Didn't Marya (Adjani) have any relatives she could go stay with, when her husband was in jail? Or, couldn't she just have gone back to the chorus? Why move in with these perverts?

I get this movie mixed up with The Comfort of Strangers, which (I think) is also about innocence corrupted in Europe.
I’ve never wanted to see either of them.
Isabelle Adjani occasionally annoys me as an actress. It’s as if her face can’t move.

Adjani is very beautiful, but not much in the acting department. I did think she did well with Camille Claudel.

French actresses like Adjani, Deneuve, and Huppert can be so unruffled and chicly detached that you wonder if they’re deaf.

The father of DL faves Samuel and Arthur Chatto shows up for the fun. Daniel was quite twinkalicious in Quartet.
I love this messy movie, and its even messier source novelist, Jean Rhys.
