Singer Calum Scott was ‘totally abandoned’ by friends after coming out

The former Britain’s Got Talent winner opened up about the impact of his coming out in an interview Metro on Friday (17 June) and how being the pain of being rejected inspired his new single “Boys in the Street”.

Scott said that when he told his friends at the age of 13 they essentially unfriended him. “I told my friends and was totally abandoned,” he explained. “So I understand the pain that comes with being misunderstood and not feeling like you’re part of anything.

“I wanted to skateboard and BMX and do all the stuff that we did because I was 13, 14 years old. Girls were coming into our group and I was just like, I want to skateboard.”

Although Scott had already told his parents and they accepted him, the rejection from his friends left him questioning everything.

“It was very innocent for me at the time but then because I felt like I was different from them, all of a sudden I started scrutinising myself, got really down on myself to a point where I felt like I had to tell somebody and I’m a total mummy’s boy, so I trusted my mum” he said.

This experience stayed with Scott so much so that he penned new song “Boys in the Street” based on the rejection and abandonment he faced.

“The beautiful thing about the way that the song is crafted is because it talks about that pain and then it starts to get a bit better,” he said

This isn’t the first time Scott has written a song based on his experience, like most songwriters he pulls from his own life.

His most popular single to date, “No Matter What”, was actually about how Scott came out to his mother and she told him she would love him “no matter what”.

Scott said: “When I released that song, it was me making peace with it and realising that actually my story’s one of hundreds and thousands and I thought, if I put that out there considering the kind of platform I have, this is the perfect opportunity for me to highlight a really important topic.”

He sounds exhausting.

Boring...

He has about 2-3 years before Only Fans is no longer a viable option.

I'm an eldergay...unfamiliar with this young whippersnapper. But, golly, I listened to a few videotaped segments on my youtune machine and I think he's just aces!

I didn't come out to any of my friends until my mid-20s...this was back in the '80s decade of the last century. But I stayed closeted for all those years because of my fear that my "friends" would treat me as this young Calum chap was treated a few years back. Some did, but many didn't. And I can't get those years back. And now I don't have many left.

I would like to think that the world has changed, and it has. But not enough. And not soon enough.

13 year old boys were homophobic and unaccepting of difference? Stop the presses!

Pleasantiy generic pop music by a handsome man, but utterly forgettable after listening.

Never heard of him but I googled and he's got a stunning voice. Here's his cover of Dancing On My Own. Worth a listen. He's also done a piano/orchestral duet with Whitney on I Wanna Dance With Somebody which I will link next. Very tight and that's quite a big voice to go up against.

I absolutely LOVE you R3. "YouTune Machine" lol!

I don't really like his music, but he is very hot. Refreshing to see a contemporary gay male pop singer who isn't presenting as a nelly queen.

Coming out to your friends at age 13 takes a lot of courage. I didn't tell anyone until I was 18.

Boys in the Street made me remember the first date I had with my boyfriend. We had agreed to meet at a gay bar and on the way I ran into an old co-worker. As I was leaving the co-worker he suddenly kissed me on the mouth. He had never done this before so I was taken aback. When I met the guy for the date he told me he saw the kiss!
