I am a woman in love
It's a right I defend, over and over again, what do I do?
My parents used to play the Guilty album, and this track in particular, all the time when I was growing up. And I used to think it was so cheesy. Clearly I had wax in my ears. It randomly popped up on Spotify playlist for me this evening and I had to pause and replay this track four times in a row.
It's fucking perfection. Yes, of course, Streisand's incredible vocal, but also the subtle but distinctive Bee Gee's style background vocals, Barry Gibbs' skillful arrangement, the wonderful session musicians' performance. (Yes, I've been on Wikipedia this evening.)
I don't think anything else they recorded together can come close to this track, though. It's in a class of its own.
I looked up some clips of Streisand performing the song live and they're all perfectly fine, but none comes close to the magic of the recording. Especially without that late 70s/very early 80s style arrangement and the backing vocals.

It’s an outstanding track, I agree. Peak Babs.

The very first time I walked into a gay bar in 1980 (Fran's Place, Lynn, MA) this was the song the dj was spinning.
I have always done my best to be as gay as possible.

That’s one Barbra album where every song is perfection.

It really is a near perfect pop album.
My favorite track.

"The Love Inside" is my favorite Streisand vocal ever.

It's not that I dislike Barbara's singing at all, even during this exceptionally cheesy period.
I just always wonder why her stans have to shove her down everyone else's throats.

We all grow up and realize how stupid we were as young people when we thought we knew everything and had all the answers. Glad you've come around, OP.

Agreed R7. It should've been a single.

That is for sure one of my favorite sings of hers.
I love it. It makes such a statement in an “I am woman” type of way.
Guilty is fabulous as well.

Dear God, I can remember all this cheesy late 70s/ early 80s adult contemporary music and quite fondly! There was a time period when I was six-nine years old, songs like "Woman in Love", "Heartbreaker", "Sweetheart", "Him" were played all the time, everywhere. Getting up on a still dark winter morning, listening to the local AM radio station to see if we were going to have school that day. Going into Hook's Drugs and there would be a radio playing behind the checkout. I can't believe there isn't a DL thread for these type of songs.

I persuaded a record store to give me a giant poster of the cover art since they had so many of them and then I had to carry it with me home on the train.

When I was about 9 the radio station I listened to would play Name ThatTune, one note only, & the first person to call in would win a prize. So they chose this song & I instantly recognized it & called in…and they told me I was too young .& hung up on me! Motherfuckers.

Guilty is a great album as is Eyes That See in the Dark by Kenny Rogers. Barry and his brothers really knew how to write and produce for other singers. Barbra and Kenny got the best of the Brothers Gibb material.
I think A Woman in Love is where Barbra never sounded better and where she was never cooler. Kind of like Diana Ross with the Chic-produced album, diana., which was kept out of the top spot by none other than Guilty.
It was a smart move for both women to work with the Bee Gees and Chic respectively. It gave them some of their strongest material but I don't think they ever were cooler or more hip. And it was authentic and the songs were well suited to their voices.

After all these years, this track puts a smile on my face.

I read that Barry actually had to convince Babs to sing the “it’s a right I defend” line. She thought it was cheesy too.

Have you heard Barry's demo?

R18 I loved this album of my mom's and listened to it with those big headphones, and I always thought that line was, "is it right? hard to take. over and over again" That would have been better.
