Tori Spelling: I'm A Gay Icon

"I’m a huge fan of gays,” Spelling told Reuters. “They love me; I love them. They consider me kind of a gay icon, which they’ve labeled me as.” I can't find an original source for this quote so it may not be recent, but is this true DL? I remember her as the annoying hag in the movie "TRICK" but what else has she done to warrant gay icon status?

by Anonymousreply 53June 20, 2025 7:32 PM

Guess again, Tori.

by Anonymousreply 1January 11, 2023 11:09 PM

I don't think she's ever contributed anything to the gay rights movement other than that one movie role. I think one of her kids came out as Trans last year and she seemed pretty supportive.

by Anonymousreply 2January 11, 2023 11:24 PM

We fucking hate you, nepo baby. Fuck off and die.

by Anonymousreply 3January 11, 2023 11:26 PM
"I’m a huge fan of gays,” Spelling told Reuters.

The correct Spelling of that admission: HAG

by Anonymousreply 4January 11, 2023 11:57 PM
They consider me kind of a gay icon

No they don't.

by Anonymousreply 5January 12, 2023 12:04 AM

Her kids have honorary gay uncles which she has bleated about continually, trying to make the word Guncle happen. Maybe she's desperate for gay acceptance because most straight guys think she looks hideous.

She's too messy and thirsty to be any kind of icon.

Tori, if you're lurking here: stop hoarding crap and instagramming your hypochondria. And pay off your debts!

by Anonymousreply 6January 12, 2023 10:50 AM

She was so annoying in Trick - the lead should have punched her in the face.

by Anonymousreply 7January 12, 2023 10:52 AM

No Shannen Doherty and Tiffani Thiessen are the gay icons.

by Anonymousreply 8January 12, 2023 11:00 AM

She kinda qualifies because she looks like a trannie.

by Anonymousreply 9January 12, 2023 11:48 AM

Why does every woman think they are a "gay icon" just because they have gay friends or some fans? It reeks of entitlement. You can just say you're a gay ally and support us. Honestly I much prefer ally to icon. Because gay icon status is highly debated and I don't think in the 21st century, we need straight women as our proxies.

by Anonymousreply 10January 12, 2023 11:52 AM

Well if in her world 'clown' has the same meaning as 'icon', then I guess she's right.

by Anonymousreply 11January 12, 2023 12:05 PM

Honestly she was really funny in Trick. Still don't know if she's "Gay Icon" but very funny.

No, Tori, no.

by Anonymousreply 13January 12, 2023 1:06 PM

R10 I agree with every word 👍 we need more allys not icons. We have enough of those. But I also think it's the gay fans who elevate their female idols to "Icon status". Gay Beyonce fans for example will insist that she is one, even though she's never really spoken up for us or our causes but only because she has a lot of gay fans. I honestly don't think having gay fans automatically =ICON.

by Anonymousreply 14January 12, 2023 1:32 PM

Being a common subject of impersonation by drag queens does have some credibility as far as being a gay icon. Both Beyoncé and tori qualify there.

by Anonymousreply 15January 12, 2023 1:34 PM

Icon is a strong word but #donnamartingraduates resonated with us in high school at the time. I guess not all that gay except for the fact that I am gay.

by Anonymousreply 16January 12, 2023 1:35 PM
"I’m a huge fan of gays,”

But are they a huge fan of you?

by Anonymousreply 17January 12, 2023 1:36 PM
"I’m a huge fan of gays,”

This is incredibly patronizing. Anytime a woman refers to gay men as "gays" as if they are a consumer item, I know they are full of shit.

by Anonymousreply 18January 12, 2023 1:37 PM

^THIS. Totally agree R18.

by Anonymousreply 19January 12, 2023 1:39 PM

She is a runnibnng joke which is differetn from an icon which implies respect and admiration.

by Anonymousreply 20January 12, 2023 1:40 PM

/running

by Anonymousreply 21January 12, 2023 1:41 PM

Once you say you're a gay icon, you're no longer a gay icon.

That said, her awful performance in "House of Yes" guaranteed that she would never, ever be a gay icon, ever.

by Anonymousreply 22January 12, 2023 1:41 PM

Her mere existence makes her a gay icon.

Born the daughter of a wealthy, legendary producer of some of the most iconically campy tv shows in history

Obtained multiple plastic surgery procedures to improve her less-than-stellar appearance

Managed to bag several hot guys in her time

90210 - enough said

Her catty relationship with her fabulously wealthy mother

Trick, The House of Yes, So NoTORIous and all of her reality tv and social media drama.

And she really is the first person I ever heard use the word “Guncle” (sadly, one of the guncles on her reality show passed away last year).

by Anonymousreply 23January 12, 2023 1:46 PM

R23 has made some convincing points. Tori's whole life story/trajectory is very interesting. If her life was a movie, I wonder what it would be called?

by Anonymousreply 24January 12, 2023 1:57 PM
Obtained multiple plastic surgery procedures to improve her less-than-stellar appearance

It didn't help; Doctors are not (always) miracle workers.

by Anonymousreply 25January 12, 2023 2:07 PM

Did Dean find a job yet?

by Anonymousreply 26January 12, 2023 2:09 PM

This is like being an alpha male if you have to tell everyone it’s probably not true.

by Anonymousreply 27January 12, 2023 3:09 PM

She was well-liked during the short run of So NoTorius, but as someone already said “icon” is a very strong word and saying “the gays” cancels out the goodwill.

by Anonymousreply 28January 12, 2023 5:54 PM

The gays.

Yup, to her we’re nothing more than sideshow freaks to be watched.

by Anonymousreply 29January 12, 2023 5:55 PM

Tori is a joke for gays. She is a joke icon. Yes, gays like that she is ridiculous, puppet like, and a mess. She has misunderstood what a Gay Icon is.

by Anonymousreply 30January 12, 2023 5:59 PM

Thirty posts and no mentions of "Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?"

by Anonymousreply 31January 12, 2023 6:00 PM

That short film she made where the gays had taken over her house was quite funny - I don't know what it was called.

by Anonymousreply 32January 12, 2023 6:46 PM

This one r32. Funny or Die “Horders”

I'm willing to allow her the status in recognition of giving us [italic]So NoTORIous[/italic], which is the project that made me aware of Zachary Quinto and Joe Manganiello.

by Anonymousreply 34January 12, 2023 8:26 PM

I'm the newest gay icon!

I had a friend who used to joke about the doctors on "Nip/Tuck" claiming they could do anything with plastic surgery, "If that were true, why does Tori Spelling still look the way she does?"

by Anonymousreply 36January 13, 2023 12:57 AM
She was well-liked during the short run of So NoTorius, but as someone already said “icon” is a very strong word and saying “the gays” cancels out the goodwill.

OK, gays!

by Anonymousreply 37January 13, 2023 12:58 AM

Saing she's a gay icon is like saying my rubbish bin is a gay icon: she's hardly inspiring or aspirational.

Born to enormous privilege but blew her chance to make a fortune behind the camera because her vanity and attention seeking made her insist she be in front of it.

She's just an instagram grifter these days, showing off her mostly unkempt and miserable crotch droppings and playing silly games about the state of her marriage to a man who looks like a ferret.

Does she still have warehouses full of crap?

by Anonymousreply 38January 13, 2023 3:47 AM

She's proof that money doesn't (always) buy happiness or a face.

by Anonymousreply 39June 20, 2025 2:16 AM

Hang it up, Tori.

by Anonymousreply 40June 20, 2025 2:18 AM

For Mother May I Sleep With Danger? alone she is.

by Anonymousreply 41June 20, 2025 5:54 AM

No Words

by Anonymousreply 42June 20, 2025 6:20 AM

R27 "This is like being an alpha male if you have to tell everyone it’s probably not true".

Also like women saying "I'm a girlie girl". Means you're a husky-looking crypto lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 43June 20, 2025 8:55 AM

It's bonkers to me how little her father left to her and her brother (was it $1M each?) and how mom Candy is worth $600 million and just refuses to give Tori a dime.

I guess she has stepped in to help from time to time when things got really dire--esp for the grandkids--but still, I find it fascinating that she just lets her daughter flail in the wind.

by Anonymousreply 44June 20, 2025 9:02 AM

I think Aaron realized too late that he spoiled his children and didn't teach them anything beyond spending money. Candy was his spouse, but he probably trusted her not to waste the money from his estate. If he left Tori a larger amount, she would be much worse off today.

by Anonymousreply 45June 20, 2025 1:44 PM

Are she and Dean divorced yet?

by Anonymousreply 46June 20, 2025 3:12 PM

She has the pedigree to be a gay icon. Her dad made schmaltzy 70s shows (Love Boat, Fantasy Island) and glamorous 80s soaps (Dynasty). She starred on a teen soap. She grew up in a mansion that had a gift wrapping room. She had a few highly publicized feuds. Then she did a scripted reality show, So Notorious, which was. a lot of fun.

But then she got married and seemed to disappear for several years into the boring straight lifestyle.

by Anonymousreply 47June 20, 2025 4:14 PM

Tori, just because we talk about you, doesn't make you an icon.

by Anonymousreply 48June 20, 2025 4:34 PM

She was the least interesting part of all these things. Shannen Doherty's on and off screen antics are what kept the gossip coming. I mean, there was a book released called " I Hate Brenda". You would never see any "I hate Donna" books. Why? Because she's too boring to hate or love in any capacity.

by Anonymousreply 49June 20, 2025 4:36 PM
No Shannen Doherty and Tiffani Thiessen are the gay icons.

Tiffani Thiessen is an icon only for people who love fat faces and chipmunk cheeks.

She actually did inspire feelings among gay people during the 90210--Melanie Hutsell had a memorable recurring sketch on SNL called "Tori! Tori! Tori!" (see below) about her that was at the time a gay favorite.

Also, she was famous for starring in the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel TV movie "Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?" at this time too.

Michael Musto would write in his column in the Voice that gay men loved her because at that time she actually worked very hard, even though she had so little beauty and talent.

by Anonymousreply 52June 20, 2025 6:15 PM

R45 - That's a good point. He definitely tried to do the right thing, but it was indeed too late. It's not a lesson you can successfully teach to a 32-year-old who has been given everything all her life.

Did she really have to have SIX children?? Talk about compounding a problem.
