Experiences with Cindy Adams/Liz Smith?
Obviously dictator-apologist Cindy Adams is a massive cunt, but I have to admit I like her for it. Her smirky innuendo-filled reports on A Current Affair were classic. But I'm sure she's a horror show in person.
Then there's her late rival, corn-fed lez-lez Liz Smith, who was proud to be considered "the nice one" of the gossipeuses.
Now in her tenth decade, Cindy's still churning out her monosyllabic column for the Post. A picture of late-period Cindy at link.
Anyone have any tales to tell on the tale-tellers?

The only thing I ever liked Cindy Adams for was inspiring the great SNL skit with Nora Dunn as Cindy and Phil Hartman as her husband Joey.

I worked for a long ago restaurant columnist named Sheldon Landwehr in the early 1990s. Cindy phoned him 2 to 3 x a week and she was always a total bitch. Nothing exceptional, just the Joy Philbin “I’m waiting and I don’t like waiting” type of bitch.

I used to be a catering captain and I worked the opening night party for the Broadway show "The Lion King" in 1996 at the Roxy nightclub. Liz and Anne were there together like two old lezzies. I was such a huge fan of Ann Richards I had to say hi and introduce myself, both she and Liz were charming, it was a really fun New York night.
I've also waited on Cindy Adams a couple times, who was slightly imperious but actually pretty nice. I would never call her warm, but she knows how to behave I think.

She’s a hold over from another era. I think it must be extremely unsettling to have absolutely everyone around you know and love die, leaving you alone. The NYC of today is a completely different animal and the power players don’t work or react as expected. If she had any “sway” or influence over others, Cindy is relegated to sit in a corner now with her clever diatribes.
And that’s one ratty, Korean wig if I ever saw one!

Casual interaction (benefits) with Liz Smith: down to earth, kind, class act. You could understand lot reading between the lines in her column and she always told all she knew after someone passed away.
Cindy Adams mostly bitchy and not much ever that was new, or exclusive. She did have the ear of the infamous, but never really revealed much.

Aunt Cindy always appreciated the juicy tidbits I fed her for the column. It made me feel good that my position at the heart of New York society had a practical purpose. Of course, she'll now have access to the most intimate corners of DC society, thanks to me.

r33, a guy I was seeing pretty casually knew Diane a bit and the four of us went to drinks, dinner and then to a show (The Liam Neeson revival of The Crucible). Peggy and Diane were so warm and funny and both did very funny imitations of Maggie Smith and told great stories. Peggy and I loved the show, Diane and my date were horribly bored, which itself became funny.

r35 Thank you. Any tidbits are beyond appreciated, as our history is getting wiped out out due to age and revisionists with an agenda. What might not seem interesting enough to go into detail on, I can (almost) promise you that for most of us it is. Of course if it's fucking boring beyond belief you will hear "get a blog" but that's what we do. No pressure!

R26 - Barbara Walters was part of that group, too. It was Cindy, Walters, Judge Judy and Joan Rivers.
As a matter of fact, that fateful day in December 2006 when Rosie O went to war with Trump on 'The View', Walters was vacationing with those three women on Judge Judy's yacht - that's where they were spending Chrisitmas, Chanukah and New Year's. She got a call from ABC telling her she had to get back to NYC immediately, to put out the fire that O'Donnell started - Trump was in the papers threatening to sue ABC and Walters (creator/producer of the show) over O'Donnell. So Walters had to ask Judy to dock , and fly back to Manhattan a few days before Christmas to calm everyone down, which ruined her holiday vacation thanks to Rosie (she details all of this in her memoir). Walters was not happy.

I saw Cindy one, for all of 20 seconds. I was a house manager for an off Broadway house and she attended with (gasp) Henny Youngman who must have been 100 at the time (this was mid/late 80s). Henny wasn't feeling well so she was leaving early with him (honestly, he looked dead to me) and she was extremely pleasant and apologetic. I know that encounter doesn't mean much, but that's my story of Cindy. She was kind to the old man. Never read her or Liz although, obviously, I knew who they were. BTW, never met Liz but always heard she was the cunty one.

Cindy and Streisand (and Shirley MacLaine) all share the same birthday. Streisand has always hated Cindy - as Cindy was very negative to Streisand in her gossip columns since the 60s. Streisand did like Liz Smith, as Smith was always kind and positive to her.

Now and then I would send e-mails to Liz about her column - and she would always write back.
When Suzy died, Liz wrote a whole column about her - and didn’t mention Suzygate (look it up).I wrote her and said I was disappointed - and she wrote back to say I was right to be so.

I've hated Cindy since the late 80s when she published a really nasty comment about a showbiz pal who had died by suicide. My friend had a 14-year-old son who read the comment. Kicking somebody when they're down is the lowest of the low. Liz Smith, on the other hand, commented as well about the tragedy of suicide and mental illness and the pain for those left behind. Now, that was classy.

Cindy's latest column:
[quote]New York, New York, a once helluva town. Not now.
[quote]East Side, West Side, all around the town: Pot smells. Vagrants lying on the sidewalk. Females in shorts so short you can see remains of their food. Trash wherever. Roaches, rats. Empty stores. Others boarded up. Taxes, prices, everything more expensive. Facing charges, a Long Island admitted liar wants re-election to Congress. Bicyclists, coming the wrong way, hitting law-abiding citizens — like me. Schools overwhelmed, understaffed.
[quote]Human beings who don’t speak English, no money, zero allegiance to our country, have unexamined backgrounds, can even be unhealthy, in some cases transport drugs, plus in some cases lifestyles and streets now so dangerous we fear walking out alone. Residents relocating. Limited school buses, vagrants/sickos/mentally ill have harmed people so there’s fear entering certain areas, Broadway’s on life support, plus officials who let cop killers walk free.

Coincidentally just finished Liz's autobio. Struck me as a fun-loving gal. Only part that disturbed me was her writing somewhat approvingly about Donald Trump. Her book was written before he was Pres. Had she been alive on Jan. 6th, she might have changed her mind. Cindy always struck me as a difficult count.

Liz always heaped praise on Cindy (that I don’t think was ever reciprocated). This was in the later years, when Liz and Cindy were both at the NY Post.
After spending years at the Daily News with Suzy, Liz was tired of catfights. When “Suzygate” blew up in the late 80s, Liz wrote about it every day for like 3 weeks. I think she hated Suzy.

Suzygate: only three weeks after he began his column at Newsday, James Revson revealed that Suzy had reported on a party she hadn't attended, including the names of people who weren't there. Suzy, who had been a society columnist for decades, went ballistic. Very entertaining.

There was a great moment at an event of some sort where Howard Stern sent Stuttering John to interview celebs on the red carpet. He approached Cindy who was with her late husband, the terribly unfunny comedian Joey Adams, and asked, "Cindy, can you tell us, when was the last time Joey had a solid bowel movement?" Cindy grabbed Joey in a huff and stormed off.
