Mother of autistic son weighs in on lawsuit blaming Tylenol

Tens of thousands of mothers are suing the makers of Tylenol in a class-action lawsuit that claims its use during pregnancy led babies to be born with autism.

A study from the NIH found that pregnancy exposure to acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, may increase a child’s risk for autism and ADHD.

Karleen DeGroodt is among the mothers in the lawsuit and discussed her use of Tylenol during pregnancy and her son’s autism during an appearance on NewsNation’s “Prime.”

DeGroodt first started noticing that something was wrong with her son Devin when he was an infant.

“He never had really good eye contact,” she said. “So that was one of the first clues. From there it was developmental milestones that he just didn’t meet, including things like talking in general and just understanding. He was definitely trapped in his own bubble.”

DeGroodt said genetic testing did not show a family history or cause of her son’s condition.

“We’ve developed a good team to try to figure out not only why, but what can we do to help him,” she said. “Everything has come back with no potential cause.”

Looking at recent research, DeGroodt said her use of Tylenol could have potentially been the link to her son’s autism.

“As of right now,” she said, “it’s the only possible thing that we have that it could account for his having autism.

A growing body of research suggests heavy use of acetaminophen during pregnancy may cause autism and ADHD, according to reports.

One big supporter of this movement has been consumer advocate Erin Brockovich, who was on NewsNation recently discussing this issue.

“My work and working with these women is getting the voices of them and their concerns for their children heard when we have science, and it feels like it’s being suppressed or concealed once again,” Brockovich said.

Erin Brockovich helps pregnant women sue Tylenol DeGroodt said the lawsuit is “going to bring education to people so they can make the best choice for themselves.”

As a parent with a child with autism, DeGroodt said she went through a variety of emotions, “just like probably any parent who has a child who is disabled. There’s guilt there.”

“There was guilt there years ago before we even thought Tylenol or acetaminophen products could be a potential reason,” she said. “Yeah, looking back, I wish I knew. … Maybe I would have done things differently.”

DeGroodt said their fight is so important for many other families.

“At the end of the day, that’s all that this is about is potentially preventing this,” she said. “Educating people and seeing what we could do to make things better for these families.”

OMG these people are SO desperate to find someone else to blame for their kids being imperfect!

It couldn't possibly be their own gene pool or their own parenting, it HAS to be someone else's fault.

by Anonymousreply 1January 8, 2023 7:53 AM

Poor Tylenol. This one’ll be the killer that’ll do ‘‘em in!

by Anonymousreply 2January 8, 2023 8:00 AM

A woman I know has been claiming her son is autistic for twenty-five years (to me, he's nothing more than a screaming, dangerous, overgrown spoiled brat). She's blamed this dubious diagnosis on multiple things, but I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with the copious amounts of marijuana and alcohol she ingested while pregnant!

by Anonymousreply 3January 8, 2023 9:12 AM

Autism sounds so awful .

by Anonymousreply 4January 8, 2023 10:19 AM

Oh, so now it’s not the vaccines these people blamed for decades?

by Anonymousreply 5January 8, 2023 10:21 AM

It’s RETARDED, “autistic” just sounds better.

I’m sure that boxed wine, cigarettes and weed had NOTHING to do with it!

by Anonymousreply 6January 8, 2023 11:17 AM

There are plenty of autistic people who are socially but not at all intellectually impaired, R6. There are a lot of prominent and very successful people on the spectrum. A healthy number of people who've made zillions out of anything IT-related are on it.

by Anonymousreply 7January 8, 2023 11:33 AM

R7, most people with REAL autism are retarded. These people you are referring to are obsessed nerds with lousy social skills .

by Anonymousreply 8January 8, 2023 11:39 AM

LOL they are blaming Tylenol for two conditions- autism and ADD - which are basically the opposite of each other?

This is why no one takes women seriously!

by Anonymousreply 9January 8, 2023 11:51 AM

“heavy use of acetaminophen during pregnancy”

Wait so they admit to using it HEAVILY

Has anyone ever seen a pharmaceutical that said in its dosage USE HEAVILY

by Anonymousreply 10January 8, 2023 11:59 AM

67 YO here.

When I was a kid, we didn't have the word "autism." Back then, some kids were simply "retarded," or "slow," or a "holy terror," aka, "pain-in-the-ass."

That was our "spectrum."

Sure, blame it on acetaminophen. Why not? Beats accepting you bore a defective child.

by Anonymousreply 11January 8, 2023 12:09 PM

Why do you need to use Tylenol “heavily”? If it’s for pain, then you need to diagnose the cause if your pain and figure out a better way to treat it. If your problems are that serious, then getting pregnant is something you should avoid.

by Anonymousreply 12January 8, 2023 12:18 PM

It's very sad when parents flail around so publicly, desperate to pin their imperfect children on someone or something else. I've seen this in my own family and it never ends. Even when their positions are discredited, they remain skeptical while also moving right along and grasping at the next batch of straws. And sometimes their kids are more aware of it than they realize.

by Anonymousreply 13January 8, 2023 12:27 PM

It’s hard on the liver, Tylenol isn’t exactly side effect free. However, toxic torts seem to have trends.

by Anonymousreply 14January 8, 2023 12:32 PM

r7 This is DL. You're mostly talking to old people who were exposed to copious amounts of lead as children and can't be taught anything or reasoned with on this issue due to severe neurodegeneration and their own cognitive issues. Don't bother.

by Anonymousreply 15January 8, 2023 12:36 PM

[quote]67 YO here.

See?

by Anonymousreply 16January 8, 2023 12:38 PM

It's scary how many retarded children there are these days. I can't go anywhere without seeing one. Ghastly.

[quote] If it’s for pain, then you need to diagnose the cause if your pain and figure out a better way to treat it.

Surely you realize that pregnancy comes with numerous body aches and pains (back pain, headaches, leg pain, etc).

I can only imagine what drugs and substances most DLer's mothers ingested while pregnant considering they came up during a time when thalidomide was considered safe for pregnant women to treat morning sickness. It would certainly explain a lot.

Are these people claiming that it's Tylenol specifically or acetaminophen that caused this problem?

Frankly, ALL medications run the risks of complications, pregnant or otherwise. You may be one of the tiny percentage of people who have an adverse reaction.

Unless it was a KNOWN side effect that the drug company purposely hid or there were other illegal or unethical activities regarding the development of the drug, I cannot see how the company is to blame. What's the alternative, no acetaminophen for anyone?

It's sad, but unless there's something we don't know, I cannot see how a drug that's been on the market for 70-ish years could be the issue.

by Anonymousreply 19January 8, 2023 1:00 PM

Even Matthew Perry after downing fifty Vicondin wouldn’t have the guts to say “Should I not have hsed this heavily?”

by Anonymousreply 20January 8, 2023 1:03 PM

r19 Every box of Tylenol states: "If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before use." That's how they protect themselves. This is due to the fact that pregnant women have historically been excluded from drug trials. Doctors usually advise patients based on the most up to date scientific literature and research.

Being that most drug companies don't test their products on pregnant women due to ethical concerns, most physicians use their best judgment when advising their pregnant patients on what OTC drugs are safe to take during pregnancy. Their beef is with their physicians who didn't err on the side of caution by recommending more natural remedies to take to relieve pain while pregnant. Celery juice, for example, is a known analgesic that blocks pain due to its anti-inflammatory properties and high potassium content.

SHOCKING BIBLICAL REVELATION

God told Eve she COULD eat at the Tree of Knowledge, but just not to do it heavily.

by Anonymousreply 23January 8, 2023 1:30 PM

I’ll always support Tard Moms.

by Anonymousreply 24January 8, 2023 2:10 PM

I’m still going to say “Retarded” to those mothers especially when I get old and dottering. Right to their slack-jawed faces!

By the way, I have absolutely nothing against them, there’s a hawt autistic guy that lives next door to me that is an absolute dead ringer for Chris Evans.

Everything (but the way he walks.

by Anonymousreply 25January 8, 2023 2:43 PM

Considering the actual Chris Evans is on the spectrum, are you sure it isn’t him?

by Anonymousreply 26January 8, 2023 2:56 PM

It couldn't possibly be the crap that we're spewing into the environment. Hundreds of millions of tons of toxic pollutants in the last hundred years, repeatedly shown to impact the development and functioning of other species' brains, could in no way impact the development and functioning of human brains.

It must be vaccines, and now, analgesics!

by Anonymousreply 27January 8, 2023 3:30 PM

Any person who is even mildly interested in their health or having a healthy baby would know not to use Tylenol heavily. It's very hard on your liver.

While I wholly agree autism is over-diagnosed, the rise in severe autism cases also coincides with this spike in deadly peanut allergies and other conditions.

Yes, having children in later years than ever before is a risk, but I do believe there's something else going on.

by Anonymousreply 28January 8, 2023 3:40 PM

It’s all the psych meds and antidepressants that women are on today.

I get that it's not tested on pregnant women.

However, given how long it's been in use, you have to wonder how many pills these people were taking if they think it's because of the Tylenol. After all these decades of women, including pregnant women, taking the pills, there would have been some sign if casual or occasional use of small dosages caused a problem. Also, if it truly were the cause, then it wouldn't be a few people, but tens of thousands of people, given how often it's taken.

Logic suggests that these women must have been taking mega doses well-beyond the recommended amounts and durations if it did cause problems.

by Anonymousreply 31January 8, 2023 4:38 PM

Old person here, and I remember when a friend got pregnant around 1980, she refused to drink any alcohol or to take ANY medication. No aspirin or tylenol for a headache, not a sip of champagne or a breath of weed, she wasn't taking any chance. Her children turned out wonderfully, but then both she and her husband are admirable people and did the parenting thing right.

So I just wanted to point out that even forty years ago, eschewing all medications during pregnancy was a thing.

by Anonymousreply 32January 8, 2023 7:26 PM

R33, is a homophobic autistic cunt .

by Anonymousreply 35January 9, 2023 11:35 PM

Considering the number of men that suck dick, I'd say it's pretty much normal.

by Anonymousreply 36January 10, 2023 3:55 AM

[quote]So I just wanted to point out that even forty years ago, eschewing all medications during pregnancy was a thing.

It was even more a thing than it is now, in the wake of the Thalidomide disaster. Anyone who took drugs during pregnancy at that time either had very particular needs or was a deadbeat.

The amount of medical knowledge on this thread makes it sound like it comes from a Grade 8 class in the projects somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 37January 11, 2023 4:47 AM

I agree with R1.

by Anonymousreply 38January 11, 2023 5:05 AM

Poor retarded, r35.
