it all revolved around the scandal with the Vatican bank. Fraud, money laundering, etc. and the sex scandal uncovered by one of Benedict's subordinates. Benedict decided it was all too much for him to deal with and he decided it best that he quit. Who knows, maybe he was in on some or all of it and he was scared they were going to catch him, or someone told him if he didn't quit they would spill the beans about his involvement.

I believe that as pressure mounted about the sex scandals, and more and more information became public, and the lawsuits and settlements escalated, it became clear that he knew about a lot of that stuff and he protected certain clergy and he ignored stuff and it really did effect how he was perceived and the Church was damaged. I think he felt terrible about the whole situation but he believed he had erred on the side of compassion. He was very old school. You know, going back to the olden days of Thomas Becket and then later Henry the 8th, the Church and the state argued about who had jurisdiction to prosecute errant priests. I think the church really felt that they would handle it internally and actually withhold information from the state. Now their quaint ideas were bullshit in the light of day, because they were in effect aiding and abetting the sex crimes and concealing evidence and shielding criminal wrong doing. Anyway I think Benedict felt like he needed to remove himself.
