Why?

Eye damage from bright movie lights? Maybe they're transition lenses being set off by the studio lighting.

I used to when I was working. my eyes are so pale and light sensitive (gets worse as I get older) and the glare on paper, the computer screen, any flat surface makes me nauseated and gives me a 'pinch' headache between my eyes. I am practically blind outside in bright light (especially with snow) and overhead lights kill me.
Fortunately, I now wear transitions contact lenses that block uv and darken in light.

I have terrible eye problems, and indoor lighting can make me super dizzy. I wear tinted lenses in malls, etc. when I know there will be crappy fluorescent lighting.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 8, 2023 7:18 PM |
I was thinking they’d be great for working under fluorescent lighting glare in our public spaces. It’s hell.

I assume celebrities do this for medical to vanity reasons:
To hide their surgeries, funky moods, those paparazzi lenses and their drunken stupors.

Penny thought her under-eyes looked puffy.

When I started working at a prestigious entertainment firm in Beverly Hills, I was surprised to learn that my new office was in what I thought was a highly desirable corner office (I learned it was not wanted by anyone).
The entire room was made of glass, with views of Wilshire Boulevard and the rest of Los Angeles to the south. It shone with the intensity of a thousand suns all day. Because it was so bright, I got used to working with dark sunglasses on. To make matters worse, because I was on a low second floor, I had to deal with car headlights at night. As a result, I chose to wear those douchy yellow glasses that provided glare reduction at night. I sincerely despised my office and ended up working in the inner cubicles with all the admin gay guys and office Lolitas.

Bono wears them for medical reasons. but most celebrities who do do it to separate themselves from the rest of the public, whom they feel demand too much from them. It also shields them a bit like a mask so it makes it harder for them to be recognized.
Of course some people like Anna Wintour do it just to be pretentious. She's always been ridiculed by wearing sunglasses indoors to announce how important she is--she did it long before she became that famous of a cultural figure. (SPY Magazine used to make fun of her regularly for this, once saying the basic message of her entire career was: "If Si Newhouse [i.e. the publisher who hired her to helm Vogue] likes you enough, you can wear sunglasses indoors and no one will laugh at you.")

R10, that was my thought. Klieg lights, studio lights, and the continuously flashing lights of the paparazzi on the red carpet are so blindingly bright that transition lenses mistake the indoors or nighttime for daylight.

R20 has it Cate Blanchett is a perfect example

I think I may have said this one another thread where someone posted an interview with Penny Marshall - one of those Television Archive interviews. She wears dark glasses in the interview, but looks over them the entire time. What's the point?
