Hopefully his repulsive buddy Depp will soon follow

by Anonymousreply 1January 11, 2023 9:16 PM

Good grief 2023 is roaring in like a lion! The hits keep coming. I didn't see this one coming at all. Was he ill?

by Anonymousreply 2January 11, 2023 9:25 PM

Bacterial meningitis, per the family's Facebook announcement.

by Anonymousreply 3January 11, 2023 9:26 PM
Good grief 2023 is roaring in like a lion!

Gurl, he was 78!

by Anonymousreply 4January 11, 2023 9:48 PM
Good grief 2023 is roaring in like a lion!

I read somewhere that there are so many deaths coming in the next 3 decades that, those who do not die, will be surprised at the upcoming rate of the death downpour in the boomer cohort.

by Anonymousreply 5January 11, 2023 9:51 PM

Bacterial meningitis? I wonder which bacteria and how he got it. It's not an especially common cause of death.

by Anonymousreply 6January 11, 2023 9:51 PM

Probably caught it from Depp. The man’s a walking Petri dish.

by Anonymousreply 7January 11, 2023 9:53 PM

It can be the result of a progressed sinus or ear infection.

by Anonymousreply 8January 11, 2023 9:54 PM

I’m so old I had this on vinyl. It’s beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 11January 11, 2023 10:07 PM

It’s not a competition, R10!

by Anonymousreply 12January 11, 2023 10:10 PM

I live across the street from a funeral home in London and in between Christmas and New Year they had a funeral where someone's casket was being brought out to a horse drawn carriage to the tune of Hi Ho Silver Lining.

RIP Jeff

by Anonymousreply 13January 11, 2023 10:10 PM

Many of these 60s and 70s music icons will be departing soon. Gotta go sometime.

by Anonymousreply 14January 11, 2023 10:18 PM
someone's casket was being brought out to a horse drawn carriage to the tune of Hi Ho Silver Lining.

He [bold]hated[/bold] that song he said it was like wearing a toilet seat around his neck for most of his life.

by Anonymousreply 15January 11, 2023 10:19 PM

He looked healthy and lively a few months ago in an interview with Depp.

by Anonymousreply 16January 11, 2023 10:19 PM

R16 Yes, he looks fit and spry and in better shape than Johnny.

by Anonymousreply 17January 11, 2023 10:32 PM

Today would be great if that could happen R1!

by Anonymousreply 18January 11, 2023 10:32 PM

It's a bit shocking because of all his peer group (aging Classic British rockers, from the 60s/70s), he seemed to be aging so well. He always was fit and looked relatively healthy. But at his age things can creep up on you.

Beck-ola is brilliant, as is all his stuff with Rod Stewart and the Jeff Beck Group.

by Anonymousreply 19January 11, 2023 10:45 PM

I’ve heard of this guy forever, but I can’t recall any of his music. Did he have any hits that might be familiar?

by Anonymousreply 20January 11, 2023 10:46 PM

Do you have "the googles" R20?

by Anonymousreply 21January 11, 2023 10:51 PM

r18=Whitney, Amber's slavishly devoted sister.

by Anonymousreply 22January 11, 2023 10:53 PM

He didn't release singles r20 and even his major records weren't that commercial. He was very into instrumental work, many of his albums are instrumental heavy with little to no lead vocals. He collaborated with a lot of people, played on a lot of people's recordings. He was famously one of the founding members of the Yardbirds in the mid-60s, which also spawned Eric Clapton and a young Jimmy Page. All three were famously from Surrey (Page I believe dated Beck's sister as a teen).

He was known for his love of the blues, sense of harmonics and virtuoso guitar work. He was idolized by a lot of guitar players who came up in the 70s/80s/90s, was featured more on the guitar fan magazines than on Rolling Stone, Spin or other mainstream entertainment magazines.

One of my favorite collabs of his was with Donny Osmond, of all people. It's a great tune and video from the mid-80s era.

Wow.

All respect to him. I admit I don't know much about his music but he was loved by other musicians.

by Anonymousreply 24January 11, 2023 11:09 PM

This is pretty cool snippet of him playing with Jagger, in the not-too-distant past. From Mick's tribute on Twitter:

Ron Wood's tribute. I had forgotten he was also in the Jeff Beck Group - there was huge overlap between that band and The Faces (which also included Rod Stewart):

I had no idea he did that song, r27.

by Anonymousreply 31January 11, 2023 11:38 PM

He also dated 60s supermodel Celia Hammond in the 70s though - hence the shit clothes.

I remember when he was in The Yardbirds.

by Anonymousreply 33January 12, 2023 12:01 AM

R30, yes, but in a very specific spindly, pretty rock-boy way. James Taylor is the exemplar of the type. You either love that type - as millions of teenage girls and gay men do - or not. To me, they look like they need to (a) eat something; (b) get a haircut; and (c) spend at least a few minutes a month at the gym.

It doesn't matter, though, because Beck was so influential that everybody has heard of him, whether you pay attention to rock or not. I (in the "not" category) couldn't tell you a thing about his music, but I know the name and know that he was widely esteemed by his colleagues.

by Anonymousreply 34January 12, 2023 12:01 AM
yes, but in a very specific spindly, pretty rock-boy way.

Only on DL could he be described as a pretty.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 35January 12, 2023 12:06 AM

Well, he was pretty in the pic R30 posted. I'm not the one who described Beck as "so fucking hot".

To each his own, though. Some of the men I think are hot would cause many DLers to have seizures and need sedation.

by Anonymousreply 36January 12, 2023 12:10 AM

Jeff was sort of pretty but hot in the 1960s -1970s. As if he were Mick Jagger's kid brother. With his pockmarked skin and angular features he was never going to age well.

Is that Helena Bonham Carter next to Beck in R39's photo?

by Anonymousreply 40January 12, 2023 12:48 AM
Is that Helena Bonham Carter next to Beck

I thought OMG Sigourney Weaver has really let herself go.

by Anonymousreply 41January 12, 2023 12:55 AM

it looks like Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders just fused into one person

by Anonymousreply 42January 12, 2023 12:58 AM

Fun fact: Michael McKean and Christopher Guest based their Spinal Tap characters (St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel) in part on Beck, style-wise and vocally. Beck always denied it however.

by Anonymousreply 43January 12, 2023 1:49 AM

So sad to see him go. Whatever the next level after guitar god is that’s what he was.

Sir Rod Stewart@rodstewart

He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond .Jeff, you were the greatest, my man . Thank you for everything RIP

How weird that no one really cares.

by Anonymousreply 46January 12, 2023 2:22 AM

99% of people couldn't name a single thing he does, they all just parrot "Omg, what an amazing guitarist."

by Anonymousreply 47January 12, 2023 2:23 AM

Smashing his guitar in "Blow-Up".

Beck’s biggest successes was in the ‘seventies (now truly a long time ago) with Blow by Blow (1973) and Wired (1974). Wired was a terrific example of jazz-rock fusion. The best track was a beautiful cover of “Goodbye Porkpie Hat”, Charles Mingus’s elegy for the great sax player Lester Young.

R48 Wow, that's some talent

by Anonymousreply 50January 12, 2023 2:31 AM

R49 Yawn

by Anonymousreply 51January 12, 2023 2:31 AM

Nose at R39 looks like a heavy drinker's nose (Beck's, not Depp's).

by Anonymousreply 52January 12, 2023 2:46 AM

R39, Johnny is a sinister satanist ! I’m dead serious. Wicked creep

by Anonymousreply 53January 12, 2023 3:08 AM

You could also say that Beck knew his time was nigh and wanted to go out with some fun and tour.

by Anonymousreply 54January 12, 2023 5:26 AM

depp on female hormones? he look like a old lady.

by Anonymousreply 55January 12, 2023 5:35 AM

No, R55, he's just fat.

Men with delicate features should never gain weight, the roundness exaggerates their natural androgyny and makes it downright feminine.

by Anonymousreply 56January 12, 2023 6:00 AM

he got big ole fat tittys too.....

by Anonymousreply 57January 12, 2023 6:03 AM

Amber said he like to have em sucked on.

by Anonymousreply 58January 12, 2023 6:03 AM

Is Depp transitioning? please tell me the qanon's are on the case!

by Anonymousreply 59January 12, 2023 7:42 AM
Depp, 59, "was by Jeff's bedside" along with "some other rock stars" before Beck's death.

I find this hard to believe.

by Anonymousreply 60January 12, 2023 8:58 AM

jeff was beloved by many, he was a real artist/craftsman and great guy....much respected and missed now.

by Anonymousreply 61January 12, 2023 9:42 AM

As if Johnny needed a reason to go on a bender. This will be one for the ages. Too bad he doesn't have the money anymore to shoot his ashes out of a cannon or whatever.

by Anonymousreply 62January 12, 2023 6:08 PM

I listened to his recent stuff at the Royal Albert Hall with Johnny Depp. His solos in 'Isolation' are sublime. Still busting it out at 78.

RIP, Jeff. You're a fucking legend.

by Anonymousreply 63January 12, 2023 6:20 PM
RIP, Jeff. You're a fucking legend.

Thank you, gurl.

by Anonymousreply 64January 12, 2023 7:27 PM

One of THE GREATEST guitarists of ALL time.

Thanks for all of the amazing music.

RIP, dear Sir.

by Anonymousreply 65January 12, 2023 7:50 PM

Looking back at his career it is amazing how he avoided all of the pitfalls that just about all of his peers fell prey to..... He never even made a disco single!

by Anonymousreply 66January 13, 2023 3:53 PM

R20, have you watched [italic]Casino[/italic]? When Ace is watching the card counters and figuring out their scheme, the soundtrack plays "Ain't Superstitious." with Rod Stewart singing and Beck on guitar.

by Anonymousreply 67January 15, 2023 5:53 AM

Yes, r52! Because the young Beck nose doesn't look like it would become so bulbous!

by Anonymousreply 68January 15, 2023 6:13 AM

Beck had a bulbous nose when he was 20 , it wasn't from drinking or aging.

by Anonymousreply 69January 15, 2023 12:25 PM

He survived all the idiots in the record industry for over 50 years......that alone.
