As Late-Night Prepares For Major Overhaul, What Does 2023 Look Like For Evening Talkers?

Late-night television is going through a moment.

by Anonymousreply 81December 29, 2022 11:35 PM

A lot of those people need to just go and retire.

by Anonymousreply 1December 28, 2022 3:14 AM

Who actually watches this shit?

by Anonymousreply 2December 28, 2022 3:16 AM

The late night talk show is so outdated, just like SNL.

by Anonymousreply 3December 28, 2022 3:16 AM

Ugh, Chelsea Handler has the irritating ambition and utter lack of self-awareness that can only come from being 74 with no spouse or children.

Kids will call you on your bullshit, and make you feel old and tired. A spouse will do that even faster, but also force you to stay on your toes and try new things. When all you have is yourself, a mirror, and a bright fucking stage light, you never learn anything and just keep coasting on whatever talent you thought you had.

by Anonymousreply 4December 28, 2022 3:29 AM

[Quote]Who actually watches this shit?

people without cable, satellite, streaming services or internet

by Anonymousreply 5December 28, 2022 3:39 AM

I still like Stephen Colbert. I don't watch his show every night but when I do, he can still be entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 6December 28, 2022 3:45 AM

Yep, r6, I'm fine as long as I have Colbert.

by Anonymousreply 7December 28, 2022 3:58 AM

Colbert and Kimmel are fine. The others can all go.

by Anonymousreply 8December 28, 2022 4:17 AM

I don't watch any of them live, but I will watch clips of Colbert and Seth on YouTube.

Honestly I would miss them if they were no longer doing shows.

by Anonymousreply 9December 28, 2022 4:26 AM

R2 I don't watch it. I put it in the toilet.

by Anonymousreply 10December 28, 2022 4:34 AM

I always watch Steven Colbert's monologue but not always the celebrity guests.

by Anonymousreply 11December 28, 2022 4:37 AM

Gutfeld! Is the top show now. It's a great show!

by Anonymousreply 12December 28, 2022 4:39 AM

Are you sure it's the top show, r12? That seems unlikely...

by Anonymousreply 13December 28, 2022 4:40 AM

[quote]Who actually watches this shit?

Old people.

by Anonymousreply 14December 28, 2022 4:41 AM

Yes.

Carson used to get more viewers than Kimmel, Fallon, and Colbert combined.

by Anonymousreply 16December 28, 2022 5:04 AM

"The biggest comedy show on late-night right now is not on ABC or NBC or CBS or Fox. It’s not on Comedy Central. It’s certainly not streaming. It’s on Fox News, and its name is Gutfeld!"

All the other shows have been complete clones of each other since 2015. Totally interchangeable hosts, jokes, guests, and point of view

by Anonymousreply 17December 28, 2022 5:04 AM

I really do hope they go with Roy and Desi as the new co-anchors of the Daily Show.

by Anonymousreply 18December 28, 2022 5:11 AM

Wow, r15 and r17.

by Anonymousreply 19December 28, 2022 5:13 AM

This is amazing from r17's link

"With 2.494 million total viewers and 396,000 viewers in the key demographic group of adults 25-54, Gutfeld! beat not just everything else on cable, but the high-profile broadcast networks’ late night shows as well. CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was a close second with 2.1 million viewers and 375,000 viewers in the key demo, followed by NBC’s The Tonight Show (1.289 million viewers and 318,000 in the demo), and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live (1.285 million total viewers and 287,000 viewers in the key demo)."

by Anonymousreply 20December 28, 2022 5:15 AM

Fallon is too puerile; Kimmel is too mean; Corden is too gushy; Colbert is too manic; Handler is too stupid... I can't stand any of them.

by Anonymousreply 21December 28, 2022 5:20 AM

I like Kimmel, Seth, and Colbert. But I only watch clips.

by Anonymousreply 22December 28, 2022 5:49 AM

Corden was great in Gavin and Stacey and in The Wrong Mans [sic]. It's a shame he got on late night and we all had to 'get to know' him to be a twat. I wish he'd just stayed an actor. He's ruined both those shows for me now.

by Anonymousreply 23December 28, 2022 5:52 AM

R12, Gutfield WISHES he was funny.

by Anonymousreply 24December 28, 2022 6:07 AM

It's not so much him but his guests r24. The format is informal, and fun. They don't pull punches or obscure facts. It's a really fun show.

by Anonymousreply 25December 28, 2022 8:46 AM

Because of this thread I've just watched about 3 episodes on yt, never having seen it before. Not bad. Somewhat refreshing. Free-wheeling. I like Tyrus. Cat is whipsmart. Greg is annoying, but not incredibly. I think he pings. A decent mix.

by Anonymousreply 26December 28, 2022 8:55 AM

What the hell are you talking about R26? Did you fall down on the ground and hit your fucking head?

And no that sack of shit Gutfield doesn't ping and we wouldn't want him even if he did.

by Anonymousreply 27December 28, 2022 8:59 AM

I don't know, imbecile r27. Maybe I just do what I want, whenever the fuck I like?

I enjoyed it well enough. And Greg certainly DOES ping, liar.

by Anonymousreply 28December 28, 2022 9:02 AM

The only one I watch regularly is Seth Myers. I love his brand of wry humor. And he's so quick off the cuff. His A Closer Look got me through Trump.

I like Colbert, but his smugness gets on my nerves too often. Kimmel is funny enough and I do watch him from time to time. Fallon can die in our next grease fire.

by Anonymousreply 29December 28, 2022 9:04 AM

Gutfeld, Dorothy, Gutfeld. He’s Jewish isn’t he?

by Anonymousreply 30December 28, 2022 9:07 AM

Been looking him up. He's not only Jewish but also formerly an editor of Men's magazines, including UK ones.

PINGGGINGGGGGGG!

by Anonymousreply 31December 28, 2022 9:13 AM

I want Sarah Silverman - or Rosie O'Donnell.

by Anonymousreply 32December 28, 2022 9:52 AM

I have never watched a Late Night Show - nor a Morning or Breakfast show, I don’t think. The clips, sure. But I don’t see the appeal.

I’d rather watch the news or one of my shows in the DVR or a movie.

Breakfast TV like GMA is weird to me, I’m too busy racing around in the morning or if not I sleep.

by Anonymousreply 33December 28, 2022 10:11 AM

Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata (besties in real life) would make a great late night duo. They could be like Johnny and Ed McMahon.

Nicole is a bigger star, but she's also loud and a very strong spice. Sasheer is calm but has a sharp dry sense of humor. Maybe Sasheer is the main host (trusted to do interviews and monologues), but Nicole sits beside her and makes the audience roar with her hot nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 34December 28, 2022 2:43 PM

Every network is scrambling to hire the next host - must be black and preferably female.

by Anonymousreply 35December 28, 2022 3:11 PM

That "Gutfield" show is obnoxious garbage. It comes across as a bunch of aging frat boys trying desperately to be funny but failing miserably.

by Anonymousreply 36December 28, 2022 3:30 PM

I don’t at all pay mind to these things, but I was under my own misinterterested impression that Gutfield was that gay as anything fellow who used to walk the red carpet then dish sass for Joan Rivers on E! Oh, well, live and learn.

by Anonymousreply 37December 28, 2022 3:46 PM

[Quote]That "Gutfield" show is obnoxious garbage. It comes across as a bunch of aging frat boys trying desperately to be funny but failing miserably.

The same could be said of all the late nite white males: Corden, Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert and Meyers

by Anonymousreply 38December 28, 2022 4:11 PM

I loathe Fallon. LOATHE.

by Anonymousreply 39December 28, 2022 4:21 PM

When Greg Gutfeld was editor of Men's Health, eons ago, he definitely did ping and he was unmarried for a long time. Then later I decided he was an incel type. Then he finally got married. But it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's fooled around with guys.

The thing you have to remember about Fox ratings is it includes lots and lots of people who keep their TVs on all day tuned to Fox but aren't actually watching it.

by Anonymousreply 40December 28, 2022 4:24 PM

Shut up and suck my pussy!

by Anonymousreply 41December 28, 2022 4:25 PM

I have no idea who Amber Ruffin is.

by Anonymousreply 42December 28, 2022 4:44 PM

No appeal in late night shows anymore. It’s a 20th Century model much like awards shows. With celebrities posting on Instagram and Twitter nonstop, there is really no interest in seeing them promote their below average movies on late night shows. Late night has also gotten too political. It’s just not what it used to be. Too many alternatives out there.

Mennonites?

by Anonymousreply 44December 28, 2022 4:50 PM

[quote]Carson used to get more viewers than Kimmel, Fallon, and Colbert combined.

Because there were only three networks, nothing else was on at that hour, and there was no internet.

by Anonymousreply 45December 28, 2022 4:55 PM

[quote] Every network is scrambling to hire the next host - must be black and preferably female.

Wanda Sykes!

Or maybe Whoopi? I haven't kept up with her latest controversy. Poor Wendy is... well, over I think.

by Anonymousreply 46December 28, 2022 8:19 PM

[quote]The only one I watch regularly is Seth Myers. I love his brand of wry humor. And he's so quick off the cuff. His A Closer Look got me through Trump. I agree with all that R29. I think the games get Fallon through. I absolutely agree Kimmel's funniest, though Colbert has finally settled down a bit and I like his biting commentary when things are going bad (re DJT)

I miss Craig Ferguson so much - he was so quick and quirky. Especially when he did the impersonation skits - his Prince Charles' Rather Late Show, where he wore enormous ears and huge buck teeth. He also dressed as J. K. Rowling and came out throwing wads of dollars bills around like confetti. Oh and the skeleton and the horse... such good times.

by Anonymousreply 47December 28, 2022 8:28 PM

When chat shows took over daytime, I read that they're so much cheaper than creating new dramas or comedies, which they have to do in primetime.

They can't compete with Netflix and the other streamers for drama anyway, over all, but they have those hours to fill - so what else? Reruns aren't what they used to be because you can find whatever you want elsewhere. I can't think what else they'd do except put up a test pattern and go off air a few hours. And I don't think the ratings are so bad that they need to do that. Yet.

by Anonymousreply 48December 28, 2022 8:32 PM

Why won't Jon Stewart come back? Isn't he a producer on Colbert's show? So it's not like he doesn't want to work. Even if just weekly - like John Oliver. He's already got the name recognition that might bring in the viewers. When the R's take over the House soon, you know there will be plenty material.

by Anonymousreply 49December 28, 2022 8:35 PM

The time is finally ripe for a “Pink Lady & Jeff” for late night. Of course Jeff could be Tig Notaro, or Mindy Kaling. And Pink Lady would be two clueless non-English understanding Korean boys for musical and comedy relief.

by Anonymousreply 50December 28, 2022 8:42 PM

R49, he technically is back. On Apple +. It's just no one's watching.

by Anonymousreply 51December 28, 2022 8:52 PM

I am gobsmacked that this “Gutfeld” character is not Ross Matthews!

by Anonymousreply 52December 28, 2022 8:52 PM

R51 OMG how many streaming services do I have to get to watch one show? And I had no idea he was doing anything with Apple+

I've especially been trying to cut back on that crap and get an expensive subscription to The Economist. $25 a month! But the absolute best for details about world events.

Has there been a thread on Datalounge about it? (if so, it didn't happen)

by Anonymousreply 53December 28, 2022 8:54 PM

Remember when JimmyFallon deep throated Donald Trump on air prior to the 2016 election and giggled like a twelve year old girl throughout?

by Anonymousreply 54December 28, 2022 8:55 PM

Why is there love for Wanda Sykes? She is charm-free and would be a disaster with a talk show.

by Anonymousreply 55December 28, 2022 9:04 PM

I love Stephen Colbert, but The Colbert Report was so much better, ingenious really. I really wish THAT show was still on.

by Anonymousreply 56December 28, 2022 9:06 PM

[quote] Why won't Jon Stewart come back?

He has a show on Apple TV. He’s turned into an insufferable SJW. I never found him funny to begin with. However, I do give him credit for going before Congress and trying to help victims.

by Anonymousreply 57December 28, 2022 9:08 PM

I think we're coming to the end of the era of $1mm per episode paydays for actors in comedies and shows like Grey's Anatomy.

The economics of network tv series simply aren't sustainable for most shows if you're paying supporting actors $50K per episode for 22 episodes, let alone $100-200K per episode or more for stars.

I wonder what Corden is planning on doing - and whether it really was his idea to quit or whether they simply wouldn't meet his demands and he walked. In 2018, he was reportedly paid $15mm, rising each year by about $5mm to $36mm in 2022. I doubt that people will be paid that much in the future for network shows. He seems to be getting a lot of movie roles for some unfathomable reason.

by Anonymousreply 58December 28, 2022 9:41 PM

I can't watch anything if James Corden is in it, he's so thoroughly annoying.

by Anonymousreply 59December 28, 2022 9:44 PM

It's a new generation, with a new explanation. People in motion. Networks will probably offer Tim Allen, Arsenio Hall, George Lopez and Ken Jeong.

by Anonymousreply 60December 28, 2022 9:55 PM

[quote] Why won't Jon Stewart come back?

Leibowitz?

We have had sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 61December 28, 2022 9:58 PM

I don’t want Rosie O. to have her own show but I DO think she should be a regular fill-in host.

I love Seth, and like Colbert and Kimmel. But I only watch clips on YouTube. If I’m watching tv that late at night I’m usually bingeing something.

I think Tracee Ellis Ross would make a great host.

by Anonymousreply 62December 28, 2022 10:26 PM

Anything on TCM is better than most of those late-night shows.

by Anonymousreply 63December 28, 2022 10:37 PM

[quote] you have to remember about Fox ratings is it includes lots and lots of people who keep their TVs on all day tuned to Fox but aren't actually watching it.

It was CNN who purchased exclusive contracts with the nation's airports to be shown 24 hours a day

by Anonymousreply 64December 29, 2022 3:51 AM

As long as Craig Ferguson still has his show, I'm good.

by Anonymousreply 65December 29, 2022 3:54 AM

It's on at 10pm r40. 11pm Eastern.

by Anonymousreply 66December 29, 2022 5:51 AM

R65 I apologize if I should have found it, but I looked and couldn't. Does Craig have a show? (I did see he toured America - he was riding with a Czech guy from New York City to Detroit, and he'd been in Boston etc. - and he'd also done a show in New Orleans a month before which I missed dammit. I did see his standup show in Biloxi Mississippi years ago at a casino)

I wonder why he bothers to do road trips and standups in America? He must have enough money to just hunker down happily in Glasgow and maybe do UK shows or tours. Not that I'm complaining but it just seems weird to do such a hard job. (Also, Tim Minchin's touring too - love him because I love all 'out' atheists who are willing to do appearances in Saudi America.

by Anonymousreply 67December 29, 2022 6:11 AM

Who wants to tell R65.

by Anonymousreply 68December 29, 2022 7:50 AM

It'd be a shame if Seth did take over SNL, I enjoy him as a 'performer' - Corrections is consistently hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 69December 29, 2022 12:15 PM

[quote]As long as Craig Ferguson still has his show, I'm good.

He doesn’t.

by Anonymousreply 70December 29, 2022 12:28 PM

Jimmy Fallon is the Ellen of Late Night.

by Anonymousreply 71December 29, 2022 12:29 PM

Liza should have a talk show! Now THAT shit would have ratings through the roof!

by Anonymousreply 72December 29, 2022 12:30 PM

[quote]When Greg Gutfeld was editor of Men's Health.

A huge number of the guys who were on the cover of that magazine were gay pron actors and escorts. The photo shoots and styling were about as gay as it comes.

I would be stunned if Greg Gutfeld was NOT gay.

by Anonymousreply 73December 29, 2022 1:27 PM

Everyone watched Johnny Carson in the 70s and 80s. He made stars.

Late night TV is not like that anymore. Things go viral and memes are created, but people don’t stay up to watch like they did with Johnny Carson.

It’s like going to the movies. Super hero movies make money… but the days of something like “Annie Hall” or “Julia” being box office hits are O.V.E.R

by Anonymousreply 74December 29, 2022 1:31 PM

Greg Gutfeld has always made coy jokes about being gay on shows like The Five.

by Anonymousreply 75December 29, 2022 3:09 PM

What is up with all the posters (like R4) who lately have been shaming women for not having kids. This is a gay board where 95 percent of the users don't have kids themselves.

Chelsea may not be married, but she's had a few partners. Like many people here.

by Anonymousreply 76December 29, 2022 3:26 PM

R76 Because "not having kids" is a big fucking part of Chelsea Handjob's entire schtick. She brings it up all the time, much more so than her audience would.
