Wine

Let's discuss wine.

What is your favorite? Least favorite?

I love Bordeaux. I am not a fan of Rose. It is way too sweet for me. I feel like I am drinking syrup.

by Anonymousreply 81February 2, 2024 3:15 AM

"I love box wine" - DL

by Anonymousreply 1December 13, 2022 3:00 AM

[quote] I am not a fan of Rose. It is way too sweet for me. I feel like I am drinking syrup.

Rosé can be sweet or dry. I'm guessing there are some really good rosé wines out there.

by Anonymousreply 2December 13, 2022 3:04 AM

Agree about rose - it's horrid. I drink a lot of wine and - pretty much anything except the absolute bottom shelf stuff. I prefer red for sure though.

by Anonymousreply 3December 13, 2022 3:04 AM

The choice of wine always depends on the food(s) with which it will be served.

Rich, roasted meats = Cote Rotie, Hermitage, or a robust pinot noir from the Russian River Valley.

Seafood = White Chateauneuf du Pape, Condrieu, or a top-shelf Vouvray.

Vegatable dishes = Something lighter, like a GOOD Chardonnay (too many BAD ones out there to mention), a Vouvray, or a Chablis.

Wine that will go with EVERYTHING = Beaujolais.

by Anonymousreply 4December 13, 2022 3:11 AM

I want to buy a friend an xmas gift. he loves white wine. can you please recommend something? not cheap but not crazy expensive. my budget is between 50-100 bucks. pinot grigio recommendations please

by Anonymousreply 5December 13, 2022 3:14 AM

OP is being quite pinky-out with the depth of the judgment on Rosé.

For Bordeaux, unsurprisingly, I'll take any Pauillac or Saint Julien from 1982, those and any Pomerol from 1990. I don't mind being presented with a fine Burgundy, but I lack the patience to taste around.

Least favorite? Strawberry Hill Kiwi and Passion Fruit.

by Anonymousreply 6December 13, 2022 3:20 AM

r4 = DL's aspiring official sommelier.

by Anonymousreply 7December 13, 2022 4:42 AM

I never used to like white wine, but I love Sauvignon Blanc now. Aldi's Exquisite Collection is really good and only 10 bucks. Their Evanta Malbec is my cooking wine and it's drinkable for 4.50.

by Anonymousreply 8December 13, 2022 5:10 AM

I generally like white over red. I love sweet, & Gewurtztraminer is my fave.

by Anonymousreply 9December 13, 2022 6:42 AM

Rose can be dry.

by Anonymousreply 10December 13, 2022 6:44 AM

R10, are you also R2?

by Anonymousreply 11December 13, 2022 6:46 AM

Sparkling, my favorite is Schramsburg J Schram Brut Rose. You can serve with almost anything except dessert. Not a sweet wine.

by Anonymousreply 12December 13, 2022 6:48 AM

Poussay Foussay.

Pairs excellent with loin du bouef curtain.

by Anonymousreply 13December 13, 2022 6:50 AM

I am my own person, r11. Not r2.

by Anonymousreply 14December 13, 2022 7:08 AM

I don't miss liquor. I do even miss beer a little bit.

But I miss wine. It's been years, but damn do I miss wine. Not the buzz (that I don't miss at all), just the taste. I loved full bodied reds. Any would do.

If I ever choose to drink again, some fancy Syrah will be my poison.

by Anonymousreply 15December 13, 2022 7:37 AM

*DON'T even miss beer...^^^

by Anonymousreply 16December 13, 2022 7:38 AM

My 3 favs at the moment:

Stoneleigh Rapaura Marlborough Chardonnay, from the top of the South Island, NZ.

Mud House Waipara Valley Pinot Gris, from dry old Canterbury. The climate is made for it.

Grant Burge Fifth Generation Cabernet Merlot 2021 - fruity, oaky, and woody. Can't get enough of it, but my wallet can. Fuck it, xmas is coming.

by Anonymousreply 17December 13, 2022 7:58 AM

what are you guys drinking now?

cheers!

by Anonymousreply 18April 26, 2023 10:05 PM

I used to dislike Roses, but I tried some French bottles that were drier and much better.

Love Crozes-Hermitage and cab-based Bordeauxs, though they tend to be much more expensive than the merlot-based bottles.

Also enjoy Priorat, Primitivo, Barolo.

by Anonymousreply 19April 26, 2023 10:18 PM

Half a Quaalude with a bottle of California Chardonnay was my go to.

by Anonymousreply 20April 26, 2023 10:30 PM

anyone drinking white wine?

by Anonymousreply 21April 26, 2023 10:34 PM

I drink mostly dry red wine (my faves are cabernet sauvignon, malbec and syrah) except Chianti which will suck every bit of mosture from your mouth, it's just too dry.

In the summer I like some white though, but generally always buy Chardonnay.

by Anonymousreply 22April 26, 2023 11:00 PM

what about champagne? someone gave me a moet nectar imperial. wonder if I should drink it or give away.

by Anonymousreply 23December 25, 2023 3:40 PM

I'm half-Italian and own a house in Napa but I hate wine.

by Anonymousreply 24December 25, 2023 3:42 PM

I get the aldi brand moscato

by Anonymousreply 25December 25, 2023 4:28 PM

Sangria

by Anonymousreply 26December 25, 2023 4:39 PM

I have a cask of Amontillado in my cellar.

Would you like to come down to see it?

by Anonymousreply 27December 25, 2023 4:40 PM

R23 don't give away your champagne. Drink it! Get it frosty cold and drink it with: salty snacks such as chips, or creamy pasta, or fish and chips. The buzz in the middle of the second glass is great.

by Anonymousreply 28December 25, 2023 4:47 PM

Rose has become a favorite for me. I am left to wonder if those who are bashing rose for being syrupy sweet must actually be drinking American white zinfandels believing them to be rose. Those white zins are nasty stuff. May I suggest you look for a nice mid-priced French rose from the Provence region and see how you like it? A very nice mid-priced American rose is made by Daou Vineyards of Paso Robles. I do believe you'll change your mind about this wonderful variety.

by Anonymousreply 29December 25, 2023 7:17 PM

[quote] Sangria

Sangria isn't a type of wine. It's a punch made with wine.

by Anonymousreply 30December 25, 2023 7:26 PM

[quote]The choice of wine always depends on the food(s) with which it will be served.

Wait, food? What food? There's supposed to be FOOD???

by Anonymousreply 31December 25, 2023 7:27 PM

R29, thank you and I will definitely look for it

by Anonymousreply 32December 25, 2023 11:56 PM

6had dry white tonight t9 pair best with my mango edibles.

by Anonymousreply 33December 26, 2023 12:01 AM

Champagne is SO fucking expensive now. A bottle of Veuve in the 2000s used to be @ $30, now it's $70. Is it going to stay that high, or can we expect it to come down? They can keep it at that price. I'd rather drink a decent prosecco.

by Anonymousreply 34December 26, 2023 1:24 AM

I love Cabernet Franc, but really can’t afford it.

by Anonymousreply 35December 26, 2023 4:23 AM

R34, I too think champagne has gone through the roof. What kind of Prosecco is decent and for a good price? I’m in the US, though. By the way , there was a shortage of wine being made this year, worldwide, due to low crop yield. Bummah!

by Anonymousreply 36December 26, 2023 4:27 AM

Why not just get some California sparkling wine, like Chandon? They made their label ugly, but I think you can buy it for under $30.

by Anonymousreply 37December 26, 2023 5:44 AM

[quote] I am not a fan of Rose. It is way too sweet for me. I feel like I am drinking syrup.

Mmmmmmm... drinking syrup... *drools*

by Anonymousreply 38December 26, 2023 6:05 AM

There are many wines made by méthode champenoise - the same method as champagne. These include some California bubblies, as well as Australians. Cava from Spain. Franciacorta from Italy. (And NOT Prosecco, which is a different method). Cremant from France. And a few bubblies from Switzerland and Austria.

So your choice of a less expensive bubbly is not limited to Prosecco (not that there's anything wrong with Prosecco!)

by Anonymousreply 39December 26, 2023 7:03 AM

I fucking hate Prosecco.

by Anonymousreply 40December 26, 2023 7:19 AM

Thai and Riesling

Italian and Chianti

Seafood and Chardonnay

Japanese and hot Sake

by Anonymousreply 41December 26, 2023 7:25 AM

Also in Europe there are dozens of Champagne brands that never make it overseas, for 15-20 bucks. Seeing as you can get a delicious California bubbly for the same price, there is no point and no market.

by Anonymousreply 42December 26, 2023 7:28 AM

This winter I've been into Monbazillac.

by Anonymousreply 43December 26, 2023 7:30 AM

Anyone have any advice for me? I really like wine but find it too acidic for my stomach?

St. Emilion Grand Cru.

End thread.

by Anonymousreply 46December 26, 2023 9:26 AM

Brought Mud House Pinot Gris for my mum this Christmas r17. Her favourite.

Lawson's Dry Hills Pinot Gris is another nice one.

I've been getting into dry Pinot Gris at the moment, but still love a good Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc.

by Anonymousreply 47December 26, 2023 9:27 AM

*Bought

by Anonymousreply 48December 26, 2023 9:27 AM

R39, can you recommend a few please? thanks so much for your information

by Anonymousreply 49December 26, 2023 10:10 PM

R39 what country are you in? Do you like extra dry (no sugar), dry, or Demi-sec (a bit of sugar)? What is your budget per bottle?

by Anonymousreply 50December 27, 2023 1:38 AM

You could try Gruet from New Mexico.

Ménage a trois red blend.

by Anonymousreply 53December 27, 2023 1:58 AM

love that r53

by Anonymousreply 54December 27, 2023 2:14 AM

Yes - R53, that is my jam❤️! Also, I love Kung Fu Riesling with Chicken Krapow - the blend is pertetto❤️.

by Anonymousreply 55December 27, 2023 3:28 AM

*perfetto!

by Anonymousreply 56December 27, 2023 3:29 AM

Roses are exquisite. Paumanok on the north fork of Long Island does a beautiful one which is sumptuous with minerality. Very dry.

by Anonymousreply 57December 27, 2023 3:37 AM

2 Buck Chuck

by Anonymousreply 58December 27, 2023 3:54 AM

What about Thunderbird?

by Anonymousreply 59December 27, 2023 4:02 AM

I would recommend the Costco / Kirkland red wines. The prices are all reasonable. If you don't like it, you haven't spent much. You can also return it if you feel that strongly about it.

by Anonymousreply 60December 27, 2023 4:12 AM

Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs is a nice sparkling you can get for $30-40.

by Anonymousreply 61December 27, 2023 7:07 AM

Albariño is my usual.

by Anonymousreply 62December 30, 2023 11:07 AM

I like a light red -not rosé - that can be chilled on warmer days. If I’m going to have a nice meal and a traditional red, a Petit Verdot always works well. Not too tannic.

My current favorite … the Chill Red from Star Party.

R36 I'm generally happy with just something like La Marca ($20), but I'm not that picky when it comes to prosecco. You can spend a lot more than that on it.

by Anonymousreply 64January 22, 2024 2:24 AM

It is wine!

by Anonymousreply 65January 22, 2024 2:27 AM

A nice crisp French Rosé is delicious during the summer months.

Review on Trip Advisor of Eric's Porter-Haus restaurant in Waukesha, Wisconsin:

I love to drink a good Barolo.

I also like French Chardonnay.

And I love Sancerre.

And please include me in the crisp French Rosé camp. What could be nicer than a glass of Rosé with lunch in the garden?

by Anonymousreply 68January 22, 2024 2:40 AM

I really like Rose Gold Rosé and Rombauer Chardonnay. There are a lot of red wines I like but don’t have a favorite.

by Anonymousreply 69January 22, 2024 2:41 AM

Hi, Greg.

by Anonymousreply 70January 22, 2024 2:41 AM

Hello, R70.

by Anonymousreply 71January 22, 2024 2:47 AM

My favorite red: Kirkland Caberney Sauvignon at Costco.

by Anonymousreply 72January 22, 2024 2:51 AM

[quote] Caberney

Holy shit.

by Anonymousreply 73January 22, 2024 2:54 AM

crisp French Rosé

Any recommendations?

by Anonymousreply 74January 22, 2024 3:55 PM

what are we drinking these days?

by Anonymousreply 75February 1, 2024 8:24 PM

Motown Kadet

by Anonymousreply 76February 1, 2024 8:29 PM

nobody drinking?

by Anonymousreply 77February 1, 2024 11:38 PM

Oooh wine! Grape juice that burns!

by Anonymousreply 78February 2, 2024 12:25 AM

Vinho Verde, always.

Recently my favorite splurge has been British sparkling.

by Anonymousreply 79February 2, 2024 1:15 AM

I keep a gallon jug of Carlo Rossi sangria in the fridge in case of company.

by Anonymousreply 80February 2, 2024 1:20 AM

When I drank, I loved a really robust pinot noir. Especially with a steak.

Or a really non robust pinot noir.

Or a Chardonnay. Two buck chuck works fine.

Or anything, really.

You know, what, just give me the damn bottle of cough syrup and leave me the fuck alone.
