Pitt students facing abuse of corpse charges for alleged class incident

Two University of Pittsburgh students have been charged with abuse of a corpse for an alleged incident that took place during a class in November.

Classmates of Amay Gupta and Sonel Jimenez, both 19 years old, reported inappropriate behavior regarding medical cadavers to Pitt police.

The human cadavers were being used in a university anatomy lab class in Victoria Hall on Nov. 4.

During a class about muscle groups, Gupta allegedly inappropriately touched and made inappropriate comments about a male cadaver.

Jimenez allegedly inappropriately touched a female cadaver and made inappropriate comments.

Gupta and Jimenez are scheduled to appear for preliminary hearings in Allegheny County Court in January.

A University of Pittsburgh spokesperson issued the following response:

“The University of Pittsburgh is committed to upholding the dignity of, and respect for, all donors whose selfless acts of giving enhance and enrich education.

As soon as the University became aware of the incident, the appropriate offices, including Pitt Police, the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX, and Compliance, Investigations and Ethics, were notified. It was determined that the alleged acts were criminal in nature, and the suspects have been charged.

Members of the class who witnessed the incidents received information about resources available to them, including counseling services and Title IX programs.

The University is working with the relevant organizations regarding family notifications.”

Well, when you're from Pittsburgh, you have to do SOMETHING.

They had to take a Title IX course for harassing cadavers. What did they do - misgender them?

What did these shithole Indian and Latino do? Their classmates must really despise them to have reported their stupid act to the university.

As if this hasn't happened 1000 times before in anatomy classes

I think there is a difference between what has been done in the past which was commonly accepted practice and what would be considered acceptable behavior today.

This is the real crux of a lot of the "cancel culture" today. Cancelling people for common behaviors from 20 years ago is vastly different from someone engaging in the same now not acceptable behavior today.

Also, it's one thing to make verbal jokes. It's another to be touching the bodies "inappropriately" while making the jokes. I'd argue it would depend on what they both said and did, rather than a blanket statement about it.

r1 You are RIGHT! Pittsburgh is awful! It's expensive, the people are mean and you should never go there. Ever!

R6 clearly missed the point.

WTF?! F&F this racist at R3.

Why tell the families? That would just hurt them.

People donate their bodies to science, so that doctors can learn and expand their knowledge.

Not so that obnoxious and immature children can play with the genitals on their dead body.

It's so distasteful, and even worse, it's just so disrespectful.

I'm glad they got in big trouble for it. Hopefully, this will serve as a lesson to future med students.

The medical field is so terrible these days.

After reading Michael Crichton's book in which he detailed the shenanigans that went on with the cadavers at Harvard med school, including students playing football with the livers, I'm not surprised by anything med students do.
