I heard on the news about Crumbl Cookies being found in violation of child labor laws in many of its locations, and my local news reported a few locations are scheduled to open in my area in the beginning of 2023. I never heard of them before - so I checked out reviews online for other locations. I saw mostly bad reviews on Yelp (mostly from women of color) saying the cookies are horrible and over-priced (they're about $5 per cookie, the flavors are 'artistic'). They also complained about service - both online and in person. (These reviews were for different locations, not just one). Do any DLrs go to any of these Crumbl Cookies, and what do you think of the cookies, prices and service ?
I've been to one location in the LA suburbs. The cookies are good; they're huge - each one is 2-3 servings. Yes, they're overpriced, but it's hype. Never heard anything about child labor/exploitation there before. Good service.

I had a four pack - didn't like any of them.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 22, 2022 5:02 PM |
Those don't look particularly "artisan."
For the money, if you're in NYC, I'd rather go to Levain Bakery or Chip City (which does more interesting flavors on a rotating weekly basis).
Both Levain and Chip City ship nationwide.

There's a branch coming to the UWS in NYC.

I started going on the recommendation of my students. It's fun because each week they announce four random flavors that are available only that week. The cookies are ok, but yes, it's hype. The stores are run by teenagers, just like smoothie shops.

Yum—cookies.

Yes, apparently so - and now they're in trouble in violation of child labor laws.

Just like all the cupcake stores that popped up in the last decade, Crumbl Cookies are overpriced and overrated. They’re taking something that has been done better forever and adding shit that does not improve the cookie.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 22, 2022 6:43 PM |
It seems like they expanded very quickly. They have almost 700 locations already. Cookie stores seem to be a thing of the past -- how many Mrs. Fields or Great American Cookie locations still exist?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 22, 2022 6:45 PM |
I heard they use packaged storebought cookie mix as a base for their cookies. Like Betty Crocker.
Can you imagine??
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 22, 2022 6:48 PM |
r11, it’s pretty standard for bakeries to use mixes and prepared ingredients. You’re paying for them to bake it, not make every element from scratch on the premises.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 22, 2022 6:52 PM |
R11 thinks thre French Fries and hamburger she gets at her favorite non-fast-food place are "fresh" and not formed and frozen, and that her "cream of potato" soup is not made from leftovers.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 22, 2022 6:55 PM |
r11 no they use package store bought CAKE mix, like Betty Crocker. R12 not really. Most bakeries bake from scratch. They just buy their ingredients in bulk. There have been visible packages of off the shelf cake mix packages at Crumbl.

In RIwe have a cookie 'chain' getting started called "Feed the Cheeks". I believe there's a few ready to open in Boston area . Very overpriced, 'special flavors' each month, limited supply, horrible service, and undistinguishable cookies. I believe they're looking to expand across New England.

I worked for Mrs Fields in Denver Co and Im here to tell you they were the best damn cookies going. Every ingredient was top of the line, thats why even then they were $5 a cookie. I actually enjoyed working for her until she showed up during the holidays and gave each manager and asst manager a frigging mink teddy bear instead of a bonus. Id rather have had the money.

I remember David's Cookies from the early1980s. One opened in the mall in my city, but the foot traffic in the busy mall wasn't enough to keep the franchise going. In all fairness, the cookies were just "OK" - nothing to brag about. The place closed within two years.

There used to a chain out of Columbus Ohio called Cheryl's (no relation) cookies. They were the best because an hour before closing they would do a last-hour special you could get 10 fresh baked things for 8.99, cookies, brownies, anything. Then they got bought by 1800 flowers and went to shit.

Crumbl is for downmarket, easily impressed suburbanites. The cookies are NOT good. Anyone who thinks crumbl is good needs to visit a real bakery. I've eaten a crumbl cookie so I know what I'm talking about.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 23, 2022 7:34 AM |
I've tried it a few times at office parties. Someone usually brings some.
They're ok, but are way too rich and cloyingly sweet. I could only eat a quarter of the cookie before I felt sick from all the butter and sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 23, 2022 8:02 AM |
My brother loves this place. It’s by his office, so he always has an assortment at the house when you drop by.

They are cookies. You really have to fuck up a cookie for it to be bad. And they charge way too much.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 23, 2022 11:30 PM |
They are not very good.
The concept is actually OK. Different cookies you've never tried each week.
But all of them are soft, if not underbaked. They're all extremely sweet. And they aren't doing things that are that radical for flavors.
Grade: D

Crumble or Tuscany?

My cousin's dumb ass wife is Crumbl fan and fits into the category of easily impressed suburbanite. My cousin and his wife along with several other people in my extended family are nurses. At family events, it's common to hear them exchanging workplace stories. Last summer at a get together, my cousin's wife was whining because the family of discharged patient sent Crumbl cookies as thank you gift to the hospital she works at. She was pissed because someone in admin was allowing clerks, security guards, and other people in non-medical roles to go in and have some of the stupid oversized cookies. Her main argument is that usually patients and their families intend food gifts to be for nurses, CNAs, therapists and physicians who are dealing with the patients the most. I sort of get her argument, but I thought it was dumb for her bitch over a food donation.
A couple of weeks after that get together, I met up with another cousin who is also a nurse. He can't stand my cousin's wife. He also works in a hospital setting and he mentioned having co-workers similar to the other cousin's wife. He said in his workplace pre-covid, a small group of whiny nurses would get a bit pissy if food/beverage donations were extended to non-medical employees. He said once covid hit and businesses were frequently sending in meals, snacks, and beverages as appreciation gifts the whiny nurse group became much worse. Administration at his hospital didn't want left over food in break rooms or unopened canned or bottled beverages filling up refrigerators so they advised all employees if they wanted to get food and beverages. He said the whiny nurse clique was unhappy and some of them got the point where if they saw a non-medical employee getting donated food they would tell them off and chase them out of break rooms or lobby areas. Their whiny antics led to additional drama between various department heads who didn't like their employees being mistreated. He said most of the food/beverage donations were from pizza places, fast food places, sub sandwich shops, grocery store delis, and soft drink beverage companies. He said it wasn't expensive fancy food and he felt it was pointless for several nurses to whine over that stuff being offered to all employees. He said he knows Crumbl is expensive as fuck, but he was still annoyed with the whiny attitude of my cousin's wife.

I'm guessing these stores will turn out like those cupcake bakeries that have no customers but somehow stay in business. They're either vanity businesses that the owner's husband keeps afloat so the wife has something to do all day, or they are kept alive for money laundering.

I don't understand anything about Crumbl.
The cookies are terrible and they reek of the kind of artificial flavor and preservatives I can taste.
They have, like, six fucking cookies available at any time! What the fuck? This isn't a bakery. Jesus motherfucking Christ, you can find more selection and variety at a fucking convenience store.
And why does a place like that need a giant back of counter area to make six cookies.....likely just premade and heated there....?
This is a sign of the weird psychology of marketing today, where businesses create a faux sense of shortages or limited availability to get people to create "buzz" and demand for something that is readily available otherwise. There's a burger shop near where I used to live in Chicago with a small menu and they regularly have 3 hour waits for a burger that is the same frozen Sysco burger you can get at any industrial cafeteria in the city.
But these businesses tricked the public into thinking it's special in some way, worth the wait, when it's just overpriced garbage, hyped into infinity.
Sad that a shithole like Crumbl could put real, honest to goodness bakeries out of business.

Chris Morocco's chocolate chip cookies. The hardest thing in this incredibly easy recipe is browning some butter.
[quote] ACTIVE TIME 20 minutes TOTAL TIME 40 minutes
[quote] Food director Chris Morocco spent months (truly) developing this chocolate chip cookie recipe—he made nearly 30 batches, plus 10 more in the cross-testing phase—to ensure they were the absolute best. What makes this recipe deliver on that promise? Crispy edges, a buttery chew, and plenty of chocolate chunks in every bite—all without a stand mixer.
