John Mellencamp
Just bought tickets to see Mellencamp for the first time ever and I’m actually excited! I feel like his later, more textured work is overlooked in favor of Jack and Diane and Pink Houses.
Tell me, Datalounge,, what do you think of Indiana’s musical poet?

His album Uh-huh is one of my faves (and shockingly almost 40 years old).

I may be wrong but you might have eliminated the first comma also. However, I live in a Small Town and don’t know much.

Dated my aunt in the 80s. Short little pig.

R4 I’m OK with that, but please define pig.

John is difficult and widely disliked. Mean drunk.
He scuttled his own career by being an asshole to people who could have helped him.

He’s old and tired. Couldn’t pay me enough to see him “perform “

DISCUSSING JOHN WITHOUT USING HIS LEGIMATE LAST NAME BRINGS OUT THE COUGAR IN ME!!!!

John was textured enough when I thought he was a John Waters discovery romancing Edith Massey in the 'This Time' video.

It was so sexy that he had a heart attack at 36!

I thought he died? Or was it just his music??

Love It's A Lonely Old Night and Check it Out.
He has appalling taste for dating Meg joker-face Ryan.

Good and well executed but very dull songs that I don’t enjoy much. He’s a lot like Tom Petty to me. Mom loves them both.

Mediocre artistry. Sub-par fathering.

Never cared for his music under any of his name iterations, although I do admire that he dropped his studio name to reclaim his real name.

I enjoyed that CD a human Wheels, especially the songs Real Life and Human Wheels. I also liked his song Wild Nights with Meshell Ndegeocello. Sometime I appreciate his musics more than his lyrics, which can get corny and preachy. But he is talented. Is his hair real?

R17 I agree with your take on his lyrics and also on his collaboration with Me’Shell. I much prefer his later, more textured/layered work. And I should have made clear that I wasn’t interested in his private life but this is DL…

Little Pink Houses, is my favorite song by him. I thought he was cute back then.

I remember him saying Streisand asked him to producer her 1984 album "Emotion" but he didn't have the time, nor did he think he would be a good fit for a Streisand album. He ended up producing just one track he wrote for her - "You Are A Step In the Right Direction" - but didn't sing background vocals on it like she asked him to do. As it turns out, that's the most embarrassing track on the whole album. Barbra Cougar Streisand she ain't.

He is an avowed socialist and chooses to live in Indiana, a very Trumpy and evangelical state. Is that brave, or simply a manifestation of his oppositional nature? There was a profile in Rolling Stone several years back, in which it was reported that he was sporting a black eye as a result of a fist fight with one of his sons. Apparently, the fighting was nothing unusual as far as he was concerned. I recently heard an interview, and he doesn't seem to think he's any great shakes, and seemed less modest or self deprecating than having severe self-esteem issues. I would not want to be him!
