James Taylor is in great shape compared to her. He’s 5 years younger, but still… considering the monstrous heroin addiction that he somehow survived, it should have been the other way around.

r8 women that party hard for any extended time are less likely to make it to past their 60s.

male or female, even if they've quit the damage done usually starts showing up by 50. If they don't and say started in their teens or earlier, we usually start seeing signs of internal damage by 30.

in part, why you see more male old homeless addicts than female... and of course, other factors come into play but the biological differences are no joke... in general, women are more prone to become addicts/alcoholics as they have a harder time discoveirng their limits, often when young they view blacking out or vomiting is the limit and so, this leading to greater possibility of overdosing. . . often in competition with the people around them. We got a lot of math here for bmi + activities, then life sciences so, male or female, the more petite you are, the greater chance for serious longterm damage. (though, fatties, you're as much at risk as well.)

they you've got lifestyle and fitness, given that women are less likely to workout to build/maintain muscle (while it's slowly changing, a lot of women are still afraid that anything other than cardio is going to give them man body) or do manual labor, so more prone to early muscle wasting (or obesity ) and more prone to fasting, cleanses and crash dieting leading to a variety of complications and possible disorders.

in average, fit, healthy people - females do the most damage in their 20s, males in their 30s... now they can be prodigy and start younger, but in general men need to quit partying within their late twenties to early thirties, women within in their early to mid twenties. ladies, that's your gift for physically maturing faster. Individual bio makeup may vary.

both ashkenazi and cuban have their own set of competing issues... more so from her generation and prior.

and those with starvation based eating disorders, has a long list of complications... even if recovered, they're more prone to sudden death (any number of reasons.. often related to previous stress damage) as well as early onset dementia and alzheimer's, and a host of neurological, motor control and autoimmune complications.

And just general mental health (she's been open about having severe anxiety; which can develop into heart related issues, but specifically stress.) and the celebrity lifestyle (high level stress.. stress itself is difficult for most people to manage and can cause massive physical damage to the body in varying ways)

She stayed youthful for so long, finally she is looking her age. She has some good songs. I loved her with James Taylor and I don't think she ever really got over him.

by Anonymousreply 13December 31, 2022 11:59 AM

r11 unknown but most of her family is dead (siblings, obviously parents, uncles. Two of her sisters died earlier this year. ), friends (peers), too. She's had lifelong struggles with drugs (social and prone to relationships with men that do, too), While the eating disorder is still in the unofficial category save we've all seen her looking unhealthy and far too thin when she's already thin (it's miracle she was able to go through a pregnancy and more than once.). The anxiety. Also, old, frail, dames tend to look freakish... her features were always exaggerated with prominent bone, now her face shows she's likely had some cosmetic work or treatments.. you're looking at an old leathery hide pulled back. It's a bit Gina Davis in Beetlejuice.

if I had to guess.. I'd likely think heart issues, I wouldn't be surprised if she has to use oxygen daily or especially with movement. It's also likely she has tardive dyskinesia. As to other issues, I really couldn't say.

Wow I didn’t have any sense of her condition. Are we sure this is actually Simon?

I pictured her like my mom, older but sharp and spry. But reading this thread, seeing comments about eating disorders, anxiety and drugs (?). I pictured Simon as part of the artistic and intellectual cognoscenti, because she moved in really exclusive circles on Martha’s Vineyard and in the upper East side in NYC. On the Vineyard, she lived near William and Rose Styron, Lillian Hellman and Peter Feibleman, John Hersey, Jackie Onassis, Mike Nichols & Diane Sawyer.

This was a really slick and exclusive crowd that thinned out gradually in the 1980’s. I knew some affiliates and it looked like a really famous but also messy and complex social environment.

I think she is in her late 70s. Her expressions and movement suggest dementia- hope not. Old age is a bitch. Some fade fast while others hang on mentally and physically far past late 70s. She’s had a pretty tough year. At least she seems happy here.

by Anonymousreply 38December 31, 2022 1:24 PM

She had some pretty amazing songs. “You Belong to Me” got a ton of airplay when I was a kid, and of course “You’re so Vain”. The theme from the film Working Girl may have charted, too. That song is very anthemic, but listing today sounds a little cheesy.

She is a great talent, but was maybe born on third base at a high period of publishing (Simon & Schuster). That period of peak fame with James Taylor might have been a rough slog, with drugs and fame and jealousy and insecurity. It’s like she flew close to the sun, and got scorched. In the 90’s we shared a close friend. I never met or knew her, but I got a sense that her world was a huge mess of complexity.

by Anonymousreply 42December 31, 2022 2:51 PM

^^ooh, shit, that’s meant to spell “listening today”.

by Anonymousreply 43December 31, 2022 2:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 44December 31, 2022 2:55 PM

R40 Warren it’s a little shocking that she was able to reproduce that sound live in that cool clip. I don’t think many performers then or now we’re able to do that.

She is surrounded by excellent musicians in that video. I think it was a fundraiser on The Vineyard. It’s a pleasure to watch.

by Anonymousreply 45December 31, 2022 2:57 PM

I forgot how beautiful she was at the peak of her fame. That hugely expressive face, slim frame, gorgeous voice and “presence”. I think she was a stutterer and sang as a means to develop fluency in her communication. I may be misremembering that, though. Her smile was about a yard wide.

by Anonymousreply 46December 31, 2022 3:01 PM

I think that opening base line of “You Belong to Me” is one of a handful that stand out as really memorable. I’d be interested to learn which hits have the most striking and memorable opening notes or sound. Blondie’s “One Way or Another” is a good example, also “Atomic”.

by Anonymousreply 47December 31, 2022 3:07 PM

It’s surprising how many hits she had. She was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

by Anonymousreply 106January 11, 2023 6:30 PM

For years, Simon said she was born on June 25, 1946. However, in the past year, it was confirmed she was born on June 25, 1943 - so she will be 80 this year, not 77.

She had breast cancer in 1998-99, when she was 55, not sure about any other times after that. I never ever heard she had a drug problem like other singers have had.

I think she's morphing into Joni Mitchell these days, who is the same age as Carly. Her hair is way too light for her pale skin, and her face lift is horrible. Who thought it was a good idea to give her the "Lily Tomlin" - stretch out and elongate your face ?

Her music catalog is one to envy - she has written most of the songs she has recorded over the past 50 years.

Carly was my babysitter when she was at Sarah Lawrence. I'm now 71. She was at least 6 or7 years older than me.

And it was Warren Beatty who was so vain. She didn't tell me that, but the guy who wrote the song with her (her usual song writer whom she seldom gave full credit to ) told me. It was definitely Warren. But saying all the others was more fun, later....

In the "Girls Like Us" book (about Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon), towards the end the author talks about Joni and Carly going to dinner as older women. Joni said something like "I never knew she was so nice!" And she also got the impression that Carly hadn't ever fully gotten over James Taylor.

The only thing I remember Joni criticizing Carly about was her showing too much skin on an album cover (probably the "Playing Possum" album). She didn't like women using their sexuality to sell records. She lit into Linda Ronstadt about this as well (and later, Madonna).

It wouldn't surprise me if she ragged on Carly's music, though. She absolutely hated being lumped in with all the other women of her era, or being compared to them in any way. The one I recall that truly pissed her off, though, was Rickie Lee Jones.

by Anonymousreply 116January 15, 2023 2:28 AM

Yes I was about 12. And a rambunctious kid whom my parents knew better than to leave alone.

My family had connections to the Simon family which is why Carly was my baby sitter. It was Joanna, however, that my family knew well. She was always very sweet to me and, well, enormous. Despite her kindness I was scared of her. Carly was also tall but not as intimidating.

Jacob Brackman was the songwriter, btw. Oddly, despite the fact Carly used to be quite open about his writing the lyrics, she stopped being so,.

by Anonymousreply 118January 15, 2023 3:11 AM

If Joni Mitchell hated when female singers used sexuality on their album covers to sell records, she must've hated Donna Summer's tactics. It doesn't get more 'sexual' than her 'Bad Girls' album with Summer dressed as a street hooker.

I have always loved the song. " That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should be." To me it's a very accurate description of marriage and having children. I only find out a few years ago that Mick Jagger sang backup vocals on You're So Vain. It made me laugh because you know he thought that song was about him, 😂. ( I believe it was about Warren Beatty but that is only my guess. No one knows except Carly and she ain't telling. )
