gators, boars and catfish.

by Anonymousreply 105January 19, 2023 5:57 PM

With his sexy body and dazzling blondness, he could have been a perfect animalistic Gerald in Lawrence’s ‘Women in Love.’

As it was he was a magnetic feline presence in “A Room With a View.” He was like a big, beautiful wildcat on the prowl for sex, the symbol of healthy, masculine sexual aggression. In the scene where he and Helena Bonham Carter are both lying on the grass and he tries to seduce her by his proximity alone, you could feel his cold fire. And then there was that ass.

He seemed to shy away from the gay icon thing (pulled out of “Maurice”) and he was never as effective in a movie again. But one film is enough to make a guy immortal and he has earned his place in the erotic movie pantheon.

by Anonymousreply 106January 19, 2023 6:12 PM

His hottest days were long ago. It's for the best.

by Anonymousreply 107January 19, 2023 6:31 PM

Here's a picture of the Baldy Bowl trail, which is steep and rocky at every point. He could have slipped and fallen off the trail at almost any point, or been pushed off by falling water or rocks, and the body would be so hard to find in that rocky, scrubby terrain that the searchers might as well wait for a thaw and look for a kettle of vultures.

But look at the top of the trail, where it approaches the summit, along a ridge above a huge bowl of cliffs and old rockslides... and remember that the storm winds came in from the west. To me it looks like a strong enough wind could have picked up a hiker and blown him over the edge into the rocky basin, where he'd never be found.

by Anonymousreply 108January 19, 2023 6:34 PM

There is no reason to be hiking up there in winter and storm conditions. Folly. Nobody says he was heading that way, either. If he's an experienced hiker he would have known that.

[quote] A Room With A View … autistic weirdness...

[quote] That he was so inarticulate only made him hotter.

Julian Sands did tend to grimace when articulating his words.

George Emerson and his father were presented as 'weird' as a contrast to the excessively bourgeois Cecil and the Honeychurch families.

George's father made a quote from American transcendentalist writer Henry David Thoreau. The nude swim is a implied reference to Thoreau's Walden Pond.

The son of Julian Sands has joined the desperate search for his father - who disappeared six days ago while hiking in 'extremely dangerous' California mountains.

The 65-year-old actor, who starred in A Room With A View, has not been seen since attempting to climb Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel Mountains - one of the most popular trails in Los Angeles.

Sands was reported missing by his family at around 7.30pm on Friday amid warnings of 'extremely dangerous' conditions for hiking.

His son Henry, who is also an experienced hiker, flew out from London on Tuesday to assist with the search.

He is understood to have retraced the route his father took.

However, the 37-year-old, who owns a communications business, was forced to abandon his efforts due to the hostile weather.

It comes after a ground search was attempted on Saturday, but also had to be abandoned due to a storm. It has not been safe to send rescue teams back out since.

Drones and helicopters have been deployed to the mountain range, which is 40 miles from Los Angeles, where the actor has lived in Beverly Hills since 2020.

Rescuers last night recovered a snow-covered car thought to belong to Sands, which was towed away from the area.

It is not known if the actor would have taken a tent, but a source close to the family said he would have been ‘well equipped’ for a day’s hike.

A source close to the family said: ‘Henry is taking a very practical approach in organising everything and getting involved.

‘I think it was just instinct for him to fly out when he heard his father was missing.’

Meanwhile, it is not the first time the keen outdoorsman has come into trouble while hiking, having had a brush with death on the Andes in the early 1990s.

Many in the TV and film industry have been praying for the star's safe return.

Actor Samuel West, who starred with Sands in 2004's Sword of Xanten, tweeted this morning: 'Please, please let Julian Sands be OK. A friend and an inspiration. Awful news.'

Actor Jim Piddock called Sands a 'wonderfully talented and unique man and a delightful, generous friend' and said he is 'hoping for a miracle'.

Mr. Sands said that people who don’t climb mountains assume it’s about a “great heroic sprint” to the summit and an ego.

“But actually, it’s the reverse,” he said. “It’s about supplication and sacrifice and humility, when you go to these mountains. It’s not so much a celebration of oneself, but the eradication of one’s self consciousness. And so on these walks you lose yourself, you become a vessel of energy in harmony, hopefully with your environment.”

by Anonymousreply 148January 20, 2023 12:06 AM

He was the pretty much the original Jude Law.

by Anonymousreply 149January 20, 2023 12:08 AM

His disappearance follows weeks of devastating weather across California.

A stream of atmospheric rivers, storms that are narrow in shape and carry a tremendous amount of water, have slammed much of California in recent weeks, causing flooding, power outages and widespread evacuations. At least 19 people have died.

On Friday, when Mr. Sands was reported missing, another round of storms was just beginning to sweep across Southern California, lasting through the holiday weekend.

By Wednesday, conditions had not improved and the sheriff’s office urged hikers to “think twice and heed warnings,” adding that rescue teams had responded to 14 rescue missions on Mount Baldy and the surrounding area in the last four weeks.

The rescue missions were for lost, stranded and injured hikers, two of whom did not survive after falling and injuring themselves, officials said. The recent storms brought snow and ice to the mountain, and conditions were not favorable for hikers, even those with experience, the authorities added.

I just found out his birthday is the same as mine - January 4th - so pretty recently. Getting older and birthdays sometimes take their toll. I hope that's not the case; I would think he wouldn't want to put anyone else in harm's way (including family) trying to find him. I'm going to lean toward poor decisions (despite the warning of bad weather and all the previous rescues that had been made on Baldy already) and unfortunate accident.

R160, r162 I don’t think this was suicide. If that had been his plan, he wouldn’t have told his wife where he was going to hike. Apparently he did, and she called the sheriff’s office when he didn’t return Friday evening. I’ve read that he has hiked that trail before, so he presumably knew its hazards. Also, weather reports were very clear that a second storm was due that weekend. He probably thought he could complete his hike before the worst of the storm hit, but had some sort of accident. Based on his cellphone pings, he may have been in the area between Baldy Saddle and the summit. That’s the most dangerous art of the trail. If he fell from that part of the trail, finding and retrieving his body would be difficult. That’s the area where the woman hiker died last week. I’ve gone on strenuous hikes for 50 years, but I never tempt fate by hiking in bad weather. If it’s snowing, I’ll go skiing, but never hiking.

Two people have died in recent days while while attempting to scale the same mountainous area - one of the most popular trails in Los Angeles.

Crystal Paula Gonzalez, a mother-of-four described as 'the dancing hiking queen', is understood to have slipped and plunged 700ft down the Baldy Bowl.

A helicopter was immediately dispatched, and soon found Gonzalez 'down on a steep and icy hillside, surrounded by numerous helpful hikers assisting in any way they could,' according to an incident report.

On December 28, Jarret Choi, 43, from LA, was hiking the Ice House Canyon trail when he fell near the Ice House Saddle ridge line.

He was found two days later, after a search hampered by extreme weather conditions.

And on December 17, four people had to be rescued by helicopter from the mountain after icy conditions made it impossible to move.

Authorities say there is still “no hard deadline” for calling off the search for Julian Sands, one week after the British actor was first reported missing in the southern Californian mountains.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the incident was still being classified as a search and rescue operation, though snow, sleet and fog continued to hinder operations on foot.

As of Thursday evening visibility at high altitudes in the Mount Baldy area remained poor, with searches planned to continue when conditions permitted.

“We will schedule another ground search when the weather improves, and it is safe for our ground crews,” a spokesperson from the department told the PA news agency.

R90 Sad to read about this woman who died while hiking. Now her family has set up a GFM to pay for her funeral, which asks the question...

If you are the mother of four children, yet a 'fearless hiker' (which tells us she enjoyed hiking in the most dangerous situations) wouldn't you at least invest in life insurance to cover funeral costs for your loved ones if something happens to you (like this) as you are fearlessly hiking ?

by Anonymousreply 199January 20, 2023 7:05 PM

There are many people who have a life insurance policy but their family still starts a GoFundMe.

Frankly it's what people do now if they have a story that makes the news, they want to monetize that exposure.

by Anonymousreply 200January 20, 2023 7:26 PM

R200 Every time you log on to DL, you are monetizing something. The world we live in now has nothing but monetized potentials. The digital life has carved out an empty space in what used to be our hearts: inviting dollars to replace them.

by Anonymousreply 201January 20, 2023 7:32 PM

Fleeing 'thinking about civilization's logic' doesn't necessarily mean being irresponsible to your offspring. I'm sure she followed civilization's logic when it came to giving them shelter, giving them food, sending them off to school or being home educated, seeking medical attention and doctor visits, etc. Investing in life insurance while you are fearlessly hiking to take care of your offspring and funeral expenses, should be one of the top priorities.

His wife, Evgenia, comes from one of the more interesting aristocratic families in Britain. Her mother Caroline was a stellar author, short-listed for the Booker Prize in the 70s. She was daughter of the Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, her only brother was the final holder of that title as he died childless and with no male relatives to inherit.

Evgenia's uncle, the last Marquess, was married to socialite Lindy Guinness. Her mom's second husband - her stepfather - was the American poet Robert Lowell. Her maternal grandmother was also a Guinness, who was close cousin to Tara Browne (of the Beatles "A Day in the Life" fame), and the current Duchess of Wellington. She was more distant cousins with the Channons; Marina Guinness; the model Jasmine Guinness; Diana Mitford (by marriage); Daphne Guinness and her Niarchos offspring; and current-day socialite Lady Mary Charteris and her Hesketh half-siblings.

by Anonymousreply 207January 20, 2023 8:23 PM

R199 Because she was reckless and self-centered, no matter her "radiant" and "helpful" reputation. It's possible to be both. I have spent a lot of time in Zermatt which is a climbing centre and many many climbers have a reckless gene, not matter how careful and technical they are about the "sport". In the meta sense, they have chosen to pursue a VERY dangerous "sport" or "hobby". They screw over their loved ones. Its fucked up and dark when they screw over their kids. They can be blindingly handsome and seem sunny but there is a dark sliver of self-destruction in all of them.

by Anonymousreply 250January 21, 2023 1:40 AM

While I can understand the sense of adventure one gets when hiking alone, I wouldn't do it even if I were an experienced athlete. If you want to hike on your own go to a local park, not to Mount Baldy. Only go to the more challenging locations if you have a route planned and are with at least one partner.

by Anonymousreply 251January 21, 2023 1:40 AM

I have always believed that trampers and climbers should pay for insurance if they get fucked up or lost, or have to pay for the rescue. I had a friend who was in the U.S., feel down a ravine and broke his leg. he had to pay for the helicopter out, and hospital bills, and was a fuck load.

by Anonymousreply 252January 21, 2023 1:43 AM

There are a few states that require "negligent" hikers/climbers to reimburse for some expenses. But they usually don't come after those who don't pay.

"I have always believed that trampers and climbers should pay for insurance if they get fucked up or lost, or have to pay for the rescue. "

At one point the state of Maine shut down rescue services for lost Appalachian Trail hikers, the trail is extremely rough and dangerous, and it was just costing too damn much money to rescue people from their own foolishness. So they told the hikers "ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK, IF YOU RUN INTO TROUBLE NOBODY WILL HELP YOU EXCEPT YOUR FELLOW HIKERS".

by Anonymousreply 269January 21, 2023 5:05 AM

He was a lifelong hiker and so knew the dangers of hiking alone, in poor weather, and on that particular mountain. It was a risk he was willing to take. Maybe it sucks for his family, but his kids were grown and he did what he wanted. If he has died, I hope they don't find his body (again, sorry family). What a great final resting place for a mountain guy.

[quote] RECCO reflectors

by Anonymousreply 302January 22, 2023 2:25 AM

If you are caught in an avalanche situation the mountain rescue team will search the avalanche area with a Recco Detector, this detector responds to frequency signals of the reflector which should be mounted on your Helmet, Backpack or as a Belt.

by Anonymousreply 303January 22, 2023 2:27 AM

nowadays the reflector isn't "mounted" its just thingy sewn into most mountaineering and ski clothing of any quality.

by Anonymousreply 304January 22, 2023 2:29 AM

How many people in the U.S. are immigrants? The U.S. foreign-born population reached a record 44.8 million in 2018. Since 1965, when U.S. immigration laws replaced a national quota system, the number of immigrants living in the U.S. has more than quadrupled. Immigrants today account for 13.7% of the U.S. population, nearly triple the share (4.8%) in 1970.

"Freezing to death is actually the best way to go.

Towards the end, you don’t feel the cold, the shivering stops and you drift off to sleep, never to awaken."

But that's towards the end. There's the considerable lead up of pure agony and pain, fear and panic. There's better, quicker ways to die.

by Anonymousreply 407January 22, 2023 11:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 413January 23, 2023 12:08 AM

Are there bears on that mountain?

by Anonymousreply 414January 23, 2023 12:09 AM

There is a lot of wildlife in the habitats of Mt Baldy’s mountain regions, such as black bears, coyotes, mountain lions, raccoons, big horn sheep, mule deer, bobcats, gray foxes, California Mountain Kingsnake, Western Diamondback rattlesnake, Cooper’s Hawk and much more.

by Anonymousreply 415January 23, 2023 12:11 AM

R414 Idk about bears but I believe there are mountain lions.

by Anonymousreply 416January 23, 2023 12:12 AM

black bears?

by Anonymousreply 417January 23, 2023 12:13 AM

What animals live in Mt. Baldy? Until winter cloaks the area in snow, elk and deer are commonly seen. Beavers, mountain lions, coyotes, bobcats, and black bears live here with a variety of smaller mammals.

by Anonymousreply 418January 23, 2023 12:13 AM

r399, he lives in California, he pays American taxes

by Anonymousreply 419January 23, 2023 12:17 AM

Bears are there, 100%. As well as all of the other animals named. However, the chances of him running into rattlers was probably slim to none unless it was right at the beginning of his hike. They don't come out in cold weather; although they do sun themselves (usually on or near to rocks) when it is sunny.

His arms and legs were tough and stringy but his ass was delicious.

by Anonymousreply 421January 23, 2023 12:21 AM

I believe rattlesnake venom is at the lower end of the toxicity scale. Which is why it’s kind of a cheat for snake handlers to choose that type to pass in church.

You could die from a rattlesnake bite, but it’s unlikely.

by Anonymousreply 422January 23, 2023 12:23 AM

It's likely if you don't get antivenin and get a fair amount of venom via the bite, although how much venom is injected is a crapshoot...sometimes it's a lot, sometimes very little.

by Anonymousreply 433January 23, 2023 2:18 AM

by Anonymousreply 434January 23, 2023 2:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 437January 23, 2023 3:00 AM

Spalding Gray was declared missing in 2004.

The night before his disappearance, he had taken his children to see Tim Burton's film Big Fish. It ends with the line, "A man tells a story over and over so many times he becomes the story.

In that way, he is immortal." Gray's widow, Kathie Russo, said after he disappeared, "You know, Spalding cried after he saw that movie. I just think it gave him permission. I think it gave him permission to die."

by Anonymousreply 438January 23, 2023 3:06 AM

I researched the hike up Mt Baldy and the part before the summit called Devil's Backbone is narrow with long, steep drops on each side. If it was icy, uh-oh.

by Anonymousreply 439January 23, 2023 3:25 AM

R438 Wasn't Spalding also manic depressive with many drug issues?

by Anonymousreply 440January 23, 2023 3:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 441January 23, 2023 3:39 AM

R440 - In 2001, Spaulding Gray was in a serious car accident which resulted in frontal lobe damage to his brain as well as severe damage to his sciatic nerve. That brain damage, plus the emotional and physical pain that he suffered was likely directly related to his eventual suicide. (I believe his mother had also committed suicide, and he has been haunted by this all his life)

Julian Sands told the Guardian in 2020 that he is happiest when he's “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning.”

by Anonymousreply 451January 23, 2023 4:48 AM

I know everyone wants drama, but mountains are positively littered with the bodies of people who were absolutely sure they could make it despite predicted bad weather or adverse conditions, and I would imagine Julian was far more likely to be overconfident than suicidal. He wouldn't have told anyone where he was going if he was suicidal, for one.

by Anonymousreply 454January 23, 2023 4:54 AM

I read the quote about being happiest when he's “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning.” at the beginning of this thread, and that's that. No use going on about foolishness and horrible deaths. He knew it was a risk and didn't mind, or it was suicide by cold mountain. Quite a death for a man of his interests. He might've told his family where he was going, so they would know in general what happened, or he decided to off himself while up there.

(Maybe it's the remnant of my 80s crush that makes me want him have a noble death.)

by Anonymousreply 455January 23, 2023 4:59 AM

by Anonymousreply 458January 23, 2023 5:22 AM

so what's the latest? he's dead?

by Anonymousreply 459January 23, 2023 5:26 AM

"I don't know why they call it "paradoxical undressing" as they know full well why it happens."

I think because it's paradoxical to the average person who doesn't know the science and associate cold with people wanting to put on more clothes. Paradoxical to "civilians," not scientists or medical professionals.

"He probably died days ago and his corpse has been eaten by now."

If his corpse has been covered by snow, the scavengers may not find him until a thaw. So like I said earlier, there may be nothing to do here but wait for spring and look for kettles of vultures.

The odds are that they'll never find the body. They won't find it with helicopters and drones if it's covered in snow, and they won't find it after the snow melts as any brightly colored clothing will get discolored, scavengers will take everything but the bones, and the disarticulated bones will look like dead twigs from a distance, and there's no part of California that doesn't have dead twigs on the ground. If you die out there, as Sands undoubtedly has, it's unlikely that you'll ever be found.

No, they look like rocks. Plenty of those in California, too, and the vertebrae would look like pebbles or gravel from a distance, if partly covered with dirt.

No, I doubt the searchers will find him, and frankly, it doesn't sound like they expect to. Maybe some hikers will stumble across the body someday, but it's more likely that he'll never be found. He probably fell from the trail, and it's all steep country. Someone who fell at any point of the trail might fall a long way or fall someplace he's covered by brush or rocks, out of sight of the trail, and it sure doesn't look like the sort of area where hikers go off trail very much. And if he fell into that avalanche zone up in the upper left, he'll never be found.

The family of Julian Sands has said that they are "deeply touched" by the support they have received as the search for the British actor continues.

In a statement, Julian's family praised the "heroic" efforts of the Californian authorities who have been tirelessly tracing the actor.

“Our heartfelt thanks to the compassionate members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who are coordinating the search for our beloved Julian, not least the heroic search teams listed below who are braving difficult conditions on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home,” the statement read.

“We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support.”

The statement went on to list various organisations involved in the search, which included local and out-of-county forces, as well as specialised canine and cave teams.

In a message sharing the statement, the sheriff’s department added: “As we enter day 11 of the search for Julian Sands on Mt. Baldy, we are reminded of the sheer determination & selflessness of all of the people who have aided in this search.

“We will continue to utilize the resources available to us.”

by Anonymousreply 527January 23, 2023 11:05 PM

Will they actually call off the search at some point is what I wonder. They searched for 3 months for that experienced trail runner in Pleasanton before they finally found them, and I believe it was someone who was in an organized, yet unofficial, search effort (a public posse, if you will). That wasn't in steep or snowy terrain at all, so surely the costs were much less expensive than what is probably being incurred in searching for Mr. Sands. I wonder if his family at some point will issue a "we've made our peace with it" type of statement.

I feel sad for them, and for him if this ended up being an accidental death by misfortune.

by Anonymousreply 528January 23, 2023 11:17 PM

I don't understand this concern over costs. My brother is a firefighter and he gets paid whether he fights a fire or just sits in the station playing cards. And he doesn't get a bonus if the fire is a media spectacle.

by Anonymousreply 529January 23, 2023 11:22 PM

R524 I’ve hiked that trail many times and almost felt like I recognized a number of the boulders in the video. What the video doesn’t adequately convey is the steepness of the terrain on either side of the trail and the depth of the drop. I’m not particularly afraid of heights, but that part of the trail requires extreme attention and caution. I will only hike risky areas when it’s dry, never when there’s frost or snow on the trail. I just can’t imagine a lone hiker making this trek.

I think the best that we can hope for is that Julian Sands fell, hit his head, and died instantly. It’s awful to think of him lying injured and unable to help himself in the extreme cold of Mt. Baldy.

by Anonymousreply 530January 23, 2023 11:28 PM

He didn't walk that Devil's Backbone Trail tightrope at the peak, in the middle of winter. There would be no point in doing so.

by Anonymousreply 532January 23, 2023 11:37 PM

I wondered if he'd "gotten his things in order" recently.

Here's a winter hike on the trail .

by Anonymousreply 534January 24, 2023 12:00 AM

"So, he was climbing that, in winter, during a snow storm?"

We don't know if he was there specifically, but that trail there would be an insanely dangerous place to be in a storm that had high winds. There were massive storms the week he vanished, and the biggest SoCal had seen for years, at that altitude the trail would have been covered in snow and/or ice, with a steep fall on either side. Plus the winds have been from the west or southwest, and the mountains would have sheltered a hiker from some of the wind during the ascent up the canyon. So a hiker who got up to the ridge at the top of the mountains might not have realized what kinds of winds they would face up there, and might have been overconfident or bloody-minded enough to keep going on an icy trail, in high winds, with a dangerous drop on either side.

I'm a Californian, I spent this weekend up in the mountains, hiking in the snow. Not a lot of snow, and only the easiest trails, but even then a group of experienced hikers were still slipping, with traction devices on our boots and some walking poles, we were still aware of being one misstep away from a broken bone.

My dear nephew had a friend who went hiking and never returned. The friend was 30 years old. My nephew was quite traumatized about his friend's accident. When I mentioned the situation to an experienced hiker, who knew nothing of this person, or my nephew, he said, "it wasn't an accident."

I never mentioned this to my nephew. Years later when he brought up the friend I asked him whether they ever found out what happened. He said yes, he left a suicide note.

True story.

The latest - Julian Sands’ brother says he fears missing actor won’t be found.

Nick Sands, from Gargrave, Yorkshire, told the Craven Herald that he had accepted that the prospects of finding the Leaving Las Vegas actor 11 days after he went missing in treacherous conditions in a Californian mountain range alive had all but gone.

“He has not yet been declared missing, presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone,” Nick Sands told the local news site. “However, sibling rivalry being what it is, it would be just like him to walk out of there and prove me wrong.”

by Anonymousreply 582January 24, 2023 9:44 PM

Julian, who is the middle of five brothers, returned to England three times a year and had been due to visit his hometown of Craven, on 30 January, brother Nick told the Craven Herald.

Instead, his brothers will gather at their favourite local pub in Skipton without him.

“He will be missed, and I guess we will raise a glass to him,” Nick told the news site.

I have to wonder at this point if he was perhaps eaten by a bear or other large animal.

It seems like he would have been located in some way by now....unless little remains of him that can still be found?

by Anonymousreply 590January 24, 2023 10:27 PM

One of his brothers received a "Most Eligible Bachelor" reward from some newspaper back in the day. Wish I could see a picture of him from back then.

by Anonymousreply 591January 24, 2023 10:34 PM

r590 it's a huge, steep area - we're not talking a small hillside. Mount Baldy Wilderness is 6,819 acres and it's 4,193′. It's rocky with sheer cliffs and there is snow cover, along with major storms hitting after Sands set out before those storms.

Not likely to find him until after winter or at all, unless he is stumbled upon by other hikers or forest service during maintenance of some kind.

by Anonymousreply 592January 24, 2023 10:35 PM

"I have to wonder at this point if he was perhaps eaten by a bear or other large animal."

More likely coyotes and vultures, bears aren't very fond of high, bare, mountaintops where there's nothing to eat.

The likeliest scenario is that he slipped on ice, snow, or mud, and fell down a steep slope that was covered in rocks. It may all have been over before he had time to realize what happened, because look at this mountain. Look at all the vertical gray lines in the canyons... those are avalanche chutes. Almost all of that mountainside is steep enough for avalanches.
