The Golden Globes, which are still a thing, announce nominations

Largely boring list, no real surprises. Why do we need this awards ceremony again?

Same people get nominations year after year. No surprises.

Seems like they were trying to go populist with Top Gun, Avatar 2, and Elvis all nominated in picture as well as the Yellowstone nods.

Best Non-English language film. How very woke of you HFPA.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 12, 2022 1:20 PM |
So I guess the Globes are uncancelled now that the HFPA has hired black members and I guess all nominated people will have to attend now that a multiple box checker is hosting.

It was always going to come back. Why would Hollywood get rid of a vehicle to promote their product? Why would they deny themselves an opportunity to campaign for the Oscars?
Save Brendan Fraser, every single nominee is going to show up.

Who Ana de Armas fuck for her nomination?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 12, 2022 1:33 PM |
Ana de Armas still seems like she'll be the next entry on the "was expected to be a star" list.

Rooting for Bill Hader and Barry. Surprised NoHo Hank didn’t get a nomination for supporting. He was great,

I guess Whoopie is not going to be too happy on 'The View' today, with "Till" (which took her 11 years to make) was shut out at the Golden Globes. Personally, I'm surprised it didn't get best director, best film, and best actress in a leading role.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 12, 2022 2:18 PM |
Isn’t Emma D’Arcy one of those “they/them” people? Are they upset with being in the Actress category?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 12, 2022 2:32 PM |
No love for TimoTay not even at the Globes. He was supposed to be the movie star of his generation.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 12, 2022 2:42 PM |
WHen I saw Viola Davis nominated for the Woman King I laughed out loud. I took my nieces to see it and what an great example of miscasting! She looked ridiculous! Way too old. ANd John Boyega was terrible. There was some good actors in the movie, African actors. Very good ones. And it was a pretty good story, but...no.
I'm tired of Michelle Williams. I don't like her. Never did. She will always be Alma Del Mar to me. I'm thinking Olivia Coleman and Cate Blanchett be competitive. Surprised Jessica Chastain didn't get a nomination.
I have tried to watch Only Murders. I have. But I just cannot get into it and it definitely didn't deserve any nominations.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 12, 2022 2:46 PM |
R26: Chastain did get a nomination albeit undeserved in my view for George & Tammy.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 12, 2022 3:00 PM |
Viola Davis is overrated as fuck. If she had been snubbed for The Woman King, she would have bitched about critics or people not liking her performance like she did when The First Lady miniseries was a flop. That was another major Viola Davis miscasting. I think she will be secretly pissed at The Golden Globes when they do the bes actress in a limited series category because Lily James did a terrific performance of Pamela Anderson which critics liked, but Viola's portrayal of Michelle Obama was widely panned. Viola produced that miniseries in hopes that it would get award nominations and critics would kiss her feet. It didn't work at all she has zero ability to play the warmth of Michelle Obama. I wouldn't put it past Viola to make the same mistake in the future with her producing/developing a project about a real life woman and casting herself and the result is terrible. Viola is very arrogant woman.

So Ana De Armas took the slot of Danielle Deadwyler? Surprising as "Till" is at 98% on RT.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 12, 2022 6:57 PM |
Also surprising because Deadwyler is an infinitely better actress than De Armas.

R58 I thought he wasn't allowed to be nominated for 10 years?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 12, 2022 11:14 PM |
R49 Even if that's true, no one knows or cares about her to confirm if that's true or not. Ana de Armas has been part of several high-profile movies between the Bond series, Knives Out, and now Blonde. Deadwyler who? Then again, I'd rather have her nominated than overrated Viola.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 12, 2022 11:15 PM |
R62 God you’re slow.
He can be nominated. He can’t attend
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 12, 2022 11:15 PM |
R36 I have so much respect for Lupita for not partaking in a project that whitewashed history. She didn't approve of the false narrative that it was whites selling the black slaves as presented in the movie. Viola clearly didn't mind hiding the truth that it was fellow blacks who sold the slaves because her audience would never accept the truth based on the platform and image she's built for herself.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 12, 2022 11:16 PM |
R64 What a joke. I thought the 10 year ban was bad enough, only a slap on the wrist when he really deserved a lifetime ban. Anyway he's never going to be nominated anyway for this.

by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 12, 2022 11:28 PM |
As expected, 'The View' didn't mention the GG nominations at all today - probably the first time in the show's 26 years. Whenever nominations for a major awards show are announced, the hosts always talk about it and which nominees were surprises, and which were snubbed. They steered clear away from that conversation this morning.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 12, 2022 11:37 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 13, 2022 12:50 AM |
My guess is only B listers will attend.
They blew it by not nominating Tom. Cruise and Julia Roberts. The last big movie stars.
Yes, they threw Julia a bone for her TV project that no one watched, but J doubt she will attend. Only greedy people will attend.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 13, 2022 1:06 AM |

Most of the nominations look okay to me especially in television. If those 5 dramatic movies were nominated for the Oscars, more people might watch the shows. I think nominating Tom Cruise would have been weird. I hope some big names attend the show because it used to be fun.

by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 13, 2022 1:50 AM |
R93 That desperate soul will go anywhere she thinks they will bestow adulation and awards on her. Can't wait to see her reaction when she doesn't win...she's not good enough an actress to hide her feelings just like she couldn't when she got rightfully lambasted by the media for her horrendous performance as Michelle Obama.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 13, 2022 4:45 AM |
You know, when you're not pretty, but can do things to make yourself red carpet attractive, and then you start getting old, you get very desperate if you're in Hollywood. And Viola came to prominence late in her career and she is way too thirsty for validation. She does not want to get old, does not want the merry go round to stop. Too bad. IMO her best was Ma Rainey.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | December 13, 2022 5:07 AM |
Pedestrian, predictable, completely banal choices—why anyone bothers investing their time in these calculated, self-satisfied awards ceremonies is beyond me. These people win based on campaigns and underhanded favors/loads to the face. It's rarely ever purely based on the actor's performance. The whole thing is ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 13, 2022 5:33 AM |
R97, essentially: “I analyzed these nominations and judged them to be pedestrian, predictable and banal. Also, if you take any time thinking about these awards, you’re an idiot.”

Emma D'Arcy was nominated but not Paddy Considine for House of the Dragons?
Congrats to Evan Peters, Niecy Nash and Richard Jenkins for Dahmer, well deserved.
Shocked by no nominations for Till or DeadWyler. Did they even bother watching the film?
I like Tom Cruise but I knew Golden Globes wasn't gonna nominate him but they instead nominated the movie.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 13, 2022 6:27 AM |
R87, Since when were the Golden Globes, always considered a precursor to the Academy Awards, "a joke"? Maybe in your mind.
A host's intro wisecracking, or being slapped, at whatever awards show for whatever medium, doesn't diminish the actual awards.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | December 13, 2022 9:20 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 101 | December 13, 2022 9:21 AM |
Yes r101 . I will give them credit for at least hiring an interesting, offbeat host with Jarrod Carmichael. For the Oscars to go with Jimmy Kimmel is the laziest possible choice.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | December 13, 2022 10:33 AM |
I always thought Ellen was one of the best Oscar hosts. I liked Steve Martin too. Kimmel's...OK. Whoopie was very good. I sometimes watch Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's intro on the GG. They were the best.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 13, 2022 10:54 AM |
Tina and Amy were great hosts that night but have been awful in everything else since.
Whoopi can't physically do it anymore, which is a blessing. I think she'd be awful now.

A GG win does statistically increase your value as an actor, it does have value. There have been academic studies. I cannot remember if it correlates to an Oscar win, but this might have been conducted with data before the overtly politically correct wins...
by Anonymous | reply 106 | December 13, 2022 11:37 AM |
[Quote] Indeed, at least in terms of box-office receipts, the Globes might matter a whole lot for actors — maybe even more than the Oscars do, according to an analysis from data scientist Edmund Helmer for Reuters.
Helmer found that on average, Golden Globe winners receive a bigger boost at the box office than Oscar victors: about $14.2 million per film versus $3 million.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | December 13, 2022 11:41 AM |
They should go offbeat and hire a fun, quirky host like Elvira, Mistress of the Dark or John Waters or even Chris "Corky" Burke!
by Anonymous | reply 109 | December 13, 2022 11:44 AM |
It's a step in the Oscars campaign so that's its value. The merit of the award itself is pretty junky. The show was fun to watch. Not sure if it will continue to be if the stars aren't going to show up or do but will be too image conscious to freewheel it like they used to. Can they let loose when there will inevitably be backlash against the hfpa?
by Anonymous | reply 110 | December 13, 2022 11:47 AM |
R106 I imagine it would also help winners gain momentum going into the rest of awards season, especially if they give good and memorable speeches.

That Lady Gaga song is fucking atrocious and bombed. Why are they nominating it for all these awards? And she did some of the score for Top Gun? Ahahahahahahahaha please. She can’t write music. She can barely write decent lyrics without significant help from others.
I always enjoy the GG noms and feel they are usually better than other awards. I feel they nominate some really deserving, but often overlooked, people. Their noms usually closely track the noms of other major awards anyway with some outliers. They’ve been considered serious since the early 90s after being a bit of a joke before.

Some times they embarrass themselves by nominating shite, examples that come to mind are Angelina and Depp in "The Tourist", also nominated for Best Picture even though it was awful.
Kate Hudson a couple of years ago in a movie that everyone hates and insulted people with disabilities.
They have made some good choices though which arguably helped underdogs make it to an Oscar nomination

The Critics Choice Awards, which have desperately wanted to replace the Globes as the televised Oscar precursor for years, released their nomination list today. They basically nominated everyone who might be in contention for the Oscars, including ten people for director, so if you really want choices that are truly pedestrian, predictable and completely banal, here you go.

The Globes people are smart in that they don't always pic the same winners as the Oscars and Emmys do.
If you've won those, a GG doesn't much but if you lose at the Oscars and Emmys and win at the GG's, then you're a winner.

pic = pick

No nominations for Mr. Styles?
by Anonymous | reply 140 | December 14, 2022 3:26 PM |
Ana de Armas is vapid, overrated and most likely slept her way to the top
by Anonymous | reply 141 | December 14, 2022 3:28 PM |
Yeah the Globes are good for spreading recognition, especially for TV. Emmys and SAG are notorious for either overlooking a great performance or rewarding the same person over and over.

Judy Garland
Michelle Pfeiffer
Glenn Close
Judy Davis
Sigourney Weaver
Annette Benning
Kathleen Turner
Amy Adams
Marsha Mason
All of these actresses have been denied Oscars…but won Golden Globes….so yes, they have value.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | December 14, 2022 8:51 PM |
R144, exactly; and the GG's know it.
it is so smart of them to pick people/shows who don't have other awards
Party of Five won Best TV drama at GG's in 96;
ER won best drama at the Emmys and PO5 wasn't even nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | December 14, 2022 9:11 PM |
Thank you, r38!
by Anonymous | reply 146 | December 15, 2022 1:46 PM |
Yeah, Party of 5, great show.
Also, good on the Golden Globes for nominating grande dame Jessica Alba.

I actually think Till's lack of awards is a direct, intentional slap at Whoopi Goldberg. She comes across as a total bitch, even to her colleagues on the View.
As a member of the Academy she had a lot to do with this year's all black ceremony, and we all know how that turned out.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | December 20, 2022 10:20 PM |
Nah, Till just isn’t very good and only slightly above a Hallmark or Lifetime movie.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | December 20, 2022 11:09 PM |
A no name diversity hire host and it's on a Tuesday night. Who did they think is going to watch this?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | January 3, 2023 5:30 PM |
A gay black male is hosting, a black guy is receiving the Cecil B. Demille award, and a gay man is receiving the Carol Burnett award. God they're so terrified they'll be taken off the air again.

I hope "Top Gun: Maverick" wins Best Motion Picutre - Drama just for the hell of it.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | January 3, 2023 6:19 PM |
Cruise returned his Golden Globes to HFPA. It won’t.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | January 3, 2023 6:46 PM |
R58, Your husband is wrong, and you will laugh. The Slap precludes WS's getting a nomination this year. Besides, nobody saw his movie.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 3, 2023 7:13 PM |
There is no need for these award ceremonies and the Oscar’s should be a private affair. Enough already. These shows are corny, paid for, and don’t get ratings. It’s an archaic concept.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | January 3, 2023 7:17 PM |
I love 'em.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | January 3, 2023 8:09 PM |
Speak for yourself, r155. And what do you care, personally, about the ratings/viewership? Watch something else. Read a book. Take a walk.
Hahaha! You'll tune in like the rest of us here!
by Anonymous | reply 157 | January 4, 2023 12:47 PM |
Rosie O'Donnell was weird and wonderful in the otherwise mundane series American Gigolo. Rosie has done good supporting work in a couple series.

Are we sure Viola got Michelle so wrong, now that we've seen Michelle "I couldn't stand him for 10 years" Obama's real face?
by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 4, 2023 1:24 PM |
Michelle Obama is single handedly ruining her brand with this recent bullshit. But that's another conversation. Viola was terrible as Michelle. She looked like Eddie Murphy in drag. Viola is a character actress. She needs to accept it.

I absolutely will not and neither will the majority of the public.

[quote]And what do you care, personally, about the ratings/viewership?
It further proves their irrelevancy, stupid cow.

[quote]They wanted Lupita, who was cast and then she dropped out.
Dropped out my ass. Pretty, but where's the gravitas? She just, well, got replaced. Almost like Beanie vs. Lea.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | January 4, 2023 11:03 PM |
No awards are important. Just popularity contests, money, and politics. I know they were always like that but now it’s so blatant.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | January 5, 2023 12:06 AM |
R162, That's not "personally," now is it, Dopey who can't bring himself to use DL form?
by Anonymous | reply 165 | January 5, 2023 12:08 AM |
R161/r162, NS, Sherlock, that "the majority of the public" won't watch, as that would be a phenomenal 165 million+.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | January 5, 2023 12:14 AM |
I'll watch just to see what they're wearing.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | January 5, 2023 1:33 AM |
Has anyone seen “The Menu ?”
by Anonymous | reply 168 | January 5, 2023 2:36 AM |
Yes, R168. Loved it. Hong Chau and Janet McTeer give my favorite performances.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | January 5, 2023 2:51 PM |
See you all after the show!
First, though, is the Red Carpet on E! Channel at 6:00 p.m.! Will anyone rival Timmy in avant-garde?!
Then the Awards on NBC at 8:00 p.m.
Colin is a shoo-in for Best Actor: Comedy or Musical.
Meanwhile, the only actor in serious contention who actually sang in a movie with music by the subject (and others) throughout, is not in that category, but is in Best Actor: Drama with Brandon Fraser.
Will the GG give the Award to BF, in an apologetic gesture even if he's not in attendance? Or will he get the Award as an "FU for not attending, you hypocrite!" gesture?
Or will the newbie Austin receive this major award, setting up a mano a mano with Colin for the Oscar?
by Anonymous | reply 170 | January 10, 2023 9:33 PM |
Yeah, Baybee!
Austin Butler---Best Actor: Drama.
Colin Farrell---Best Actor: Musical or Comedy.
Both men gave wonderful, heartfelt acceptance speeches.
Let the Oscar games begin!
by Anonymous | reply 171 | January 11, 2023 2:48 AM |
EZ prediction: Farrell will win, and Fraser and Butler are guaranteed nominations
by Anonymous | reply 172 | January 11, 2023 6:24 PM |
Critics Choice this Sunday; SAG Awards; BAFTA; AA.
Possible Colin sweep. I hope Austin wins some! But the entire movie "Elvis," its pacing between artistically frenetic and normal; its director's not getting much acclaim for it; its, let's face it, biopic subject---all mitigate against Austin's chances.
Austin is quite as much a charming and cheeky monkey as is Colin, but the latter has already the rep of being a great serious dramatic actor. Austin, not so much!
by Anonymous | reply 173 | January 11, 2023 6:34 PM |
Colin has swept nearly all the critics' awards including the NYFCC, National Board of Review and National Society of Film Critics
by Anonymous | reply 174 | January 11, 2023 6:53 PM |
What was the Golden Globes big crime that all these writers keep talking about? Lack of diversity among the foreign press? The foreign press is made up of writers, an industry that has never been diverse and is made up of people hailing from countries that are white as a majority. How is this a crime?
by Anonymous | reply 175 | January 11, 2023 7:35 PM |
r175 it's ridiculous that there was even a "controversy," but we live in weird times right now.
