Jeanne Tripplehorn
Let's discuss the actress Jeanne Tripplehorn
She is one of my favorites. Basic Instinct, The Firm, Waterworld, Reality Bites, Big Love, Grey Gardens, Mrs. America, Little Pink House, Gloria Bell, The Gilded Age, and The Terminal List.
She is not in a lot of movies or television, but she has aged like fine wine and can always be counted upon.

She managed to make kissing Salma Hayek look unsexy in "Timecode," but is otherwise quite dependable. One of the best showcases of her charms was the episode of "Big Love" when Bill and Barb had a quasi-affair, hooking up outside of their designated nights.

I loved her in Big Love. If you've never seen Big Love, you should. Also with Chloe Sevigny and Bill Paxton.

Jeanne Tripplehorn gave the best (if brief) portrayal of Jackie Kennedy I've ever seen in Grey Gardens.
Spot on.
Also, she was one of the only high points in Waterworld.

She was in over her head insofar as acting in her first film / Basic Instinct, but it worked for her character. She has improved considerably over the years. She needed to have more to do in borefest The Gilded Age.

I still get her confused with Marcia Gay Harden.

You must be psychic OP because The Firm was playing the other night on TV and I thought "I wonder if there is a Jeanne Tripplehorn thread on DL" and voila.
Big fan. I thought she was great on Criminal MInds but she was only on for two seasons. She outacted everybody and brought a sense of class and intelligence while the rest of the cast looked like they were going through the motions.

I suspect we will see more of her playing women of a certain age. She's talented and hasn't ruined her face through surgery. Always liked her work.

She was the MVP of Big Love. Her sex scene in basic instinct looked way too rapey

Quite a dignified lady to be married to Leland Orser, such a loony character actor.

R5 & R12 beat me to it. I loved her Jackie O in Grey Gardens. That was a great scene.
Jeanne was also good as Julia Stiles' madam in the web series "Blue".

I wonder if Jeanne Tripplehorn ever checked into a Doubleday but only a single bed was available.

She is the perfect example of why an actress should not get plastic surgery. She has more character in her face, and she has great style.

She always came across as very classy, intelligent, and sincere. She always felt like the type of lady who would enjoy a wine and opera night as well as a beer and pizza night.

I like her and always thought her awkward last name held her back.
She likes goofy men. Is married to Leland Orser and was once engaged to Ben Stiller. (Random fact: Orser's previous wife was Roma "Touched by An Angel" Downey)

So it comes as a total shock when she out of nowhere hits you in the head with a fondue pot. It's still on, Jeannie...

She was great in "Big Love." She really sold that character: wanting to build this extended family, but you could also see the pain the she felt that her husband took on other wives. I remember bawling my eyes out at the episode where she's confronted about being in a polygamous relationship at the Mother of Year (or whatever it was) awards & she has to leave. The mixture of pain, shame while trying remain dignified was really moving.

She was my favorite on Big Love after Chloe Sevigny—her acting on that show was understated but smart, playing the more matronly wife. They gave her some decent character arcs, though Sevigny got the real batshit subplots on that show. I have always found Ginnifer Goodwin supremely annoying. Jeanne and Chloe seem to still be close—Jeanne was at her wedding last year.

She didn’t make enough movies to really register with me beyond Basic Instinct, but I did come to admire her on Big Love. She gave a subtle and very well rounded performance as Barb.

Yes, though it fit the character on that show. Her ditsy pep brought in some contrast.

There’s a really funny commentary track to Big Love with the three women. At the beginning Chloë Sevigny says, “I’m Chloë Sevigny and I play Nicolette Sheridan… Nicolette SHERIDAN?? No. Hi. I’m Chloë Sevigny, and I play Nicolette GRANT!”
Then they all laugh hysterically.

R34, well put. I have big love for Big Love. Chloe Sevigny was always compulsively watchable because Nicky was such an extreme character, but Jeanne Tripplehorn's Barb was the most sympathetic and the only one of the major characters you'd really want as a friend. Like you, I found it painful to watch some of the scenes where this genuinely nice woman was suffering for having been dragged into a life you know she didn't really want.
Re Leland Orser. He's goofy but cute. He was also in Faults, a great but little-seen movie about a cult deprogrammer and the complex relationship that develops with a woman he's been hired to deprogram.
Both of these things - Big Love and Faults are going on my re-watchlist.

R42 Chloë is actually pretty damn funny. Her character on "Big Love" was really well-written—deadpan but feisty, and sensitive underneath. She brought countless moments on that show that were laugh-out-loud comical to me. There is a moment in one of the seasons (I can't remember which—it's been a long time since I've watched the show) where she goes against her standard conservative dress choices and decides to make herself look "slutty" (I think for shock value? I can't remember the circumstances), and it was fucking hilarious—not only because she looked ridiculous, but her cluelessness was played so perfectly. I wish she would do more comedy to be honest, but she tends to gravitate toward weirder, darker material.

I met her a few years ago, on Christmas Eve at a little hotel in Salzburg. We were checking in and she was waiting by herself in the lobby. We were making small talk waiting for the front desk clerk, so I complimented her work on “Big Love.” She was surprised to be recognized in Austria of all places, but was extremely gracious - warm, engaging and kind. Bumped into her the following evening in the restaurant and she came over and said hello, wished us a Merry Christmas, etc. I loved her work before meeting her, but I love her even more now. She’s a class act.

I really enjoyed Big Love, and would re-watch. I like Jeanne Tripplehorn, thought she played a vindictive side piece to the hilt in Sliding Doors as well. I always thought she was really beautiful and it's nice to see she has naturally aged and is still beautiful.
I was dating an ex-communicated Mormon (whose family we often visited) at the time, and some of the material was pretty relevant.

^ She brought a subtle sadness to that role - as Phyllis Schlafley’s “old maid” sister-in-law. In a show full of big performances, her smaller one stuck with me the most.

Even though Big Love went off the rails, I liked the writers didn't end the show with Barb as the continual doormat to Bill's schemes, particularly after she got excommunicated. Having her find her own voice & become the real head of the family (that she actually always was) was a good way to end things.

In the early ’90s, Jeanne Tripplehorn was cast as Michael Douglas’s lover in Basic Instinct, but her big break almost never happened. Originally a theater actress from Tulsa, she replaced another actress at the eleventh hour and held her own opposite Hollywood titans. This move catapulted her into stardom, but Tripplehorn wasn’t about chasing the spotlight—she was famously selective about roles, turning down blockbuster offers to stay true to her craft.
Legend has it, during the filming of The Firm with Tom Cruise, her quiet determination impressed the notoriously intense actor. She rewrote several of her scenes herself, crafting dialogue that sharpened her character’s arc. Cruise reportedly said, “She doesn’t just act; she builds worlds.”
To this day, Tripplehorn is celebrated for her nuanced performances and almost mythical status as the actress who could have been everywhere but chose to chart her own path instead.
