Which movies could Cher have starred in?

One of the things I love about Cher is how she always proves her nasty critics wrong. She's been written off as passe so many times but always comes back just as strong. At this point, she's national treasure material. In her prime years (let's say 1980-90), which movies could she have starred in?

by Anonymousreply 109February 13, 2024 3:09 AM

Crimes of the Heart.

by Anonymousreply 1December 26, 2022 7:13 PM

Cher was very good at down to earth, hometown girl type characters.

So I'd agree with Crimes of the Heart. Despite her glam stage persona, she doesn't carry off "glam" or campy movie characters easily.

The thought of Cher in virtually any of the films OP listed is hilarious. Having seen her on stage in Come back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean I would agree that she could probably have done Crimes of the Heart.

"9 to 5" taking Lily Tomlin's place.

I would have love to see her do The Morning After. That would have been quite a stretch but she could have pulled it off.

Cher would be thoroughly wrong casting as someone who was going to be the next Vera Miles

9 to 5 seems like the only logical choice and obviously she'd take Tomlin's role, but could she have done a better job than Tomlin? Not so sure.

by Anonymousreply 16December 27, 2022 12:38 AM

It was down to Cher or Whoopie Goldberg for The Color Purple. Many insiders trashed Spielberg for taking the easy way out.

by Anonymousreply 17December 27, 2022 1:25 AM

She was all ready to be Fame’s Coco until notices for The Wiz slammed Diana Ross for stealing the role of an ingénue after which Cher was unceremoniously scratched.

by Anonymousreply 18December 27, 2022 1:32 AM

To think Cher was thisclose to getting 'Lady Sings The Blues' until Ross stole it from her. She would have made a great Lady Day.

by Anonymousreply 19December 27, 2022 3:21 AM

Private Benjamin was made before Cher's rebirth as an actress.

by Anonymousreply 20December 27, 2022 3:30 AM

In all honesty, Cher should have been given the lead in many if not all of the musicals of the past forty years. This aside, she showed tremendous flair for comedy and could easily have fielded some of those decade's biggest hits like 'Splash', 'When Harry Met Sally'. or 'Pretty Woman'. I can also see her making Anjelica Huston completely unnecessary as well.

by Anonymousreply 21December 27, 2022 3:47 AM

Cher was a bit mature to be a Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 22December 27, 2022 3:50 AM

She passed on the role of Morticia in Adams Family.

Peter Bogdanovich said she wasn't a great actress and he had to craft her performance through editing so it was watchable. He's one of the few people with the technical mastery to make a shitty comment like that and you have to take his word for it.

Cher is dyslexic. She can't read. To be a working actress, you have to read or you have to have someone read to you. She did neither. And when she would circle a project, she was a contractual nightmare. What director or producer wants to spend 4-6 months in negotiations when the contract is so onerous that it fucks with filming and reshoots because she had so much else going on?

by Anonymousreply 26December 27, 2022 8:11 AM

How could she had done the stage play Jimmy Dean if she couldn't read or be able to remember lines?

Cher turned down the Sarandon part in "Thelma and Louise." She would have been great. Peter Bogdanovich made 4 good movies in a 50 year career, so who cares about the bullshit that came out of his mouth?

by Anonymousreply 31December 27, 2022 12:17 PM

Thelma and Louise sounds like two KICK ASS black women.

by Anonymousreply 32December 27, 2022 1:39 PM

Cher was offered the Broadway role of 'Sunset Boulevard' when Buckley was leaving in 1996. ALW really wanted her to take the role - knowing what she would do for his box office; she had such great demands they ended negotiations quickly (she later said, 'He couldn't afford me').

He then offered her the role in his movie version in the early 2000s - she was interested (she said) but it was another dead end for both of them.

I always wish she had done more comedy even though I voted for "Peggy Sue Got Married" (she would have knocked the famous scene where Peggy Sue speaks to her long-dead grandmother on the phone absolutely out of the park). She has that wonderful deadpan delivery with great timing.

In 1990, she auditioned for 'The Prince of Tides' but Streisand said she didn't look 'Jewish enough to play Sue Lowenstein'. Cher said she really wanted to star in this movie, so she was willing to audition for Tom Wingo, but Streisand had already cast Nick Nolte. "Can I audition to play your son Bernard ?" she begged. "Ooops...my fegulah son Jason has that role," Streisand responded.

Yes, and Streisand was going to direct 'Mame'. Then Jerry Herman put the kabosh on it, saying he was planning a B'way revival in 2003 starring Michele Lee. That never happened.

As for Dolly, I never heard about 'Annie Get Your Gun'. I know Herman was planning a revival of 'Hello Dolly', too, in 2005-06 and wanted DP to star in it, but again - nothing happened for another decade.

by Anonymousreply 70December 30, 2022 3:26 PM

Someone asked about the "cher can't read" comment. I didnt mean she cant read like she's a complete illiterate. I meant the written word is a struggle and she probably sees a script and thinks "fuck this is going to take a few days to read" while her counterparts are knocking them out in 90 mins or so.

Hollywood stars can be broken into two categories. readers and non readers. 20 years later, you can generally figure out which is which. And if you havent read a script, its a lot easier to let your agents mess around on the negotiation process. when you read something and love it, most actors figure out a way to make the deal happen. They also make movies happen that wouldn't happen otherwise because they're reading writing samples, stuff for their production company, even magazine articles that would make good movies. She is not a reader.

I can see Cher in Driving Miss Daisy. Front seat or back.

by Anonymousreply 72January 16, 2023 8:03 PM

[quote] Peter Bogdanovich made 4 good movies in a 50 year career, so who cares about the bullshit that came out of his mouth?

He only directed about 13 or 14 theatrical movies, a couple of them documentaries (which were excellent - the John Ford and the Buster Keaton docs). Harper Lee only wrote one book. As Billy Wilder told Jack Lemmon, you're as good as the best thing you've ever done.

by Anonymousreply 73January 16, 2023 8:24 PM

Cher started in movies (as a serious actress) a little old. She was good, she wasn't that good looking.

I was kind of surprised when she was on with Robert Osborne, presenting her 4 film choices, she didn't seem all that bright. He had to step in and talk for her a lot of the time. He did a lot of the talking.

Peter B is full of shit, and died broke living in an apartment in the Valley with his ex wife and mother in law. Cher had no problem with Robert Altman, Mike Nichols or Norman Jewison.

As for the reading, that poster knows nothing about Cher. Her dyslexia is more pronounced in her writing than her reading. She had to learn multiple songs/sketches weekly on the old Sonny and Cher show.

Cher's movie output was based on one thing- money. She couldn't live the way she wanted on film salaries, compared to touring and residencies. In fact, Cher's mom was the only one supportive of her trying a film career. Managers, most of her family and anyone else that depended on her financially were happy with the status quo of her making a million a month in Vegas- that was big money in the late 70s.
