What is your favorite? Least favorite?
I love Bordeaux. I am not a fan of Rose. It is way too sweet for me. I feel like I am drinking syrup.

Rosé can be sweet or dry. I'm guessing there are some really good rosé wines out there.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 13, 2022 3:04 AM |
Agree about rose - it's horrid. I drink a lot of wine and - pretty much anything except the absolute bottom shelf stuff. I prefer red for sure though.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 13, 2022 3:04 AM |
The choice of wine always depends on the food(s) with which it will be served.
Rich, roasted meats = Cote Rotie, Hermitage, or a robust pinot noir from the Russian River Valley.
Seafood = White Chateauneuf du Pape, Condrieu, or a top-shelf Vouvray.
Vegatable dishes = Something lighter, like a GOOD Chardonnay (too many BAD ones out there to mention), a Vouvray, or a Chablis.
Wine that will go with EVERYTHING = Beaujolais.

I want to buy a friend an xmas gift. he loves white wine. can you please recommend something? not cheap but not crazy expensive. my budget is between 50-100 bucks. pinot grigio recommendations please
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 13, 2022 3:14 AM |
OP is being quite pinky-out with the depth of the judgment on Rosé.
For Bordeaux, unsurprisingly, I'll take any Pauillac or Saint Julien from 1982, those and any Pomerol from 1990. I don't mind being presented with a fine Burgundy, but I lack the patience to taste around.
Least favorite? Strawberry Hill Kiwi and Passion Fruit.

I never used to like white wine, but I love Sauvignon Blanc now. Aldi's Exquisite Collection is really good and only 10 bucks. Their Evanta Malbec is my cooking wine and it's drinkable for 4.50.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 13, 2022 5:10 AM |
I generally like white over red. I love sweet, & Gewurtztraminer is my fave.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 13, 2022 6:42 AM |
Rose can be dry.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 13, 2022 6:44 AM |
R10, are you also R2?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 13, 2022 6:46 AM |
Sparkling, my favorite is Schramsburg J Schram Brut Rose. You can serve with almost anything except dessert. Not a sweet wine.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 13, 2022 6:48 AM |
Poussay Foussay.
Pairs excellent with loin du bouef curtain.

I don't miss liquor. I do even miss beer a little bit.
But I miss wine. It's been years, but damn do I miss wine. Not the buzz (that I don't miss at all), just the taste. I loved full bodied reds. Any would do.
If I ever choose to drink again, some fancy Syrah will be my poison.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 13, 2022 7:37 AM |
*DON'T even miss beer...^^^

My 3 favs at the moment:
Stoneleigh Rapaura Marlborough Chardonnay, from the top of the South Island, NZ.
Mud House Waipara Valley Pinot Gris, from dry old Canterbury. The climate is made for it.
Grant Burge Fifth Generation Cabernet Merlot 2021 - fruity, oaky, and woody. Can't get enough of it, but my wallet can. Fuck it, xmas is coming.

what are you guys drinking now?
cheers!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 26, 2023 10:05 PM |
I used to dislike Roses, but I tried some French bottles that were drier and much better.
Love Crozes-Hermitage and cab-based Bordeauxs, though they tend to be much more expensive than the merlot-based bottles.
Also enjoy Priorat, Primitivo, Barolo.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 26, 2023 10:18 PM |
Half a Quaalude with a bottle of California Chardonnay was my go to.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 26, 2023 10:30 PM |
anyone drinking white wine?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 26, 2023 10:34 PM |
I drink mostly dry red wine (my faves are cabernet sauvignon, malbec and syrah) except Chianti which will suck every bit of mosture from your mouth, it's just too dry.
In the summer I like some white though, but generally always buy Chardonnay.

Would you like to come down to see it?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 25, 2023 4:40 PM |
R23 don't give away your champagne. Drink it! Get it frosty cold and drink it with: salty snacks such as chips, or creamy pasta, or fish and chips. The buzz in the middle of the second glass is great.

Rose has become a favorite for me. I am left to wonder if those who are bashing rose for being syrupy sweet must actually be drinking American white zinfandels believing them to be rose. Those white zins are nasty stuff. May I suggest you look for a nice mid-priced French rose from the Provence region and see how you like it? A very nice mid-priced American rose is made by Daou Vineyards of Paso Robles. I do believe you'll change your mind about this wonderful variety.

Champagne is SO fucking expensive now. A bottle of Veuve in the 2000s used to be @ $30, now it's $70. Is it going to stay that high, or can we expect it to come down? They can keep it at that price. I'd rather drink a decent prosecco.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 26, 2023 1:24 AM |
I love Cabernet Franc, but really can’t afford it.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 26, 2023 4:23 AM |
R34, I too think champagne has gone through the roof. What kind of Prosecco is decent and for a good price? I’m in the US, though. By the way , there was a shortage of wine being made this year, worldwide, due to low crop yield. Bummah!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 26, 2023 4:27 AM |
Why not just get some California sparkling wine, like Chandon? They made their label ugly, but I think you can buy it for under $30.

There are many wines made by méthode champenoise - the same method as champagne. These include some California bubblies, as well as Australians. Cava from Spain. Franciacorta from Italy. (And NOT Prosecco, which is a different method). Cremant from France. And a few bubblies from Switzerland and Austria.
So your choice of a less expensive bubbly is not limited to Prosecco (not that there's anything wrong with Prosecco!)
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 26, 2023 7:03 AM |
I fucking hate Prosecco.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 26, 2023 7:19 AM |
Thai and Riesling
Italian and Chianti
Seafood and Chardonnay
Japanese and hot Sake
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 26, 2023 7:25 AM |
Also in Europe there are dozens of Champagne brands that never make it overseas, for 15-20 bucks. Seeing as you can get a delicious California bubbly for the same price, there is no point and no market.

Lawson's Dry Hills Pinot Gris is another nice one.

Ad Roger Guolart for spanish Cava.
There are a number of bio/organic bubblies on the market now one Europe, but not sure about the states.

I would recommend the Costco / Kirkland red wines. The prices are all reasonable. If you don't like it, you haven't spent much. You can also return it if you feel that strongly about it.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 27, 2023 4:12 AM |
Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs is a nice sparkling you can get for $30-40.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 27, 2023 7:07 AM |
Albariño is my usual.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 30, 2023 11:07 AM |
I like a light red -not rosé - that can be chilled on warmer days. If I’m going to have a nice meal and a traditional red, a Petit Verdot always works well. Not too tannic.
My current favorite … the Chill Red from Star Party.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 30, 2023 12:51 PM |
R36 I'm generally happy with just something like La Marca ($20), but I'm not that picky when it comes to prosecco. You can spend a lot more than that on it.

I also like French Chardonnay.
And I love Sancerre.
And please include me in the crisp French Rosé camp. What could be nicer than a glass of Rosé with lunch in the garden?

Or a really non robust pinot noir.
Or a Chardonnay. Two buck chuck works fine.
Or anything, really.
You know, what, just give me the damn bottle of cough syrup and leave me the fuck alone.
