What a dumpy place. Void of any charm! Ugly “Main Street” with run-down strip malls and architecturally charmless buildings. Cinder block ranch houses. Past-their-prime Midwestern queens in short shorts, tank tops and Hawaiian shirts. Absolutely nothing upscale about it. If you are thinking of going there this winter for vacation, don’t waste your time.
Wilton Manors

I've been there twice, because my mom now lives in FL. I had fun both times, but there were also big events going on, so that main street was closed for booths, etc. It was a blast, and the people were quite nice. I'm not sure what you'd expect, OP. Are you a great big fat person, because I saw tons of those and they were friendly as well.

As. Friend who was just in Florida during a stretch of bad weather said, you strip away the weather and the state is a shithole.

My knowledge is limited to armchair real estate searches and Google streetview explorations, so take that for what little it's worth, but I have to agree, OP, at least on the ugliness of the infrastructure (Google Maps kindly blurs the humans.)
I wasn't expecting a rich sampling of Addison Mizner architecture and smart shops, but goddamn, it's an ugly place. Ugly houses with the rarest of exception and charmless as can be. Some landscaping, for fuck;s sake, disguises a lot of ugliness in a building.
This house for instance...

Or spend twice as much and get a 'forecourt' of pea gravel and concrete pavers and the same ugly flooring inside as though a dog scooched its diry ass along every tile 'floorboard.'
It's an ugly place

Couldn’t agree more. It’s a paved over gay bunker. A gunker. Was so disappointed when I went there. I guess even the gays are powerless against the Florida-ness of it all.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 30, 2022 11:22 AM |
I guess it’s nice to have a gay enclave but considering it’s gays in charge you’d think it would be at least pretty. It’s horrible

The sunbelt = 🤢

“Wilton Manors” always sounds to me like the name of a Britcom about a rundown retirement home in England, as in the show “Waiting For God.”
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 30, 2022 7:40 PM |
Palm Springs is 100 times nicer.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 30, 2022 8:41 PM |
R3 I agree. That is 700k?! It is completely devoid of any style, inside and out. All lighting is recessed. No trims or finishes of any kind, save for the "marble" showers with noticeably cheap fixtures.
R4s is a smidge better. At least they staged it with furniture, r3's listing looks desolate by comparison. Also, r4's listing has more styling, however cheap. In the dining room there's the built-in buffet with a stone wall above and some small shuttered windows. There's also a ceiling fixture! At least they put in some effort.

Yes, R7, I wasn't expecting too much, but I was expecting something from a place that was one of the gayest places in the U.S., but it's just a low-end organic retirement community with too little landscaping to hide the shame 9f dumpy architecture. Different people like different things, but it's not remotely for me.

I always have wanted first to read its name as "Wilted Manners." And I WILL, dammit! :D

On the good side, the meth is widely available (and used).

R12 You bumped the thread for that comment? Poor thing.

You can always find great deals on "gently loved" white Bostonians; so, there is always a bright side, if you're willing to look for it.

Wilton Manors was basically a blue collar neighborhood that the gays glamorized with their landscaping and interior decoration.

Why would anyone want to live in a Gay Ghetto?

Glamorized? If so, that's the saddest, most half-assed Home Depot overstock sale effort ever. As though the mayor awarded the decorating committee of the whole town $99 and a can of Cheese-Wiz.

R20 agreed! Oakland Park is the alternative to Wilton Manors.

Which is best: Wilton Manors, Palm Springs, Provincetown or Fire Island?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 2, 2023 10:42 AM |
Best is Naples, Fl which is on the western side of Florida

The Villages for gays.

Naples is a Republican mecca.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 2, 2023 4:29 PM |
St. Petersburg is the better alternative.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 2, 2023 4:39 PM |
It’s Florida afterall. And yes, St Petersburg seems to be the new place for gays
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 2, 2023 4:43 PM |
I know Fort Lauderdale isn't the cheapest part of the state, but Florida used to be somewhat affordable. Those properties are quite high compared to a couple years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 2, 2023 4:44 PM |
It’s Florida. It’s all variations on shithole.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 2, 2023 4:44 PM |
Wilton Manor is a gay ghetto. There are bars and a few decent restaurants on the main drag, and neighborhoods (of very mixed quality) surrounding Wilton Dr. If being surrounded by other gay men is important to you, Wilton Manor is for you. But if you are looking for a nice place to live, there are also a number of nicer towns nearby.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 2, 2023 4:51 PM |
Victoria Park is the nicest gay neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale, but it doesn’t have a lot of restaurants or bars… it’s almost purely residential. But less than 10-minutes from beach and about 15-minutes to the Wilton Manors ghetto whenever in the mood for all that.

I’ve had my ass fucked many a time at Pineapple Point which is in Victoria Park.
