The Game (1997)

A suspense thriller directed by David Fincher, starring Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger and James Rebhorn. It tells the story of a wealthy investment banker who is given a mysterious gift by his brother—participation in a game that integrates in strange ways with his everyday life. As the lines between the banker's real life and the game become more uncertain, hints of a large conspiracy become apparent.

Wasn't this originally meant for Jodie Foster?

James Rebhorn is the only good thing about this mess.

This is a low-key favorite of mine. Fincher's most underrated film IMO.

At the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, PolyGram announced that Jodie Foster would star in the film with Douglas. However, Fincher was uncomfortable with putting an actor and movie star of her stature in a supporting part. After talking to her, he considered rewriting the character of Conrad as Nicholas' daughter so that Foster could play that role. However, Douglas didn't like the idea and requested it to change the character to his sister, which Foster found peculiar as Douglas is almost 20 years her senior and appeared with her in Napoleon and Samantha when Foster was 9 years old while Douglas was 28. Due to differences in opinions and scheduling conflicts with Robert Zemeckis' Contact, Foster could not appear in the film. Once she left, the role of Conrad was offered to Jeff Bridges, but he declined, and Sean Penn was cast

R6 Jodie would have been too rigid, Jeff & Michael together might have been interesting. I feel like Sean brought a coldness to the role. The movie is very cold.

R2 the roommate

R6 Michael was only 35 when the film was made, he’s only 35 now actually. I’m 17.

Yes. She was supposed to be his daughter but Douglas balked at playing dad to an adult.

With Carroll Baker as Ilsa. Is this the one where she cooks a roast?

I found that scene where the company spray-painted his house interior really too much. Maybe they used water-based paint that could easily wash off but still.

SPOILERS. I really wanted to enjoy the movie, but the ending...ugh. There were so many ways it could have gone wrong along the way, where the main character could have gotten seriously injured or killed. What if he jumped just a little different at the end, and hit the pavement instead of crashing through the glass roof? And I don't think I'd feel like partying if all my friends just saw me attempt suicide.

Another great yuppie horror film. A hallmark of these films is doing serious property damage (spray painting the house!) as this is indeed a huge horror for yuppies. Two other great films from this genre are The Money Pit and Pacific Heights.

The Money Pit would be a great film for a remake! I could personally consult on the script, as I live in a money pit and nearly became an alcoholic shut-in over the stress !
