I have already voted. I will be so humiliated (again) if the people of my state are stupid enough to vote for a man with the IQ of a head of lettuce. But then I have to remember MTG. Sigh. I hate the South.

Warnock has the edge going into tonight -- he is leading in almost all of the polling by 1-4 points, depending on the pollster. Warnock is leading among women, younger voters, independents & black voters.
However, given how close elections have been in Georgia in the past few years, the Warnock campaign can't take anything for granted.

The fact that Walker is even within 40 percentage points of being elected to the United States Senate is genuinely amazing to me.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 6, 2022 11:15 PM |
Hershel Walker is an embarrassment, I shudder to imagine him as a US Senator.
Thankfully we won't have to live through that, I have no doubt Warnock has this.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 6, 2022 11:15 PM |
Warnock overperforming last month's numbers in some counties so far. But early days yet.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 6, 2022 11:21 PM |
We also need to have a conversation about Georgia's absurd election laws. A ton of wasted money doing these run off elections. It's so stupid.
You could do ranked choice voting like Alaska does instead. They do basically the same principle without forcing everybody to suffer through a second election.

LIVE: Watch Steve Kornacki as he crunches Georgia Senate runoff voting data in real time.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 6, 2022 11:31 PM |
Maine uses rank choice voting too.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden has officially retained his seat representing Maine's 2nd District in Congress.
Golden was declared the winner of the 2nd District race with 53% of the vote on Wednesday after a ranked-choice runoff held in Augusta.
He had a nearly 12,000-vote lead over former Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin after the first tally of ballots cast on Election Day. But he failed to garner more than 50% of the vote, so Maine’s law required the race to go to a ranked-choice runoff.
And, after entering more than 315,000 ballots into the secure computer system, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and her staff hit the button to retabulate the race.
In the end, 12,062 supporters of independent Tiffany Bond ranked Golden second on their ballots. That gave the Democrat more than enough votes to push him above the 50% threshold needed to secure a third term in Congress.
This is the second time in four years that Golden beat Poliquin in a ranked-choice runoff. Golden also beat Poliquin in 2018 with the help of Bond supporters who listed the Democrat second on their ballots.

I am guessing he was not the brightest bulb beforehand, but the concussions have not helped.
It is just depressing this is not a blow-out. The man has a history of being violet with his girlfriends and spouses - has lied about his academic career - about being a cop - has been caught paying for abortions - can barely get out a coherent sentence - debated about being a vampire versus a werewolf - clearly had handlers at every press appearance, and anywhere outside the Atlanta metro is voting for him heavily.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 7, 2022 12:01 AM |
R39, the vote we are seeing now is predominantly early voting, which favors Democrats. Walker will narrow the lead as more of the Election Day vote comes in.

Walker is doing better in the rural counties than he did in November, but Warnock is doing betting in the metro counties than he did in November. Hopefully Warnock's improvements will outnumber Walkers.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 7, 2022 12:07 AM |
How have you not learned by now that it is not about what the current vote count says, it's about where that vote comes from and where votes are left r39.
Votes happen in predictable patterns, we know some counties will be blue and some red, we know there is partisan skew in person versus early voting. Got to do a little breakdown in what you are looking at.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 7, 2022 12:07 AM |
R41, let us know when Kornacki’s at the big board with his khakis OFF.

Fetterman got out into the rural areas. Areas he should’ve had no chance in, not just in this race, but his prior races. Warnock traveled the state as well. Maybe if more candidates didn’t take votes/no-votes for granted seem they could do better than expected.

by Anonymous | reply 82 | December 7, 2022 12:45 AM |
Look. Nothing wrong with going into rural areas to close the gap. Warnock did that too. But where our strength is, is with the younger voters and we need to work like hell to get them oput. When they show up we win. Look. Gun Safety, the Environment and student loan debt are hot issues for them, but so is healthcare. Minimum wage, employment oppportunities, etc.

The county in Georgia is one of the red-to-purple ones, we have a university. I am always shocked and offended. I voted for Warnock. I am watching MSNBC and experiencing some high levels of stress. If people had sense it would not be this close.

Doesn’t matter how they vote. Fulton County will produce the votes for Warnock to win. It may be Friday or Saturday before they find them in a van by the river but, rest assured, they will produce the votes…with “produce”, being the operative word.

Very happy, but it's still disturbing that it was that close. A different candidate could probably beat Warnock in some years. If Repugs chose a candidate who could actually read and wasn't such a dimwit, wasn't tied to Trump, and appeared slightly less right wing - Black or otherwise - and gained back some of, for example, north Fulton County voters, would they also lose voters who would vote for someone like Walker.

It's interesting how it's lost on the so-called "Christian Nationalists" that people of every race, religion (or none at all), sexuality, etc, were rooting for or voted for a Christian, southern baptist preacher to win. A man whose Christian faith is at his very core was cheered on by people who are seen as a threat to the so-called "Christian conservatives."
Could we finally put an end to the farce of those assholes being anything but heathens? They're supporters of actual, sinning filth like Trump, Walker, MTG,Boebert, Cawthorn, etc, etc etc. They themselves are filth.

I was lying in bed last night and I saw the local news reporting that the race was razor thin, but they didn't say by how much. I began to panic. By midnight they were saying Warnock was ahead by about 30k votes with 85% of the votes counted. I began to feel a little less worried, but I thought "the cretin Walker could still win". I finally fell asleep and woke up at 5:40am, turned on the local news and saw that Rev. Warnock had won by about 90k votes. I am an atheist from the word go, but I admit I laid there in my bed and said "thank you Jesus".
They then went to the Warnock and Walker campaign parties and Rev. Warnock did what he does best. Walker was bleating about how it wasn't over and he was going to still do everything he could to help Georgians. I thought "you piece of shyte, you'll flee back to Texas and never give Georgians another thought".
I hope that fat cunt Lindsay Graham went to bed last night squalling like the fat baby he is. But I can just hear all the racist diatribes all of Walker's republican "friends" in Congress right now. They're done with him like a sack of rotten potatoes.

The best is knowing the likes of Ted and Linz will have far, far less power with just one extra D vote.
AZ now has a complete statewide D slate. Biden won it two years ago.
GA has two D Senators, and Biden won in two years ago.
Democrats flipped one Senate seat, didn’t lost any seats (first for any president in the first midterm since the Greatest FDR).
Democrats flipped 3 Govs.
Democrats flipped numerous state legs, flipped seats in many other seats. Not so much for Republicans.
Democrats flipped a Secretary of State and Attorney General while not losing any.
They only lost a very small number of House seats (while flipping 6).
All in a midterm year in the first year as the party in power. This is the best midterm result in 100 years except for 1934.
Feel very good about this despite the closeness of some races.

Well, very stupid, clearly.

A large percentage of Walker voters knew exactly what kind of scum he is, but they don't care. That's exactly the type they want in Congress. Someone not afraid to lie and cheat to get them what they want.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | December 7, 2022 12:24 PM |
R83, I don’t disagree. We need them too. But we also need voters who understand how their vote impacts the direction of government and who will vote regardless of the issues or the personality (or values) of the candidate, but rather to keep (or get) the government on a course that they prefer (see the GOP base). If more liberal-minded folks understood where voting for Trump (or any Republican) would take the courts, Roe v Wade would still stand.
If young voters are only going to vote on an issue that matters personally to them, they’ll never be a reliable voting base. Which is why it’s important to appeal to the entire voting population, not just where you think you’ll get votes. It’s like what happening with the GOP now: they think appealing only to Trump voters will get their candidates in, but it’s shown to be not enough. And it won’t be enough.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | December 7, 2022 12:26 PM |
I think it was on this thread that someone said the reason people will vote for a cretin like Walker is that it’s similar to rooting for a home team. They know he’s a cretin but they want him to win. Dems have to keep working on GOTV and also changing the hearts and minds of people to root for the other team.

White Georgians, the so-called moderate Republicans, don't like outsiders coming in to tell them how to vote. So Lindsey Graham coming in for walker didn't help one bit. In Kemps Georgia, he is sitting on a $6 Billion surplus he did not create, while we have hosp[pitals closing all over Georgia. He is against raising the minimum wage above $7.50. We have a massive homeless problem with a shortage of no affordable housing. We have no rental cap so landlords can raise the rent as much and as often as they want. He talks about our thriving economy but teachers and first responders are leaving their professions because of wage stagnation, and he talks about inflation as if the cost of housing and wage stagnation play no part. He brags about how he kept Georgia open during COVID, but he fails to recognize the actual financial burdens this placed on the healthcare system. He refuses to participate in Medicaid so we have nearly a million uninsured people. Our infrastructure is shit. I'm not just talking about roads and bridges. I'm talking clean water, WiFi, etc. Public Education is shit in Georgia. We needed Stacey Abrams. We have to f ind a way to break the grip of the assholes in the rural northern suburbs. I think Warnock can help us do that.

R333 I've got another take at this... Fetterman and Warnock were not the images of "Experienced Politician".... even though Warnock was incumbent. I think Dems can win with politicians who play like "real people, just like you"... which might look different from district to district, state to state. I don't think "experienced politician" is the winning image.
by Anonymous | reply 336 | December 7, 2022 3:04 PM |
We dodged a bullet with Fetterman. TBH
He is not who he appears to be.
He is a Harvard graduate from a wealthy family and his parents basically supported him while he "found himself" and then supported him while he played at being a small town mayor, a job with a salary that was more like a thank you than a living wage.
Fortunately Oz was not smart enough to capitalize on that.
Or maybe it doesn't matter and perception is everything. I had to triple check that after I read it-- I was convinced he was a regulation blue collar rural Pennsylvanian
by Anonymous | reply 338 | December 7, 2022 3:25 PM |
Fetterman did pick up a masters degree from Harvard r338 but that is very different than going there for undergrad or like law school in terms of how hard to get in. His undergrad was at Albright and his MBA from UConn. Perfectly fine but not super elite or prestigious.
But yes, his father was well off, he comes from a comfortable background.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | December 7, 2022 3:33 PM |
Almost, R338, but "Harvard graduate" makes him sound like Ben Sasse. He went to a liberal arts college an hour from his hometown and then UConn for an MBA. He later got a master's in public policy from the Kennedy School at Harvard in his late 20s. "Fetterman had a self-described privileged upbringing" (Wikipedia)—but not exactly elite.

by Anonymous | reply 341 | December 7, 2022 3:35 PM |
Who in the hell cares if Fetterman is wealthy? His POLITICS shows he understands that he was given advantages not afforded to others and his ideology is one that believes in extending opportunity to those who never got his advantages in life --that's what it is to be a Democrat as opposed to absolute garbage like a Meghan McCain who never earned a fucking thing in her life and is a typical, selfish Republican.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | December 7, 2022 3:36 PM |
Yes we were both making the same point at the same time lol r341.
It's a real distinction though, the little secret is a lot of masters programs at "elite" schools are money making machines. It's not that hard to get in compared to some of their other programs.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | December 7, 2022 3:40 PM |
Anything is better than Oz. Fetterman will probably be a disaster though. Two horrible candidates with one edging out the other.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | December 7, 2022 3:44 PM |
Exactly, R343. I work in a university and the generation of master's programs basically consumes administrators. Even better money-making machines are "executive master's" programs, wherein local businesses pay the university to send their employees there to get some extra training and a piece of paper.
That said, the Kennedy School has a good reputation and no doubt Fetterman learned a lot there.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | December 7, 2022 3:46 PM |

Funny how you all are trying to match "real biography" with "presented" biography. Trump was "a successful businessman".... not. JD Vance was a hillbilly in his genes (ivy league education and support and tech billionaire support). Etc.
Fetterman with his hoodies and shorts and biker-chick wife absolutely sold authentically as "a regular guy." I mean his early job, after the ivy league MA, was as GED TEACHER, jesus.
You know another guy who is a career politician who still sells with many folks as "a guy you'd like to have a beer with"? the president. This president, not the insurrectionist.

The fact is, Warnock projects humility. In a good way. He is definitely of the belief that holding a public office is a stewardship. He wasn't running for Prom King. He was running as a job interview. Which is really what it's about. And I think his "tactic" of engaging with people and saying "we're all in this together, I am going to walk with you..." it really works. When he says he will work for all Georgians he really means it. And yes, he is very similar to Biden and Obama in this regard. Also similar to Jimmy Carter. And even the Clintons.

Kelly Loeffler was the epitome of a fabulously rich person who had lost the ability to see reality. Brian Kemp was stupid enough to think she would make a good Senator and she bought into that idea. She was not a person who was interested in doing the work. She thought "I am rich beyond belief and anything I say people will listen to. And I have little doubt her husband (the one with the real money in that family) thought his wife being a US Senator would be good for business.
I seriously doubt she'd ever be interested in running for national office again. She's seen that it's hard work to win. Plus she was humiliated nationally day after day about everything from her looks, her hoity toityness, to her abilities as a Senator.

Ossoff defeated an incumbent white guy (Purdue) which was shocking. I do think Kemp will run in ‘26 for Senate, but since Ossoff defeated an incumbent before, and who knows what Kemp’s popularity will be by then, don’t count Ossoff out.
Plus, Ossoff is gorgeous, sexy, smart and I think he should be president one day.

R400, Brian Kemp was not concerned with whether she'd be good. Brian Kemp was mostly concerned with ingratiating himself to his Billionaire buddy. Doug Collins the lunatic Congressman who loved Trump, was snubbed. Trump hated Kemp for that. Trump told Kemp to appoint Collins. Kemp laughed in his face. Kemp was always all in for the Loefflers.

Which is considered the higher political office—Governor or Senator?
Isn’t it more likely that Kemp would run for President, not Senator?
by Anonymous | reply 407 | December 9, 2022 8:07 PM |
Kemp may decide to go for Senate. In honesty, Being a Governor is much better than being a Senator. However one is a state office the other federal. In the Senate he is one of 100 people. But in GA he is the Chief executive.
by Anonymous | reply 408 | December 9, 2022 8:17 PM |
Senator is technically higher in the political hierarchy and prestige, but people who have been governors often don’t want to be a senator because they are used to be an executive who has unilateral power. A Senator has diluted power as one of 100

Ossoff is popular and very appealing. Who knows what Kemp’s next move is, but that fug weird looking bitch ain’t gonna be president. Ever. Also, GA will be much more Blue by ‘26. I don’t think Abrams had the spark this time like last. She turns off a lot of suburban white votes were Ossoff wouldn’t.
GA really just is not having the maga at all. Like damn. AZ isn’t either, but shocking the most insane one came the closest.
We thankfully got two great Democrats for full Senate terms- Kelly and Warnock. Kelly votes very left, but as someone said, speaks moderate. They all need lessons in that. Voters like liberal policy, just not the typical liberal talk about that policy. Tester, Kelly, Fetterman prove this.
We really need our good MT Ds to make moves. Bullock is so appealing and was a very popular Gov. He entered the presidential contest too late. Whatever happened to the very popular Gov Schweitzer? He was a badass D Gov of MT. He used to veto R legislation by taking it out and branding a huge veto over the bills like you do cattle.

Kemp may run for President in 2024. He’s one of the few Republicans who stood up to Trump and won. He’s the popular Governor of what is now a swing state with a lot of electors. And he’ll appeal to Republicans who find DeSantis too ethnic, too fat, too crass and/or too white nationalist adjacent.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | December 10, 2022 12:51 AM |
R412 I don’t think he has much appeal past GA. He is not particularly charismatic. I don’t see him inspiring maga to vote for him to win a primary much less a presidential election. I don’t see Dan and Dee Plorable schlepping out and voting Kemp. 😀

US senator serves in the US Congress. This is federal.
A governor is the executive branch within the state, state level.
There is no ranking or hierarchy between the two elected offices. They are in different systems (federal v state) and functions (legislative v executive).
by Anonymous | reply 415 | December 10, 2022 12:56 AM |
Senators have more prestige since they are national. Now, if you’re the Gov of a huge state like CA or NY, that is way different than the Gov of SD.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | December 10, 2022 12:59 AM |
I cannot stress this enough- the Republican base is radicalized. There is almost zero way a non-maga R gets the nomination. The base will not accept a Hogan, Kemp, Romney, Cheney or any “normal” R. If by some miracle they slip through and get the nomination, maga slobs will never waste their time voting for “the establishment”. Ds would have a FDR/LBJ landslide on their hands.
The genie is out of the bottle. We’re stuck with these radicalized dirtbags for awhile until they lose enough and often.

R417, Georgia Republicans rejected - by a far margin - the MAGA candidate (Perdue) who challenged Kemp in the primary. I recognize, though, that a statewide incumbent like Kemp has an advantage that may not obtain in an open primary race.

I disagree. I actually think the problem was the way she went after him. She'll be asked questions about something not necessarily related to Kemp and she mentions Kemp in every answer in a rather awkward way. It was actually annoying how she'd crowbar his name into the answer and it just sounded forced. She's not a very good campaigner.

Many of them are going to stay home and nurse their grievances if they can’t have have their powerful orange man of yore and he is no longer the head of the Republican Party.
Hogan’s a moderate, Romney’s a Mormon who already lost a Presidential election and Cheney is viewed as a traitor for working with Democrats. They don’t have a chance even if every Dan and Dee in the country went team normal. Friends who are close in to all this say the betting is that DeSantis winds up being the new Scott Walker.
He is not the least bit charismatic or even dynamic, has zero sense of humor in front of a crowd, and so when he gets out there, his policy statements will excite the Tucker Carlsons and WSJ Editorial Boards, but to ElderLez's point at R425, your average Dan and Dee Plorable will be unimpressed and it will be hard to get them to turn out to actually vote for him.
Do not forget, fellow Sodomites, that many of Trump's voters have only voted in presidential elections twice in their lives-- in 2016 and 2020. Not because they're young, but because they were uninterested. There is also a sizable enough group of them who voted for Obama, thinking he would be the change they needed to restore their worlds.
by Anonymous | reply 429 | December 10, 2022 1:19 PM |
This may be an outrageous statement but I think with the collapse of Trump it will be decades before we see another Republican President. And I love that.
The party is such a splintered mess with so many divisive repugnant personalities, it will take many years (if ever) before it morphs into something cogent and united that will motivate their confused and disappointed constituents to vote again in large enough numbers.
And the red majority Congress is actually a good thing for Dems, as it will only put on vivid display how stupid and ineffectual the Republican party leaders are.
by Anonymous | reply 430 | December 10, 2022 2:33 PM |
You know, at some point the media and we, the voters need to turn away from the whole Trump "thing" and start looking at all these so called "moderates" what the Republican Party post Trump looks like and what they stand for. And the basic fact is, the Republicans are very bad news. They ARE Neo Fascists. There maybe a difference in their style, and in the language they use,, but the goals remain the same. Do not ever forget it. They're quarreling about style not substance. Don't ever forget it.

Look. The biggest thing we have to fight is a kind of complacency, or maybe better to call it a lack of urgency. All over the world we can look at how masses of people are controlled and oppressed by a handful of vile ruthless corrupt pigs. So we have to do the work. Because hate them as I do, I have to credit the Republicans with their willingness to do the work. They have dedication and they never acknowledge defeat. They know exactly what the end game is. They know which direction they a re going. And all these lunatic, MAGA dummies are the foot soldiers. They are laying the foundation. The Neo Fascist GOP has weaponized stupidity. We can't let up for a minute. We cannot be lulled by the mainstream corporate media into thinking everything is business as usual. The polarization isn't going away. I feel like the thing I will never see in my lifetime, is those old days when there was bi partisan cooperation. It may come back, but not in my lifetime. And IMO given what we are dealing with right now, I'm glad. Because I don't intend to support "cooperating" with Fascists.

It would not surprise me in the last if Herschel fled the state of Georgia for his full time home in Texas right after giving that pathetic concession speech in front of his followers. He's much too arrogant to hang around and be stared at and mocked right to his face
I agree that the GOP has been trying for decades to return the USA to a 50s/60s era lifestyle. An era where people who were not white were kept in their place, a place where their very existence relied on what whites allowed for them. A place where immigrants not of Caucasian European ancestry were allowed in sparingly only for the purposes of serving as domestics and laborers for the white population at slave wages.
The GOP has been trying to turn the USA into a model of NAZI Germany for decades, and they stupidly thought having Trump in the White House was the best chance they had. They've brain washed a large percentage of stupid racist white Americans, just like Hitler's NAZI regime did in the 30s & 40s against Jews, homosexuals, and anyone they deemed not pure Aryan, into thinking that's the only thing that will save 'the American way' they so lovingly remembered or heard about from their elders.
The MAGA version of the Republican Party must be destroyed as rapidly as possible. Thankfully they seem to be self destructing, but we'll still be left with a few crazies in the political world who'll keep up the rabble rousing, and the idiots in the populace who will keep the MAGA attitude until they die. We have to put a big enough scare into people who long for the old days so they'll crawl back in the holes they were in before they got the chance to vote for their savior Trump. Since we can never wipe it from some people's minds, they must be reduced to being afraid of espousing MAGA ideology in public.
We're probably at minimum 2 decades away from washing this MAGA scourge from the mindset of most who still long for it. Death is the only thing that will remove it from the elderly .

by Anonymous | reply 439 | December 11, 2022 10:18 AM |
We can assume Hershel was given a script for his concession speech, but IMO it was closer to what he himself really felt and wanted to say, than a lot of the B.S. politicians usually say.
You know, South Africa used the United States' approach when setting up its Apartheid state. It's interesting to study not just America or Europe's history with the slave trade, but it's impact globally. It seems every society had /has its hierarchy.
But I'm not aware of any where POC were the dominant authority and white males the submissives. Fascinating how they ascended and seized control of their worlds. Since their numbers were few, it's evident that the oppressed aided their oppressors, by participating in building the social structure that permitted their own subjugation. I guess in any environment, any society, it is the smart, the ruthless and the cunning who triumph.

Waiting for the old folks to die is a fool’s errand in politics. As the current old folks die middle aged folks take their place. And all generational groups tend to skew more conservative as they age.
I don’t seek to minimize the existential threat that is Trump and Neo-fascist post Trump ideology and candidates in the Republican Party. But claims of the death of bipartisanship are greatly exaggerated. The first Biden infrastructure bill was bipartisan, funding for Ukraine has been bipartisan, the Chips act was bipartisan. The repeal of DOMA and reform of marijuana research laws that both just passed were bipartisan. Heck as I type Rand Paul and Cory Booker of all odd couples are working together on a bill to de-schedule marijuana. Accelerationists want you to believe that democracies can’t work, but that simply isn’t true.

But to a lesser and lesser degree with each new generation. And that's why the MAGA ideology has be stomped on hard until people get it out of their systems, or realize that even though they think that way they know it's gone. And that will take decades, not just a few years.
I've said this for years, but the American "freedom of speech" system has been a failure from the get-go. It's this freedom of speech that allowed MAGA to thrive. Speech that seeks to provoke the overthrow of the government should be illegal.
