They were everywhere at Christmastime when I was a kid. The Mandarin oranges in the stores these days aren't nearly as sweet and juicy.
I agree, it’s hard to find a good mandarin orange in the supermarket. I had a great mandarin orange tree in the Bay AreaSF, but alas I moved away. It was just so piquant!

Canned mandarin oranges are actually pretty good. Refrigerate first. They’re already peeled, of course. Somehow, there’s no tough membrane on the sections. It’s like eating supremes.
