Rita looked at Natalie Wood, who was also some sort of ethnic, and seethed about how differently they were treated by Hollywood. Rita could sing, dance and act. Natalie could just stand and smile. Rita's bitterness has never abated.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 11, 2022 1:34 PM |
Not everyone is a leading performer. She's, at best, a character actress. You could say the same for anyone from Agnes Moorehead to Margo Martindale. It has nothing to do with her being Hispanic.

I think she did play a few characters who weren't Latino. But her appearance is ethnic-looking, and the world knows she's Hispanic, so it's hard to see her as anything else but that. If she had been born with Cameron Diaz's features, she might've had better luck in getting cast in non-latino roles.

And, not to pile on from my position of privilege (which I acknowledge), the entire story should include the fact that she may not have gotten the part in OZ if she wasn't Hispanic. I know nothing for a fact, but I suspect that on his productions Tom Fontana does nothing without purpose.
She was also very good playing Bobby Goren's schizophrenic mother in Law & Order Criminal Intent. I don't think her ethnicity mattered either way in casting that part, but she apparently feels she had to wait a long time for color blind roles. Not sure anyone can argue that it wasn't the case.
But the EGOT is the primary reason that she might not want to piss on her career.

It’s all part and parcel of our social media culture. If people aren’t paying attention to you, you’re not important. And you’re judged more entitled to attention if you’ve been discriminated against or victimized.
That puts us where we are: an EGOT claiming people didn’t pay enough attention to her.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 11, 2022 4:04 PM |
Her lack of dignity doesn't age well. It's a shitty business rife with misogyny and racism. So is much of the rest of the culture. Her longevity in the business and the awards and accolades should be seen by her as a victory. I've seen her work in film and television and have enjoyed it. But she never, in my opinion, exuded the indefinable magic that is defined as "stardom".
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 11, 2022 4:13 PM |
I guess I don't understand why some of you have the "ungrateful minority" position as your default, especially when, I'm assuming, everyone on here is gay. I'm not quite sure why some of you want to put your heads in the sand about past inequities.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 11, 2022 4:18 PM |
This isn't going to be well-received, but whenever I hear Latino/a and Asian actors/actresses complain about lack of representation and opportunity in the industry in the 50's, 60s, 70s, and even 80's, I want to remind them of just the US demographics back then.
The latino population in the US in 1950 was a little over 1.5% (2.3 million out of 151 million). The asian population was much muc smaller than that (320,000 out of 151 million).
Part of the reason for that were racist immigration policies - that's just a fact. However, the US has become much more diverse since overturning those policies in the late 60's and you're seeing the faces of entertainment reflect that in the last 20-30 years.
Hollywood is a business - it's not a government funded equal opportunity program. People are investing huge sums of money and they want a return via viewership and box office receipts.
Any entertainers other than the primary US demo (straight, white) will have it harder. Jesus - how many gay or lesbian actors have actually really broken through and are pigeon-holed or stereotyped if they do come out?
But the historical lack of Latino and Asian representation isn't some big racist plan - there truly wasn't a significant percentage of US population in those two groups. I just do not see it on the same parallel as the black struggle at all because it isn't. Now, keeping blacks of out film and TV - that was absolutely racist. The lack of good roles and behind the camera opportunities for women - that's sexist.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 11, 2022 4:18 PM |
I say this with love in my heart, but Jesus Christ I’m sick of this entitled old bag. When I think of all the broke, exploited, failed entertainers who would have treasured the opportunities that came to her. She sounds like a nightmare of ego and self-worship. Solipsists like this old crone can fuck all the way off.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 11, 2022 4:22 PM |
And let me add - she wouldn't have the career she had either if she wasn't so beautiful. You wanna talk about privilege - then let's talk about all aspects of privilege.
But funny - the really beautiful and good-looking people never want to acknowledge that. It's just 'their talent'. But Hollywood knows that audiences want to see attractive people, so they win jobs over less attractive actors.
It's a tough business - she should be happy for her success and having a career that lasted so long. Most actors/actresses have about 5 to maybe 10 good years and then they're finished.

Rita is Puerto Rican, she was born there. Her maternal grandfather was from Spain.
Her real name is Rosa Dolores Alverío Marcano. Never heard she was Italian. People used to think John Leguizamo was Italian, because "his last name sounds Italian."
From Wiki: "Moreno was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, to Rosa María (née Marcano), a seamstress, and Francisco José "Paco" Alverío, a farmer.
She was nicknamed "Rosita". Moreno, whose mother was 17 at the time of her birth, was raised in nearby Juncos. Her maternal grandparents were Justino Marcano (b. Puerto Rico) and Trinidad from Spain.
Moreno's mother moved to New York City in 1936, taking her daughter, but not her son, Moreno's younger brother, Francisco, whom Moreno would not see again until 2021.
Moreno adopted the surname of her first stepfather, Edward Moreno, Rosa Maria's second husband. She spent her teenage years living in the villages of Valley Stream on Long Island, part of the town of Hempstead bordering New York City.”

As Spielberg has proven, the only reason people went to see WWS is Natalie. That Moreno ugly cunt was OK, she was dubbed in it like everybody else, and she managed to get an oscar, after which she became so unhinged that she wasn't hired for almost a decade. That's how toxic she is. Her claims about her steamy, oversexual escapades being Brando's great love are laughable, we all know THAT was Wally Cox. She was ugly then, is ugly now, inside ad out, and she should be grateful her ethnicity gave her a pass in the golden age of Hollywwod, where she probably was the ugliest contract player by a mile. Now if she could, in her dotage say something like " Natalie could wipe my entire career from the map with one smile of hers, just standing there, and I'm happy I'm part of that legend" she would look 10 times better.

How many white girls have gone to Hollywood to have their dreams crushed, but didn’t make their failure about race? Most the time you’re ugly, untalented, or sucked the wrong cock. The problem with current climate is that minorities are starting to believe that the normal failures of life always have to do with race, they do not. Rita is the top .01% of Hollywood and she still thinks she FAILED and race had to with it. John Leguizamo thinks he’d be Tom Cruise if he weren’t Latino. It’s like a white guy moving to or being second generation in France or Nigeria and getting pissed when he’s not the top draw at the French & Nigerian cinemas. Truly insane, but only in America do you have the freedom to be that insane. AMERICA, where you’re free to let your ego grow as large as possible.

It seems she is most bitter about her career when she was under contract and assigned parts. If she declined, Rita would have been put on suspension meaning she couldn't work until that film was completed. Actors do work in jobs just for the money which they need to live on. But playing a native girl is better than waiting tables.

Rita Moreno is a fully white-looking Hispanic. She derives about 90% of the White privilege any average white person receives. She has also dined out on her "heritage" in a way no Irish, Polish, or Italian actress ever could and she remains a total expert at bringing all the attention to herself.
It's not like she's Pearl Bailey, or Nancy Kwan for Christ's sake.
Judy deserved that Oscar for "Judgment at Nuremberg" anyway, so she should button it and be grateful!

It was Rita’s enormous ego that enabled her to survive in Hollywood. Sure, her ethnicity limited the roles she could get back then, but she wasn’t a versatile actress. Her talent was in singing and dancing, not emoting. She was more suited playing supporting characters.
She was not a rare beauty. She was pretty. Even if she were white, she didn’t have the “it” factor needed to be a leading lady, who could sell a film on the strength of her personal charm.
She seemed to think otherwise. In her autobiography, which showcased her middling skill as a writer, she described giving her teenaged self a makeover and new hairstyle in imitation of Elizabeth Taylor. This was done to attract the studio heads, to get her foot in the Hollywood door.
According to her, the bigwigs took one look at this transformed Rita and declared her the Latina Elizabeth Taylor, a future star. Yeah, right. She was not in the same league in looks. She didn’t have a star’s compelling personality. Still, she had a long career and should be grateful for it.

R114, no. Maybe a few queens did, but an entire generation of str8s went to se that picture and they don't care about that. They went, because it was the thing to do, the film to see, because it was exciting to see a musical with gangs, murder, blood, in NYC, and because they loved Natalie since REBEL. Nobody went to se WWS for Rita Moreno, and very few people knew her name after watching the movie, whereas Natalie Wood became a household name, everywhere in the world. They didn't like the movie btw, they liked PARTS of it = the incredible panoramic opening, the number on the roof, Natalie's beauty, the poignant ending, the modern Romeo and Juliet references. Rita should be grateful she's hispanic and was cast in the movie. Nobody cares about her, she'll be a footnote in the history of cinema. She's a one trick pony, and she wasn't even that good as Anita, the cunt.

SHE said. Exactly. LB never said any such BS, She wouldn't resemble Taylor in a foggy night, and I don't even like Taylor. and SHE said Brando was all over her for years, adn SHE said Natalie couldn't hold a candle to her. SHE is so bitter and full of shit.

[quote]I’m curious as to why she stayed in a 46-year marriage if she was unhappy.
Because she fucked anyone and everyone - those who could help her and those who co-starred with her - while her dentist hubby kept a blind eye or didn't care. Why would you ditch a sugar daddy who paid the bills when times were hard and let you do exactly what you wanted?
In the early 70s, I worked with her on the Broadway production of THE RITZ. Starting during rehearsals, she had an affair with Stephen Collins. He was an innocent back then, but very married. Look at him now. When the dentist/hubby showed up for the opening night, he had to wait in the background at the cast party until she had finished making the rounds. Nobody knew who he was, and she certainly made no effort to introduce him. Her playwright/friend Terrence McNally finally introduced the poor schlub to the guests.

I never cease to be amazed at actors' stupidity and self-centeredness. Even at the height of the meetoo shit, which coincided with her small resurgence and WSS 2.0 flop, when she had a moment, and could have presented herself in a better light finally, she didn't understand that trashing Natalie wasn't doing anything for her. Pathetic.

You know there's a real problem with the lack of representation when it takes Sandra Bullock to get involved in making The George Lopez show or nothing is happening.
The reason this show is packed with Latino American diversity is actually in response to the lack of it on television at the time. In the early 2000s, Sandra Bullock noticed a lack of representation for Latinos and wanted to create a television show to fix this. She saw Lopez perform standup and approached him with a pitch for what would later become the show, “George Lopez.”
However, networks were not immediately receptive to the idea of a Latino version of “The Cosby Show.” Bullock pitched the show to all of the major networks but, according to her, ”they didn’t know what to do with it.” Thanks to Bruce Helford, “The Drew Carey Show” creator and “Roseanne” writer, the show ended up airing on ABC with Helford becoming a co-creator and an executive producer.
The “George Lopez” show first premiered in April 2002 and lasted for six seasons. A few days after the last season aired in May 2007, the show was canceled by ABC after one executive told Lopez that the network would lose money should the show be renewed. Lopez believed part of the reason for the show’s cancellation was the fact that it was produced by Warner Bros. Television and not ABC Studios.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lopez mentioned that despite the show having changed time slots multiple times, it still had better ratings than newer shows like “Notes from the Underbelly” and “The Knights of Prosperity.” He also dismissed their decision to pick up “Cavemen,” the infamous sitcom based on the Geico cavemen commercials, and not his show: “So a Chicano can’t be on TV, but a caveman can?”

Movies aren't a demographic study. Perhaps latino actors suck, and they don't deserve awards when they land an acting job
