Sinus Congestion

What works? Afrin, Sudafed?? Any other remedies?

by Anonymousreply 45September 2, 2023 7:28 PM

Neti pot.

by Anonymousreply 1January 15, 2023 3:19 PM

NO Afrin

by Anonymousreply 2January 15, 2023 3:20 PM

R2 why

by Anonymousreply 3January 15, 2023 3:21 PM

Neti pot - otherwise just take the normal over the counter pills but try having some steamy and spicy food like a hot soup - hot spices will loosen the mucus in your sinuses and make your nose run, breathing in steam can help that too.

by Anonymousreply 4January 15, 2023 3:21 PM

Temporary relief and becomes addictive after a day, R3.

by Anonymousreply 5January 15, 2023 3:23 PM

Afrin us similar to opiates, the more you use it, the more of something you create which adds to the congestion (forgive my crude analogy).

Use saline, aerosol saline spray and try a prescription nose spray, Fluticasone is what I use.

Try getting an air purifier or succulents for their purification abilities, and a humidifier. Heated blankets exacerbate things by further drying you out. Hydrate, I also use eucalyptus and Virginian cedar in a roll-on bottle- better than Vicks, but be careful bc you can poison pets with oil. Also use a carrier oil so you're using a diluted amount.

by Anonymousreply 6January 15, 2023 3:31 PM

^is similar (the more you use opiates the more pain receptors your body creates, same with Afrin and nasal congestion, use more, makes congestion worse)

If you’re going to use a neti pot, small suggestion:

Get one of these for maintenance, OP. Don't over use it or it'll irritate you sinuses.

Neti post should be used only with DISTILLED WATER.

Sudafed is the best.

by Anonymousreply 10January 15, 2023 4:04 PM

Sudafed Severe Sinus pills, neti pot, drinking lots of fluids and broths. I use my neti pot with tap water and NeilMed sinus rinse. I don't understand the warnings if you live in a place with safe tap water.

by Anonymousreply 11January 15, 2023 4:05 PM

Hot, steamy shower.

by Anonymousreply 12January 15, 2023 4:06 PM

Jungle Juice?

by Anonymousreply 13January 15, 2023 4:07 PM

Buy a can of compressed air and insert the straw dealie into the nozzle.

Close one nostril and insert the straw well inside the other and squeeze the trigger.

This breaks up the logjam allows for better breathing.

R14 is a murderer by proxy

by Anonymousreply 15January 15, 2023 4:49 PM

Sudafed, OP, but be prepared to blow the pharmacist for it. In my state they have it behind the counter and want to know your entire life history before they’ll sell it to you.

I’m guessing if you’re feeling under the weather you may not want to blow the old man pharmacist, why I warned ya.

This xylitol-based decongestant was recommended to me by my dental office. It works good. Been using it morning and night for 4 years. My sleeping and daytime energy are much better.

Pro tip: Place nozzle at entrance of nostril, NOT INSIDE, then in rapid-fire succession spray 4 times while inhaling, then the other nostril. Repeat. Swallow and you should be able to taste the xyliol (it's sweet). If you can't taste it, do it again. Once tasted, you can start blowing your nose. (If you start blowing your nose without tasting it first, it won't work.)

Don't use neti pots if you're completely clogged up. My aunt did that and the fluid stayed in her face for a couple days-- she could feel it in her nose and under her eyes. Apparently it works best if your nose is actively running.

by Anonymousreply 18January 15, 2023 8:17 PM

[quote] Been using it morning and night for 4 years.

You haven’t gotten over a sinus infection in four years? Oh my god.

by Anonymousreply 19January 15, 2023 8:38 PM

Any ideas for clogged ears following a bad cold? Have been clogged for over a week. My Neti pot isn’t doing anything for it.

by Anonymousreply 20January 15, 2023 8:43 PM

Sinus rinse, humidifier, and occasional Fluticasone spray which stops the post-nasal drip/cougb

by Anonymousreply 21January 15, 2023 8:47 PM

R19 I never had a sinus infection. My sinuses are always clogged because my face and maxilla didn't develop properly due to a combination of factors, so there's not enough room for things to function like they should. The spray allows me to manually unclog my sinuses. Thankfully the spray is safe for daily use.

by Anonymousreply 22January 15, 2023 8:49 PM

What R10 said.

by Anonymousreply 23January 15, 2023 8:49 PM

I was really only funnin’ ya, r22, but damn, that really does suck.

Glad you found something that works to relieve your discomfort.

by Anonymousreply 24January 15, 2023 8:51 PM

I use Synex. The mist is easier to take and it has a mentholish cooling effect.

by Anonymousreply 25January 15, 2023 8:57 PM

Decapitation.

Bump for incoming fall allergies

by Anonymousreply 33September 2, 2023 6:01 PM

If the congestion is unbearable, I’ve sometimes resorted to using nasal spray in a single nostril.

The next day, if desperately needed, I will use it in the other nostril.

But you really don’t want to use it consecutively in the same nostril, as the nostril will go back to being congested and you will continue to need the spray.

by Anonymousreply 34September 2, 2023 6:06 PM

R34 steroid or afrin?

by Anonymousreply 35September 2, 2023 6:08 PM

Afrin. But it’s truly only for emergencies.

by Anonymousreply 36September 2, 2023 6:10 PM

Daily use of this product solved my morning sinus congestion problem. Now get very few headaches. No longer use daily, just when I wake with that sinus pressure. Comes with applicator. Economical, use with distilled water.

Could not post direct link to product on Amazon. Look for : NeilMed Sinus Rinse - A Complete Sinus Nasal Rinse Kit, 50 count

by Anonymousreply 37September 2, 2023 6:14 PM

Lots of sinus issues are caused by biofilm in there.

by Anonymousreply 38September 2, 2023 6:17 PM

Tylenol cold and sinus is the only thing that truly works if you're very congested. Trust me on this.

by Anonymousreply 39September 2, 2023 6:32 PM

Bromelain (pill form) helped me with sinus infections / sinusitis. It's inexpensive and is derived from pineapple.

by Anonymousreply 40September 2, 2023 6:53 PM

Advil Cold & Sinus in the red box! It is the only thing that relieved my severe congestion with Covid last year! Have your ID ready because it is behind the counter (they made me show my ID when it is obvious I am way over 21!).

by Anonymousreply 41September 2, 2023 6:54 PM

R40 how so???

by Anonymousreply 42September 2, 2023 6:55 PM

R42, what do you mean?

I used to get sinus infections (with headaches) and the bromelain seemed to mitigate that - no side effects.

by Anonymousreply 43September 2, 2023 7:04 PM

R43 just curious if you knew how, I assumed all dataloungers are scientists lol

by Anonymousreply 44September 2, 2023 7:14 PM

I gave up cow's milk and my sinus problems went away. I still have cheese, ice cream and yogurt but no more than once a week.
