The original Wiz isn’t woke enough for the people running Broadway now. I bet they will make Evilene a TERF.
Since the Wizard is a straight white cis-male, does that mean he's the new villain?

Why can’t they just leave the material alone? What could they possibly add to improve it?

Toto will be an emotional support dog.
Dorothy will be a lesbian, played by Beanie.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 1, 2022 3:51 PM |
The musical will tour first and 'end up on Broadway' in 2024.
Which means, it will get slammed by critics while out on tour, and never make it to Broadway.
Ask the cast of 'Devil Wears Prada' musical, which died a painful death in Chicago this summer.

I'm excited.
I hate the creepy movie but kinda liked the LIVE TV version and the new songs they put in it.
If they can make the story feel more substantial a bit, keep the new songs and give it good arrangements and sets and costumes....it could be great.
People will welcome this.

The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle just opened a production of The Wiz and the show itself needs a book freshening...but the show still has great songs/numbers in it.
The movie had some amazing design elements in it but it just didn't work. Wrong director and wrong casting choices made.
The TV version from a few years ago was actually pretty good.

It’s irksome that you rarely see the name Ken Harper when The Wiz is written about. He was a DJ whose idea for an all-black version of The Wizard of Oz led to The Wiz. His vision made it happen. He was a producer of the stage show and the movie.
He died of an AIDS related illness and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

I guess I'm one of the few that absolutely loves the film version. One of my all time favorites growing up, still to this day. And I always felt that the music and concepts/staging in the film version was far better than stage versions I've seen. Setting it in a dark, twisted version of NYC was really clever, and Quincy's orchestrations and expanding of the songs, especially "The Emerald City Sequence" and "A Brand New Day" were incredible in the film.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the live TV version they did several years ago too, and the updates to the music they did on that one. Rumor was that version was supposed to be reworked for the stage and sent to Broadway by the same production team, but it never happened.

Kenneth G. Harper, who produced 'The Wiz' on Broadway in 1975, died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 48 years old. The cause of death was cancer, said his mother, Mildred Harper.
'The Wiz,' a black musical version of L. Frank Baum's 1900 story 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,' won seven Tony awards in 1975, including the one for best musical. The show ran for more than 1,600 performances and was later turned into a film. In the late 1960's and early 70's, Mr. Harper worked as a disk jockey at radio station WPIX-FM.
He is survived by his parents, Mildred and Alfred Harper, of the Bronx. The funeral will be at 10 A.M. tomorrow at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, at 81st Street.

I don't get the hate for The Wiz.
It was a fun, frothy little adventure.

I saw the Wiz as a kid and loved it! My first Bway show and I was hooked.
Sadly the versions I’ve seen as an adult don’t capture any of the joy the characters did during that first production.

Yes, Diana Ross was too old for Dorothy but she still gave a great performance.

Original commercial (doesn’t really show off the show).
