I think what helps her is her blind self-belief and ability to ignore most criticism of her talents.

She might not be the most talented actress herself but she's very sharp and perceptive, and I'm sure that has gone a long way towards managing to sustain a successful career for so many years.

Lopez isn't a bad actress at all in the right role. She used to get great reviews in the 90s and was very much seen as a serious, real actress in films like Selena, U Turn, Out of Sight, etc. She was nominated for a Golden Globe just two or three years into her film career. I think she definitely could have won a Golden Globe or even an Oscar if she'd stayed on that trajectory and not pursued music and a million other careers.

She also started picking films badly once she started the music career. She really isn't good in romantic comedies at all because she comes across as forced and inauthentic. She is good in gritty roles. I thought her role in Hustlers was perfect for her and I don't think anyone could have played it any better. Constance Wu wasn't really believable as a stripper who'd had a hard life in NYC (too soft, too valley girl seeming), but Lopez was. She has the attitude, the accent, all of it.
