LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. - A mother of four known to friends and family as the "dancing hiking queen" who frequently went on "fearless hikes" was killed after sliding on ice and falling to her death on Mt. Baldy last weekend.

Family identified Crystal Paula Gonzalez-Landas as the hiker who died Jan. 8 in a "tragic accident," the second such falling death to have occurred on Mt. Baldy in the last two weeks.

Crews believe Gonzalez-Landas slid 500 to 700 feet down Baldy Bowl amid icy conditions after she was located on a steep and icy hillside. Several other hikers had rushed to her aid.

She was transported via helicopter to a hospital where she died from her injuries.

If he was hiking on Mt. Baldy and has been gone for 5 days, this is not likely to end well. Those mountains are steep and rocky, that terrain doesn't fuck around at any time of year year, and right now there will be deep snow on much of the mountain. The poor man has been missing for 5 days, 5 days in which there's been serious weather, and if he was injured then death from hypothermia is possible, as is having his location obscured by snow as well as scrubby, rocky, semi-desert terrain.

Remember last year, when a super-fit hiker went missing in a small hill park in Pleasanton, Ca., and it took months to find the body in rocky canyon that was off the trail? Yeah. This is likely to be the same, only worse, because the area in question is larger, and more formidable.

I remember him from all the way back in Oxford Blues. He had an interesting young beauty, and he aged well - at least in that hiking pic. That's terrible that he's missing.

None of the news stories say what part of Mt. Baldy he was hiking in. With all the recent snow, he must have been at a lower elevation since there would be many skiers on the upper slopes. I’ve hiked and skied on Mt. Baldy many times. Much of the mountain is treacherously steep, even its lower elevations. I can’t imagine why an experienced hiker as he’s said to be would hike alone in this area, or anywhere. I hope Sands is found alive, but that’s unlikely after several days in freezing temperatures.

R52, someone said he was around the Crystal Lake area, which is under Mt. Hawkins, maybe 10 miles from Mt. Baldy as the crow flies (probably 50 by ground). The lake itself is at 5,500 feet and a quick look at google maps shows that the terrain is high and steep, Sands could have climbed up into altitudes with serious snow if he'd wanted to.

But of course, in terrain that's high, steep, rocky, deserted, and experiencing winter storms, there are plenty of things that can kill a lone hiker other than snow.

I, uh, don't think there's gonna be a link to a source that verifies that Julian Sands' bladder was eaten by coyotes.

He was absolutely stunning in A Room With A View, a movie that was a major gay awakening for generations of gay men. It didn’t matter if he could act or not and that he seems almost autistic in it, the weirdness just added to his radiance. He aged like milk though. I was shocked to see how badly he’d aged just a few years later in Warlock, and his sort of autistic weirdness had suddenly allocated him to villain roles rather than leading romantic males. He did manage to eke out a sort of weird d list career, with occasional forays into the b list.

Sands’ car has been found and apparently he was hiking in the Baldy Bowl area. I’ve done that hike many times, but not at a time of bad weather. Although the Baldy Bowl trail is a popular hike, it’s also moderately difficult, with quite a rise in elevation. Much of the trail is narrow, with sharp drops on either side. In ordinary snow conditions, it would be risky. However, wind-blown rain has recently caused much of the snow to turn to ice, which makes the hike even more difficult. It may be a bit far-fetched, but among the wildlife in the area there are mountain lions. Sands could have been attacked by a lion.

R76 I've also hiked that trail... alone. But in summer. Given the weather conditions (at the time he left and what the forecasts promised) it's pretty odd he went off by himself, although he's hiked high elevation in the snow in the past. We may never know the story.

R77 why do you hike alone? You should at least have a buddy you can check in with along the way. I’ve been in two situations where experienced hikers in my group suffered gruesome injuries. One had to be airlifted and the other had to be driven out by an EMS atv. They only survived because they were part of a group. The hike leader called 911 with coordinates, one member of our group was an EMT and was able to help. I would not even do an easy hike solo.

It's "purifying" to me to be alone like that. Having said that, I will hike day hikes alone, usually where there are other hikers - not too remote. Overnight or multiple night hikes I'll go with my partner.

Baldy trail, though not easy, is usually hiked by other hikers - just not in bad weather. He's an experienced hiker - he probably thought it wasn't that hard. Ice, however, is really, really hard... even with crampons.

Here's a picture of the Baldy Bowl trail, which is steep and rocky at every point. He could have slipped and fallen off the trail at almost any point, or been pushed off by falling water or rocks, and the body would be so hard to find in that rocky, scrubby terrain that the searchers might as well wait for a thaw and look for a kettle of vultures.

But look at the top of the trail, where it approaches the summit, along a ridge above a huge bowl of cliffs and old rockslides... and remember that the storm winds came in from the west. To me it looks like a strong enough wind could have picked up a hiker and blown him over the edge into the rocky basin, where he'd never be found.

There is no reason to be hiking up there in winter and storm conditions. Folly. Nobody says he was heading that way, either. If he's an experienced hiker he would have known that.

I believe he was kidnapped by Ted Shackleford in a twisted plan to free up more occasional parts.

The son of Julian Sands has joined the desperate search for his father - who disappeared six days ago while hiking in 'extremely dangerous' California mountains.

The 65-year-old actor, who starred in A Room With A View, has not been seen since attempting to climb Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel Mountains - one of the most popular trails in Los Angeles.

Sands was reported missing by his family at around 7.30pm on Friday amid warnings of 'extremely dangerous' conditions for hiking.

His son Henry, who is also an experienced hiker, flew out from London on Tuesday to assist with the search.

He is understood to have retraced the route his father took.

However, the 37-year-old, who owns a communications business, was forced to abandon his efforts due to the hostile weather.

It comes after a ground search was attempted on Saturday, but also had to be abandoned due to a storm. It has not been safe to send rescue teams back out since.

Drones and helicopters have been deployed to the mountain range, which is 40 miles from Los Angeles, where the actor has lived in Beverly Hills since 2020.

Rescuers last night recovered a snow-covered car thought to belong to Sands, which was towed away from the area.

It is not known if the actor would have taken a tent, but a source close to the family said he would have been ‘well equipped’ for a day’s hike.

A source close to the family said: ‘Henry is taking a very practical approach in organising everything and getting involved.

‘I think it was just instinct for him to fly out when he heard his father was missing.’

Meanwhile, it is not the first time the keen outdoorsman has come into trouble while hiking, having had a brush with death on the Andes in the early 1990s.

I just found out his birthday is the same as mine - January 4th - so pretty recently. Getting older and birthdays sometimes take their toll. I hope that's not the case; I would think he wouldn't want to put anyone else in harm's way (including family) trying to find him. There's something about that area that is hard to describe. I hiked it with a couple of friends when there were only patches of snow here and there, and I found myself desperately hoping that we would not get lost, because I could see how such a place could swallow a person up.

R160, r162 I don’t think this was suicide. If that had been his plan, he wouldn’t have told his wife where he was going to hike. Apparently he did, and she called the sheriff’s office when he didn’t return Friday evening. I’ve read that he has hiked that trail before, so he presumably knew its hazards. Also, weather reports were very clear that a second storm was due that weekend. He probably thought he could complete his hike before the worst of the storm hit, but had some sort of accident. Based on his cellphone pings, he may have been in the area between Baldy Saddle and the summit. That’s the most dangerous art of the trail. If he fell from that part of the trail, finding and retrieving his body would be difficult. That’s the area where the woman hiker died last week. I’ve gone on strenuous hikes for 50 years, but I never tempt fate by hiking in bad weather. If it’s snowing, I’ll go skiing, but never hiking.

If you want to hike on your own go to a local park, not to Mount Baldy. Only go to the more challenging locations if you have a route planned and are with at least one partner.

I have always believed that trampers and climbers should pay for insurance if they get fucked up or lost, or have to pay for the rescue. I had a friend who was in the U.S., feel down a ravine and broke his leg. he had to pay for the helicopter out, and hospital bills, and was a fuck load.

There are a few states that require "negligent" hikers/climbers to reimburse for some expenses. But they usually don't come after those who don't pay.

Someone who fell at any point of the trail might fall a long way or fall someplace he's covered by brush or rocks, out of sight of the trail, and it sure doesn't look like the sort of area where hikers go off trail very much. And if he fell into that avalanche zone up in the upper left, he'll never be found.

That wasn't in steep or snowy terrain at all, so surely the costs were much less expensive than what is probably being incurred in searching for Mr. Sands. I wonder if his family at some point will issue a "we've made our peace with it" type of statement.

I don't understand this concern over costs. My brother is a firefighter and he gets paid whether he fights a fire or just sits in the station playing cards. And he doesn't get a bonus if the fire is a media spectacle.

R524 I’ve hiked that trail many times and almost felt like I recognized a number of the boulders in the video. What the video doesn’t adequately convey is the steepness of the terrain on either side of the trail and the depth of the drop. I’m not particularly afraid of heights, but that part of the trail requires extreme attention and caution. I will only hike risky areas when it’s dry, never when there’s frost or snow on the trail. I just can’t imagine a lone hiker making this trek.

I think the best that we can hope for is that Julian Sands fell, hit his head, and died instantly. It’s awful to think of him lying injured and unable to help himself in the extreme cold of Mt. Baldy.

There were massive storms the week he vanished, and the biggest SoCal had seen for years, at that altitude the trail would have been covered in snow and/or ice, with a steep fall on either side. Plus the winds have been from the west or southwest, and the mountains would have sheltered a hiker from some of the wind during the ascent up the canyon. So a hiker who got up to the ridge at the top of the mountains might not have realized what kinds of winds they would face up there, and might have been overconfident or bloody-minded enough to keep going on an icy trail, in high winds, with a dangerous drop on either side.

I'm a Californian, I spent this weekend up in the mountains, hiking in the snow. Not a lot of snow, and only the easiest trails, but even then a group of experienced hikers were still slipping, with traction devices on our boots and some walking poles, we were still aware of being one misstep away from a broken bone.

r590 it's a huge, steep area - we're not talking a small hillside. Mount Baldy Wilderness is 6,819 acres and it's 4,193′. It's rocky with sheer cliffs and there is snow cover, along with major storms hitting after Sands set out before those storms.

Not likely to find him until after winter or at all, unless he is stumbled upon by other hikers or forest service during maintenance of some kind.

More likely coyotes and vultures, bears aren't very fond of high, bare, mountaintops where there's nothing to eat.

The likeliest scenario is that he slipped on ice, snow, or mud, and fell down a steep slope that was covered in rocks. It may all have been over before he had time to realize what happened, because look at this mountain. Look at all the vertical gray lines in the canyons... those are avalanche chutes. Almost all of that mountainside is steep enough for avalanches.
