I’m listening to some old school faves today. Cheryl Lynn is a great singer who had several r&b hits between 1978-1989. She got her start by appearing on The Gong Show in 1976! She then went on to appear as The Wicked Witch of The West in a national tour of The Wiz before landing a record deal with Columbia Records. Her first hit was “Got To Be Real”. Her 1983 #1 r&b hit Encore” is my fave.
She had another hit???

I always loved her. My favorite was "Star Love."
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 6, 2022 2:45 PM |
No one told her disco was over by 1981 and I’m so glad! I was still holding on to that sweet, sweet sound and couldn’t get enough of this song when it came out.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 6, 2022 3:02 PM |
I was 9 when this song came out and I was a huge fan. But I prefer the original version that was released, not the one that has been played for the past 25 or so years with the "zoo-hoos" at the end.

Her duet with Luther Vandross, "If This World Were Mine', is one of my favorite vocal duets of all time. They sang it live on "Soul Train." Fantastic performance.

My brother would get furious with me if I sang Cheryl Lynn songs. He’d punch me in my arm and attempt to body slam me. Sometimes I’d punch him in his face and we’d wrestle until my mother broke it up. He’d call me charming names like “Girl Lynn” or “Hey, faggot!”. Years later he told me that they only played her music in gay discos…now he’s a semi-homeless addict and I just downloaded my favorite Cheryl Lynn songs to my Apple Music playlist on my HP Envy desktop and iPhone, that I bought with money earned from my job as an executive secretary. In my house purchased with my VA home loan. He only uses the VA for rehab and job programs for the indigent ex-servicemen with other than honorable discharges.
See what happens when you listen to Miss Lynn. Thank you, gurl…

R8, I love this song.
The last time I saw her perform was at Sinbad’s Aruba concert. She was headlining with Jeffrey Osborne and DL fave (?) Stephanie Mills. She had put on weight and was a bit out of breath, but still sounded good.

Her song Fidelity produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis was such a jam even if it did sound like Encore.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 6, 2022 5:56 PM |
1983 was my peak club-going period. Didn't miss a single weekend out at the gay clubs.
I don't every recall hearing this "Encore" song that OP posted. It certainly wasn't a standard in any of the clubs I was going to.
Or possibly I did hear it once or twice. and forgot about it. It's a very forgettable song. Doesn't have any kind of hook like Got to be Real or Star Love.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 6, 2022 6:00 PM |
r12 Encore went to the #1 position on the Billboard Hot R&B charts peaking in early 1984. I am 49 yrs old and have known of the song since it came out. I used to listen to r&b radio a lot as a kid.
Sorry you do not enjoy the song. 😣 It is a totally different sound (more Urban) than her disco output. Encore is a Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis production.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 6, 2022 7:23 PM |
r13 I realize "Encore" went to #1 on the charts. Somebody must have been playing it for it to go to the top.
If just wasn't playing in the gay clubs I was going to in North Carolina in 1983. At least not on any king of regular rotation cause I spent many hours on the dance floor in those days and it doesn't sound at all familiar.

Cheryl’s still keeping it real with the disco funk. A friend once told me, in reference to this album cover, that she looked like a grape. He was a bitch.

I can never remember how "Star Love" goes. I like "Encore." It went to #6 on the Dance charts so it certainly received play. She and Luther sound lovely on "If This World Were Mine" but it's not much of a song.

In a (Red Bull?) Interview online, Jam & Lewis said that Encore was like t heir favorite song. That Terry usually doesn't like synth bass or something, but that even he can't resist this jam!
The drum machine programming alone on this is genius, especially during the break where I've heard Jimmy plaid it live with his fingers on the drum machine

[quote]But I prefer the original version that was released, not the one that has been played for the past 25 or so years with the "zoo-hoos" at the end.
The full version has both an extended break down to bass and piano, and the later the zoo hoos come in. They were always there, even if top 40 radio cuts them off usually.
David Foster co-wrote this with Cheryl and I think (not sure) I read that she somehow got ripped off ;( on the royalties.

I didn't know this song but it does seem to use the same EP keyboard pattern and similar bass as Encore, even the drum program is a bit similar.
Encore has more layers of Synths happening though. And the vocals are insane, especially the background vocal arrangement on Encore.

R52: I think half as much Cheryl Lynn would have been enough for this remarkable song. Her voice is extraordinary, and she really completes the mood of the song. But…she goes on and on and on, repeating the same phrase so many times throughout the song that it becomes overwhelming and irritating.

Her 1987 single "New Dress" wasn't a hit only peaking at #34 on the R&B charts but it was sooo good. So funky. Bernadette Cooper (of Klymaxx fame) wrote/produced it. It's heavy on late-80s production but I love late-80s production.

She managed to stay relevant in that big shift that happened when disco "died" - but a lot of acts just shifted on to a slightly more pop/R&B sound and survived the rampage.
She was one of a number of artists I remember from the early 80s - Evelyn King, SOS Band come immediately to mind - that were able to escape a disco label. In fact, almost everyone was able to make a shift.....except for the Bee Gees and Donna Summer, the kings and queen of disco.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 12, 2023 7:21 PM |
Donna Summer was still able to get hit songs in the post-disco landscape, until the "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" shit killed her career.

Star love was the song that was actually used in the dance scene in prom night. The producers figured out they couldn’t afford to use the real songs they shot the movie with so they hired local musicians to make similar new songs that were put in post production.
