Heartstopper hate thread
This should have been made a while ago. I can't stand that shitty twee, annoying show. I seriously don't get the praise. Am I the only one?
Reasons I don't like it: they don't act like normal teenagers. They don't drink or have sex. They went out for milkshakes on their first date. Are they supposed to be 5 or 15? I rolled my eyes SO hard. Why do they not drink?! Teenagers drink, ESPECIALLY brits! Don't even get me started on them not fucking. They were rolling around on the floor while barely kissing!! Loooool. Very realistic. I laughed so hard. This show is comedy goals. Are we supposed to just ignore the fact that two horny MALE teenagers don't want to have sex? Are they asexual, neutered, both?! I guess they never jerk off either, right?! They are just purely innocent munks who have never touched their own pee-pees, so the Christians can be happy. Who the fuck made this shitty show. You can tell it wasn't made by a male, that's for sure. A male would have made a more realistic show about gay male sexuality. Oh, and last but not least: what's up with the two dimensional charcters? Why are the gays so perfect? Why don't they act like normal people? Even the kindest, nicest people have flaws. It's called being human. Why is the bully evil? Why does he not have any redeeming qualities? Again, one dimensional shit.
This show is annoying, neutered, asexual and clearly made for asexual nonbinary teens with blue hair, not actual sexual gays. Will we EVER see gay male characters on tv who actually get to fuck?!

This all this!! Spot on! I don't understand the hype of the show. The acting is terrible. The lady that wrote it seems to forget what it was like being a real teenager and paints a world that is very unrealistic.

Agree OP. Though I did like the sentimental romance and enjoyed watching it- I couldn’t stop thinking of my own coming out at 15-16 which was all about just getting off. I never understood guys who were “confused” or questioning being gay - either your dick gets hard around guys or girls. The “falling in love” thing never occurred to me until much later. But i thought that maybe that’s what gay boys do now? And the young ‘uns seem to drink much less now.

There was an element of sweetness about it. I would have preferred that scenario rather than the clinical fumbling I had with straight boys.
I liked getting off, but I never had the sense that they were gay and enjoying it the way I did, or that there was any sense of romance which existed then with these same boys and girls.
One can think it's somewhat unrealistic sex wise, yet still crave the romance aspect.
I may not be the only gay man that is projecting, and wishes I had had some of those same "unrealistic" experiences as portrayed in the show when I was that age.

At that age, a random breeze could get you hard. All the boys I fumbled with got hard and had orgasms, but I'm pretty sure that I was the only gay one and they were all straight and just experimenting.
We never kissed. That would have been nice and would have been a sign that I wasn't alone.

Whenever I see those threads and click by accident and see the ugly eyebrow kid or anorexic twinks, I wonder if these posters are on the sex offender registry.

I agree with you, OP; when I was that age, if I was alone with a boy, I had a speck of a chance to get down and play with dick, I took it. No sex, no hand job, no bj. It's completely unrealistic.
And yes, the bushy eyebrows guy is not cute at all.

R9 Yes! How could I forget to mention that?! The lack of sex is one thing, as we know it was written by an asexual frau. The lack of realism is another issue. Charlie is a 2 and Nick is a 6. These two would never date in real life.

R2 Yes! I have said this before. Young Royals is MUCH better. The characters are multi dimensional, they are not just perfect or just evil like the ones in Heartstopper. Also, they are normal teenagers who party, drink, have sex and make mistakes. They are flawed, like all humans are. Even the main characters made mistakes, Simon was selling drugs and Wilhelm well... he fucked up plenty of times. Nick and Charlie are just too perfect, they never make mistakes, they don't drink, or have sex.

R8 True. The show is a kid show, where the teenagers act like 5, not 15. When they were on that milshake double date I thugh it was cute... for 5 year olds. Who the fuck goes out for milkshakes these days? Let alone teenagers. Please also remember these are brits, brits drink like sailors from they are like 12. I liked SKINS when that aired because the teenagers portrayed were normal, smoking pot, drinking, partying, having sex. This is lacking from Heartstopper.

Exactly. So why are the gays on Heartstopper not behaving like normal, horny teenagers? They are neutered to appeal to the masses. As sad as it is I wonder if that's why it's so popular? Girls love shipping boys... as long as it doesn't get too sexual. And I know all the good reviews for this show claim it's good because it's about "romance" and not sex, as if one rules out the other. If these were straight they would be having sex, you can bet your ass they would. Not only are these two not straight, they are also male, teenagers and horny. In real life they would fuck daily. It bothers me that the only shows about gay males that can get popular are about neutered gays. We will never have a show that depicts gay sexuality and gays having sex get popular, like the lesbians. It fucking sucks.

Tl;dr. I'm OP. Reasons I hate Heartstopper:
1. One dimensional characters
2. Neutered gays
3. Discrepancy in looks between Charlie and Nick
4. No hotties among the cast

My friend got me to watch it with her when it first came out. Honestly, I thought it was sweet and light and that's it really. I spoke to other gay guys who'd seen it afterwards and we all kinda said that we wished our high school days had been as easy. Yeah it's not realistic, but sweet, you know?
I have no interest in keeping watching it, and I agree, you can tell straight away it was not written by a gay man. But as others have pointed out, there are plenty of other shows that have more of that stuff in them if you want.
I think my thing is that it's just aimed at too young an audience for me to want to continue with it. It was ok to watch just to see what the fuss is about, and I'm glad younger people have these options of shows to watch now. It wasn't that long ago I was that age and having to squint hard to try and make some random character maybe, possibly, seem gay.

Nope. That's the whole problem. There is very little gay (male) content, period. The two gay led shows on Netflix right now are Young Royals and Herstopper. Trust me, if there were any other gay shows to watch, I would have watched them. Yes, you do have other shows with gay characters in them, but they are part of en ensamble, like Elite, and/or they get very little screentime like the gays on 1899.

Try 'Smiley', 'Merli, Sapere Aude, and 'Uncoupled', for instance, all on Netflix, all have sex, and all have subjectively hot 'gay' men.
The quality of the two Spanish shows is much greater than the American (Uncouplled), a low bar indeed.

So Smiley is good, R19? It is trending heavily on Netflix, I noticed. I might give it a go if people recommend it.

I'm on Episode 5 and I love it. Smartly written - probably by someone gay though I haven't researched - it has a distinct gay sensibility throughout - good acting, pretty men, hunky men, interesting characters that you recognize, and a variety of relationships.
It's not Shakespeare and I've seen better shows, but it is light, and fun, it takes chances, and it has the characters and situations that it seems people here are asking for.
it's a different show than 'Heartstopper', but there is room for all.
It's worth a viewing. Taste is random. Everybody I know spoke highly of 'Uncoupled', and I really dislike it. Stopped watching after two episodes. Dislike the actors, disliked the characters. (Perhaps I need different friends.)

Isn't this series about gay teens NOW. Why are you old cooters comparing it to your MISERABLE teen years of at least half a century ago. Times have changed.

I have finished this series. I enjoyed it very much. It's treacly-sentimental and manipulative but effectively so. I teared up several times, by how touching it was about young sexuality. The two leads were delightful. Sorry, no snark to share.

I'm not sure people from outside the UK get that it's set in a grammar school. They take the pupils who come top in their exams at 11 and are really hard to get into, so you tend to get kids who are a bit more studious and less rebellious. Also milk shake cafes are really big in the UK. There is a really strong movement in teens for "clean living". A lot of them are going vegan etc. It also starts when Nick is 16 and Charlie is only 14 (there is nearly a two year age gap between them). It would be super unusual for someone to date someone from a year below them at school and Nick is old for his year and Charlie is young for his. Charlie is just very mature for his age and I think Nick is respectful of this. If you go on and read the books, This Winter and Nick and Charlie (which I think have only just been released in the US, but have been around for a long time in the UK) you see that they do develop a full on sexual relationship but its very discrete because these books were written as teen fiction. Having been a foster mum to a lot of LGBTQ+ kids, I think its an idealised version of what a lot of them would have wanted for themselves. In reality things tend to be grittier and less romantic but we can all dream of a first love like this.

Bump. Stupid show. One dimensional characters and asexual gays. It's ridiculous that horny teenagers don't even have sex. Not realistic what so ever. Teenagers have sex, gay or straight, especially gay guys as guys are naturally more horny. So why are they not allowed to have sex on Heartstopper? Thanks to this show we can look forward to many years of asexual gay characters. It has already started with the asexual gays on Emmerdale who won't even kiss, let alone have sex. When will we get a show that has a realistic portrayal of gay men and gay sex?

Yes its made by a straight (sorry, 'queer' - so....straight) girl for straight guys (who may or may not turn into gay ftms). I knew this was created by a chick before knowing who made it simply but the fact she made the love interest bi - all the 'MLM' female writers love bi boys..........

Heartstopper is so bad. So so so bad. It's god awful. You write a story about two teenage boys in love, yet they're not allowed to have sex? Lol. As if two horny boys in real life wouldn't have sex?! Then there's the fact that they act like 12 instead of 16. You're telling me two teenagers are not only celibate, but don't drink? Lol. Absolutely ridiculous. The whole show is not only unrealistic, it reeks of homophobia.

I don't care if they have sex. Not all teenagers are ready for sex, or have sex. TV leads you to believe all teens (all people) are sexually active all the time, or want to be. But I still don't find it realistic. They still should be depicted having strong sexual feelings, whatever they do about them - and strong emotions. The books and the show depict the leads like cute puppies.

R31 That’s true. The author is asexual (whatever that means. Just say you’re frigid and can’t get laid) and she has hard on for white gay men.

R25 thank you for this very good explanation, I'm from down under and couldnt understand why this school bore no resemblance to the school I went to at that age. Explains the lack of fighting/ fucking/ weed and whiskey etc etc not to mention the absence of swearing. I was definitely one of the more studious/ less rebellious kids at my school but I was still a foul mouthed little motherfucker and got caned/ disciplined a few times for entirely good reasons

You have never read any gay male romance novels written by fraus, where the sex scenes are as graphic as anything found on Nifty.org.
