Good for Amy. I wonder if she still considers herself a Republican. I know she was good friends with the Bushes, but I can't imagine she's a fan of Trump and the MAGA crowd.

She didn't remote strike me as MAGA when we saw her about a year ago in LA. My husband was a big fan of her music and she really seemed like a not so nuts, more enlightened Christian woman. This kinda proves it.

I worked with her 30 years ago during the Heart In Motion era and I have nothing but nice memories of that time…she was down to earth and already progressive about gay issues…and this was in the middle of the AIDS crisis and it was easy to dismiss gays back then…
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 15, 2022 2:31 PM |
Always been a fan of her. Things like this are nice to hear. A true Christian. Unlike so many others that remain bigots....
She still gets slack from the Christian community, though. Its such bullshit.

R10 No, they were already going through divorce filings or something. Amy's ex was a very toxic man supposedly and an addict. And she was separated from him, if I recall.
Both Vince and Amy were good friends before they dated.
Christian community bashes her for selling out and going mainstream and supposedly losing her Christian values going into secular. When in her mainstream music she still kept those same values and good messages though. The super religious are a dense group. Ha

[quote] Amy Grant announced to the Washington Post that she and her husband Vince Gill are going to host a same-sex wedding on their farm for her niece. Amy is quoted as saying, “Jesus you just narrowed it down to two things: love God and love each other.”
[quote] Yes, we are to love God and love each other. But if we love God, we will seek to obey His Word. Jesus told us, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). God defines what is sin, not us; and His Word is clear that homosexuality is sin.
[quote] We have all sinned, and in order to have a relationship with God and spend eternity with Him in Heaven, we must turn from our sin and put our faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, who came to earth to die for our sins.
[quote] The Bible says, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out,” (Acts 3:19). For me, loving others also means caring about their souls and where they will spend eternity. It means loving people enough to tell them the truth from the Word of God. The authority of God’s Word is something we can never compromise on.

When she had her first mainstream pop hit with "Find a Way," an annoying fundie girl I knew in college declared, "I'm going to pray hard that she doesn't end up in the fires of hell!" Never mind that the song was explicitly religious.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 19, 2022 4:46 PM |
She was shunned because she went pop. Religious purists were afraid that she was going to become a harlot. Then the Vince Gill thing happened.
The Heart in Motion album was HUGE at the time. It seems crazy in retrospect, but Baby Baby was played on steady rotation on MTV and even earned a Video Music award nomination. She had a couple of other big hits from it as well.
I knew someone at school who had a MAJOR crush on her at that time and put her in the same league as Cindy Crawford.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 19, 2022 4:55 PM |
I think it helped that she attended a secular high school (Harpeth Hall in Nashville) and Vanderbilt for college.

Yes, but MTV didn't start playing the video for Baby Baby until the song had already become a hit on the radio and reached the top 10. It was like MTV didn't want to play the video, but eventually the song was such a huge hit that they had no choice. I think Amy has talked about this in interviews -- how reluctant MTV was to play her music.

She had an interesting voice. She didn’t have a big voice like Celine or Mariah or Whitney. Her voice sounded kind of boyish.
But she had that bland, wholesome quality that everybody could relate to in the early 90s. Very “adult contemporary.” But why didn’t she have a bigger career after “Heart in Motion?” I’m guessing she was eclipsed by Mariah and Whitney and Celine.

it's disgusting how much an outcry she gets from evangelical Chad's and Karen's on social media. Lord forbid she realizes there are gay people out there who might like her music, as opposed to washed up losers like Kirk and Candace who spat on every LGBT person who ever watched their lame sitcoms growing up (and both shows were lame, haven't aged well). Amy seems to come from a place of love and compassion and realizes a fan is a fan, much like Dolly and Lisa Whelchel

She was kind of bland - she never had a big voice or any kind of shtick, but her Christmas songs like Tennessee Christmas are still regularly played & she had a good album in the 90's with a version of "Somewhere Down the Road" that brings tears to your eyes.

Amy has never NOT been an ally to the gay community. Being in a community who typically hates gay people is a rough job. She the bridge for us though most fundies are cunts! I've been a fan since 1980. Most of the people running her fan club from the start are gay men. She even pulls them up stage at concerts to personally thank them . I saw last at the Cerritos Center in 2018 and the queens in front were all queening out in the front row dancing their asses off. Amy went down and danced with them. So much fun to watch. She great!

Amy Grant has spoken about how her three kids were 'grim' at her and Vince's wedding, how she and Vince were 'the only excited people' there.
The Grant daughter in R4 has written on her Instagram how she and her siblings loathed Vince for years because his affair with Amy broke up her parents' marriage. Their affair is a well-known fact, no point in trying to rewrite history like some obsessed weirdo.

Vince Gill, on the other hand, has an exceptional voice.
I saw Larry King (?) interviewing Vince and Amy together. Larry asked about the beginnings of their relationship and they were obviously uncomfortable and reticent. I wasn't convinced that there was no overlap in relationships.
That said, for celebrities, they both seem like decent people.

Vince really does have a great voice. When I saw their show at the Ryman at Nashville, my God, his voice was incredible. She is great too although her voice has diminished over the years.
I've always loved their duet of House of Love. I'm surprised that considering they are married and tour together occasionally, they haven't done a full album together.

I remember watching an interview with her in the 80s her peak as Christian princess of pop, she was asked somewhat jokingly if going on the road with her was an exceptionally clean experience compared to other bands. She flat out said "no", and people would be shocked to know it could get rough at times, and the wild acts sometimes had an easier and smoother time when touring. I found her so refreshing and honest.

No, she wasn't in the league of Mariah & Whitney. It was like when Shania Twain ended up on VH1's Divas with Aretha Franklin, Mariah, Celine Dion, etc. Gloria Estefan was also on that same Divas and she's not a heavy hitter, vocally, either.

Amy may not be a big belter or have a voice like Mariah's or Whitney's but I will take her voice any day over the shrieking or whistle notes of Mariah. Amy's voice has a beautiful tone, and her voice can convey so much. Which is why she was a great pop star for a brief moment.
Her Lead Me On album is excellent. It is a Christian album and yet she branched out and sang songs by Janis Ian and Jimmy Webb.
