I haven't seen it since it was on tv and never saw it in HD. I'd love to binge the series.
I wish Northern Exposure was streaming

Why don't you torrent it? It's on The Pirate Bay.

The female lead was annoying.

I was just thinking about how so many of the critically acclaimed shows of the past are never played on the nostalgia channels. Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, Moonlighting, etc. It's been years since I've had cable TV so maybe they show up there somewhere. But otherwise it's like they've disappeared.

You can watch all seasons of St. Elsewhere on Hulu, r3. I wish I could see Homicide: Life on the Street, I'll Fly Away, and A Year in the Life on a streamer somewhere.

I'm watching 'Northern Exposure' at this very moment in Spain.
Just in the last week or so it reappeared on air here after years of absence. Various streaming services promise the availiablity of the complete series beginning in February. There were even a couple news stories heralding the series' return, asking why the long wait for a series of some importance and quality.
Here it airs via a cluster of AMC-affiliated channels (AMC - International Networks Southern Europe) as a couple of episodes aired daily in sequence The channel is commonly included in basic level channel packages offered with internet/mobile/tv subscriptions. Streaming services will offer the full series from next month.
Maybe it will turn up elsewhere as well.

The music rights were too expensive to make it economical to stream
You can buy the DVD set on eBay

What other series have this issue with the music rights?......causing them to not be shown on streming services...thx

My beloved Cold Case wasn’t even released on DVD.

R7: China Beach, which had so much cool '60s music. The only way to see it is to buy (or rent?) the DVDs.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 31, 2023 1:38 AM |
I bought the entire series on AppleTV. It was on sale for 29.99. I'm only six episodes in, but I'm enjoying it. Rob Morrow was a cutie.

Is Picket Fences on any streaming sites? I would like to check that out.

Wonder Years, r7. I don't know if it ever got released with other music.

I never saw the whole series Sisters but it isn't streaming.

[quote]What other series have this issue with the music rights?
FWIW, "WKRP in Cincinnati " and "The Wonder Years" managed to resolve the issue, so it can be done.

I wonder if music rights was an issue with “Fame”? It wouldn’t surprise me as it’s hardly ever shown on TV anymore. I think the last time I saw it was on Ovation and that was probably 10 or more years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 6, 2023 5:46 PM |
WKRP in Cincinnati also had major music rights issues, but Shout Factory has released it on DVD mostly intact (though songs by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin had to be cut). Don't expect to see it pop up on streaming, though.

Season One is now streaming on Prime.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 20, 2024 4:25 PM |
All the seasons are streaming on Prime. I’ve watched the first 2 and part of S3, and I have to say, it definitely gets weirder and kind of loses the point with S3. And OP’s post has made me realize I lost interest and started watching something else a week ago after being SO excited to finally have it available. Which is kind of a bummer. I remember loving the show when it was on, but now I don’t have the patience, energy, or attention span. Even though Rob Morrow and John Corbett were fucking sexy as hell.

It was on Hulu last year.

I first saw the series between it's original run and the period when Lifetime aired reruns in the late 90s. I bought the DVD sets in 2016 when they were released. I had the feeling back then and still do that it's never going to be on a streaming service. At the time I bought them, I had to go out of state for a few months for a work assignment and I was also closing on a house. A lot of stuff was put in storage and when I moved into my house, I put a lot of stuff like DVDs and Blu Rays in the basement.
When covid hit in 2020, my job moved to remote status and I was home more due to theaters, concert venues and other things being closed. I started to go through my DVD collections and then I finally watched the Sisters DVDs. I enjoyed the rewatch. It was fun to look back some of the bad 90s fashion. But, it was sort of sad because there were great performances on that show that people have pretty much forgotten about these days.

The series was released on DVD with most of the original music on it. This article lists music that weren't on the DVDs.

Knots Landing is the only prime time soap from the 80s not available because of the Lisa Hartman series when she sang popular covers. Open Arms by Journey ain’t cheap to license. It’s too bad it’s in the graveyard because the series was so much more than a few scenes with Ciji singing in a nightclub.

Amazon has the first season.

Yeah, I think the reruns on Oivation were the last time I saw it as well

I had purchased the Northern Exposure seasons on DVD as they became available. The first seasons came inside these cute puffer jacket style covers. I think I watch the entire series every 3-4 years. If I knew they were going to be coming out with a box set on blu ray I may have waited.

I need to add it to my watchlist as I’ve always wanted to see it. My parents loved it in the 80s and 90s.

It's strange that Cold Case could never be released on DVD due to the music rights and royalties costs, but is available on HBO Max for streaming.
I'd love to understand the differences in economics or the loophole being used to make it feasible to stream.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 20, 2024 8:05 PM |
Oh, grand! It’s been remastered in high definition from the original 35 mm negatives on Amazon. It looks amazing.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 21, 2024 8:42 PM |
It’s now on Prime, remastered with original music intact. I started it last night and it’s just as delightful as I’d remembered.

I have wondered about this since it was put on Max. I have thought that maybe since Max is one of the more expensive streaming services it's sort of feasible for them to stream the show. But, I'm probably wrong.
There was a period of a few years when Cold Case disappeared from syndication and cable reruns. I was happy when it showed up on HBO Max a few years ago. TNT is also showing some reruns during late nights on Mondays and Tuesdays.
