WHET to Natalie Imbruglia?

She was everywhere in the nineties. Talk shows, magazines. Now crickets.

by Anonymousreply 23February 6, 2023 1:13 PM

She had ONE song. Doesn’t deserve to be a timeless icon because of it. I don’t even like the song.

by Anonymousreply 1January 14, 2023 2:18 PM

She put out a new album in 2021

by Anonymousreply 2January 14, 2023 2:18 PM

Sorry, being R1 requires me to be bitchy, so add "but you knew that" to the end of my post.

by Anonymousreply 3January 14, 2023 2:19 PM

Actually no R3. I had no idea that was her only song. I didn't particularly like it either but she was pretty. Her and that Sarah McCloughlin were around the same time.

by Anonymousreply 4January 14, 2023 2:30 PM

She had a couple more hits in the UK and continental Europe ("Big Mistake", "Shiver", etc.), but in the US, "Torn" is the only one we remember.

by Anonymousreply 5January 14, 2023 3:33 PM

Lilith Fair never invited her to perform, so she was relegated to being another female footnote in 90s pop music.

All those '90s gals, Sarah Mclachlan, Natalie Imbruglia, Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Jewel, Dido, etc., had very fleeting fame. Only a select few can endure in the limelight.

Oh, dear.

This style of music faded out as Britney Spears and her clones came in the scene, and hip-hop replaced rock in the pop world.

by Anonymousreply 9January 14, 2023 3:58 PM

Don't forget Liz Phair and Fiona Apple.

by Anonymousreply 10January 14, 2023 4:05 PM

R7 Dido managed to stay popular a little longer, her partnering with Eminem for Stan helped a little.

by Anonymousreply 11January 14, 2023 4:06 PM

It's interesting they could coexist with Spice Girls, Mariah Carey, TLC, Celine and Madonna. It was a very diverse time for female artists where you could do different styles and be celebrated. But once Britney Spears came on the scene, bubblegum pop was the only sound and led to a massive overhaul of the industry. Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Mariah and Janet Jackson who were much older even hopped on that kiddy style. While Alicia Keys, Michelle Branch, Corrine Bailey Rae and Natasha Bedingfield were popular but kinda a minority presence in comparison to how mainstream the Lilith Fair girls were.

She had a small cameo with Holly Valance in what was supposed to be the final season of Neighbours. You can tell she's had some work done.

There was a brief period in the 90s when any female singer with the guitar or piano got a record deal. It was a bit like the reality TV rush of the early 2000s.

[quote]She was everywhere in the nineties.

She was? She had ONE song, and it wasn't even released u til '97. She was really just a blip on the pop culture radar.

[quote]Talk shows, magazines.

Are you Australian? I'm American and I don't ever remember her on any talk shows or magazine covers over here. Her ONE song got (admittedly massive for a time) radio airplay. Consequently she sold some albums (of her ONE song). But she was never the media sensation you describe.

by Anonymousreply 15February 5, 2023 10:52 AM

No R15 I'm American. I remember seeing her.

Surprised this thread was bumped.

by Anonymousreply 16February 5, 2023 2:48 PM

She had at least 3 songs in the US - besides "Torn", she had "Smoke" and "Wishing I Was There".

by Anonymousreply 17February 5, 2023 6:35 PM

Smoke is underrated.

by Anonymousreply 18February 6, 2023 3:27 AM

I only know that one song she did and nobody remembered her after that.

by Anonymousreply 19February 6, 2023 3:30 AM

What talk shows and magazines featured her?

by Anonymousreply 20February 6, 2023 3:35 AM

She married Daniel Johns, lead singer/guitarist in Supposedly they broke up because he was ‘too happy’ and couldn’t write good music. Sadly, he’s very messed up.

by Anonymousreply 21February 6, 2023 11:31 AM

I remember being at summer camp with a radio Walkman listening to Wishing I Was There. I guess that was her follow up to Torn? Smoke is another I recall and I believe she had a music video for it? Wrong Impression is one I listen to fairly often.

by Anonymousreply 22February 6, 2023 12:04 PM

I get her mixed up with Natasha(r) Bedingfield.
