Are Candy Stripers Still a Thing in Hospitals?

I was watching something on YouTube and one of the characters was a candy striper. Do these types of positions still exist?

I think they're called something else now & I don't believe the wander in & out of people's rooms anymore. I think they work in "guest services" - helping with parking questions, how to get from here to there, etc. Last time I spent any time in a hospital, it was mostly old people volunteers, not young people.

Hospitals today are different animals than when Candy Stripers were started.

Today hospitals, profit or non-profit, are parts of multi-billion dollar/year corporations. Anybody who "volunteers" for any of these outfits is out of their damned mind

Catholic high schools still make kids volunteer at hospitals. Boys too. They’re called volunteers now.

They were called volunteers in the 70s too, when I had to do it (Catholic school).

The staff at the hospitals seemed genuinely annoyed when you showed up because it was a pain being asked to delegate work to you.

My mother-in-law had been a candy striper as a young woman and enjoyed the experience. When my wife volunteered as a high school student in the early aughts, things were much different and she spent her days organizing old employee files for HR.

She later switched to volunteering at a nursing home, where she was allowed to interact with residents and help them with minor things (like reading to them or painting their nails).
