The Problem With Walmart

Self-checkout. They eliminated this at my local store, but not at others I’ve been to in Philadelphia.

Still, I don’t think I will ever set foot in another Walmart until they rectify this issue. I love the cheap sportswear and some of the food bargains. But the clientele are strictly lowlifes (sp?)

I do the cashiers job ten times as fast as they do, I hate stores that don’t have self checkout for purely selfish reasons

by Anonymousreply 1December 13, 2022 2:35 PM

[quote] "Get rid of the self checkouts and watch the thefts decrease," she said. "I don't use them because it is taking a job away from someone. I'd much rather see a person checking me out than an cold-hearted machine."

Fuck that. They can pry the self checkouts from my cold, dead hands.

by Anonymousreply 2December 13, 2022 2:36 PM

The problem with Walmart is the customers they attract. Dollar General has this same problem. Poor people are grubby, thieving animals. When you sell cheap shit to poors, and scrimp on security/staffing, you're just begging to be ripped off.

This is why Whole Foods, Nordstrom, Apple, and Williams-Sonoma stay out of the ghetto and the trailer park. They know the locals can't afford their shit, and they won't have them walking through the doors looking for stuff they can steal.

As someone said on DL recently: "When you scrape the bottom of the barrel, don't complain when you only get scraps."

by Anonymousreply 3December 13, 2022 2:37 PM

^^^ that quoted frau probably also chats with everyone in line and waits until the total is rung up BEFORE digging through her oversized handbag to get out her CHECKBOOK.

by Anonymousreply 4December 13, 2022 2:38 PM

Walmart might be able to pivot to an Amazon ripoff model, but that seems unlikely. Amazon has already claimed that market, and Walmart is too richly invested in real estate and retail operations to suddenly become an online shopping powerhouse.

Fuck Walmart. Fuck anyone who works there. Fuck anyone who shops there, knowing what shit it is and how horribly they treat their workers. Enjoy the people zoo, you cheap pricks!

by Anonymousreply 5December 13, 2022 2:39 PM

Which Philadelphia store, OP? The one near me is in South Philly. Absolutely ratchet. The customers are shameless with their stealing. I use Amazon or Target. The latter is starting to lock up things like dental and shaving products. They actually shut down for a couple of days to install the security shelving.

That’s annoying because when they unlock the item you want, if you’re still shopping, they hold it for you until you get finished. Sometimes that’s a problem because you may have to wait while they’re doing something else. I use whitestrips a lot. My Target store locks them up now. So it’s easier for me to order them from Amazon and have them deliver it to my office.

What are we supposed to do?

by Anonymousreply 6December 13, 2022 2:50 PM

In my Southwestern city I saw 3 newly rennovated Walgreens that served the neediest neighborhoods close inside a year. I never read an explanation but I assumed it was all the issues discussed above.

by Anonymousreply 7December 13, 2022 2:51 PM

Is it because of the post-pandemic economy? So many people are unemployed or have low paying jobs. And inflation has increased noticeably. Are these factors making folks think that they should steal in order to make ends meet?

by Anonymousreply 8December 13, 2022 2:58 PM

Given the choice now, I always choose self-checkout.

It's faster, my merchandise doesn't get manhandled, and I don't have to deal with surly cashiers.

Target seems to be leaning in to self-checkout. It's strange to me that Walmart is having so many problems with it.

by Anonymousreply 9December 13, 2022 3:17 PM

I hate how those cashiers demand on putting one item in per bag. I usually have my own but if I don't I specifically say, "put everything in one bag." They don't. Why is that such an outrageous request? I really can't stand that store and only go if I need something other stores are out of.

by Anonymousreply 10December 13, 2022 3:27 PM

Good, if they don’t like it give customers some god damn service!

by Anonymousreply 11December 13, 2022 3:35 PM

I only go to my nearest Walmart if absolutely necessary. And no matter what time of year or the day, it's ALWAYS FULL OF TRASHY PEOPLE!!!!!

WHY??????????????

by Anonymousreply 12December 13, 2022 3:35 PM

AYFKM, The problem with Walmart is the Walton family 225 Billion dollar fortune. What the family earns in interest in one day could pay the yearly salaries of 1,000 security guards. But sure, blame the poors, especially the darkies.

by Anonymousreply 13December 13, 2022 3:39 PM

The general opinion of self-checkouts seems to have changed over time. At first they were more generally derided - "why should I pay as much when I'm doing the work." Now, I think many more people prefer them. Notably, the systems themselves have come a long way in terms of ease of use, consistency, speed (Target's new ones are FAST), and the rate at which there are any problems. It's really noticeable when a self-check out system ISN'T good. I occasionally go to a grocery store with terrible self checkout - always locking customers out or some other glitch, thereby requiring an attendant who isn't always there. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 14December 13, 2022 3:59 PM

The family earns 100 million dollars a day or 4 million an hour, even with all the rampant, out-of-control thievery by the unwashed masses.

By Walmart's own numbers, and why would they lie about such a thing, they lose 3B a year in "shrinkage". But then there's this:

Walmart receives an estimated $6.2 billion annually in mostly federal taxpayer subsi- dies. The reason: Walmart pays its employees so little that many of them rely on food stamps, healthcare and other taxpayer-funded programs. Walmart avoids an estimated $1 billion in federal taxes each year.

by Anonymousreply 15December 13, 2022 4:49 PM

When you're rich, you can lose 3 billion dollars from theft and you still earn 3 billion dollars, on top of the 100 million a day that you already make. God Bless America. If you work hard like the Waltons, you can be rich too. Or you could shove a 20 dollar steak up your dress.

by Anonymousreply 16December 13, 2022 4:54 PM

Anecdotally speaking: Walmart seems to have a larger area of self-checkout machines and only 1 person watching; there strategy seems to be able to catch once you try to leave rather than making sure you're checking all items. Target has fewer check out machines & the person watching wanders around helping people since self C/O machines are notoriously finnicky. Also, Walmart forces people with a lot of stuff into the the self C/O line because they don't staff enough cashiers & the lines are ridiculously long. If they limited self CO to a under a certain items & didn't try to staff the section with one old lady with a bad leg, they'd likely have an easier time monitoring what's going on & not rely on some big catch as people walk out the door. Assuming you're not trying to steal, it's easy to miss items if you have a lot in your cart.

As far as the stealing thing, lord, people just go to Walmart & act feral. I don't know what you do about that.

by Anonymousreply 17December 13, 2022 5:04 PM

I’m guessing that whatever gets stolen is insured, yes?

by Anonymousreply 18December 13, 2022 5:06 PM

"The one near me is in South Philly. Absolutely ratchet."

I haven't been in that store since 1998, and it was a filthy pigsty then. I can only imagine what it looks like after a quarter of a century of use and abuse.

Do they ever bother to clean that shithole?

The Walmart in South Philly makes the Walmart on Roosevelt Boulevard in the Northeast look like a palace.

by Anonymousreply 19December 13, 2022 5:07 PM

Oh, yes, r19. Spotless.

Now that they’ve stolen everything….

by Anonymousreply 20December 13, 2022 5:10 PM

I loathe the self-checkout.

I refuse to go to them.

Like my brother says, if I wanted to check my groceries, I would be working there.

by Anonymousreply 21December 13, 2022 5:18 PM

Besides only stationing one inattentive person near the self-checkout kiosks, some Walmarts also have their greeters yank carts aside as shoppers leave, ostensibly to catch thieves. But there seems to be no rhyme or reason to who they pull over.

At warehouse stores like Costco or Sam's, receipt-checkers count the (unbagged) items in the cart and compare it to the receipt's item total. That can't be done easily with anything but the smallest Walmart orders. And since most items are bagged it adds another level of complication and inconvenience.

by Anonymousreply 22December 13, 2022 5:23 PM

Walmart literally makes a BILLION dollars a day. They don't give a FUCK if your entire family never sets foot in one again.

by Anonymousreply 23December 13, 2022 5:28 PM

Stores in general are becoming more ratchet everywhere, including grocery stores. I've been seeing people coming in wearing slippers and pajamas. They can't even bother to get changed to go out anywhere.

I don't mind self checkouts personally, but places like Walmart need to start imposing limits to like 12 items or less for these. I've seen assholes go into these with shopping carts filled to the brim with items and stand there forever checking their shit out and bagging it themselves. Target also needs to update their self checkouts to accept cash more easily. The one near me requires an associate to come over to your self checkout and manually unlock a drawer to take your cash and give you your change back. It's a pain in the ass. Aldi self checkouts (at least the one near me) won't even take cash at the self checkouts in their stores.

I very rarely go to Sam's Club, I don't even have a card there, my dad does. By they are largely self checkout as well. I swear I saw at least two families in front of me not even scan like half the shit in their carts/pallets. They have a handheld scanner for you to reach around and scan various items. Their checkout lines also take forever regardless if it's with an actual cashier or self checkout.

by Anonymousreply 24December 13, 2022 5:40 PM

Because I'm clumsy, I always cause a problem at the Walmart self-checkout and some employee always runs over and treats me like a criminal. No, lady, I didn't intend to steal this $2 tube of toothpaste, it just didn't scan after I passed it over four times and the machine got pissed off.

Now I have all my Walmart goods delivered so it's no longer an issue.

by Anonymousreply 25December 13, 2022 7:07 PM

[quote]Their checkout lines also take forever regardless if it's with an actual cashier or self checkout.

I've noticed Costco now has people who scan your stuff for you in the self-check out line. I like that option because I don't tend to buy a lot of stuff (and don't want to be in line behind people who do) and those people are lightening fast. They also have a "traffic cop" type who yells when a register becomes open. Granted, Costco is membership based while Walmart has to take all comers, but their own shitty practices & poor staffing make a bad situation even worse.

by Anonymousreply 26December 13, 2022 7:12 PM

Sorry OP - this doesn't even rank on the 'Top 100' problems with Walmart ! So much better problems to deal with (like the female cashiers who don't wear teeth or bras).

by Anonymousreply 27December 13, 2022 7:23 PM

[quote] Based on a 2018 study, retailers reported that employee theft amounted to 33.2% of inventory shrink.

[quote] On average, 5% of an organization’s revenue is lost to employee theft each year.

but yeah blame it on the self checkouts.

I usually get my beer at Walmart and self checkout is quicker, even if I have to flag down the worker to come verify my age. They usually only have a couple of non-self aisles open and people are lined up buying a ton of shit. And most of them are writing checks, getting their cards declined, or digging in their purses for exact change.

by Anonymousreply 29December 13, 2022 7:36 PM

Ahh the Quarterly self-checkout Eldergay debate!

by Anonymousreply 30December 14, 2022 1:22 AM

The seemingly dour cashiers at Walmart light up if you smile, ask how their day is going, and actually say thank you. Most customers are so indifferent towards the cashiers.

by Anonymousreply 31December 14, 2022 3:53 PM

Self checkout is not the problem. The staff who managed the self checkout section is the problem. They don't pay attention and are distracted. I totally understand why people are running wild.

by Anonymousreply 32December 14, 2022 4:01 PM

I'm proud to say that I've never stepped foot into a walmart nor have I ever purchased anything online from them.

Fuck them cunts.

by Anonymousreply 33December 14, 2022 4:17 PM

[quote]Anecdotally speaking: Walmart seems to have a larger area of self-checkout machines and only 1 person watching

R17 is correct. There is nothing wrong with having some self-checkout. I use it when I am getting just an item or two. Especially because stores are still so short staffed, there are frequently only two manned check out lines at my local Safeway.

The problem is my Safeway has 4 self-checkout kiosks with 1 person to watch. When I went to Walmart a few weeks ago (and used the self-checkout), they had at least 16, with a lone employee to supervise.

by Anonymousreply 34December 14, 2022 4:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 35December 14, 2022 4:21 PM

I’m so cynical in my dotage.

by Anonymousreply 36December 14, 2022 4:50 PM

Seriously, if self checkouts grieve people so much, they should just never step foot into another store as long as they fucking live.

by Anonymousreply 37December 14, 2022 4:53 PM

Every person using a self checkout is a person that is not standing in front of you at a manned checkout line. I don't get the hate, it is as rational as hating gay marriage, if you don't like them don't use them.

by Anonymousreply 38December 14, 2022 4:57 PM

Walmart announced recently they’re shuttering some stores due to high theft

by Anonymousreply 39December 14, 2022 5:06 PM

Our local Walmart, which I really try to avoid, recently reduced the number of manned checkout lanes from 24 to 4. They put in 30 self checkouts to replace them. The 4 manned checkouts are rarely manned.

by Anonymousreply 40December 14, 2022 5:22 PM

I avoid Walmart after a credit card was accidentally declined (the card company said it was a glitch) and they wouldn't accept a debit card or check on another account unless I signed an agreement stating that they would press charges if any problems. All this while a long line formed at checkout.

My Walmart's self-checkout is glitchy, and they are known for their "zero-tolerance" policy if you mess up. Again, they'll press charges.

Oh...and those in-your-face CCTV cameras at the entry? Facial recognition linked to a national database.

I understand that Walmart's ususal customers include a lot of problem people, I get it. But there are non-Big Brother alternatives out there.

by Anonymousreply 41December 14, 2022 5:38 PM

the only place i use self check out is CVS when I want to get rid of all my coins.

by Anonymousreply 42December 14, 2022 6:01 PM

Amazon has become a necessary evil. Thanks Walmart.

by Anonymousreply 43December 14, 2022 6:08 PM

Ordering for delivery is worse. Two Black Friday orders: one lost, one still forlornly, one imagines, waiting to be delivered from a local store. Every damn day they email me that delivery has been scheduled, then later that it’s been cancelled. They rely on Uber and Lyft drivers, so it’s who wants to pick up what and go where to deliver…and so far, no-one has.

They always sucked - or so people told me, because the only ones I’ve been to were in Mexico and there, anyway, WM is miles ahead of the local competition - and now AFAIC they suck even more.

by Anonymousreply 44December 14, 2022 6:10 PM

I have to have most of my Amazon orders shipped to my office or else sticky fingers will get it right off my steps. Heavier stuff like furniture and what have you is left alone.

by Anonymousreply 45December 14, 2022 6:13 PM

F self checkout. They make tons of money , they can Afford frickin cashiers. I refuse to bag my own groceries.

by Anonymousreply 46December 14, 2022 7:12 PM

You don't need to go inside Walmart to shop there. Since the pandemic begin, I've used their free curbside pickup service (mostly for groceries, but also for household items) NUMEROUS times with few problems. It's fast, free, efficient, and you never have to go inside to deal with the hordes of people or any of the checkout stands.

by Anonymousreply 47December 14, 2022 7:57 PM

The problem with Walmart is the general end-of-the-world vibe/decay of western civilization feeling for one thing. There is not a single one that I have gone to that does not reek of the vibe. Slovenly slack-jawed worker morons walk slowly around and watch the line at the service counter grow to twenty people while one gum-chewing slob processes whatever they are doing with the speed of a narcoleptic tree sloth. Generally, the stores are filthy, stacked with boxes in the aisles, and people stacking shit while you try to get around them. In 20 years, not ONE worker has asked me if I needed help or even acknowledged me as I walk by with even a head nod or a hello. The returns in the carts with food that sit for hours that require refrigeration behind the the service counter with one elderly person barely able to function picking up one item and staring at it for five minutes then putting it down.

It is late-stage capitalism as shown to all that can see it. Barely functioning workers, over-dependence on self-checkout, the grotesque thing that asks you for your receipt when you leave, the camera towers in the filthy parking lot with half the trees cut down, all benefiting a family of disgusting pig animals that pray to their pig god for more.

by Anonymousreply 48December 14, 2022 8:09 PM

[quote] Also, Walmart forces people with a lot of stuff into the the self C/O line because they don't staff enough cashiers & the lines are ridiculously long.

Yes. The WalMart near me has about 30 cash registers, but even during peak hours there are never more than 3 or 4 that are open. You're pretty much forced to use the self-checkouts. Recently, they remodeled the store. I figured they would get rid of some of the old cash registers to free up some space so they could improve the store layout and widen the aisles. Nope. All the old cash registers were left in place, a veritable ghost town in the front of the store.

by Anonymousreply 49December 14, 2022 8:22 PM

No, Labelle's pies are a WalMart exclusive. She will be traveling to stores over the next week doing taste tests.

by Anonymousreply 56December 15, 2022 1:01 AM

I'm not spending any more time in that damn store than I have to, and I'm sure as hell not standing in a fucking check-out line. They get rid of the self check-outs, I ain't fucking going back.

by Anonymousreply 57December 15, 2022 1:08 AM

[quote]Walmart's CEO has said the retailer may need to close down stores because of theft

LOL, where to begin with this bullshit article. Walmart makes a TON of money, ok? A few thefts a week at a supercenter is miniscule. That's just the CEO using mind control to make people start self policing their local Walmarts, so they don't have to spend money on it. Their "loss prevention" is usually senior aged greeters at the entrance marking people's receipt with a highlighter when they exit. Gurl please.

And furthermore, Walmart was never able to properly staff their check-outs. Target strives to keep their lines down to only two customers deep for that reason. Post-pandemic labor market, Walmart can FORGET about going back to mostly cashier check-out. Not enough people to fill those jobs.

by Anonymousreply 58December 15, 2022 1:23 AM

The reason there is so much theft through the self checkouts at Walmart is because they have too many stations in each self check corral and only 1 very poorly trained, uninterested, employee overseeing them. When things get busy there is no way 1 person can make sure all those customers aren't stealing. The Walmart nearest me has 2 self service corrals and each one has 10 checkout stations. The last time I was in there, about a week ago, it was in the middle of the day and the place was crawling and there was a line waiting to even get into the self service corral. The poor gal attending the corral was about to pull her hair out trying to fix fuckups by machines, help idiot old farts who had no idea how to use the self service machines and should have never tried to use one, and customers screaming that their packages would not scan.

by Anonymousreply 59December 15, 2022 1:37 AM

[quote]"Get rid of the self checkouts and watch the thefts decrease," she said.

by Anonymousreply 62December 15, 2022 1:51 AM

The bigger problem with Wal-Mart is how they LIE and say they are raising prices to combat shoplifting. Who is shoplifting when you have every person filmed from the moment they arrive in the parking lot? Who are these people getting away? Walmart uses facial recognition technology so they should be able to identify every customer.

by Anonymousreply 63December 15, 2022 3:07 AM

I love self-checkout. I can scan and bag my shit much faster than a cashier, and I don't get stuck in line behind some cunt who's still paying in cash or - god forbid - writing a fucking check like it's the 90s

by Anonymousreply 64December 15, 2022 3:09 AM

"And yet you've been going there, by your own admission, for 20 years. What does that say about YOU?"

Jesus, r51, you are a fucktard.

by Anonymousreply 65December 15, 2022 4:36 AM

R31 Can you imagine working at Walmart? When I go there, I do smile and chat a bit w/ the cashier. It doesn’t cost anything to be friendly.

The draw for me is being able to get a gallon of milk, some apples, a hair dryer, athletic socks, and birthday cards all at the same place.

by Anonymousreply 66December 15, 2022 4:57 AM

I remember the first time I walked into a Walmart Super Center. It seemed like a warehouse to me. And I thought "who the fuck is going to come to a grocery store and want to buy socks at the same place".....I stand corrected.

by Anonymousreply 67December 15, 2022 6:09 AM

99.9% off the time, if I have to go to Wally World, I go before 8am, and mainly on Sunday mornings before the church folk are released to run wild amongst the humans around 11am. Otherwise the place is a complete mad house. One thing that shocks me about WM is the number of people who only go there to socialize. I was informed of this by a lady who has worked there for many years. She said lots of people just come in because they're lonely, have nothing to do, and just walk around looking for people they know to talk to. I told her I thought that was so sad, but as she said "it is, but they take up a huge amount of space and make life hell for the shoppers because they bunch up with people they know and block the aisles".

by Anonymousreply 68December 15, 2022 12:37 PM

Walmart and others are now keeping security videos of self-checkout and actively reviewing them, then turning over the evidence to prosecute up to several months later. That's what needs to happen to crack down on the theft.

by Anonymousreply 70December 15, 2022 1:49 PM

UK guy here, I’ve never been to a Walmart but it’s certainly on my bucket list. Surely there must be some entertainment value in shopping at this place? From what I’ve read about it on here it sounds gloriously trashy, like a real life John Waters/Divine movie.

I’m not really surprised about the old folk going there just to socialise, they probably see it as like a shopping mall if they are so huge.

Yawn. Another triggered magat lashing out against a reasonable observation drawn from expert sources.

by Anonymousreply 86December 15, 2022 9:22 PM

I had the day off yesterday and went to Walmart at 7:30am. It was heavenly. Not many people shopping, and I was the youngest person there by decades. I got in, got all my shit, and self-checked-out. I was in and out within 15 minutes and didn't have to interact with anybody.

by Anonymousreply 87December 15, 2022 9:23 PM

Get over the MAGAt shit r86, I'm a liberal Democrat. It's just that I'm not paranoid about data collection. It's everywhere, all the time. Now go adjust your tinfoil hat.

I don't care who knows that I bought condoms at Rite Aid at 2:00am last Friday night.

by Anonymousreply 88December 15, 2022 9:25 PM

The problem with Walmart is Walmart. It's the lowliest of the low.

No matter the technique, the goldleaf of restoring self-checkout won't stick to the turd that is Walmart. There's no dressing it up.

by Anonymousreply 89December 15, 2022 9:29 PM

You type like a hostile magat, even if you're a "liberal." The point isn't about your individual purchases, it's about the aggregate of all consumer data being collected and used in ways you haven't even considered, without any oversight, restrictions, or ability to opt out. Of course it's being done but it shouldn't be and if you weren't so defeatist, you might give a shit to demand change and at minimum, alter your consumer habits.

by Anonymousreply 90December 15, 2022 9:32 PM

Oh STFU r90. Go look for black helicopters. They're coming to take you away!

by Anonymousreply 91December 15, 2022 9:55 PM

[quote]you might give a shit to demand change and at minimum, alter your consumer habits.

Don't hate me because I'm getting laid on the regular, bro. I don't care who knows I'm buying condoms.

by Anonymousreply 92December 15, 2022 9:56 PM

[quote]I use self checkout. Walmart items very often scan for the wrong price (higher) than posted

r71 I can't stand a bitch who holds up the line for an item that rang up for 5 cents more than it was marked. I wish the stores would make it mandatory to take that shit to a special service desk for cheap people, so the rest of us can get on with our lives.

by Anonymousreply 93December 15, 2022 11:26 PM

The problem with Walmart is the burden they place on the Sheriff's Office: when I used to go, there were usually two Sheriff's cars outside the local Walmart.

by Anonymousreply 94December 15, 2022 11:33 PM

r94 my local store, which is a massive location, has a whole police tower in the parking lot and cruisers out front. Its needed in a place with so many people, and the prevalence of mass shootings

by Anonymousreply 95December 15, 2022 11:43 PM

Buy one, get one free! Screw these price gouging assholes.

by Anonymousreply 96December 15, 2022 11:52 PM

All the stores now have gates at the entrances. It seems Walmart started it and now I see it at Kroger and Meijer too. I'm not sure if it's supposed to prevent theft or direct the flow of traffic.

I just wish they'd bring back the price check scanners in Walmart. The prices go up pretty much every week and the shelf tags can't keep up. You can use the shitty Walmart app to check a price, but sometimes there's no internet service in the store and sometimes if there's glare on the bar code it won't scan.

You can contact Walmart online to comment on your shopping experience, so I did and mentioned the hassle of the lack of price check scanners. I essentially got a "fank you for your concern" from both Corporate and the local manager.

by Anonymousreply 97December 16, 2022 12:08 AM

Further proof that Walmart greeters are worthless.

Nothing says "fuck my life" quite like that.

by Anonymousreply 98December 16, 2022 1:10 AM

[quote] I hate how those cashiers demand on putting one item in per bag. I usually have my own but if I don't I specifically say, "put everything in one bag." They don't. Why is that such an outrageous request? I really can't stand that store and only go if I need something other stores are out of.

Most people want the opposite. Bags break.

by Anonymousreply 99December 16, 2022 1:15 AM

Walmart greeters aren’t a thing in Philly.

by Anonymousreply 100December 16, 2022 1:16 AM

The problem with WalMart is none of the stores have an observation desk with a cocktail lounge.

by Anonymousreply 101December 16, 2022 1:16 AM

Even the lighting in Walmart is depressing. I don’t know how anyone can work in there. They must be desperate. It’s like working in a prison.

by Anonymousreply 102December 16, 2022 1:17 AM

Oh, boy.

r41 is a criminal.

by Anonymousreply 105December 16, 2022 1:33 AM

We don't seem to have the biometric stuff in Australia, thankfully.

by Anonymousreply 106December 16, 2022 3:11 AM

Why bother with Walmart’s checkout issues when it’s just simpler to walk out of the store with the items you liked and picked out?

by Anonymousreply 107December 16, 2022 3:51 AM

That biometric shit is EVERYWHERE. Places you don't even realize. It's unavoidable.

by Anonymousreply 108December 16, 2022 10:15 AM

I was self-scanning at Meijer's last week and the attendant came running up to tell me that the blueberries I bought just scanned at the wrong price. I was at the farthest checkout from the attendant station, she couldn't have seen what I was doing, so they apparently have some means to monitor what's going on. I'm sure they miss a lot, but I was pretty impressed with that. I had not noticed the price discrepancy.

by Anonymousreply 109December 16, 2022 10:24 AM

For s myriad of reasons, I went to s Walmart for an oil change. I had not been in a Walmart in years prior to this emergency visit.

I went to the actual store and it was as dreary and depressing as I thought it would be. None of the prices were low enough to justify a purchase.

by Anonymousreply 110December 16, 2022 10:41 AM

[quote]Walmart and others are now keeping security videos of self-checkout and actively reviewing them, then turning over the evidence to prosecute up to several months later.

I read this in the voice of Principal McGee from Grease, when she warned the "mooners" that they were being sought by the FBI.

by Anonymousreply 111December 16, 2022 11:28 AM

I think that greeters in supermarkets are an American thing, we don’t have that in the UK. I think it’s a good thing as it gives the old folks work if they want it, and in the wintertime they can keep warm for free whilst at work. And of course it gets them out of the house.

by Anonymousreply 112December 16, 2022 11:48 AM

Walmart got rid of greeters many years ago.

by Anonymousreply 113December 16, 2022 12:33 PM

I live over in Memphis, TN and the overall crime rate here is very, very high so it's different. In Memphis there are sadly some people who will just take a bunch of crap in their arms and bolt out the door past the armed security guard (who more than likely was bribed the week prior to look the other way). Then you have the actual innocents who are honestly trying to scan their stuff but take a bit too long and it activates a "thingy" which leads to an employee either thinking the customer is a criminal or is stupid. Such things I have noticed in line at the Kroger grocery store waiting for the cashier to ring me up because I'm neither a criminal nor an innocent, just someone with bad eyesight who has the time and patience to just wait in line old school.

Wal-Mart is huge in the south. I find it somewhat odd and try to avoid it. My wife digs it but she's from Middle Tennessee and Target and Wal-Mart are big there. I like that with the Farmers Market and Big Lots because it's more friendly in a way and lends to one being a bit creative with ingredients for meals and cleaning supplies and such.

by Anonymousreply 114December 16, 2022 12:37 PM

[quote]All the stores now have gates at the entrances. It seems Walmart started it and now I see it at Kroger and Meijer too. I'm not sure if it's supposed to prevent theft or direct the flow of traffic.

I think they were a result of Covid. The gates count the number of people in the store. I remember the long lines of people waiting outside the stores in 2020 when they had to reduce the number of people in the store at a given a time.

by Anonymousreply 115December 17, 2022 10:39 AM

I usually don’t mind waiting in line at the market. It gives me a chance to look at the tabloids. I don’t buy them, mind you, but I will read the headlines.

And, because I’m a nosy bitch, I like looking at what other people buy.

by Anonymousreply 116December 17, 2022 11:16 AM

Shoplifting at Walmart is like robbing a library for overdue fees.

by Anonymousreply 117December 17, 2022 11:27 AM

It has occurred to me that some of the security guards are in on the grift.

by Anonymousreply 118December 17, 2022 12:29 PM

[R118] Especially when it's their nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles, godchildren, brothers, sisters, mother, father, etc. who are doing the grifting.

I had a neighbor who worked at WalMart part time (she had taken a small loan out to replace her boiler, and figured a part-time job as a cashier at WalMart for about a year would pay her loan back). The only one in our city is about 5 miles away, in a skanky neighborhood - but they hired her on the spot. The stories she came back with were unbelievable. She did say the #1 items which were stolen were baby items (diapers, formula, food, clothes, toys) , hair products for 'women of color', and shoes and sneakers for everyone. Stuff used to walk right out of the store. She made the money she needed in about nine months - the day she made her last payment on her loan, she quit. I miss her stories !

by Anonymousreply 119December 17, 2022 6:05 PM

I’ve witnessed this happen r119. Some folks go in there with a buddy system type of setup. And telling on them won’t help because it’s your word against theirs. Not to mention the potential for a fistfight in the parking lot. I’m too old to fight in the street like that.

by Anonymousreply 120December 17, 2022 11:43 PM

R90- I doubt they allow this data collection in Europe.

by Anonymousreply 121December 18, 2022 12:24 AM

What, you fat whores all expect flattering amber lighting and a fucking concierge for your $5.47 fashion ensemble?

It's cheap shit made cheaply, sold cheaply and handled by either automation or poorly paid peons so that you can have enough money left to waddle over to the Subway or McDonalds and feed your gaping maw.

by Anonymousreply 124December 20, 2022 7:37 PM
