What people don't understand is that not only do you get 1/2 your DNA from each parent (duh) but that you get a sample from each parent effectively and it can be a different distribution from what the parent has. Kamala Harris is whiter-looking than either of her parents. That's statistically unlikely, but it can happen.

Studies suggest people are often more directly influenced by their grandparents' genes in terms of several factors that relate to appearance. Hair, for one.

Combination of dominant and recessive genes. It is all a genetic lottery. My brother's wife is Chinese. Their first kid looked very much Asian, their second was a mirror image of my white bread brother.

Patrick Mahomes has a daughter with similar coloring to Paula Patton’s kid. Obviously Meghan Markle’s kids too. I think it’s fairly common for a 1/4 black child to look totally white, even really fair.

The oddest offspring I’ve seen though is a Jayson Tatum, a BB player on the Celtics. I think he’s fully black, but light skin, and the kid’s mom is biracial, who looks biracial. The kid looks completely white. Genetics is really interesting.

There is no such thing as "fully black, but light skinned." There are almost no African-Americans who are 100% of African ancestry, except for recent African immigrants. Even dark-skinned folk have SOME European ancestry if they are descendants of slaves. It's not visible maybe, but it's there and affects the genes transmitted to children. So a child with one Black grandparent like this kid or Archie Windsor has less than 25% African ancestry in reality.

I'm black, both my Ancestry DNA and 23 &Me have me at well over 50% European. My skin complexion is café au lait or light-skinned and I do not have kinky hair, but I identify as black and always have. Relatives, similar to me, who married white women, all have white appearing children.

Meh, it’s not that weird. I’m moderately hairy, but my dad was pretty much hairless. One brother is like me, our other brother is like our dad. My brothers also have blue eyes like our mom, while mine are brown. I am the only one of the three to have Mom’s curly hair, even though I didn’t get her blue eyes like my brothers did. Fascinating to me.
