Nancy Pelosi's portrait unveiled in the Capitol. Congratulations, Madame Speaker.
John Boehner pays tribute:
"You’ve been incredibly effective as the leader of your caucus. The younger generation today has a saying: 'Game recognizes game.' The fact of the matter is no other speaker of the House in the modern era — Republican or Democrat — has wielded the gavel with such authority or with such consistent results," Boehner said, calling Pelosi "one tough cookie."
"My girls told me tell the speaker how much we admire her," Boehner said, choking back tears as he spoke. "As if you couldn't tell, my girls are Democrats," he said to laughs at the ceremony in the Capitol.

It's an okay portrait, but I prefer her with her current hair.

My gawd, I cannot believe how misty I feel listening to Boehner. His self-deprecating joke about his daughters…..that’s how I remember (some!!!) Republicans from when I was a child, my grandfather was actually kind of like John. It’s a shame that Dems didn’t do formal outreach to recruit people like him, I think more of them would have joined the Dems.

I always thought Boehner wanted a little of that

The shorter cut is professional and no-nonsense. Ya want her to look like Sophia Loren?

It's a beautiful portrait. She should be proud.
What a shock that Boehner had to 'choke back tears'. I mean, he never gets emotional in front of a crowd, and never sheds a tear.

Boehner can’t get through breakfast without weeping like a menopausal woman.

This story made me tear up!
I never thought I'd say this, but I kinda miss Boehner. At least he tried to be a civilized human being.
And the likeness in Nancy's portrait is spot-on. She looks great.
It's the end of an era, ladies and gentlemen. So fasten your seatbelts -- it's going to be a bumpy next two years.

The first thing I remember when I hear about John Boehner is his constant crying. Good grief. He needs therapy.

I always had a soft spot for Boehner, the sentimental old over-tanned Merlot drunk.

It’s a nice portrait, but Pelosi deserves a triptych: this portrait, the image of her tearing up Trump’s speech, and the image attached below, which I think will come to be viewed as one if the defining images of the Trump years.

R26 I resent my own nostalgia at this.
"Game recognizes game." As the young people born after 1970 say.

John Boehner has no grounds for positioning himself as the "game" that "recognizes game." I wonder why he was the one to preside over the unveiling.
I will give him, though, that he looks exactly the same to me as when he left office. Perhaps that perma-tanned hide is too tough to wrinkle?

I will always be grateful to her for so bravely standing up against Trump, when so many others were afraid of him.

Nancy’s portrait and hair is from when she became speaker in 2007. Agree love her current chic look.
After her husband’s attack, Nancy seems to have aged a bit. The family all said at the hospital that they were “DONE” with it and now she is too.

Me too! I remember being so angry with him & now he seems like your favorite drunk uncle, stubborn, annoying but mostly well-meaning with a sentimental heart. He & even the odious Paul Ryan seem like sweethearts compared to the current crop of loons.

They're why we have the current crop of loons. They planted the seeds, fertilized the soil, watered them, tended to them. This is their doing. Don't get all misty about it.

I cannot believe what this woman has gone through. Every single powerful woman leader in the US is fucking savaged. I would kill to know how Nancy really feels right now. Was it worth it? Does she have any regrets? Does she feel like she accomplished the mission? Does she feel that she was able to leave our country and party better off than before she served? What does she see as our most immediate challenge? Will she do any advocacy on specific issues in her retirement? Is there any bitterness or pain from all of it?
We will never see anyone like her again because she fit a particular point in time. I am excited that she chose Hakeem, I think he is tough as fuck and might be able to fight in ways that she could not because she’s a woman.

R24. Well said.
The family isn't talking about Paul Pelosi because he's suffered a traumatic brain injury. He's not the same man he was before the attack. There must be a lot of reflection going on all around in that family.

I'll never forget worrying one day if I was going to be paid during lockdown, if I would be able to meet the rent, then turned on Corden that night and there she was eating expensive ice cream from her double freezer. Later she wanted to give us a whole 600 bucks - but only some of us. God bless her.
