THE WIZ is coming back to Broadway

The original Wiz isn’t woke enough for the people running Broadway now. I bet they will make Evilene a TERF.

Since the Wizard is a straight white cis-male, does that mean he's the new villain?

by Anonymousreply 1December 1, 2022 3:21 PM

Richard Pryor was white?

by Anonymousreply 2December 1, 2022 3:23 PM

This reeks of ableism.

by Anonymousreply 3December 1, 2022 3:24 PM

Will Toto be a rescue dog?

by Anonymousreply 4December 1, 2022 3:27 PM

“With new material”

Why can’t they just leave the material alone? What could they possibly add to improve it?

by Anonymousreply 5December 1, 2022 3:32 PM

Will the cast be 'all-white' with this woke version? Eveline is sure to be a trannie.

by Anonymousreply 6December 1, 2022 3:36 PM

Toto should be a marital aid. With feelings.

by Anonymousreply 7December 1, 2022 3:43 PM

Will the Tin Man wear a gold chain?

by Anonymousreply 8December 1, 2022 3:49 PM

In a world full of ideas and potential wonderful shows, why re-hash this garbage? Are they going to use songs from the film? What could they possibly do with this new production to make it worthwhile?

by Anonymousreply 9December 1, 2022 3:51 PM

Toto will be an emotional support dog.

Dorothy will be a lesbian, played by Beanie.

by Anonymousreply 10December 1, 2022 3:51 PM

The musical will tour first and 'end up on Broadway' in 2024.

Which means, it will get slammed by critics while out on tour, and never make it to Broadway.

Ask the cast of 'Devil Wears Prada' musical, which died a painful death in Chicago this summer.

by Anonymousreply 11December 1, 2022 3:54 PM

Will the Flying Monkeys be Antifa?

by Anonymousreply 12December 1, 2022 3:57 PM

A LOT can happen in a year.

by Anonymousreply 13December 1, 2022 3:58 PM

Is Amber Ruffin a Lebanese?

by Anonymousreply 14December 1, 2022 4:00 PM

Will Miss Ross be cast as GLINDA and have Lena Horne roll over in her grave ?

by Anonymousreply 15December 1, 2022 4:42 PM

OP is the racist CUNT.

by Anonymousreply 16December 1, 2022 4:47 PM

Will critics take a whizz on The Wiz?

by Anonymousreply 17December 1, 2022 4:54 PM

Will Laverne Cox be Dorothy Gale?

by Anonymousreply 18December 1, 2022 5:02 PM

Please let Lavarious Slaughter be involved.

I really liked The Wiz on Broadway, it's that crappy movie version I hated.

by Anonymousreply 20December 1, 2022 5:27 PM

Lavarioush Shlaughter.

by Anonymousreply 21December 1, 2022 5:52 PM

This will end in tears just like the all woman version of '1776'.

by Anonymousreply 22December 1, 2022 8:07 PM

Finally, a revival to be excited about. Schele Williams is really talented. I've worked with her.

by Anonymousreply 23December 1, 2022 8:18 PM

Is Stephanie Mills still playing Dorothy?

by Anonymousreply 24December 2, 2022 4:35 AM

[quote] Eveline is sure to be a trannie.

No, she's not going to be played by one; but Uncle Em will be.

by Anonymousreply 25December 2, 2022 4:37 AM

Billy Porter IS Dorothy Gale!

by Anonymousreply 26December 2, 2022 4:47 AM

I'm excited.

I hate the creepy movie but kinda liked the LIVE TV version and the new songs they put in it.

If they can make the story feel more substantial a bit, keep the new songs and give it good arrangements and sets and costumes....it could be great.

People will welcome this.

by Anonymousreply 27December 2, 2022 4:49 AM

The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle just opened a production of The Wiz and the show itself needs a book freshening...but the show still has great songs/numbers in it.

The movie had some amazing design elements in it but it just didn't work. Wrong director and wrong casting choices made.

The TV version from a few years ago was actually pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 28December 2, 2022 5:01 AM

Glad to hear he's coming back. We need an electronics store other than Best Buy.

Elliot Page IS the Scarecrow!

by Anonymousreply 34December 2, 2022 1:01 PM

Timothee is the Scarecrow…or should be.

by Anonymousreply 35December 2, 2022 2:17 PM

They wrote a musical about watersports?

Is there also a number about poppers?

Slings?

by Anonymousreply 36December 2, 2022 2:26 PM

Beanie as the head of the Lollipop Guild!

by Anonymousreply 37December 2, 2022 3:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 39December 2, 2022 4:13 PM

Billy Porter *IS* Apperdale!

by Anonymousreply 40December 2, 2022 4:15 PM

Raven-Symoné IS Glinda!

by Anonymousreply 41December 2, 2022 5:04 PM

Bringing this back to Broadway? Why not just bring back BAJOUR or a new rewrite of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S but keep the score.

by Anonymousreply 42December 2, 2022 5:07 PM

It’s irksome that you rarely see the name Ken Harper when The Wiz is written about. He was a DJ whose idea for an all-black version of The Wizard of Oz led to The Wiz. His vision made it happen. He was a producer of the stage show and the movie.

He died of an AIDS related illness and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

by Anonymousreply 43December 2, 2022 5:14 PM

Beanie Fieldstein IS Aunt Eller!

by Anonymousreply 44December 4, 2022 2:52 PM

I'm still available to play Dorothy!

by Anonymousreply 50December 9, 2022 11:18 AM

Let me guess. Book will be rewritten for the umteenth time by —fill in the black with anyone

by Anonymousreply 51December 9, 2022 11:39 AM

I guess I'm one of the few that absolutely loves the film version. One of my all time favorites growing up, still to this day. And I always felt that the music and concepts/staging in the film version was far better than stage versions I've seen. Setting it in a dark, twisted version of NYC was really clever, and Quincy's orchestrations and expanding of the songs, especially "The Emerald City Sequence" and "A Brand New Day" were incredible in the film.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the live TV version they did several years ago too, and the updates to the music they did on that one. Rumor was that version was supposed to be reworked for the stage and sent to Broadway by the same production team, but it never happened.

Quahvasinesh has a lovely voice.

by Anonymousreply 54December 11, 2022 1:09 AM

I've read that Whitney Houston actually auditioned for the show, if not the movie. She'd probably have died sooner if she'd become a child star.

by Anonymousreply 55December 11, 2022 1:12 AM

Skai Jackson probably can't sing but she has the doll like looks to play a girl.

by Anonymousreply 56December 11, 2022 1:13 AM

The Cowardly Lion will henceforth be known as The Lion Living With Trauma.

by Anonymousreply 57December 11, 2022 1:19 AM

Kenneth G. Harper, who produced 'The Wiz' on Broadway in 1975, died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 48 years old. The cause of death was cancer, said his mother, Mildred Harper.

'The Wiz,' a black musical version of L. Frank Baum's 1900 story 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,' won seven Tony awards in 1975, including the one for best musical. The show ran for more than 1,600 performances and was later turned into a film. In the late 1960's and early 70's, Mr. Harper worked as a disk jockey at radio station WPIX-FM.

He is survived by his parents, Mildred and Alfred Harper, of the Bronx. The funeral will be at 10 A.M. tomorrow at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, at 81st Street.

The Wiz is always on Broadway...well the alleys near the trash cans.

by Anonymousreply 61December 11, 2022 4:33 AM

A musical about piss?!

[quote]Kenneth G. Harper, who produced 'The Wiz' on Broadway in 1975, died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 48 years old. The cause of death was cancer, said his mother, Mildred Harper.

Really? He produced a show when he was 1 year old?

by Anonymousreply 64December 11, 2022 5:18 PM

I don't get the hate for The Wiz.

It was a fun, frothy little adventure.

I mean, ffs, Lea Michele is on B'way in a revivial of Funny Girl. NOTHING could be more odious than that.

by Anonymousreply 65December 11, 2022 5:23 PM

I saw the Wiz as a kid and loved it! My first Bway show and I was hooked.

Sadly the versions I’ve seen as an adult don’t capture any of the joy the characters did during that first production.

by Anonymousreply 66December 11, 2022 6:02 PM

New music, huh... Will they add more Luther Vandross songs? Dance With My Father?

by Anonymousreply 67December 11, 2022 6:07 PM

Why are they constantly messing with the Wiz??

Fix the book so everything doesn’t happen so fast and characters and audience have time to breathe and all will be better

by Anonymousreply 68December 11, 2022 6:08 PM

Will and Jada will buy it out.

by Anonymousreply 69December 11, 2022 6:18 PM

Billy Porter IS Golgotha

by Anonymousreply 70December 11, 2022 7:00 PM

I don't know why the film version of The Wiz was so panned by critics. Granted, I haven't seen it in eons but I remember it as being very good.

Yes, Diana Ross was too old for Dorothy but she still gave a great performance.

by Anonymousreply 71December 11, 2022 7:22 PM

[quote]Granted, I haven't seen it in eons but I remember it as being very good.

I do not.

by Anonymousreply 72December 11, 2022 7:25 PM

The movie is just awful

Will the new production get a product tie-in?

It’s interesting how the marketing of The Wiz got better.

Original commercial (doesn’t really show off the show).

The later commercial (copied the idea from the Grease commercial) at least showed how great the costumes were.

R76, thanks! I'd never seen that commercial before.

Who's the white guy in the audience 5 seconds in? I might recognize him from some soap opera.

by Anonymousreply 77December 12, 2022 8:38 PM

I hope if the revised version is too woke for critics, someone refers to it as cheese wiz.

by Anonymousreply 78December 13, 2022 11:23 AM

Will Gaten Mazzarato be in this? He’s In everything else these days

by Anonymousreply 79December 17, 2022 1:38 PM

Hell, they even make Toto black.

by Anonymousreply 80December 17, 2022 1:39 PM

Billy Porter IS Evilene AND the Twister!

by Anonymousreply 81December 19, 2022 7:13 AM
