Is it worth watching at this late date? Or was it all about Stone flashing her cunt? And can you really see her cunt?

Dorothy Malone was in it? Was she 100 years old?

No, you can’t see her cunt, but the look on Michael Douglas’s face made the viewer think he did, and the way Sharon Stone lit up and crossed her short skirted legs made one think they snuck a peek of snatch…

I love this movie. It's a classic. A film made for adults. A brilliant score by the late, great Jerry Goldsmith (deservedly nominated). Sharon is absolutely exciting to watch. Great cinematography. They really don't make them like this anymore.

R5 No, you totally see her snatch.

This movie is a vibe. Hollywood really didn’t know what to do with Sharon Stone after this and neither did Sharon Stone. She probably should have moved to nyc and done theater to expand.

R10, is it also a mood? Does the soundtrack have any bops?

Snatch aside, I loved how Stone was styled in this movie.

When I was 20 my first boyfriend was a sociopath. Red flags- weird vibe in their house, disregard for object. At first they put on a show of being perfect for you and then later start trying to break you down. fights that leave you confused. Try to get you to pull away from friends and family, attacks you and everything you sand for, ruins you life etc. lol.
I wish there were better ways to warn people of this shit.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.
And fabulous.
Stone coasted off that film for 3 decades.

They styled Stone in very classical clothes which made it feel timeless. It's still an incredibly entertaining and sleazy movie. Hollywood doesn't know how to do good sleaze anymore. Everyone's always so careful and tasteful which is no fun.
Unlike most erotic thrillers, it was actually somewhat sexy and Stone and Douglas had great chemistry. That role fit Stone like a glove and it's easily the best thing she's ever done although she was wonderful in Casino and The Muse playing two very different types of characters. I wonder if she just needs a strong director. In a lot of her other performances, she's so wooden and comes across like she's reading from cue cards.

[r20] I've read that psychologist say that empty is what makes us care about objects (your favorite cup...clothing etc), because we humanize the objects. Paths have no empathy so they see objects as they see humans- only as tools. That's why they treat all their stuff like shit. They'll store a valuable painting on the floor, for example. Perhaps throw out all their cloths if they change styles.
But that is pretty weird and subtle. What's easier to notice is that their space or home just lacks warmth. Usually impressive or fancy but something is missing. cold...but not as a choice. They also dress very well/too well- very meticulously. It can be even very simple but it's always precise. After I read this book I understood what my predator ex was and came across 2 others in my work life, the book seems to be spot on. Shitty people don't recommend. Their power is that lacking empty makes them good lairs and manipulators, and they lie and manipulate to seem normal.

I wish they'd cast someone sexier than Michael, although he was great in the role. Just couldn't get horby over his flat ass.

In my unrated director's cut edition blu-ray, the sex scene between Douglas and Stone was lengthened, which made it boring. The scene dragged on, and on. I never got bored watching the regular edition dvd.

I was surprised anyone mistook the brunette for Sharon during the opening shots, they had completely different tits!

This is the issue with most erotic thrillers. No matter how hot the people are, watching two people have sex for more than 30 seconds is incredibly boring and monotonous. It rarely does much to advance the plot. It's very tricky to create a sex scene that's appropriately erotic and drives the plot forward at the same time.

At the time when this came out, it seemed SO risque and daring. Anything and everything sex-wise is readily available now on the interwebs and we're all totally cynical and jaded. Basic Instinct seems really tame now.
I long for those simpler times when this seemed racy.

I did like the mentorship between geriatric serial killer Dorothy Malone and young serial killer Sharon Stone. It's nice to see the older generation training the youngens.

R20, is English your first language? Because FYI "empty" and "empathy" are not the same word, and the contexts indicates you wanted to use "empathy" (the ability to understand and share the feelings of another).
Anyway, I dispute your theory that a disregard for objects is an indicator of sociopathy, IMHO it's far more likely to indicate depression, or helplessness, a lack of materialist tendencies (usually a plus in my book), or just a dislike of housework. A disdain for animals or humans is a much bigger red flag in my book, as is anyone who is *overly* concerned with objects. Anyone eager to show off their expensive doo-dads on social media or to visitors is someone to be kept at arm's length.

[r35] Yes, English it's not my first writing language and I'm a bit dyslectic. I do know the difference between empty and empathy but I make mistakes when I type...
As for the path tells...I didn't mean anyone who is like that is a psychopath. But if someone seem happy and healthy and disregards objects it might get you thinking. I don't know. I don't really think it's a good way to spot a psychopath, more of and interesting detail. I don't know why I mentioned.

R36, I really don't think that disregard for objects is a good "psychopath tell" (and BTW you should spell out "psychopath"), because not every sane and decent person "humanizes" the objects around them.
I don't, but then if I want to anthropomorphize or humanize something, well, i have pets for that! To me, objects are just objects, regarded as either utilitarian or enjoyable, occasionally something to be proud of, but mostly they're just there to be used, and to be discarded or replaced without regret in time.

Jeanne was a dog with a freaky white girl face. Yuck. She was barely good enough for white monkey to rape.

It is great entertainment. It is thrilling and trashy at the same time, only Dressed to Kill and Body Double rival it. Jerry Goldsmith's score is haunting and I found the sex scenes extremely hot. I know a lot of posters here don't think Michael Douglas attractive but I think he was extremely hot in Basic Instinct.

Sharon Stone's tiny mounds she calls titties were distracting. How can she be considered "hot" with non-existent cleavage? And Roxy had a horse mouth that was disgusting. Most of the girls in this film were not "hot" at all.

I SO SO want that house of hers in the movie! I would never leave If I lived there! That deck overlooking the ocean is everything!...
Michael Douglas... Sorry I just laugh at him when I see him nude and dancing... They couldn't get anyone else in all of Hollywood? Granted, he did a great job at just being the detective and he had clout that probably helped the movie getting made in the first place. But sexually a big no....
I read that kurt russell was the first choice in the horrible basic instinct 2 and turned it down. I think Kurt would have been good in the first one, and gosh knows he is handsomer and better built than Douglas. I don't know if Russell has (or ever has?) done a soft porn sex scene in any of his movies though?...

Poor Jeanne Tripplehorn was nominated for a Razzie for this.
She probably thought “aah my ticket to stardom”
And then she was trashed in reviews.

Jeanne's acting is horrible in the movie. She never knew where to look and was awkward in every scene, inc the rape scene in her apt with the dancing girls in the next building. LOL. There's a reason her career went nowhere. She's horrible. I was more interested in the girls dancing than seeing her bad acting whilst getting boned by 80 year old monkey man.

I watched it again recently because of that podcast mentioned by r48.
I was in high school when I saw it in the theater while binging on Skittles, thinking the Sharon Stone character was the sexiest, most sophisticated thing in the world and being genuinely surprised at the twists and turns of the plot.
Now, I just found her character arrogant and annoying, and the movie plot silly and tedious.
One thing that jumps out at me in 2023 is this notion that anybody who "majored in psychology" would be a master at "messing with your head" so beware!
